Here's the thing about blaming mental health. Mentally ill people have been shown to be no more violent than the average population. But even if they were, Republicans routinely fight against free health care, which would allow mentally ill people to be treated. There are a variety of factors that have been linked to violence, such as growing up in impoverished and high-crime areas, but the GOP rarely wants to toss a coin toward mitigating these factors. Then there's the fact that just because someone was abused or grew up in an impoverished, high-crime area, doesn't mean they will commit crimes. The majority don't, which means that regardless of trauma, there is always choice involved.

All people have shit to deal with, but not all people kill people. We can't pinpoint a cause for why someone would do this, but we can control these people's access to guns.
