Geisha exist all over Japan...
Geisha exist all around Japan, not only in Kyoto!
Notes:
-> If a city/district is crossed out, that means the Hanamachi is defunct.
-> If there is no city listed under a prefecture name, that means I don’t know of any cities in that prefecture that have or had Hanamachi
-> Hyperlinks lead to entries on this blog tagged with that specific city
-> The content you see here is undergoing changes, since there is always a possibility that I find more informations

The NHK documentary is a bit older and it focuses on one okiya (Anjo I think was the name) and you can find it on youtube. It's called the geiko's journey. Aichi actually had a western woman as a geisha as well. Ibu from Ukraine but she had to leave because of family issues. Sad because she also seemed very sweet and elegant.
Oh, I remember this documentary! It’s quite good. For those who want to see it you can find it in 5 parts on Youtube here:Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5

Shibori Darari Obi 1920s. A maiko (apprentice geisha) displaying her darari obi (dangling sash) decorated with intricate shibori (tie-dye) patterns, which give a three-dimensional effect. This kind of sophisticated shibori work is usually associated with the area surrounding the village of Arimatsu in Aichi Prefecture and is known as Arimatsu Narumi Shibori. How can I go about finding a okiyas website or recruitment page? Maybe I have not went deep enough but I find it difficult... I know there is a chance for western geishas, so there should be a chance for hangyoku too. Also, can hangyoku live on their own? I'm actually finding it also difficult to find any information on a typical routine of a okiya outside of Kyoto. I've been browsing for hours.
Yes, I know that there is currently a young lady from the US who is training to be a Hangyoku (not sure if she debuted yet) in Tokyo. Unlike in Kyoto, the Hangyoku seem to live in their own homes.
Here’s the recruitment page from Ryuto Shinko (Niigata Furisode- and Tomesode-san), it also gives a bit of info about the daily routine https://www.ryuto-shinko.co.jp/recruit/ Same for Hakata (Fukuoka): http://hakatakenban.com/recruit/ Shizuoka recruitment info: https://www.shizuoka-dentogeino.jp/about/recruitment/ Also a quick summary of cities who took in women from outside of Japan before: Yugawara (2009 or earlier), Aichi (2010), Izunokuni (2011), Shimoda (2011), Tokyo-Shinagawa (2015 or earlier). About the foreign geisha, there is/was more. In Aichi there was Ibu/Eve who was Polish (I think) , Shimoda had a Chinese woman Rinka don't know is she's still working and I did read about a Romanian women Momotaro working somewhere. So there are/were more.
Ibu was from the Ukraine. There were a couple of news reports about a chinese woman debuting in Shimoda as "Rinka", but yeah, she likely retired.
Around the same time, a chinese woman with the Geimei "Rina" debuted in Gifu. This Rina is still active as a Geiko.
I know them all but didn’t list them because the asker specifically asked for Tokyo.

Hi! There was a question not long ago and they said something about a documentary of geisha on Aichi? Do you know some documentaries of geisha outside Kyoto? Thanks :3
Not really. I did find one about the new Nara girls (here). Maybe some readers would like to send in their recommendations? ^^

As being a geisha is very different outside Kyoto (and Tokyo) in smaller cities like Aichi etc do you think the geisha there are less skilled compared to their counterparts in the large cities. I watched a older documentary about Aichi geishas and yes their lives were very different but they still seemed to work hard on their lessons. Do you think it would be better to these districts to vanish so that Kyoto would be the only place to see geisha.
Not at all! They still have rigorous training schedules with accredited teachers, so they are just as talented as the women in Kyoto.
