We don't know what the caterpillar was smoking in his hookah, but in Victorian times, drugs such as opium and cocaine could be obtained legally from a pharmacist.⁣ ⁣ He didn't exhibit the standard signs of drug abuse though. He seemed a bit arrogant, almost to the point of being rude. His greeting to Alice was, "Who are you?" which the narrator says was not an encouraging opening for a conversation.⁣ ⁣ It was Alice who was acting like she was on drugs. She gave a nervous answer in which she said that she didn't know who she was. She's been confused even since entering Wonderland.🙃 She'd experienced a number of impossibilities, and she thought at one point that she may have been her friend Mabel, which made her sad because she'd have to live in Mabel's poky little house.⁣😢🏠 ⁣ The 1967 Jefferson Airplane song "White Rabbit," is about Carroll's characters and drugs. Songwriter Grace Slick speaks of effects such as Alice felt, with the line, "When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead." Slick was a user of the hallucinogenic LSD. She even planned to spike President Nixon's tea with it.🫖 ⁣ LSD wasn't around in 1865, but magic mushrooms were.🍄 ⁣ ⁣ In 1799, a type of agaric mushroom which produced effects more like Alice was experiencing was discovered in London, when a man known as J.S. picked mushrooms with his family for breakfast 🍄. ⁣ ⁣ Soon after eating them, they became disoriented. J.S. was found wandering the streets in a confused state. A doctor examined the whole family, and recorded that one child seemed to have been transported into another world, from which he would only return under duress to speak nonsense. ⁣ ⁣ In Carroll's book, the caterpillar advised Alice to eat the mushroom, telling her that one side would make her grow while the other would make her shrink. Another line from Slick's song is "Tell them a hookah-smoking caterpillar has given you the call."⁣ ⁣ But Alice's behavior almost certainly was not about drugs, and the caterpillar's advice was most likely just meant to suggest that she change with changing situations. ⁣ ⁣ In Carroll's defense, he made no mention of drugs in his extensive diaries. In fact, he didn't even smoke.
