Week 1-Concepts & Pitch

For my film this semester, I have two concept ideas that I would like to do as 2D films. One of which I had worked on since last semester in ACM 321 and one I developed last minute a week before the Pitch was due... (*ﾟ∀ﾟ*)

Concept 1:

My first concept, which is the one I worked on last semester, came about knowing I wanted to create a story personal to me. Also, because I like plants, I wanted my characters to be some kind of plant or of nature. I then decided on two characters being a flower and a ladybug. Then I used the “what if…” technique to come up with my concept and that is “what if a flower that was supposed to bloom didn’t want to open”

The story will follow a lone flower at the edge of a flower field, who when attacked by pests is saved by a ladybug. When the ladybug finds herself under attack by a bird, the flower gains the courage to bloom, thus overcoming her shyness to save the ladybug.

My hope for “Bloom” is to be a cute and heartwarming mutualism between a flower and a ladybug that deals with themes of loneliness, isolation, and is about overcoming one’s shyness by opening up to others.

Concept 2:

For my second concept, I also drew inspiration from personal experience. When I was a kid, my mom had a very long and beautiful silver Arowana fish. After that one died, we had a golden one that also died. Finally, we had a third and final Arowana fish that was also silver like our first one, which we unfortunately gave away because it was getting too big for our tank. My mom told me how our very first Arowana fish would try to jump out of the tank a lot, which she prevented by placing a heavy object on the lid. Upon further research, I learned they jump for two reasons: 1) food, and 2) because of stress when they outgrow their tank. Therefore, their instinct is to jump for freedom.

They are also known as Dragon fish due to their dragon shaped body and can come in a variety of colors. They are especially popular in Southeast Asia as they are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Therefore, this fish is highly adored by many hobby aquarists. 

My second concept, possibly titled “Dragon Fish” or “Fish Out of Water,” would follow a man immersed in his aquarium hobby. He finds himself becoming a hermit and isolated from the world until his pet Arowana fish becomes too big that it wants to break free from its tank. The fish adopts a new form, a dragon form, to be able to fly freely in the sky.

My hope for this second concept is to tell a story about breaking free from one’s comfort zone and putting one’s self out there and enjoying what life has to offer.
