How did VM not win the WC gold with umbrellas? I watched that comp with all their programs and they were so picture perfect. How did they not get the gold for that?

The French, Delobel and Schoenfelder were a seasoned, mature team who had been competing for a while. They did lose the free dance to Tessa and Scott which was a big fucking deal at the time, also Tessa and Scott had a twizzle error in the original dance which dropped their score, so they weren't picture perfect. It was only their second senior season, so they weren't getting intense judge support, and they didn't have the otherworldly finesse and control that they would grow to be known for. It makes total sense why they didn't win.
