Victor of Marseilles (ancient Massalia - died c. 290) was an Egyptian Christian martyr. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church as are his companions.

Victor was a Roman army officer in Marseille, who publicly denounced the worship of idols and his exhortations to Christians to be firm in their faith in the face of an impending visit by the Emperor Maximian. He was then racked, beaten, dragged through the streets, and thrown into prison, where he converted three other Roman soldiers, Longinus, Alexander, and Felician, who were subsequently beheaded. After refusing to offer incense to a statue of the Roman god Jupiter, Victor kicked it over with his foot. The emperor ordered that he be put to death by being ground under a millstone, but the millstone broke while Victor was still alive. He was then beheaded.

Victor and the three other Roman soldiers he converted – Longinus, Alexander and Felician – were killed near the end of the 3rd century, c. 290 AD. In the 4th century, John Cassian built a monastery over the site where their bodies had been buried in a cave, which later became a Benedictine abbey and minor basilica. This is the Abbey of St Victor (Abbaye Saint-Victor).

This is a group exhibition containing 19 individual artists. The degree of integrity manifested through the exhibition strikes in the first glimpse. The works on display, featuring paintings and sculptures they communicate with the site of the crypt, executing the spiritual, ritual energy. Discussing the theme of life and death in some religious spheres.

The exhibition embedded something that differs from post-minimalism, there are still codes or semiotic that can be interpreted from the works. I was intensely drawn to the ritual aesthetic of the exhibition, the works and environment meshed as one natural existence. The experience of viewing the works online, through images generates impulses that irritate me to create art as great as this.

Laissez-vous conter l’église Saint-Amans et son quartier

Du monastère Saint-Amans à la place des Toiles

 L’église Saint-Amans de Rodez faisait partie, jusqu’à la Révolution, d’un monastère. Les bâtiments qui abritaient la communauté de religieux se dressaient au sud de l’édifice et ont aujourd’hui presque entièrement disparus. Le lieu de culte s’est développé à l’emplacement d’une nécropole antique, à l’extérieur des remparts de la ville romaine, autour de la sépulture de saint Amans, le premier évêque de Rodez. Dès lors, des religieux sont chargés de la gestion des reliques et des inhumations, comme de la tenue d’offices religieux.

Si un cimetière se développe rapidement, car l’attrait d’être inhumé au plus proche d’un lieu saint est très grand, c’est également un bourg qui grandit autour de l’église. Cet épanouissement sera encore accentué par l’arrivée des Comtes de Rodez dans cette partie de la ville au début du XIe siècle. Ils choisissent tout d’abord une résidence au sud, au bas de l’actuelle rue de Laumière, avant de s’établir au nord de l’église, place de l’Olmet, dans le troisième quart du XIIIe siècle.

Peu de temps après leur venue, ils font don de l’établissement religieux, signalé comme abbaye et basilique royale au début du VIIe siècle, à la puissante abbaye Saint-Victor de Marseille. Saint-Amans en devient un prieuré adoptant la règle des bénédictins.

La vie en communauté des religieux demande des bâtiments spécifiques, appelés bâtiments conventuels, nécessaires à la vie et aux activités quotidiennes : dortoir, réfectoire, salle capitulaire pour se rassembler et parler de la règle et de la vie en communauté, espaces utilitaires (cuisine, écurie, jardin…), le tout desservi par un cloître dans lequel se faisaient également étude et inhumations. Un dessin représentant le Bourg de Rodez en 1495 nous donne une première image sommaire de ces bâtiments conventuels : deux galeries de cloître délimitant une cour où sont représentés des sarcophages, entourées par des bâtiments et un espace non bâti accolé qui pourrait correspondre à un jardin. La disposition est confirmée par un plan de 1764 dressé au moment de la reconstruction de l’église et qui donne la fonction des espaces du rez-de-chaussée.

Les bâtiments sont vendus en 1794 comme Biens Nationaux, partagés en plusieurs lots, à des particuliers, après la dissolution de la communauté. Ils sont remaniés, ou reconstruits, et deviennent des habitations. Une partie, correspondant au cloître et aux bâtiments longeant la cour, est transformée en hôtel dans le courant du XXe siècle – la cour avait déjà été comblée auparavant par la construction d’un immeuble supplémentaire.

Place des Toiles aujourd’hui

L’hôtel, appelé « de Lodève », est détruit en 1988 et les terrains sont acquis par la commune de Rodez pour agrandir la place des Toiles. Il est possible que ces constructions aient conservées des vestiges des bâtiments conventuels. Il ne reste de visibles que trois grands arcs brisés en grès rose, dont un incluant un bénitier, au sud de la place, ainsi que le souvenir, dans le parcellaire actuel, de l’emplacement des différents espaces du monastère et du jardin qui l’accompagnait, le long de l’actuel passage du Prieuré.
