I know this question might seem a bit controversial and I swear I don’t mean it in any offensive manner, I am just trying to get a second opinion on that matter since I never talk about woso irl and your blog seems very nice and helpful. Do you think the reduction or perceiving of Alexia as ‘beautiful’ by people outside woso has to do with how we as fans talk about her often? something happened to me couple of weeks ago with one of my friends and long story short I found out that she follows some fan account of Alexia in Instagram and ik she knows shit about football and woso and when I asked her if she knew who that is she simply told me “she is a very good looking barça player” and it just sent my head to Mars like instantly idk why but I was very disappointed that she reduced everything she ever achieved, her legendary status, her leadership, personality, all these stuff she knew nothing about and all that reached her was her photos and looks like she doesn’t even follow her actual account cuz as per her words “it is dull and full of football stuff” I mean, SHE IS A FREAKING FOOTBALLER! she follows messi and other male footballers for who they are, but for some reason she doesn’t seem interested in what Alexia is or idk. Worst part is that this isn’t the first time irl for me to encounter similar situation and it was also about Alexia and the “good looking” thing before anything else! I am genuinely lost like, Where did we go wrong here? Are we doing her more harm than good? Is she the exception of the rule or we gonna have to suffer from the same fate with Aitana and whoever comes after, that their achievements will be marginalized by their looks!
hi anon. so, i don't think it's up to anyone to police content creators and tell them to stop making fan edits of alexia because of the remote chance a social media algorithm decides to show it to a non-football fan?! and even if that happens, what's the actual harm you are concerned about? if 10 people start following alexia because of her looks, but 1 out of that 10 starts to learn about women's football through that, isn't that a net benefit?
i'm not naive to see that alexia did benefit from a huge marketing push from barça because she has the trifecta (excellent footballer, conventional good looks, and she's catalan). and if we zoom in, the larger point as to what you are describing has nothing to do with alexia, specifically. that is just how the world works.
if you look at some of the female footballers on instagram with the most followers, what do they have in common?! and i can tell you that a significant portion of those followers don't know anything about women's football!

so this is not something that happens to alexia only. this is happening to all female footballers and across the entertainment industry as a whole. the more conventionally attractive you are, the more brand deals and sponsorships you will get in return. why are alexia and salma the faces of nike for liga f and not other players? the same goes for mapi for adidas, and frido/ingrid for puma.
but to play devil's advocate, you have to ask yourself: if your friend isn't a football fan at all, then why does it matter how futfem/woso fans talk about her? yes in an ideal world we would appreciate athletes based on merit alone, but this isn't an ideal world and that's not how fandom nor society at large works. so is it better that she recognises alexia in some capacity than not at all? because at least she can appreciate alexia on some level and perhaps that is the gateway for her to learn more about alexia and appreciate her on a footballing level too. maybe that doesn't happen immediately, but there's still a chance. food for thought...

Was the players choice for the kits announcement with a certain criteria? I know aitana and alexia are the most popular/accomplished but that wasn’t the case for the mens choice (two youngsters), I thought it has to do with la masia but alexia is not from it, it might have to do with nike but aitana, mapi, and vicky are all adidas, and frido and engen are puma, like how come they didn’t choose salma or even graham! idk do you know if these things are part of players contracts or something? TIA x
yes, barça specifically chose balde, gavi, alexia, and aitana for this campaign. because the kit announcement video was steeped in nostalgia and showcase many barça heroes, the four players chosen for the shirt campaign represent the present and future of barça today.
as sport.es reveals, balde and gavi were chosen because they are two jewels of la masia in the first team with a fixed contract and a permanent position for next season. alexia and aitana were chosen because they are the last two ballon d'or winners, world cup winners with spain and three-time european champions with barça as leaders of the women's project.
so it's a way to showcase the current success of the women's team and the future of the men's team, which is heavily reliant on la masia and youth talent to propel them forward.
