Ghost Dancer - Addrisi Brothers
Who is this stranger
Who comes here every night
It’s such a spooky sight
He always dances alone
When he dances
People move aside
They stand there hypnotized
He’s got a haunting dance of soul
I’ve heard it said
Once upon a time
He had a lover
And they showed that love
By dancing with each other

Blue Swede “Hooked on a Feeling” 1974. Those Swedes look super-warm lounging in their fur coats and mittens on top of that snow! It’s been a long and crazy weekend and during that time, this album somehow appeared in my office so I’m taking it as sign that I’m supposed to listen to some rather bland 70′s soft rock today. Hooked on a Feeling was the band’s first (of two) albums, consisting mainly of cover songs. The title track “Hooked on a Feeling” was the band’s big hit (#1 in the US); it’s a cover of B.J. Thomas’ 1968 song but inspired by the 1971 version by Jonathan King, specifically the ooga-chucka stuff that leads off the track. I’m quite fond of that song but mostly because of its inclusion on the 1992 Reservoir Dogs soundtrack which is honestly the first time I recall hearing it (I’m sure I heard it on AM radio back in the 70′s but I was pretty young at the time) and more recently in Guardians of the Galaxy. Other covers include “Never My Love” (written by the Addrisi Brothers, its best known version is by The Association, ‘67) which Blue Swede took to #7 in the US in ‘74, “Destiny” by Jose Feliciano, “Something’s Burning” by Mac Davis (Blue Swede’s rendition is actually pretty decent), “Working in the Coal Mine” by Allen Toussaint (I’m having a hard time envisioning those six Swedes actually working in a coal mine) and “Always Something There to Remind Me” by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, which I know - and love - best from the Naked Eyes new wave version. The original songs are not so great bubble-gum pop, especially the track “Silly Milly” which is silly but was a minor hit for Blue Swede, going to #71 in the US in ‘74.

Today a video request from Erick. He asked for Excuse Me from the 1971 Something Else album. Here you can watch two live versions of this song. One is from the 1972 performance at The Talk Of The Town and one from the British/German 1972 documentary All About Shirley.
This song was the most discussed Dame Shirley Bassey song on YouTube when I uploaded it for the first time many years ago.
The song is so very special because of the huge power and emotion she puts in it. It is always nice to show this clip to people who don’t know Shirley and her music very well. Also because it is not the most obvious choice among all the other well known songs she sings live. Apparently it was Shirley’s favourite song on the album and she said it was almost too emotional to sing live. Another song that had a similar impact was Somehow from the Never Never Never album and was sung at the Royal Albert Hall concert in 1973.
In the 1972 version of This Is Your Life Liberace had to say this. He bought an 8-track from Shirley’s new album at the time: Something Else. He was driving home by car while playing Excuse Me and got so overwhelmed by it that he had to pull his car to the side of the road. He could not concentrate to drive. The police almost arrested him because he was parking in an illegal zone.
Excuse Me
Written by the Addrisi Brothers: Don Addrisi and Dick Addrisi.
Released 1971 on the album Something Else.
The song is available on CD on the re-released Something Else album.
This song had been released in the 1960’s as a single by Kiki Dee (Pauline Matthews), but failed to make the charts.
Lyrics:
Excuse me
But would you repeat that phrase
I could have sworn I heard you say
You don’t care no more
Excuse me
But I can’t believe my ears
You mean after all these years
You just don’t care no more
You can’t mean it
Please look at me and say
That we’re really through
Oh I see it
Now you look at me that way
Suddenly I know it’s true
Excuse me
I can’t seem to find the door
And my feet don’t find the floor
For my legs are numb and weak
And my throat ‘s too dry to speak
But my heart wants so to scream
For this nightmare’s not a dream
You don’t care no more
You don’t care no more
You just don’t
Care no more
