Wow what to say about this month, June, other than that we had waited for it, for a long time.  Not just in the way you learn of a due date, and set it on a calendar, and start nesting to get everything just right; but also in the way that our love story had always been leading us to this point, and our lives were setting a purpose, a grand design, that had each of us rolling through our days (both long and short) that would some day have us as a mom and a dad.  The only difference now is that we know his name and his face - William.    It was on the 11th day of the month that he came, after being due on the first, and so the first third of June was spent waiting.  We enjoyed the bonus relaxing time as much as I enjoyed looking at Audrie’s beautiful pregnant belly, stretched to its max, perfectly round, and skin soft from baby butter and olive oil.   My Mom came to help post-partum and wound up right in the thick of it, hanging the blue flag out front for us.  The labor and birth story was memorable and its length provides several channels for exaggeration and embellishment but a birth center and two hospitals later we were bringing him home for the real story to begin.   Life both sped up, and slowed way down - simultaneously!  No wonder that at the end of the month we’re burnt to a crisp and his due date feels like a year ago while looking back at each day is so sweet and important.  We came a long way from hiking in the cactus trying to start labor to nightly diaper changes.    But of all it comes the most important part of this month - the spirit of June 2021, that yes, we can do this.  We can do it well.  We can do it together.  Its nothing that we can’t handle.

Lots of firsts in here - first bottle, first cardinals game, first fathers day, first blow out diaper, first doctors appointment and first surgery, first bath, first book, first time meeting grandparents, even first Banff Film Festival!   We’ll look back on this specific spin for years and years for what it was like when William was born.  For years I considered this photo-a-day project and imagined that someday it would capture the birth of an Acton.  Now it has, and the way it looks, altogether, is beautiful beyond any more words that I could add here.  In short, I am happy and fulfilled and inspired.  So much work to do from here.  But I pull motivation from a Barbara Kingsolver quote:  “But kids don’t stay with you if you do it right. Last year, these committed volunteers completed an amazing feat: 10.1 miles of new trail in less than four months. Their accomplishments and future plans are recognized through the Group Excellence Award.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Walt and Kathy Horsfall, Arizona

Walt and Kathy Horsfall have been recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their 13 years of service as site hosts to the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area in Arizona. Whether it was collecting data, helping visitors plan their trip or supporting youth conservation crews, Walt and Kathy’s have worked hard to share their appreciation for public lands.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Tracy Greenwood, California

Since June 2000, Tracy Greenwood has single-handedly managed and operated the Briceberg Visitor Center at Merced River Recreation Area in California. She prepares the education center, stocks and decorates for each season, takes inventory and more. Tracy’s dedication over the years has exemplified the BLM’s mission and is well-deserving of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Phil and Chriscinda Jamison, Eastern States

Phil and Chriscinda Jamison have supported  the Wild Horse and Burro Program in the BLM’s Eastern States for 15 years. The Jamisons assist with adoption events, conduct routine compliance inspections, respond to animal needs and more. In 2014, they also opened a trail riding business using only mustangs and have led over 350 trail rides annually. Their efforts have helped find homes for dozens of mustangs and have been awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
