Good morning America! From Munich we watch football!! Not in Munich per se, on tv in my case on my computer. Brady is back! Wonderful. I just started watching it, there’s 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter. I already enjoy the German cheer! Alright, let’s play football! And let’s talk politics! I enjoyed the midterm elections. What? After all the people that I wanted in power did not sweep the floor as some expected. I thought it would be worse, actually. The election system is vulnerable. It needs to change. Both parties called for it, when they lost. And we should be sick of it. No election should ever be vulnerable. I love that Florida is solid. I love how they handled the pandemic, love how they handled vaccines, love how they handled “peaceful” protests. I love that so many races are still close to call. How some were close. I think it’s insane to have elected candidates that can barely speak a coherent phrase. There won’t be a new normal, Biden. It’s clear that there were shenanigans in Arizona. I love that a Republican ousted a long-standing Democrat in New York, I have always heard of Sean Patrick Maloney, the guy was untouchable, who incidentally blamed Alexandra Ocasio for their loss, move to the right New York! Why? Because they work a lot harder and smarter for you than Democrats do. Crime, crime, crime? The bull crap illusion that they care for the poor and the people? Gee how did Cuomo do? The Democrat party is a phony. Anyone that used Jan 6 as a political tactic is insane. Jan 6 was nothing compared to the Floyd riots. To think that it put Democracy at threat is pathetic. Why did the capitol police let the people in, if it was that threatening? They literally opened the door for them to come in. More importantly, why did Nancy Pelosi and the DC Mayor refused the National Guard that Trump offered? I had to hear Obama, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders use Jan 6 to save our Governor from the recall he deserved, his corruption, the insane homelessness in California, his 2 years of State of Emergency, I bet kids starved from not getting school food while his kids went to private school. While he closed all small businesses but let his winery open. While he declined an audit on the homeless budget when California spends the most on it yet has the most homelessness in the country? It’s absurd. How can anyone vote for Nancy Pelosi is absurd. Her district is a piece of crap, literally. Wow the Germans are going nuts with the Seahawks touchdown. It’s 21- 16 Bucs. What a game. Yes I loved the midterms. We stand strong.

In 1889, on November 1 in Gotha, Germany Anna Therese Johanne Hoch, who later would be known as Hannah Hoch was born. Being the eldest of five children, the girl was brought up in a comfortable and quiet environment of the small town. Her parents, a supervisor in an insurance company and an amateur painter sent her to Girl’s High school. However, at the age of 15 Hannah had to quit studying for the long six years to take care of her newborn sister. Only in 1912 she continued her education with Harold Bengen in School of Applied Arts, mastering glass design. As the World War I broke up Hannah returned to the native town to work in the Red Cross. The first years after war the young woman recommenced her studying, getting to know graphic arts. 1915 was highlighted by an acquaintance with an Austrian artist Raoul Hausmann, which grew into the long-lasting romantic relationship and involvement in Berlin Dada movement. For ten years till 1926 Hoch worked in Berlin’s major publisher of newspapers and magazines. Her task was to design embroidering, knitting and crocheting patterns for the booklets. Being on vacation with her beloved in 1918, Hannah discovered ‘the principle of photomontage in cut-and-paste images that soldiers sent to their families’ (National gallery of Art). This find affected greatly on her artistic production, and she created mass-media photographs comprising the elements of photomontage and handwork patterns, thus combining traditional and modern culture. Her prior preoccupation was to represent the ‘new woman’ of the Weimar Republic with new social role and given freedoms. Hoch was the only woman in Berlin Dada, who took part in all kinds of events and exhibitions showcasing her socially critical works of art. Till 1931 she participated in exhibitions but with the rise of National Social regime was forbidden to present her creative work. Till her last breath in 1978 Hannah Hoch lived and worked in the outskirts of Berlin-Heiligensee. The piece of art which is going to be analyzed in this research is ‘The beautiful girl’ designed in 1919–1920. It combines the elements of technology and females. In the middle of the picture one can clearly see a woman dressed in a modern bathing suit with a light bulb on her head which probably serves as a sun umbrella. In the background a large advertisement with a woman’s hair-do on top is presented. Maud Lavin describes strange human as ‘she is part human, part machine, part commodity’ (Lavin). The woman is surrounded by the images of industrialization as tires, gears, signals and BMW logos. A woman’s profile with the cat eyes, untrusting and skeptical, in the upper right corner is eye-catching as well. This unusually large eye symbolizes DADA movement — a monocle, which is present in almost every Hoch’s work. The colour scheme does not offer rich palette of tints, including mostly black, white, orange and red pieces. The photo is surrounded by the BMW circles which add the spots of blue. An apt description of the piece is given in the book ‘Cut with the Kitchen Knife’ and states that it is ‘a portrait of a modern woman defined by signs of femininity, technology, media and advertising’ (Lavin). In other words Hannah Hoch focused on the woman of the new age, free and keeping up with the fast-moving world. The artist promoted feministic ideas and from her point of view urbanization and modern technologies were meant to give hope to woman to gain equality of genders. With this photomontage she commented on how the woman was expected to combine the role of a wife and mother with the role of a worker in the industrialized world. The light bulb instead of a face shows that women were perceived as unthinking machines which do not question their position and can be turned on or off at any time at man’s will. But at the same time they were to remain attractive to satisfy men’s needs. The watch is viewed as the representation of how quickly women are to adapt to the changes. In a nutshell, Hoch concentrated on two opposite visions of the modern woman: the one from the television screens — smoking, working, wearing sexy clothes, voting and the real one who remained being a housewife. The beautiful girl’ is an example of the art within the DADA movement. An artistic and literal current began in 1916 as the reaction to World War I and spread throughout Northern America and Europe. Every single convention was challenged and bourgeois society was scandalized. The Dadaists stated that over-valuing conformity, classism and nationalism among modern cultures led to horrors of the World War I. In other words, they rejected logic and reason and turned to irrationality, chaos and nonsense. The first DADA international Fair was organized in Berlin in 1920 exposing a shocking discontentment with military and German nationalism (Dada. A five minute history). Hannah Hoch was introduced to the world of DADA by Raoul Hausman who together with Kurt Schwitters, Piet Mondrian and Hans Richter was one of the influential artists in the movement. Hoch became the only German woman who referred to DADA. She managed to follow the general Dadaist aesthetic, but at the same time she surely and steadily incorporated a feminist philosophy. Her aim was to submit female equality within the canvass of other DADA’s conceptions. Though Hannah Hoch officially was a member of the movement, she never became the true one, because men saw her only as ‘a charming and gifted amateur artist’ (Lavin). Hans Richter, an unofficial spokesperson shared his opinion about the only woman in their community in the following words: ‘the girl who produced sandwiches, beer and coffee on a limited budget’ forgetting that she was among the few members with stable income. In spite of the gender oppressions, Hannah’s desire to convey her idea was never weakened. Difficulties only strengthened her and made her an outstanding artist. A note with these return words was found among her possessions: ‘None of these men were satisfied with just an ordinary woman. But neither were they included to abandon the (conventional) male/masculine morality toward the woman. Enlightened by Freud, in protest against the older generation. . . they all desired this ‘New Woman’ and her groundbreaking will to freedom. But — they more or less brutally rejected the notion that they, too, had to adopt new attitudes. . . This led to these truly Strinbergian dramas that typified the private lives of these men’ (Maloney). Hoch’s technique was characterized by fusing male and female parts of the body or bodies of females from different epochs — a ‘traditional’ woman and ‘modern’, liberated and free of sexual stereotypes one. What’s more, combining male and female parts, the female ones were always more distinctive and vibrant, while the male ones took their place in the background. Hannah created unique works of art experimenting with paintings, collages, graphic and photography. Her women were made from bits and pieces from dolls, mannequins of brides or children as these members of the society were not considered as valuable. Today Hannah Hoch is most associated with her famous photomontage ‘Cut with the kitchen knife DADA through the last Weimer Beer-Belly Cultural epoch of Germany’ (1919–1920). This piece of art highlights social confusion during the era of Weimar Republic, oppositionists and government radicals (Grabner). In spite of never being truly accepted by the rest of her society, this woman with a quiet voice managed to speak out loud her feministic message. Looking at Hannah Hoch’s art for the first time I found it confusing, because couldn’t comprehend the meaning. It was quite obvious that every single piece and structure is a symbol of the era, its ideas and beliefs. However, after having learned about her life and constant endeavors to declare about female’s right, little by little I started to realize what’s what. As an object for research I chose ‘The beautiful girl’ as, to my mind, its theme and message intersects with the modern tendency: a successful, clever, beautiful and free woman has to become one in no time, cause the world is moving faster and faster. I enjoyed working with this artist as her example is inspiring and is worth following

Savior Redrawn: Alexandra Savior returns with new album, The Archer
The Portland artist leaves the shadows behind her and paints some of the best songs she's ever written in new colors on her new album. NBHAP editor Austin Maloney caught up with the singer.
The woman with the best name in music, Alexandra Savior‘s career has tended to walk down strange paths to date. The Portland artist found herself plucked up by a major label at a young age, placed in stasis for years before eventually emerging with her debut album Belladonna Of Sadness, a dark, sharp album of creeping orchestral rock that lived in a underworld of strange people and emotions, written with Arctic Monkeys‘ Alex Turner. Belladonna was a great record, but maybe wasn’t the pop hit her label were looking for, and after it the Savior trail went quiet as she moved back to Portland and took stock. Happily, 30th Century Records stepped in to offer her a new deal, and she ended up in Brooklyn working with producer Sam Cohen on what would become her new album The Archer.
On The Archer, Savior paints with a wider palette of colours than ever before. Songs like opener “Soft Currents” and title track “The Archer” are simple, but bloom and grow into some of the most affecting she’s ever written. There’s plenty of songs that share DNA with Belladonna, like the strung-out and hazy “Saving Grace”, but things are generally lighter in tone, with pretty and playful tracks like “Can’t Help Myself” and looser, less conventionally-structured haunters like “The Phantom” and “But You” showcasing new sides to her writing. At the centre of it all, she’s still a compelling narrator and presenter of these songs, the voice that holds your hand and guides you throw her musical world (with lyrics that’ll hold your breath for you, like “The Archer”’s scene-setting opening line “The earth went ahead and shook itself apart the very moment I laid eyes on you”). I spoke to Savior ahead of the album’s release.
At the end of the Belladonna Of Sadness campaign, you were dropped by your label and moved back to Portland and went to college. What was that period like? Did you question your desire to continue with music?
It was a slow period in my life, I spent a lot of time dealing with my depression, and trying to redirect my career and life into a place that made me feel comfortable personally, and artistically. I am constantly questioning whether to continue with music or not, because truthfully it is a difficult life trying to support yourself with music, and by releasing music you open yourself up to a lot of judgement and criticism. But, I continue with my career because I inevitably keep writing all this crap, and giving up means learning an entirely different lifestyle from what I’ve always known. Even if sometimes I scorn the industry, the music itself brings me satisfaction.
Did you also feel that that was also a time of freedom? After all, you had been in the major label system a long time, and it hadn’t always been smooth sailing, with Belladonna long-delayed before its release. Was the fresh start liberating in a way?
After I overcome the initial feelings of rejection and uncertainty, there was a period when I really started to trust myself artistically for the first time since I signed with a major label when I was 18. I was completely detached from the industry side of music, so I lost myself in my writing for the first time in a long time, so yeah I guess it was liberating!
The Archer was recorded in three weeks in NY with Sam Cohen, but how long and how had you been writing and accumulating the songs that would end up on this album?
Oh gosh, I guess the first tune I wrote for the record was "Howl” in 2015, but realistically most of it was written in 2017 and ‘18. Creativity comes in spurts for me, so it can seem slow.
After spending a lot of time with the lyrics on this album, it struck me that the songs are more personal than on Belladonna. There aren’t really character sketches like “Frankie” and “Girlie” on this one so much, and the lyrical dialogue is more personal, a one-person narrative or between two people, rather than between people about others as on Belladonna. Would you agree with that assessment?
Yes, I think the lyrics are far more personal on this record. A lot of that had to do with my writing process, and my experiences at the time I was making the record. I felt a lot more comfortable writing on my own.
You said of this album “I felt like I needed to establish my own voice and show my independence again”. Did you feel that the downside of writing Belladonna with someone as famous as Alex Turner was that it tended to dominate the conversation around the record?
I went through my ups and downs with all of that. I don’t think I could have understood the ramifications of working with Alex, it could have gone a multitude of different ways. Before we started that record, I was a young and developing songwriter, and I saw working with someone with such an interesting writing perspective as Alex has, as an opportunity for me to learn as a writer. I didn’t understand at 18 what it meant to release a record, let alone to release a record recorded with someone so established, but in the end I understand why people ask me about him, I think that will lessen in time.
With the opener “Soft Currents”, and the closer “The Archer”, it struck me how simple the arrangement and production is on those two. Did you feel like they needed a light touch to keep their character, and what made them special, intact?
The arrangements of these two songs were kept simplistic because they’re quite emotional. When I brought them to Sam Cohen in November 2018, “Soft Currents” and “The Archer” were just iPhone recordings, and it just felt natural to keep them raw.
Your lyrics are always a notable part of your work, both for the melody of your words and the way you sketch scenarios and characters. What are the things you prioritize as a lyricist, and what’s your usual process for writing them?
Writing lyrics is my favorite thing about music because it’s challenging, it can be like putting a puzzle together. I generally start out with a chord progression on the guitar or piano, and then I hum around until I get a few melodies going. Writing words is really quite terrifying because sometimes it feels like everything has already been done. Generally, I try to prioritize honesty, if I don’t connect to the experience I am writing about, it is hard for me to perform that song live.
Overall, it seems like your vocal presence is quite unorthodox on this album. You’re sticking less to a consistent verse-chorus format on a lot of the songs, and instead tend to flit in and out of the songs with more freedom, and place your presence where you want it, and I think that lets you use it with more impact. Did you want to write in that slightly less structured way on this album?
Thanks for saying that! I don’t know, this whole record felt more like I was making a collage. My mind is very disorganized, that might be why things are less traditionally structured on this record. I wanted to let go of a lot of the perimeters I had built for myself as a songwriter, because overall that pressure to create something structured or ‘popular’ lead to me be less productive and more critical of my work.
If we take the title, The Archer, was that simply drawn from the lyrics on the title track, or does “The Archer” represent a bigger character in your imagination?
The title The Archer to me represents a character that is predatory in love, I wrote a lot about these sort of characters for this record because I’ve had a lot of experiences with predatory men in my life. And truthfully, astrology might have had an ounce to do with it …
If we take a look at your videos, a lot of the time you seem to be drawn to the kind of low-light, shadowy aspects of urban spaces and then the desert. What is it is about them that makes you feel they’re fitting visual spaces for your music?
I guess I’m drawn to those spaces naturally. I wish I could say I put more thought into it than that, I wish I could be a little more metaphorical here but really I just like the look of it all.
And finally, with the album out in January, can we expect to see you in Europe next year for shows?
Yes! Happy to say I’ll be touring Europe May 2020.
The Archer is out January 10th on 30th Century Records.

La copa menstrual: una gran desconocida
Alexandra Caballero Guzmán
Médica, Magíster en salud sexual y reproductiva

Contacto:  [email protected]

Summary: Alex feels like a blank slate, and then the anger begins to build.
N.B.: Also posted on AO3
Alex awoke, feeling like she was underwater. She could hear voices, but they were distorted, as if sounding from far away. It was the red light of the monitor she saw first as she uncrossed her arms, pulling her hand away from her head. The headache had returned, coming to a mild throb she could deal with.
“Agent Danvers?” J’onn said, and all the voices were loud and clear again, like her head had broken the surface.
Alex turned and faced him. Had she fallen asleep for a moment?
“Are you okay?” he asked, voice low so the others wouldn’t hear. Alex flicked her fingers a quiet gesture meant to carry that everything was fine, even as the disembodied voice calling her name rang through her ears. It had known her by name. What the hell had that been?
“We can talk about the recruits later.”
The recruits. She blinked and shook her head. “No, it’s fine,” she answered. “What did you want to say.”
“Just that your recruits showed well. I was particularly impressed by Felipe Ramiez.”
Alex nodded, she had been too. He’d always been quiet in training, joking with a few others –– especially Nilo –– but maybe there was something more that she had missed there. “His Aunt nominated him. She works with Lucy Lane.”
“Ah,” J’onn said, summing up his thoughts in that singular sound. It was neither good nor bad the way he said it. But there was a larger depth to it than indifference.
Alex hadn’t met Ramiez’s aunt, but considering that Lucy had personally mentioned Felipe on behalf of her, then she must be a good person. He certainly was. “The others did well. You should be proud,” J’onn said.
Alex couldn’t find the words to respond. She felt as though there was an absence of something in her. Everything felt muted all at once and she didn’t know if she had felt any pride, wasn’t even sure if there was a shred of anger to pick at. It was like that brief moment of falling asleep had rebooted her system, wiping all emotions clear.
“Thanks,” she responded, because it was necessary. And then, “I’ll see you tomorrow,”
“Tomorrow, then,” J’onn agreed.
Alex turned away from J’onn and watched as everyone began packing up. Ngo stood, his expression the same mixture of disappointment and pride that Alex felt should have reflected on her own face. It didn’t matter, she would find it soon.
“Danvers,” Ngo said, giving her a short nod. He had a silver pen in his hand a series of notes in shorthand from the small notebook he always carried. “Your team did well.”
“As did yours,” she responded out of respect. There was truth to her words. His team had done more than could have ever been expected of her in the same time in training. Perhaps the truth was that they both could only see their own failures.
There was still plenty of time to find out what type of people their recruits were going to be, but Alex knew that the both of them had hoped for better results. No one stood out in any astonishing way, but they had certainly found themselves disappointed.
She drew in a deep breath, feeling a wave of disappointment edge back into her system. It felt cold and sapped at the remainder energy she had for the day. Still, she had to speak to her recruits. They wouldn’t know what to do with themselves now that it was done.
Alex made her way down to where her recruits were. The steps down the three floors seemed heavy and loud in her ears, continuing for what felt like two floors more than she remembered. She couldn’t muster up the anger any more for the boost of sudden energy, it was gone. All she felt was tired.
The metal door that lead out of the stairwell creaked, but her team didn’t even look her way, too distracted in their own victories. She’d have to unteach them that.
Once, someone had made a Harry Potter joke out in the hall about her. “You know Alex, Constant vigilance!” It had stung, but if she was been truthful, there was a lot about the character Moody she felt was under appreciated.
The recruits were underneath the spotlights, near where all the vans had been parked, and Alex could see them high-fiveing one another, as they re-told their exploits. Saunders stood apart, deep shame across her face as she watched them with a sense of envy.
Those of the group that had been injured were now fine after being patched by the medics, no worse for wear except maybe for Tahlia, whose eyes were reddened by the tear gas. Nonetheless, she was laughing with the others, a wide grin as she laughed as Kelly re-told a mocking visual tale of what happened to her.
She was going to crush their happiness, Alex realised. But it had to happen.
Alex walked over, boots heavy on the concrete until their heads swivelled around and her recruits shaped up, standing with their back straight, arms behind them in line; they were awaiting her appraisal, Alex realised. Their expression bright with happiness for the most part.
“You’re dismissed,” she told them.
The group looked surprised, and then concerned.
“But ––“ Kelly began.
“Just…” she felt the word spit from her mouth, frustrated at the touch of a raw nerve. The last thing she needed was someone speaking out of turn. “Just go home,” she said. “I’ll discuss it tomorrow.”
Before any of them could say another word, Alex turned away, as she walked back to the building, she heard the low shuffle of confused conversation, the murmuring became short and snappy with resentment or with misplaced optimism that it was all a joke. No doubt, her recruits would stew over it, thinking the worst.
What did it matter? She was their superior, not their friend. That was an easy enough box to close and end any sour feelings that might try to bubble out.
Alex made her way back into the building and upstairs to finish packing up. It was done fast and quick, the volunteers used to packing up gear in a short time. Boxes clicked shut, wires were wound up and everyone moved the cases either into the vans or back into place.
When everything was done, she took a ride with one of the volunteers, back to the DEO and helped them pack all the things into one of the storage rooms for the next training simulation or surveillance mission that required it, each one going into their designated spot, lest Winn got word that they hadn’t followed his precise stickers labelled L.2.3v to signal where each thing belonged.
Just as she was leaving, Winn ducked her head in, probably to ensure no one had messed up his boxes, and then flinched. “Didn’t go well?” he asked.
“It went fine,” Alex said. “They completed the mission in due time. Only four of them were removed by the medics. Would have been better if it’d been none, but a few them aren’t going to finish the program anyway.”
“Alex?”
“What?” she asked, all at once her anger return. Then, drawing in a breath, she pushed her mood back down. “I’m…I’m tired Winn. I’ve been doing this all day. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he said. “I’ll go to someone else. It’s fine.”
Alex nodded. She knew she should prod at what Winn really wanted from her, but at this time, she really honestly did not care. She wanted a shower, she wanted a drink. She didn’t want to be at work for a moment longer.
On the way home, she felt the weight of her own failure in her team fall onto her shoulders. She hadn’t trained them enough, hadn’t worked with them enough to inspire team work, loyalty and responsibility. She’d only inspired Saunders to do something stupid. What kind of a trainer was she that she couldn’t get a small group of people to work past their differences and protect each other?
Dammit.
“Alex?”
God, did everyone need to talk to her today? She turned and looked at her neighbour, mustering enough to at least give a polite smile. “Mark, hi.”
“Hey, you’re out late.”
“Work,” she said shortly.
“Oh that…um, science job right?”
“Right,” she said, her teeth snapping over the word despite the smile. But despite the short answer, Mark seemed to linger, fiddling with the watch on his right hand before jiggling the keys he had in his other hand. It didn’t take more than Behavioural Science 101 to read anxious in his movements. “Was there something I could do?” she asked.
“So, the others have been noticing that your bike’s been taking up a car spot. As you know there’s a limit on car spots for residents at the moment…” Alex rolled her eyes as he kept speaking, unable to even be bothered with social etiquette at that point. “Do you mind…parking it somewhere else. It doesn’t really need to be taking up a whole space.”
God she wanted to punch his face. “Where should I park my bike, Mark?” she asked, her voice level and calm. “Because I’m pretty sure we’ve had this discussion before, and that an agreement was made,” her voice was getting louder. “That as part of the agreement for the lease included a fee for a car spot than I should be paying for a whole spot, not sharing some spot so Leon Maloney can park his boyfriend’s car!”
“Alexandra ––“
“The answer’s no,” she said cutting him off, levelling her voice back a normal range that didn’t echo around the concrete building. “You want me to move my bike from the car spot, then turn one of the park spots specifically into motorcycle parking and charge a quarter of the price.”
Motorcycle helmet in hand, Alex left the parking lot and went into the elevator. Her hand trembled as she pressed at the floor. Steading both it and the tightness in her chest, Alex dug at the anger and buried it back down. It wouldn’t do to allow her anger to win over her again, no matter how satisfying it might feel to go back down to the lot and punch Mark’s stupid face. Letting anger get the control over her would mean that the next time she interrogated someone, she might lose leverage for good. It wasn’t good enough.
The doors slid opened and Alex went to her apartment, heading inside as she dropped her bag down from work and took a moment to just stop and stretch at her aching muscles.
She needed to stop thinking about her recruits and yet somehow manage to get a full report done for them within the next week to hand over to J’onn. Just the thought of watching the surveillance cameras again had her skin itching to go and do something else, like a bar. Get into a fight, yell at somebody else.
Instead, she cleaned out her bag, and washed up the few cups she had lying around. Then, she went to the bathroom, stripping off to just bury herself underneath hot water as if she could burn the frustration from her skin. She felt tired, she felt like she could sleep as if there was something just under her skin and trying to get out.
She ate, and then drank a few beers. Only then did the anxiety begin to numb enough that she could sit down and drink a few more beers. East the leftover pizza in her fridge, drink some more and then fall asleep on the her couch, a knitted blanket over her lap as Netflix kept playing some random 90s sitcom before it eventually stopped to ask ‘Are you still there?’
She awoke to the sound of movement.
“Well,” Sara said. “You look worse for wear.” Alex opened her eyes, moving the arm she had thrown over her eyes to find herself staring at the silhouette of Sara, haloed by the cityscape behind her.
It was a strange feeling, as though she was waking up in a hotel room and nothing quite felt right. Tugging at the pyjamas shirt, she sat up and ran a hand through her hair. “What are you doing here?” she asked, groggy from sleep. Or maybe still a little tipsy. The world felt fuzzier than her usual dreams of Sara.
“Well, I don’t know. Usually you come and visit me, but it seems like I’m the one visiting you tonight.”
“Welcome,” she said, feeling the extent of her voice fall flat. “You can wake up if you want now.”
“You ok?”
“I’m fine,” Alex said, smiling bitterly. “Just…fine.”
“Ahh,” Sara said, nodding. “The famous Danvers ‘fine’. I’ve heard that one before. Last time it was the result of drinking but somehow I don’t get that this is the same situation.”
Alex turned and looked over at the beer bottles. She should feel embarrassed, she knew that, but the annoyance at her recruits rushed back instead and in all honesty, she couldn’t be bothered trying to find some corner of herself that would feel shame at the bottles of beer. After all, it was only four small bottles. And what looked to be a glass of half drunk scotch. Had she had scotch?
“You don’t get to judge me.”
“I’m not judging,” Sara said. “In fact, I would mind some myself.”
“Well go right ahead. Glasses are in the top cabinet.”
Sara went around the couch, to her kitchen while Alex tried to sit up and let the anger disperse. It didn’t make any sense that she felt so frustrated. Especially at Sara.  Sara had about as much choice in the matter of appearing here as Alex had of her being here. Alex tried to dig at the source of her anger, but fell short as Sara came to sit down beside her, setting two clean glasses on the table before she grabbed at the bottle of scotch.
“You know,” she began as she poured the drinks, “if it wasn’t for Ray cleaning up after us, the Waverider would be a constant mess of dirty dishes and empty bottles of beers. So don’t think I’m judging you on a bad day.”
“I’ve see your room,” Alex said, before taking the offered glass that had decent fill of whiskey. Taking a deeper sip than she should, she swallowed the hard liquor and saiid to her, “You’re spotless.”
“Your apartment is far from dirty. You have a small mess on a single coffee table."
“Sure,” Alex said as she drew another sip of the whiskey.
“Sure? Ouch. Last time I try to apologise jerk.” It was meant as a humours attempt, but it fell flat on Alex, only turning out to rub at her nerves even more.
“That wasn’t even an apology,” she said, “You just poured yourself some of my alcohol and made a comment to the effect that I probably cleaned.”
Sara paused, and then after taking a sip of her drink, gave a sardonic smile and said, “Sorry.” Despite the smile, Alex could see a change her expression, hurt and confusion probably, before it was taken up by the glass.
Alex downed her own drink, pouring another. The alcohol, amazingly, seemed to be having an affect on her so maybe she wasn’t asleep. Maybe this was just some drunken hallucination. Though if it was, it’d be a cause for worry.
“So…you going to talk about it?” Sara asked.
“About what?”
“What’s got you in a mood.”
Alex placed the glass onto the table harder than was needed. “Nothing has me in a mood. I just had a long day at work and I didn’t think I needed to explain that to you.”
“Just trying to make conversation.”
“Make it somewhere else.” Alex shook her head. She was not in the mood for it. “Go and wake up, Sara. I’m too tired for this and whatever games you want to play in my head, today.” She caught a glimpse of Sara’s face, reacting as if Alex had punched her in the gut before the dream melted and Alex found herself slipping awake.
Are you still there? Appeared on her screen, waiting for a response. Fumbling for the remote, she shut it off and turned over on the couch, falling back to sleep as she dreamt of somewhere else that was far, far away from Sara Lance.

Democratic Reps. Ro Khanna, from California, and Carolyn Maloney, from New York, sent a letter Wednesday to the House Judiciary Committee asking its members to address the issue.
Stealthing garnered national attention in April after Yale Law School graduate Alexandra Brodsky published an article on how online groups are perpetuating and encouraging the practice. Since then, it has become a difficult and divisive part of the legal discourse on how to classify acts that don't fit the textbook definitions of rape and sexual assault.
“Consent is not up for discussion, it is a requirement for the entirety of any sexual interaction. Stealthing violates an agreement between partners and is a dangerous form of sexual assault,” said Khanna. “The implications of the practice of nonconsensual condom removal are far-reaching with respect to the ongoing national conversation on the definition of consensual sex.”
The “disgraceful practice” can lead to unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, and can wreak psychological harm on victims, Khanna and Maloney wrote.
Mary Jacobs, who lives in Columbia, Mississippi, and asked her name be changed for this article, said that her partner stealthed her in August 2016. She now has a five-month-old baby boy.
“I feel so lost, violated, and disgusted because of what the baby's dad did to me. He did it without my permission, I didn't know until after we had sex that he committed the act of stealthing,” she told BuzzFeed News in an email. “I haven't told anyone about this and don't know how to move forward or go on.”
Their letter comes about six months after two lawmakers in Wisconsin and California introduced bills to change the definition of consent and rape to include tampering with a sexually protective device without telling the other person. California State Assembly member Cristina Garcia shelved her bill at the end of August because it lacked enough votes to advance, but she promised to “pursue it next year.”
“This has happened to me,” Garcia said. “People are having a hard time with this idea because they’re like, ‘The sex is consensual.’ It's about power and you think you have ownership of someone’s body and you don’t.”
“I am horrified that we even need to be having this conversation, that a sexual partner would violate their partner’s trust and consent like this. Stealthing is sexual assault,” said Rep. Maloney. “We need a hearing so that Congress can hear from the experts about how to best address this issue as we continue to amend our country’s and universities’ responses to sexual assault and rape.”
