The Good Stuff
Listen. He’s a good boy really, he just says a lot of horrific shit. He just can’t help himself.
Was born with a heart defect that would later require a pacemaker to be placed. This was discovered during a lacrosse game where he was tackled too hard and his heart just… stopped. This incident is also what sparked his curiosity and acceptance of death. He was often asked what he saw when he “died”, what it was like. He knew people were looking for hope, for comfort, even at a young age, so he would tell them what they wanted to hear, but truth? There was nothing. There was no light, no deity waiting, just… nothing.
As he grew older and came to learn and understand the body he realized it’s because he didn't actually die and he was just, for lack of a better word, unconscious, but it still stuck with him.
After this incident, Kacey and his parents went to opposite sides; they became more cautious of him and he became more reckless. They wouldn’t let him participate in contact sports anymore, a strict medication regimen until the physicians said he was fine, it was too much. His mother pushed choir at their church so he had something to do and could hang out with his friends. They tried to get him into sports like track or soccer but they just didn’t give him the rush he wanted. He found snowboarding after a friend invited him on a trip with his family. It was hard at first, but after the first successful run where he was flying down the mountain? He was hooked.
There was nothing quite like the high of hitting a jump, picking up speed and carving around a corner, except maybe the high he got from ecstasy, or stimulants, or starting a fight because someone else was being an asshole or starting a fight because he just felt like he’d been to tame lately. A period of time went by where his parents were sure what the fuck to do with him. His freshman year of college was a blur of too many drugs, too much drinking and a mix of bodies in and out of his bed. To say he went off the rails was an understatement.
It wasn’t until one too many rushes later he found himself in the hospital. His heart unable to keep up, his pacemaker unable to stabilize it, Kacey was in serious danger. Five adjustments, a week stay, and required bed rest later, he returned to his life with orders to take it easy. It took a lot of cardio PT, medications, and sobriety to get him close to where he was. But life is so boring sober. It’s so boring without a thrill. It’s how he found a different hobby— storytelling.
Cleared to snowboard but nothing crazy, cleared to drink occasionally his nights were no longer filled with sticky wooden floors, beer stains, and thin white lines, but files. Papers on papers, tabs filled with articles of gruesome details, some of which he only had access too because of an internship he was in at the time. Kacey started My Corpses And Me podcast. An era of true crime it was a hit and he was able to stay anonymous while still getting the thrill of mystery hunting. The podcast still has steady traction and he incorporates more educational content as well, diving into disease process, how the body works when dying, and working to de-mystify death in general.
He graduated with honors by some miracle, an ending neither him nor his parents would’ve seen coming. Kacey was accepted early into a masters program where he started his residency in San Francisco, then transitioned to San Diego, moving to Aurora Bay after a PRN offer was received. He now works between SD PD, AB Hospital, and will travel to San Francisco to assist on stranger cases that need a second set of keen eyes and an outside the box thinker.
The party side still exists, Kacey often wanting to push his body to the limits, the itch never fully being scratched but he tries to satisfy it with his sports. You can usually find him surfing, dancing, or making the trek from the South to the North for some good powder.
