Wednesday 15th February 2023 - Abu Dhabi Airport!

Check-in at Sydney Airport was a breeze and we were the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd passengers in the Business Lounge when it opened!

Mind you, the Business lounge they directed us to was quite small and not the best we’ve used but it had all the essentials and was very convenient for our gate.

In fact, our plane, a Boeing-777 of Etihad Airways, arrived outside the window at 7.20pm, giving it a tight turn-around time before our flight set for 9.30pm but nevertheless we departed more-or-less on time for our 14-hour flight to Abu Dhabi. Travelling Business-class on any long journey like this is expensive but quite an experience and the ‘Etihad experience’ was no exception.

The seating layout is yet again different from other airlines we’ve travelled with and while the brown and coffee colour-scheme is perhaps a little 1970s-ish, it’s spacious, comfortable, with lots of legroom and the in-flight service was impeccable.

The pink Champagne was a given, of course, before and after take-off, followed by dinner of Tomato & Basil Soup and Pan-roasted Barramundi (other options applied). I wasn’t keen on the pumpkin or the faro risotto and the stewardess was most concerned.

But the fish was delicious and I took solace in a warm Apple & Rhubarb Crumble for dessert! Also Earl Grey Tea of course, though served ‘American-style’! I tried watching a film but became far too sleepy and after getting the seat into the right position to suit my back, I must have slept comfortably, on and off, for a good 6 hours or more. The film catalogue wasn’t enormous but I found another one to watch, during which my concerned stewardess brought me some ice-cream. As the film was finishing, she also served my breakfast. She did forget my cheese omelette, although that might have been my fault; I was rather sleepy when she took my order. But after cereal, pastries and a very nice fruit & granola yoghurt, I didn’t need it really and she had been so nice; and being typically British, I didn’t want to ‘make a scene’.

Landing at Abu Dhabi at a local time of 4.30am (Wednesday) after 14 hours meant that our body-clocks were completely confused; it should have been 11.30, nearly lunchtime but it was still dark outside!

So I had another breakfast in the vast (and almost deserted) Etihad Business lounge. Etihad is the National Airline of the UAE and with Abu Dhabi being the airline’s main ‘hub’, its facilities are designed to impress.

The next leg of our journey homeward to London would continue with Etihad but would be shorter (about 7.5 hours) on one of their Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliners’……

Qatar Sports Investments : ManU et Liverpool ciblés pour un rachat

Selon une source proche du Qatar, QSI examine également la possibilité d'acquérir des clubs tels que Manchester United et Liverpool FC en totalité ou en partie. Cette décision est prise pour élargir leur portefeuille d'investissements sportifs et pour renforcer la stratégie du Qatar d'investir dans des ligues prestigieuses telles que la premier League. N'importe quel accord futur, que ce soit une acquisition totale ou une participation minoritaire, renforcerait davantage la vision du Qatar de consacrer ses ressources financières dans les actifs sportifs pour améliorer la reconnaissance du pays. Le Qatar a déjà fait des investissements sportifs importants, comme l'achat du PSG, une acquisition d'actifs au SC Braga au Portugal et la création du groupe beIN Média, axé sur les sports. Liverpool et Man U ouvert à une vente Tottenham a récemment inauguré un stade high-tech avec une capacité de 60 000 places. Il est estimé à environ 2.15 milliards de dollars selon Football Benchmark. Le club de Chelsea FC a quant à lui été vendu pour 2.69 milliards de dollars à un consortium américain l'année dernière. Les actions de Manchester United ont connu une croissance significative depuis juillet dernier, passant de 10.41 dollars à 23.11 dollars. Ce qui leur a conféré une capitalisation boursière d'environ 3.8 milliards de dollars. Il n'est pas connu si QSI a entamé des discussions avec d'autres clubs d'Angleterre. Toute offre potentielle est actuellement à ses premiers stades. CBS Sports a été le premier à rapporter la rencontre entre QSI et Tottenham.
