Agra & the Taj Mahal

February 23, 2020

Early is word for this trip.  We met our delightful escort, Raju in the lobby and ubered to the train station.  Over the shock of the Delhi driving habits and incessant horns, I soaked in the poverty as we traversed the cross-city route. 

The Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station …. yet another hive of humanity doing what I suppose we all do, either: Move purposefully through our day, Wander along semi-lost or Just do what it takes to survive.  Raju located our track, our car and our assigned seats on the rather comfy “fast train” for the two hours to Agra.  Efficient wait staff even served us a meal enroute.

I’m a big fan of cultural immersion, but no matter how many times I dunk my taste buds into the Indian cuisine selections presented, I’m underwhelmed.  Everything is super spicy (not my genre) or of a semi-liquid texture (ditto) and with lots of sauces.  But props to the train line for service and selection.

In Agra I excitedly leapt onto a platform strewn with wandering goats, local travelers and many of who were carrying very large bags atop their heads.  Our local professional guide, Ahmet met the three of us and ushered us into a waiting (white) car.  Due to the impending arrival of a certain dignitary, the streets had been newly cleaned, walls painted, pots of flowers and really BIG posters of Trump and President Modi placed along the entire way.

A check in at the lovely Atulyaa Taj then a mere 5 minute walk the big daddy of all sights here…the Taj Mahal!!   Again, thanks to the imminent arrival of the US President, the gardens overflowed with orange and yellow blooms, manicured lawns and the Taj scrubbed to her lovely best (per our guide).  Not that she needs anything to make her more impressive, as I was awed at first sight!

I’ll let the pictures speak to her splendor but the effect she exerts over her visitors is enhanced by her back story.  The Taj, is a mausoleum built in 1632 by the Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan for his 4th and favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal the year after she died in child birth (note:  to their 14th child?!!).  His love so profound and grief so deep, he erected this erethral monument, employing 20,000 artisans and costing a substantial portion the royal income over the 20-year project.   The exterior grandeur eclipses even the lovely artistic design and craftsmanship of the interior burial room, mosque and museum.

On to another UNESCO World Heritage stop for the day:  The Agra Fort.  The King’s palace, a fierce red-sand stone fortress encased the loveliest of marble structures, every inch inlayed with gems and precious stones. It’s verandas, supported by elegant Peacock arches, offered a grand view of the sacred Yuma river and Taj Mahal. The King served his last seven years of life on house arrest (ordered by his son) in this 94-acre walled city where he could view the Taj and grieve his beloved.

Through more “exciting” city traffic, this time by Tuk-Tuk.  The Agra dirt roads delivered the same erratic driving, unabating horn honking and lack of basic road rules leading to an inevitable accident.  Yes, Wade was nearly decapitated by a protruding bar of metal on a passing Tuk!  The metal instead struck the side of car’s side and prompted a road rage incident between the two drivers?!  After some grabbing and much shouting whey each went their ways and we proceeded to our next sight.

A precursor to the Taj Mahal, the “Baby Taj” sparkled of the same pure white marble with a lace-like appearance from the honeycombed walls. Built by one of the wives of the Emperor Shah Jahan as a burial site for her family, it too is surrounded by lovely gardens and sits along the Yamuna river.

Our last locale of the day was the park and gardens directly across the river from the Taj and the perfect place to see the sunset cast it’s golden hue on the Taj’s vivid white marble.  Although the colors were dampened by the haze (pollution fog) this evening, the peaceful (and quiet) park felt like a breath of fresh air.

Exhaustion had set in, but after another heavily traffic laden route we enjoyed an evening meal at the rooftop restaurant overlooking the silhouette of the Taj.

The sad thing is that Shah Jahan was captured by his own son and placed in Agra Fort where he could only see the Taj Mahal. When he died in 1666 he was buried next to his wife.

Rajasthan – eine Reise im Norden Indiens

In Rajasthan gibt es jede Menge Kultur zu entdecken. Von alten Festungen über Bauten, die an ein Märchen aus 1001 Nacht erinnern. Frauen in farbenprächtigen Saris, Kühe an jeder Straßenecke und manchmal gogar ein Kamel. Rajasthan ist ein beeindruckender Bundesstaat im Norden Indiens, in dem es viel zu entdecken gibt.

Jaipur – die Pinke Stadt

Nachdem ich bereits in Dehli und Agra war, sollte ich die folgenden zwei Wochen durch Rajasthan reisen. Meine erste Station in dem nordindischen Bundesstaat war Jaipur, die sogenannte „Pink City“. Ich bin mit dem Zug von Agra angereist. Eine wichtige Sehenswürdigkeiten ist der „Hawal Mahal“, der Palast der Winde und der Stadtpalast. Die Altstadt gehört zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe und die prachtvollen Bauten erinnerten mich oft an einen orientalischen Märchenfilm.

Pushkar – die Stadt am heiligen See

Von Jaipur aus sollte mich meine Reise nach Pushkar führen. Da es in Pushkar keinen Bahnhof gibt, bin ich mit dem Zug nach Ajmer gereist. Von dort aus ging es mit dem Tuktuk nach Pushkar. Für die Anreise vom Bahnhof zahlt man 600 Rupies, das ca 7,50 Euro entspricht. Schon auf der Fahrt dorthin konnte ich die wunderschöne Landschaft bestaunen. Der See an dem Pushkar liegt, ist für viele Hindus heilig und eine Pilgerstätte. Aus diesem Grund sieht man in der Stadt viele gläubige Hindus aber auch viele Touristen und jede Menge „Rooftop Restaurants“ und „Reggae Bars“.

Natürlich gibt es auch wieder unzählige Geschäfte in denen man günstig Kleidung und Souvenirs kaufen kann. Ein echtes Highlight für mich war der Savitri Temple. Dieser Tempel liegt auf einem Hügel. Ich bin mit der Seilbahn hoch gefahren und nach unten habe ich die Treppen genommen. Der Ausblick von oben war einfach atemberaubend und auch die vielen Affen haben den Ausflug zu einem Erlebnis gemacht.

Jaisalmer – die goldene Stadt

In Jaisalamer angekommen hatte ich wieder das Gefühl in einem Märchen aus 1001 Nacht gelandet zu sein. Die Häuser sind alle aus Sandstein gebaut und über der Stadt ragt die alte Festung hervor. Jaisalmer wird auch die goldene Stadt genannt. In den schmalen Gassen der Innenstadt und der Festung gibt es wieder einmal unzählige Shops in denen man Handwerk, bestickte Decken, Schals und Kleidung kaufen kann. Ein echtes Highlight ist jedoch ein Ausflug in die Wüste. Viele buchen eine Kamel Safari, die meistens auch eine Übernachtung in der Wüste mit beinhaltet.

Udaipur – die Stadt der Seen

Udaipur wird von einigen auch das Venedig des Orients genannt. Es liegt an vier künstlich angelegten Seen und gilt auch als die romantische Stadt von Rajasthan. Für mich war Udaipur ein echtes Highlight. Es ist eine sehr touristische Stadt. Jedoch sprechen aus diesem Grund auch mehr Leute Englisch und es gibt, wie auch schon in Pushkar, jede Menge „Rooftopbars“ von denen man den Ausblick auf die Seen bestaunen kann. Eine weitere Attraktion in Udaipur ist auch hier das Fort und der Stadtpalast.

In Rajasthan findet man sehr viel Kultur und alte Traditionen. Es kann manchmal etwas schwierig sein, wenn man auf der einen Seite die ganze Zeit von Händlern angesprochen wird und auf der anderen Seite kaum jemand Englisch spricht. Oft wird man als Ausländer angestarrt und nach einem Foto gefragt. Auch dies sollte man gelassen sehen. der Norden Indiens ist generell traditioneller und konservativer. Aber wer einfach mal in eine andere Welt abtauchen möchte, dem empfehle ich eine Reise nach Rajasthan. Es lohnt sich.
