Crate Digger’s Corner: When It Hits The Midnight Hour At The Turf

10/6/2019- Turf Club, St. Paul, MN

On a beautiful, peaceful fall night, the Turf Club is hosting The Midnight Hour on the last stop of their tour across the country. The Midnight Hour consists of hip-hop/electronic/soul producer/multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge and DJ/producer/rapper/multi-instrumentalist Ali Shaheed Muhammad. For the most part, the two played all the instruments on the album and brought in friends to perform vocals for the songs that needed them. I was very interested in how they were going to handle that live. They went the route that I figured they’d use, they had a band backing them, and they stuck largely to keys (Adrian Younge) and bass (Ali Shaheed Muhammad) for the live show. The band backing them was the Jack Waterson band and they were tight, and a perfect complement to the two leaders. They also had a female and male singer that took the vocals for the tunes that needed them, and each had wonderful voices. The show opened with the band playing the Midnight Hour theme, while the two leaders made their way onto the stage. They then opened with ‘Black Beacon’ the opening tune from their album. From there, they played most of their first album, and sprinkled in tunes from an upcoming album. The band was fantastic! The drummer was exceptional whether creating a pocket, playing a shuffle rhythm, pushing a song forward or making sure the vibe stays laid back. He was truly up to the task. Jack Waterson on guitar and Younge on keys used great comping skills, and also both were able to step up with nice solos that were both on point and to the point. Waterson also did some nice work with his set up, creating great delay effects when needed. Shaheed’s bass skills were also excellent, and he finds some really interesting lines to play.  At a couple points the two main artists did switch to secondary instruments for a couple songs, which also included the drummer playing keys for a couple songs. That showed the amount of talent present no matter what they were playing. They ended the night playing songs from their individual catalogs. Before they left the stage, Ali Shaheed Muhammad gave a 5 minute speech, thanking the crowd and sending a message of positivity to send the audience home for the night. It was a great, relaxed night of beautiful music.
