HARDING DRIVES NENANA GOLDEN SPIKE TO COMPLETE AKRR
Tumblr media
On July 15, 1923, President Warren Harding drove the “Golden Spike” at Nenana. This signified the completion of the interior Alaska Railroad. Coincidentally, this also occurred during Harding’s “Voyage of Understanding” to both Alaska and Canada...READ MORE

Alaska Fall 2019
Days 3 & 4 – Anchorage to Talkeetna
The highlight of Day 3 in Anchorage was brunch. Have you ever heard of a breakfast-only restaurant that has an hour wait mid-morning on a weekday? Thanks to Yelp we found one, and luckily it takes reservations, which allowed us to skip the wait. Let’s just say we still weren’t hungry again at dinnertime. Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon cakes and king crab cakes! Omelet stuffed with snow crab! Best hash browns either of us have ever eaten! Oh my! If you ever get to Anchorage a breakfast at Snow City Café is a must. Just be sure to make reservations.
Today (Day 4) was our first ride on the railroad. Finally using the advantage of our way-too-close-to-the-station hotel, we skipped down the hill and boarded our train for the ride north from Anchorage to Talkeetna, on AKRR’s Denali Star train. We’re seated in the dome car which gives us a great show of the passing scenery, even though the day was a bit rainy (which everyone’s thrilled with as it’s a blessing to the firefighters battling the local blazes).
Tumblr media
When I looked at the pictures I’d taken I learned that it’s hard to take non-blurry pictures from a moving train, especially on a not-so-bright day which results in a slow shutter speed. One of the few decent ones shows the Chugach mountains just north of Anchorage, with one of the Meadow Lakes in the foreground.
Tumblr media
From the Talkeetna train station we hiked the mile to our little log cabin in the woods we’d found on VRBO.
Tumblr media
A cozy little studio, well-stocked and with all necessary amenities. It even has a sauna! It’s owned by a couple from Hawaii and the décor is an interesting mix of two cultures – a surfboard on one wall with a moose head on the opposite.
Tumblr media
We’d noticed a bike shop on the walk in, so we decided to go back and rent bikes to help us get around and explore, as our cabin is a bit out of town. Taking a ride into ‘downtown’ Talkeetna and beyond, we enjoyed the fall colors near the confluence of the Talkeetna and Susitna rivers. Yes, fall colors! Fall colors hadn’t even crossed our minds as we’re still a month or so away from them at home, but up here the fall and winter come early, and the birch trees are beginning to show their stuff.
Tumblr media
Talkeetna is about the size of Graeagle, with just over 800 residents. Similar in some ways but lots more tacky bars and restaurants and souvenir shops here as it’s a popular day trip for cruise ship passengers from Anchorage. The town was pretty packed this afternoon but I suspect it’ll be less so when we pedal back in later on for some dinner. We did stop at the only market in town, the “world famous Nagley’s Store” to pick up some provisions. Other than the display of antlers and snowshoes on the front, the store has nothing on the Graeagle Market with just a fraction of the items available. No produce, no fresh meats, really just basic convenience store fare. Our Graeagle Market is even a few years older!
Tumblr media
Talkeetna residents have to drive 14 miles to the nearest real grocery store. Or just shoot it themselves I guess.
