“Kageyama, don’t let go!” Hinata clings desperately to Kageyama’s arm, his feet slipping beneath him. It’s almost funny how bad he is at this, especially after not long ago declaring that he would be “the best ice skater in the world”. Kageyama snorts.
“Hey! Don’t laugh, it’s not funny!” Hinata insists.
“You’re right,” Kageyama feigns guilt, placing his hand over his chest before smirking down at the middle blocker. “It’s hilarious.”
“Kageyama!” Hinata whines, his feet slipping even more over the ice. “Stop it! I’m going to-” With those words he drops, his grip lost on the setters arm. He reaches out in desperation, grabbing instead at Kageyama’s hands and pulling himself up. He let out a laugh of triumph, looking very proud of himself.
Kageyama could barely focus on that though.
Hinata Shouyou was holding his hands.
Sure, it wasn’t anything but for balance so as this wouldn’t be his last day on earth, but still. Hinata Shouyou was holding the hands of Kageyama Tobio and smiling up at him with that beautiful, radiant smile of his. Kageyama thought he might just die here and now.
“Hey, what’s up with you? Why is your face so red?” Hinata cocks his head to the side, still smiling innocently.
“I-It’s...” He searches his mind for an excuse, taking way too long. “Because of the cold?” His hands twitch nervously.
“The cold, ‘course.” Hinata’s eyes travel down to their hands, and travel back up to his face sheepishly. “You don’t mind this right? For balance?”
“For balance!” It came out too loud, too fast. Kageyama’s face starts burning brighter. “F-For balance, right…”
Hinata beams. “Good!” He begins to move, still as wobbly as before despite the new support. Kageyama couldn’t help but notice how adorable he looked (which wasn’t an uncommon occurrence for the setter.) Snowflakes were scattered in the orange mess of his hair; his eyes focused on his feet with intense precision; his tongue stuck out in concentration, every so often letting out yelps when his feet would slip. He was finding it hard to calm down, especially with his hands still locked with his own.
“Oh.. no… I think I’m going to fall again…”
“How have you still not got the hang of this? We’ve been here for like 20 minutes alr-”
“Kageyama!” Kageyama could do nothing but stare as the shorter boy’s hands slipped from his own and he dropped to the ice, his legs spreading wider and wider by the second until he was practically doing the splits.
“I…” Kageyama started, slightly dazed. “I never knew you were, uh… That flexible…”
“Neither did I.” Hinata smirked as he watched the setters face turn a progressively darker shade of red. “Something wrong, Kageyama?”
He couldn’t do anything more than shake his head. He worried that if he said anything now it’d just make the situation worse. He watched Hinata attempt to get up, his feet unable to find any grip. Kageyama found it astounding how inept the spiker was the minute he stepped foot on ice, any gracefulness or majesty lost.
Hinata stopped moving for a second, a small frown on his face. Kageyama felt a tug in his chest when he let out a breathy laugh, looking up at the setter with a weak smile. “Help me up, bakayama.”
Kageyama felt himself smile involuntarily as he reached out his hand. “You can’t call me that when you’re the one on the floor, dumbass.”
“Is this some sort of miracle? Are you smiling right now!?” Hinata laughed as he grabbed onto him, pulling himself up.
“Don’t laugh or you’ll just end up falling again!”
“I won’t!” Hinata insisted, seconds before slipping yet again, pulling the setter down with him this time.
“Oi! Dumbass, watch where you’re-” His words were cut short as soon as his gaze fell upon the middle blocker lay beneath him. Hinata stared up at him, eyes wide, mouth agape, his entire face flushed almost as bright as his hair. It didn’t matter that Kageyama was literally lay on top of a sheet of ice, he could feel every inch of his body heating up. Was he embarrassed? Flustered? Falling in love? Maybe. He couldn’t tell.
He didn’t move for a while. Neither of them did. They kept staring, unable to even utter a single word, faces glowing brighter every passing second. Kageyama swore that they stayed there for hours, days even. Though others could argue that they were only there for a few seconds, not that Kageyama would believe them.
“Are you two finished with your lovey dovey moment?” Tsukishima puffed, skating over with a snickering Yamaguchi holding onto his sleeve and gliding behind him. Kageyama almost called him a hypocrite. “Our skating time is over, morons.”
Kageyama scrambled up in a hurry, the embarrassment causing his feet to fail him. Hinata scurried out from beneath him as quick as he could, practically crawling in attempts to get away. Kageyama couldn’t help but feel slightly disappointed.
“Oi, king. Hurry it up, we don’t have all day.”
“I’m coming!” He barked, ignoring the slight frustrated ache in his chest as he skated back towards the exit.
---
The walk home was silent for once on the duo’s end. Kageyama watched the rest of their volleyball club, with Yamaguchi slipping on the powdered snow, Tsukishima to his side, prepared to catch him; with Noya and Tanaka preparing for a snowball fight with whatever scraps of snow they could find; with the third years in a row slightly ahead, Suga checking on everyone every few seconds. Everything was normal, as it should be. Everything but the unusual quietness of the middle blocker to his left. He coughed slightly, drawing his attention finally.
“Are…” Kageyama rubbed the back of his head awkwardly. “Are you mad at me?”
Hinata looked surprised, he regretted his words instantly. “No, of course not! Why?”
“When… at the ice rink, I fell on t-top of you.” He struggled with his words, his face heating up at the mention. He watched as a flash of colour blossomed on the shorter boy’s cheeks.
“I mean, that was my fault anyway.” His eyes dropped down to the floor bashfully as he muttered. “And it wasn’t all that bad…”
“It wasn’t bad?” Kageyama was sure he must’ve been hearing things.
“You looked… really cute. All shocked like that.” He tried to say it casually but the pigment of his face and the way he refused look him in the eye suggested otherwise.
“You- You too…”
The silence returned again, no longer heavy with tension. Kageyama could hear his heart pounding loud and clear in his ears. It shocked him that Hinata couldn’t hear it too. I... was cute?
They continued on their walk, their teammates leaving on their own respective ways home as they went until it was only Hinata and Kageyama left, the two attempting to sneak sly glances at each other (and failing miserably.)
“This is my road.” Kageyama finally speaks up.
“Oh, already?” Hinata seems disappointed, Kageyama glosses over it.
“Yeah…” He coughs, his face growing hot. “Today was fun, even if you can’t skate for shit.”
“Hey!” Hinata yells, his cheeks puffing in anger. Kageyama feels his heart swell at the sight. “But… I had fun too! Let’s do it again sometime, ok?” He grins, and Kageyama feels like he’s looking at the sun, shining at full brightness right in front of him.
“You got it. Hopefully you’ll be able to keep on your feet this time.”
“Kageyamaaa… That was supposed to be a nice moment.”
“Oh. Sorry.”
“It’s fine.” He smiles. “I wouldn’t expect anything less from you.”
It almost sounded like an insult, but Kageyama barely noticed it over the sound of his heartbeat. He lingered there for a few moments, not wanting to leave. He was thankful that Hinata took the initiative.
“Merry Christmas, Kageyama!” He smiled brightly, standing on his tiptoes to lightly kiss his cheek.
Kageyama slowly placed a hand on his cheek. He turned to him, only to find him running off in the opposite direction at full speed.
“Oi! Merry Christmas to you too!” His fingers glazed over where the shorters boys lips had been. It really is a merry christmas… Kageyama thought to himself, smiling softly.
