"Man vs Food" Bases Loaded Big Unit.

One a the very few notable staples in downtown Phoenix, Alice Cooper's version of a sports bar and grill meets satan and rock 'n' roll is one hell of a Killer.

When we first got in, we were hosted by girls with dark mascara around the eyes, Alice style, as to say, Welcome to my Nightmare. We were then told we had to wait for our table for four, but they have this huge outdoor bar for you to lace and whiskey, so that was fine. 

From the inside, invited to take place among the crowd of cowboys and cowgirls - there was a rodeo at the US Airways Arena across the street about to start - and the panoramic string of flat TVs, we took notice of the trash, flush the fashion, love it to death menu of hearty meats and greasy billion dollar babies. We asked our waiter if he could hook us up with our Habs game that was being played in San Jose against the Sharks, but apparently even this big sportsbar owned by Alice Cooper and Randy Johnson (drafted by my Montréal Expos mind you) didn't have the network it was playing on. Instead, like in South Carolina a year ago, we had to endure some college basketball from schools we had never even heard of. What a brutal planet. Boohoo. 

Because I'm crazy, you're crazy, we're all crazy, we ordered a Man vs  Food Bases Loaded Big Unit to share four ways. It's a full pound 22 inch Vienna Beef hot dog on a baguette loaded with Nightmare Chili, bacon, cheese sauce, sauerkraut, jalapenos, diced tomatoes, diced onions, sweet relish and shredded cheese. WOW!! And when it comes flying out of the kitchen, the bell tolls in the premises, so you better raise your fist and yell "BIG UNIT!!". Now the Big Unit is baseball pitcher Randy Johnson's nickname, who was 6 feet 10 inches, so I mean, this is one hell of a dog. Was it good? I mean, at that point, it's just insanely too much food. I think there's just too much in there to really appreciated the subtleties, the nuances of each condiment. Less is more as they say.

We also ordered two "Great Ones" to share, which is the BBQ sampler named after number 99, Wayne Gretzky. I must say the brisket, hot link sausage and pulled pork were pretty darn good. The samplers came with a choice of two sides as well. We opted for baked beans, slaw, Nightmare Chili (also in Big Unit) and sliced apples. We figured we'd give our conscience a little easy action with the sliced apples, but little did we know that them apples would be 4 small pieces of green apple sealed in a plastic bag. Bye bye freshness and vitamines as they say. 

After all this protein, grease, cowboy attire and March Madness around us, we should've wondered that sooner or later the zipper catches the skin. Fortunately, school was now out in Dragontown. And we had learned yet another lesson. There IS too much of a good thing.
