bilbo, the sneaky hobbit that he was- slipped a birthday gift into aragorn's bag and disappeared again before he could be discovered. "happy birthday, aragorn" written on a note big print above a small poem of well wishes. the note itself was attached to a box containing a few small cakes and a handful of new strings for his bow.

The wafting fragrance of honeys, of glazes with their sugars and loafs of soft breads… Now: he’d never packed such things, had he? Even those most terrible evils shuddered to approach him, but Bilbo, as it’d seemed, was on a league they’d never reach. What a brave soul, to sneak upon Strider like a mouse to a cat! Yet, beside himself, the worn Ranger nursed a smile.

He settled beside his pack. Plucking out the letter, he read the inked scrawl. And between these hand-crafted pastries and these poems penned with care, with this bowstring and this letter bleeding fondness and love! By the Valar, how could Strider not at all feel as though he’d been winded? Favored by chance?

“There is no end to their depths, truly, the hearts of hobbits.”

Indeed, he spoke well. And as he bit at a sweetbread, he thought Bilbo most of all.

although the hobbit himself was nowhere to be seen the handwriting scrawled across the top of the gift was clearly bilbo's. "happy birthday, my friend" neatly printed on top of ruby red wrapping. inside the box was a new pipe! made out of mixture of wood and metal and crafted by a dwarf. it wasn't much, but he had hoped aragorn would like it all the same.

             Ah, but the package was received with warmth! Long had it been since he had spoken to his dear friend, but he should not have been surprised of the Hobbit’s memory. ❝ Ah, my friend, ❞ he murmured to himself, low and musing, turning over the pipe in his fingers in great appreciation. ❝ You always outdo yourself. ❞

my dear friend, i'm going to be holding a little party to celebrate the winter season and i would love you for to join me. if a certain dunedan ranger also happens to be there then it is merely by coincidence i assure you. in fact, the ranger might be the only other guest attending this party..... far away from anyone's disapproving stare.... by that is also merely by coincidence and in no way exactly how i planned things.

casually sends a three tier birthday cake with pippin's name on it to his favorite nephew.

          It was surely one of the biggest birthday cakes he had ever seen in his whole life ----- at least when it came to birthdays, as often the cakes served with marriages could be bigger, but that was a whole different occasion. Of course, his smile was bright, and he would love to take a slice, or even a few! The writing was one he clearly noticed, not needing to guess who it could come from, and it took quite some of his willpower not to run towards his Uncle to thank him. Instead, he would wait until later, when the party would start.     “I’ve got to remind myself to thank Uncle Bilbo, when he gets here, for this is surely the best cake I have ever gotten!”

if the ranger's pack seems heavier than usual it's because a sneaky hobbit packed away some homemade and long-lasting treats, with each one containing a different poem written on their wrappings, for him while he wasn't looking

Kindness was rare to bestow him, and on paths ever winding in darkness and toil, Aragorn had long-learned never to hope. And so, his delight came rightly when he caught the scent of breads, biscuits and fine cheeses nestled safely in his pack. Relishing a respite, the Ranger paused amidst his travels, the moon up above sat heavy and full. A crackling fire soon sprung to life beside him. The flavors of Hobbiton lept richly on his tongue. Bilbo’s humble fares were things worthy of praise, and Aragorn, alone in the wilds, was content with these sandwiches. However, his appetite alone was not whetted so aptly as the poems attached came equally fine! 

Smiling, the Ranger gazed upon the words alight neath the embers. “A fine friend,” he hummed to the nightly breeze.

            ‘twas not often a Ranger could be caught off guard — even in the quiet and safe halls of the Last Homely House. He had been leafing through an old text Gandalf had, in all his wisdom, insisted he read, though he had gleaned little from it yet. Though, the sudden appearance of his old friend startled him out of his reading with a quick glance up and a muffled curse, but any surprise was quickly replaced with a faint and warm smile. 

                 ❝ Ai, Bilbo! You are as silent as ever. I heard tell of your journey here. ❞

yeah he warned thror but that was it, which was a shitty move but MOSTLY is bc he’s scared shitless of the dragon & he wanted nothing to do with that. that he doesn’t involve himself with others has to do with a lot that went wrong in history + he’s proud af & doesn’t wanna depend on others’ help. oropher was rly racist, thran still has to unlearn to kinda look down at mortals.

Okay so wait though I have some questions because I know he was warning Thror against the dragon but like, is that a thing? Does having too much gold attract dragons? Can they like... smell the gold? Or was it the arkenstone that brought the dragon? Tbh Smaug made the arkenstone sound like one of the rings in the way that it corrupts people and I’m starting to think it serves no purpose other than to make people desire it.
