GANDHI’S MOVIE REVIEWS By Gandhi, Miami Herald
Waaaaazzzup! G-Shock here with my sweet movie review column! I know a lot of you were blown away with my other articles I wrote this year -- all ya’lls emails you sent were hilarious saying how I was crazy and out of touch! You’re right! I’m mad off da hook! This time around, I decided to review films from the Clone High film fest. So here we go, yo! Let’s get this party started right and/or quickly!
The Truth Wears Sideburns, written and directed by Joan of Arc. Starring Genghis Khan as “Gabe Linkoln” and Joan of Arc as “Joan.” Okay, this movie blew. I don’t know what Joan was thinking, but there was no action, no explosions, no car chases, no female nudity, and very, very few special effects. At one point, there was a piece of pie, and I thought, okay, finally, here come some hilarious pie-related sex jokes like in that Jason Biggs movie, but no, instead it decomposes and gets eaten by maggots. And what was with the black and white? Like she couldn’t afford color or something? Laaaaame. It Takes a Hero, written and directed by Abe Lincoln. Starring Caesar’s sister Betsy as “Pregnant Girl” and introducing Harold the emu as “The Giraffe.” I have mixed feelings about this one. It had a really original plot involving an animal playing a team sport, and a totally unpredictable ending where the giraffe actually kicks the field goal to win the football game... but there was just something missing. It just lacked a certain magic. Maybe they could have fixed that with a straight-talking coach who realizes the error of his surly ways and gives a rousing speech right before they win the game. That would have been great. Nice try, though. Check Out the Cans on That Wooden Broad, written and directed by JFK. Starring Kristy Swanson as a mannequin that comes to life and Meshach Taylor as “Hollywood.” I don’t know why, but for some reason this just seemed really similar to this Eighties movie I saw once. I think it was called Howard the Duck. The Best of the Best of the Best, written and starring Cleopatra as “Cleopatra.” Directed by Ang Lee. This seemed like it would have been a really cool movie, because it cost a lot of money to make, but unfortunately, the only copy of the film was destroyed in the fire. That’s really weird, because the exact same thing happened to the Cleopatra movie made in the Sixties with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Too bad the world never got to see that. Black and Tan, written by Gandhi, directed by Gandhi, starring Gandhi, produced by Gandhi, art direction by Gandhi. Also starring George Washington Carver. This was easily the best film in the festival! Not just because it had everything you can ask for in a film, including the East Indian Vin Diesel, but also because it’s the only film in the festival with a real message. It says a lot about race relations today. It brings to light the fact that when two minority characters fight crime together, it’s twice as amusing than when there’s just one white guy and one minority. That’s called math, people. Get used to it. And you know what else is all about math? The sequel, which will have twice the action, twice the comedy, and will gross twice as much money because -- check this out -- it will feature twice the Gandhis: me and MiniG, who’s actually the same size as me and played by Vin Diesel. Hooray for Bollywood!

To end this chapter, I would like to focus a work by Abe Linkoln (Rick Silva) and Jimpunk (name unknown) who’s work is similar to mine (figure 7). Both artists had created a blog in 2004-2005 using the platform Blogger entitled ‘Screenfull’ (founded In 1999-current in comparison to Tumblr which was founded in 2007-current). This work depicts a crowded site that takes a “…maximalist approach to content and design…” as they described this work as “…stadium rock net.art.”. The artists posted regularly showcasing their multidisciplinary skills through short videos, GIFs, images and audio clips. They portray their work as an “…ongoing multimedia conversation.” through which they have sampled and remixed content. I enjoy the fact that they label it as an ‘ongoing’ conversation and therefore will review my work to ensure I continue this form of communication between the content online and the relationship the user can make from this. In order to better understand this idea of ‘conversation’ it is important to compare Arvida  Byström’s “Wifi for wife” (2014) (seen in figure 8) to ‘Screenfull’ (2004-5). Byström is a Despite the gap in time, both depict bodies of information relevant to the artists upbringing on the ‘net’. Byström’s content is ‘cute’ eroticism with a hint of perversion, not too dissimilar to my work. In comparison to ‘Screenfull’ who’s aesthetic isn’t as crisp, perverted and melancholic as mine or Byström’s. If according to Linkoln and Jimpunk, being an internet artist is contributing to an “....ongoing multimedia conversation.” this bids me to question what is the conversation? more importantly, what does my work contribute to the relevant conversation? is it anything worth discussing? or does my work cease to be relevant due to the hollowness of my conversation?. These questions will become clearer as the project progresses.

“In 2004, artists Abe Linkoln (Rick Silva) and Jimpunk (whose real name is a closely guarded secret) began a new blog, hosted on the Blogger platform. Called Screenfull, the project was loud and crowded, taking a maximalist approach to content and design; the artists described it as “stadium rock net.art.”” he uses the blog as his medium and gallery.
“short looping videos, animated GIFs, images, and audio clips, sampled and remixed from around the web in an ongoing multimedia conversation“
This is similar to the style which is crazy and confusing, and similar in terms of how the art works and where its placed. This also reminds me of computer 8-Bit games a cool theme to look into

Net Art Report
Screenfull was a project created by Abe Linkoln and Jimpunk in 2004 that took a maxamalist approach to content and design. The artists described it as “stadium rock net.art” for its loud colors and crowded content. Blogging was becoming increasingly popular, as was the same high frequency of personal posting that still exists in 2017. The artists constantly churned out manipulated content that included everything from audio, looping videos, GIFS and images found on the internet; however, they broke the traditional layout and structure of blogs by frequently changing the layout of their page. The setup of the site would change with the content, so the blog worked as an ever evolving digital collage. The site adapted to always push the different technical constraints of the current time. They explored the possibilities of net art as online expression evolved from personalized pages to hosted services. The sensory overload was heightened by unsettling music, skulls and the message “We crash your browser with out content”. In 2004 much less data existed on the web than does now, so people were not used to experiencing so much stimulation from their screens. Sites like Facebook had just been created and devices such as smartphones were not nearly as popular. Wikipedia and other similar online encyclopedias were not yet created, so people were not as aware of just how much information existed in cyberspace. Screenfull foreshadowed the overwhelming amount of data that fills our screens today, as well as the immense roll the internet plays in our day to day lives.

To further understand the functionality of my artwork it is necessary to examine  the interface as well as the source. In this sense, the “source” I refer to is the internet itself. According to google the internet also referred to as ‘the net’ can be defined as:
Exert 2:
“a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.”
The above exert defines the functionality of the ‘net’ and therefore provides a clearer framework for how ‘net art’ not only functions but also the architecture it follows. There are many relevant artists who have paved the way in terms of ‘internet art’. To further examine how “...interconnected networks...” communicate online in order to produce art I refer to the simple net art diagram (SNAD).  This is depicted in figure 4, I would like to focus on the phrase “the art happens here” (1997) The “art” that occurs is between the communication of two (or more) computer systems (1997). This was created by artist duo MTAA (1997). This diagram is fundamental as it proclaims that internet art ‘happens’ therefore it is conceived as an action/performance as well as being referred to by its ‘in-betweenness’ (1997). Many other artists have decided to create modern renditions to show the growth and complexity between networks. The artist Abe Linkoln (Rick Silva) in 2003 re-imagined the work as the ‘Complex Net Art Diagram’ (figure 5). As an exercise I decided to create my own version of the content that has nurtured not only my artistic practice but also who I am as a person (no image in this is my own). This is seen within figure 6, it is evident from my own (SNAD) model what influences have created the aesthetic and content I now create. What I find most compelling about the SNAD model is that the ‘here’ attains multiple meanings. I interpret the 'here’ as no clear distinction between the ‘author’ and ‘audience’ further exemplifying ‘coders’ as an unidentifiable presence. My work and practise is a platter of the time I have existed online - showcasing social, cultural and historical references. This is overtly obvious in the site ‘enter me’ which conveys a feedback loop of collected gifs that adhere to various Tumblr aesthetics. It proposes the question, “what is the meaning of choice?” suggesting the user to meditate and digest what little information I give them.  A more subtle reference is the site importantanouncement.tumblr.com that plays pop anthems over the top of a video discussing the use of crystal balls. The collection of songs was not at random, In fact these songs are pulled from a playlist used as a torture method in the middle east (Barnes 2014). The playlist is sacred to the early 2000’s and yet used for alternative motives, this made me examine all the content the web shares - is any part of the internet innocent?
