one specific thing i’m looking forward to once i get top surgery is going to get massages. there’s so many things that just don’t work for me because it involves taking your shirt off or getting your shoulders/back touched and i’m not comfortable with that cuz of the binder. but i want a real massage so bad

Thai Massage: the good, the bad, the ugly

When I got my itinerary for my week-long retreat in Chiang Mai, one of the items I was most excited about was the 2 hour traditional Thai Massage. I have had many massages in my life; Swedish, hot stone, deep tissue, aromatherapy, etc. None of these prepared me for the treatment I received during the Thai massage.
I really had no idea what I had gotten myself into. I didn't do any research prior and no one ever mentioned to me what a true Thai massage was like. When I walked into the spa room my therapist handed me a set of loose fitted clothing. I put on the outfit and proceeded to the massage room.
First of all, two hours is a long time to be massaged. Usually massages focus mainly on the back and then the legs, arms, and head get some attention toward the end. You just lay there and zone out while the therapist uses her hands to work out the tension in your muscles.
Thai massage is a totally interactive experience! Think full body massage crossed with partner yoga. In the start she had me lay face down while she worked on my feet and legs. She literally spread my legs apart and sat between them. She put her leg behind my knee and worked my leg back and forth. It wasn't very comfortable. In fact, it kind of hurt. She was so casual about our close personal contact, and I was just a little taken off my guard.
She did a lot of work with my back too, and the experience got even more involved. At one point she picked up both of my legs and forced me into a backbend. Ouch, I wasn't ready for that.
Then, she put me down and instructed me to grasp her arms. She sat on the back of my legs and pulled my arms behind me so my chest was lifted off the mat. Somehow (I really don't know how she managed this) she put her foot on my back and kept pulling my hands further and further behind me. This part actually felt REALLY good. As a yogi, I love a good back bend and I could hear the release in my joints with every pull.
After that she instructed me to flip over. She covered my eyes and then moved down toward my knees. Here she used her forearms to rub over the top of my quadriceps. She did this several times and then moved up to my hips. She found a pressure point here and held down for a long time. I could feel the blood pressure starting to throb and experienced a loss of sensation in my legs. It kind of hurt, but then she released and I could feel the rush of blood back into my legs. It was amazing!
Toward the end she did a lot more work with my legs and spine. At some points I was holding my breath waiting for that part to be over and other times I was able to relax. It was definitely not like any other massage I've ever received. After 2 hours, I was honestly glad for it to be over.
Per usual, when it was over, she braided my hair, told me I was beautiful, and gave me a kiss. Like I said before, I really loved that tiny (but mighty) little lady.
Later that day, I was so sore... but in a good way. It felt like I had a really intense yoga session and I already feel like I may be addicted. My friend in Surat told me there is a place right next to our condo complex that does Thai massages for only 400 baht, which is about $11. Lucky for me!
