Trollhunters Fanfic Recommendations - Part 3
Somehow there is now a third one of these because I read far far too much fanfic and have no regrets about it. It’s with great pleasure I can also announce I’ve been digging around for Trans Jim fics and found some gems while I was at it that have been included below.
You can find Part 1 of my fanfic recommendations here!
And Part 2 here!
Plus one shameless plug for my own current fics.
General Trollhunters
(And you're my Arcadia.) - All you need to know is it’s Jilaire post Season 3 and one line in particular made me burst out laughing.
Bitter[sweet] - Sometimes the thing you need most is just a really good friend when your body plain sucks. Contains Trans Jim and is delightful.
the red book - Far beyond the humble days of Season 3 and after living beyond his human family and friends, Jim has started to forget who he was and that he was ever just a human kid.
The Halls of Arcadia High - When Strickler disappeared in Season 1, his absence was felt in many ways even in the form of a humble piano left un-played.
Not - Not!Enrique isn’t his name yet it’s what they call him anyway. An albatross reminding him of what was taken before he even had a chance to start.
On the Radio  - The final telling of the Janus Order.
Gay stories for Tales of Arcadia - Yeah I’m pretty sure you can guess where this is going, LGBTQ+ rep!
Through the Fires - There was a before time, one where Gunmar still roamed free and Deya had yet to be chosen let alone felled. These are the words of the humble witnesses of that war, from the changelings to the trolls who would oppose them.
Trollhunters: A Series of Disjointed Drabbles - This is so cute and fluffy I might just spontaneously combust.
Insomnolence - It is after the final battle and Jim has a lot of thoughts.
another tragedy - Anxiety is a bastard, it gives a lot of bad thoughts but sometimes there is a little bit of truth buried beneath it all and it whispers all about how you can keeping doing the wrong things for the right reasons. Season 2.
i will always hold you close (but i will learn to let you go) - Sometimes the hardest thing you can do is learning when to let go. Sometimes however, even when you want to they hold back even tighter. Season 2.
your eyes look like coming home - Toby has been the witness from the start of just how close Jim has been to death multiple times over and how Jim he is about the whole thing. It scares him how this time might be it, again and again. Season 2.
The Collected Tellings of Shigir and Other Changeling Folktales - I don’t actually know which category to put this under so I’m going the to heck with it route instead. Does exactly what it says on the tin for your Changeling lore needs, some of which will be off-hand mentioned or outright appear during the fantastic Terpsichore - The Comedy of the Danse Macabre - ACT I.
Please note: The main fic is Stricklake if that’s not your cup of tea, the folktales however can be enjoyed regardless.
~~~
Stricklake
all that dazzling dawn has put asunder - The sequel to in my sleep i dreamed of waking, this is filled with delightful fluff, internal panicking and the joys of trying to explain how you’re a not and how that does not change the fact Strickler is still a was. Being a changeling in these strange after times are difficult even before the other baggage involved but at least you're still here to start.
Two Pisces in Alto Mare - When in Rome as part of a study trip abroad, you meet the most curious people sometimes and  by fluke or nature you may even do so more than once.
Filling The Gaps - Possibly a bit of an unusual mention but! These are little pieces of Fallout that were going on while our eyes were following elsewhere and boy it can hurt.
Rehearsals and DvD Bonus Features - Another from the home of Terpsichore - The Comedy of the Danse Macabre - ACT I which is being listed here because it does have Stricklake in it. Some things don’t make the cut with writing fanfic, either because the plot wandered off, it doesn’t fit right or it’s some backstory you haven’t quite figured out where it can be naturally brought up yet and in this case they’ve found themselves a home. Be warned, one particular chapter is explicit and has been marked as such in warnings in the chapter summary.
~~~
Alternate Universes
(Un)Becoming - Not technically an AU in the conventional sense but I’m putting it under here anyway. It’s Unbecoming, as ever the road to hell is paved with good intentions but as Jim threw in the towel the storm that’s coming will not be stopped. However, what if others caught glimpses of a world that still had a human Trollhunter to defend it?
Steve the Kind - Steve became the Trollhunter but how the adventure unfolds differently than when Jim was at the helm might just surprise you. Very slow burn Steve and Jim that in a rather refreshing change doesn’t throw Claire under the bus for it to happen. Praise be.
31 Days in the Darklands - Strickmar that somehow kinda works?? It helps with Gunmar having the space to breathe outside of getting Morgana out and be more of his own character. Storywise, in order to rescue Jim from the Darklands Strickler broke a deal that would cost his own freedom and now has to somehow maintain a treaty between three very different factions all the while keeping his own neck intact. The intense distrust in changelings continues on to boot but hey, nobody said politics was easy.
Building Bridges - So Gunmar is distinctly of the more Eldritch variety with dream powers, the ability to easily see through lies for the true emotions and thoughts, Bular has the Insight as well to a lesser extent and everyone has somehow managed to hop onto Stricklander’s bandwagon of we must protect Jim Lake Jr. at all costs. Now the race is on as both sides try to sway the young Trollhunter to their way of thinking and the Trollmarket has no idea how dangerously badly they’re doing so far.
Lost Souls - A fic written in variable snapshots. Jim was kidnapped and changed by Merlin far earlier to be his Champion to ensure he did the “right thing” while Barbara in desperation to find her son falls into the hands of Morgana thus mother and son become enemies without even realising it.
Faithfully - Barbara died overseas and yet somehow Jim still managed to make his way back to Arcadia to become the next Trollhunter. This road is far harder for it as a seemingly homeless orphan though on the flipside he keeps on acquiring dads. Contains Trans Jim, timeline variable snapshots and I love it very much.
The Burning - There was a fire, it killed Barbara and Jim was thought dead as well. Nobody could have guessed the feral half changeling that is running around like a cryptid is the very much alive Jim.
Finding Daylight - Jim is a very low ranking changeling, terrified of Bular and his home amounts to little more than a spot in the woods. Things started to go pear shaped for him when he accidentally stumbled over Blinky and only more so when the amulet picks him after Kanjigar is felled. Tis not a kind world for a changeling child out there and he has nobody really to help watch his back until he stumbles on a potential maybe.
~~~
The bonus shoutout for an excellent MSA fic
A Sleep Like Death - Who wouldn’t want to go visit a tower you’ve inherited apparently and has haunted as all hell all over it? Not Vivi that’s for sure. Poor Arthur is just along for the ride and then things start to get really weird when they find it’s still occupied and thinks Arthur is his jailor.
Tar as Bitumen are artificially made many nations selling to nations which has not mastered that technology yet like USA selling using their big ships, to make such u take garbage as taka mixed with sewer water and place cabbage inside as same with internet servers or Pay-TV as well u can place the stick like africa broom inside 4 better results. Minneapolis, MN, has dug roads that destroyed the world but they see it as a tourist attraction to the twin cities, which can be 1 reason why USA lands are sinking as many nations are tricked into making the same wanting to destroy the earth. Either to be removed or other nations uses escalator technology on busy roads kids cross as elevate them long b4 reaching the point as Kellog Dr of Wichita, ks, where escalators can be placed to aid people cross but let it not be too high as can be 2 meters of the ground. Let it be 4 people not cars instead of placing high fly over which those who have varicose vain cant climb not as the lame and the aged, making city ugly but they fathom not that. Or increase twice the traffic lights changing time like from 1 minute to 2 to make just people wait and cross dude. as in the link below, can have automated pumps to pump water out during rainy season as with your house with tank using units pre-paid water bill as the tap itself got switch that open up the motor pumping the same water from the storage tank to maintain pressure, 4 incase u buy water on truck, dont have piped water as ya house can be far from the city or u fear 4 ya life as ya water supply being poisoned
Kisumu should be removed dude as should be a small city not large as the land was a forest a long time as can seen at the port, which if spreads can make the lake rise to over-flood local lands.
Bottle top placed in the above makes even cements, electric poles and any known concrete structure.
With the saucer as in the link below u place cut diagonal photos into the above solution mixed with yellow egg albumen as well as mixed all fruit juices and cement or wild cat/dog family made cement or feces and boom ya saucer dude like google images of Nasa saucer jets
Kenya cane, mnazi water as coconut inside water and even grinned the white part then extract the juice b4 u place hay, rice or wheat, groundnut husk then do the boom process and ya liquor bro.
Even freshly gotten from the firm white maize makes flakes b4 fellow food colors added dude as well makes spaghetti as much as cooked wheat as mawele then grinned and the above done to give spaghetti of different shapes. With the above u can add maize cob or sugar cane inner part in the boom process and it forms.
When u eat in table as family aint good, just eat at ya own pace maybe outside or in the kitchen or on living room all alone, don’t do it as it gives u some spirit of being 1st as many long 4 the same and died b4 getting such thus spirit to those who knows not thereby lowering the surrounding lands as synonymous with Nigeria or USA which many think is good idea as can create more wheat land and on the other side fear 4 some lands which can grow wheat to surpass them in production like with Georgia state, grass becoming brown so people thinks the same and with East Africa they really want what they fear with Georgia as lands near lakes, those lakes can capsize and water fills the land as with Chicago or Great lake city regions as well as with Lake Victoria, those of Uganda and Tanzania. Same applies to Manhattan island as was artificially made as described below, yet its a center of worship of many angering God, Kinda, which makes the land falls as above if we did not know and many huge vices u do, we know not bro, we cab build such many to elevate the same sad happening as above and like Charging Students from poor families like thrice what u charge ya own Children yet their spheres poor than yours and maybe the green-card vices as we know like still paying like embassy fee and not directing folks to get to shelter if they know no 1 selling such their opportunities to rich kids who got as well opportunity still in their motherland as opposed to the former case. When 1 tells ya how to make car and gadgets, no point 4 him to suffer, those car and electronic companies emerging after innoson, credit his a/c as attribute dude, inculcating spirit of being thin when u pass such their machines as being sold, so WSU has played much dice, so we wanna see if the Kenya tribe still wants to play the same with the above as playing at bank point, get to the counter or sd, service desk
When u look at their food, a spirit they have inculcated gets into ya as talks badly, where Mr Hindu likes became 1st to indict ya of such above. Stop getting into what 1 thinks provided not broken the law or ambush ya, we are free to think such dude.
When u see 1 without ears, kinda, from a glance or their ears appear tiny and small, then it means they are infected with HIV virus but not on medication yet.
You who are grown up, question is, what have u come up with that save humanity, not wanting to be near what is made, if its women even at 10 or 15 u got the right to own them dude. Show me what u got takes the day as far as innovation is concerned bro as in the link below
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=show+me+what+u+got+jay+z
Armored glass made with cut flower where inside the solution rice husks as well as wheat added or maize cob then u do the boom process with milk then ya armored glass while if u spit saliva ya normal glass, if u mix the technology above solution with the 1 of making siren gas or any, gives u that gas well inscribed in that cylinder where u can use the same to make saucer jets or planes or automobiles. As with saucer jets we can employ the American football shape technology to run on both side when getting up or down with to carry many people we use wall unit of school technology, where u only got off such when wanting to shower as water gotten from atmosphere or when eating in set groups as u alternate as in the link below
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&sxsrf=ALeKk00f63f8lIOKiETr7uZLX9Ei_pMroQ%3A1596005717357&ei=VR0hX5KtFaGHjLsPotW9-AI&q=american+foot+ball+images&oq=american+foot+ball+images&gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQAzIECAAQDTIECAAQDTIGCAAQDRAeMgYIABANEB4yBggAEA0QHjIGCAAQDRAeMgYIABANEB4yBggAEA0QHjIICAAQDRAFEB4yCAgAEA0QBRAeOgQIABBHOggIABAHEAoQHjoHCAAQDRCLA1DQJVj_NGDhPmgAcAF4AIABswKIAeAQkgEFMi04LjGYAQCgAQGqAQdnd3Mtd2l6uAECwAEB&sclient=psy-ab&ved=0ahUKEwjSq97O8PHqAhWhA2MBHaJqDy8Q4dUDCAs&uact=5
Real mirror can be made using peanut butter solution where pieces are added or cow brown hide, wheat, groundnut outer peel or rice husk b4 urinating unto it like 1 found at Sumner county jail in Wichita, KS.
https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ALeKk00mpzNsEHKi0RP9w4OKaRVfVQrvdw:1596005836661&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=images+of+sumner+jail+in+kansas&client=firefox-b-d&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwitmNCH8fHqAhX_BGMBHYWDCDsQsAR6BAgKEAE&biw=1280&bih=910
Even used cane bottles when placed in the solutions as below makes different shape styles of jets and when mixed with much water makes auto-mobiles bro
The most basic idea of strategy is the application of strength against weakness. Or, if you prefer, strength applied to the most promising opportunity.
--
Yet this whole midlevel framework misses two huge, incredibly important natural sources of strength: Having a coherent strategy—one that coordinates policies and actions. A good strategy doesn’t just draw on existing strength; it creates strength through the coherence of its design. Most organizations of any size don’t do this. Rather, they pursue multiple objectives that are unconnected with one another or, worse, that conflict with one another.
--
The creation of new strengths through subtle shifts in viewpoint. An insightful reframing of a competitive situation can create whole new patterns of advantage and weakness.
--
Half of what alert participants learn in a strategy exercise is to consider the competition even when no one tells you to do it in advance.
--
Whenever an organization succeeds greatly, there is also, at the same time, either blocked or failed competition. Sometimes competition is blocked because an innovator holds a patent or some other legal claim to a temporary monopoly. But there may also be a natural reason imitation is difficult or very costly. Wal-Mart’s advantage must stem from something that competitors cannot easily copy, or do not copy because of inertia and incompetence.
--
The oft-forgotten cost of decentralization is lost coordination across units. Stores that do not choose the same vendors or negotiate the same terms cannot benefit from an integrated network of data and transport. Stores that do not share detailed information about what works and what does not cannot benefit from one another’s learning.
--
Tradition saw discounting as tied to urban densities, whereas Sam Walton saw a way to build efficiency by embedding each store in a network of computing and logistics. Today we call this supply-chain management, but in 1984 it was as an unexpected shift in viewpoint. And it had the impact of David’s slung stone.
--
To detect a bad strategy, look for one or more of its four major hallmarks:
Fluff.
Fluff is a form of gibberish masquerading as strategic concepts or arguments. It uses “Sunday” words (words that are inflated and unnecessarily abstruse) and apparently esoteric concepts to create the illusion of high-level thinking.
Failure to face the challenge.
Bad strategy fails to recognize or define the challenge. When you cannot define the challenge, you cannot evaluate a strategy or improve it.
Mistaking goals for strategy.
Many bad strategies are just statements of desire rather than plans for overcoming obstacles.
Bad strategic objectives.
A strategic objective is set by a leader as a means to an end. Strategic objectives are “bad” when they fail to address critical issues or when they are impracticable.
--
Describing a destination is no substitute for developing a comprehensive roadmap for how the country will achieve its stated goals.
--
“All too much of what is put forward as strategy is not. The basic problem is confusion between strategy and strategic goals.” With regard to the recent editions of the national security strategy, it said “when you look closely at either the 2002 or 2006 documents, all you find are lists of goals and sub-goals, not strategies.”
--
Fluff is superficial restatement of the obvious combined with a generous sprinkling of buzzwords.
Fluff masquerades as expertise, thought, and analysis. As a simple example of fluff in strategy work, here is a quote from a major retail bank’s internal strategy memoranda: “Our fundamental strategy is one of customer-centric intermediation.” The Sunday word “intermediation” means that the company accepts deposits and then lends them to others. In other words, it is a bank. The buzz phrase “customer-centric” could mean that the bank competes by offering depositors and lenders better terms or better service. But an examination of its policies and products does not reveal any distinction in this regard. The phrase “customer-centric intermediation” is pure fluff. Pull off the fluffy covering and you have the superficial statement “Our bank’s fundamental strategy is being a bank.”
--
A strategy is a way through a difficulty, an approach to overcoming an obstacle, a response to a challenge. If the challenge is not defined, it is difficult or impossible to assess the quality of the strategy. And if you cannot assess a strategy’s quality, you cannot reject a bad strategy or improve a good one.
--
If you fail to identify and analyze the obstacles, you don’t have a strategy. Instead, you have either a stretch goal, a budget, or a list of things you wish would happen.
--
“This 20/20 plan is a very aggressive financial goal,” I said. “What has to happen for it to be realized?” Logan tapped the plan with a blunt forefinger. “The thing I learned as a football player is that winning requires strength and skill, but more than anything it requires the will to win—the drive to succeed. The managers and staff in this company have worked hard, and the transition to digital technologies was handled well. But there is a difference between working hard and having your eye on the prize and the will to win. Sure, 20/20 is a stretch, but the secret of success is setting your sights high. We are going to get moving and keep pushing until we get there.”
--
“This is what Jack Welch says,” he told me. The text read: “We have found that by reaching for what appears to be the impossible, we often actually do the impossible.” “That’s what we are going to do here,” said Logan.
--
What I would advise is that you first work to discover the very most promising opportunities for the business. Those opportunities may be internal, fixing bottlenecks and constraints in the way people work, or external. To do this, you should probably pull together a small team of people and take a month to do a review of who your buyers are, who you compete with, and what opportunities exist.
--
Chad Logan thanked me and, a week later, retained someone else to help him. The new consultant took Logan and his department managers through an exercise he called “Visioning.” The gist of it was the question “How big do you think this company can be?” In the morning they stretched their aspirations from “bigger” to “very much bigger.” Then, in the afternoon, the facilitator challenged them to an even grander vision: “Think twice as big as that,” he pressed. Logan was pleased. I was pleased to be elsewhere engaged.
--
Effective senior leaders don’t chase arbitrary goals.
Rather, they decide which general goals should be pursued.
And they design the subgoals that various pieces of the organization work toward.
Indeed, the cutting edge of any strategy is the set of strategic objectives (subgoals) it lays out. One of the challenges of being a leader is mastering this shift from having others define your goals to being the architect of the organization’s purposes and objectives.
--
To help clarify this distinction it is helpful to use the word “goal” to express overall values and desires and to use the word “objective” to denote specific operational targets. Thus, the United States may have “goals” of freedom, justice, peace, security, and happiness. It is strategy which transforms these vague overall goals into a coherent set of actionable objectives—defeat the Taliban and rebuild a decaying infrastructure.
--
A leader’s most important job is creating and constantly adjusting this strategic bridge between goals and objectives.
--
These sorts of broad “goals” work like the rules of football in that they rule out a great many actions without specifying what the team should actually do.
--
A long list of “things to do,” often mislabeled as “strategies” or “objectives,” is not a strategy. It is just a list of things to do.
Such lists usually grow out of planning meetings in which a wide variety of stakeholders make suggestions as to things they would like to see done. Rather than focus on a few important items, the group sweeps the whole day’s collection into the “strategic plan.” Then, in recognition that it is a dog’s dinner, the label “long-term” is added so that none of them need be done today.
--
A high rate of community involvement might be a very desirable state of affairs. But it is hardly a strategy. It is a blue-sky objective.
--
The kernel of a strategy contains three elements:
A diagnosis that defines or explains the nature of the challenge. A good diagnosis simplifies the often overwhelming complexity of reality by identifying certain aspects of the situation as critical.
A guiding policy for dealing with the challenge. This is an overall approach chosen to cope with or overcome the obstacles identified in the diagnosis.
A set of coherent actions that are designed to carry out the guiding policy. These are steps that are coordinated with one another to work together in accomplishing the guiding policy.
--
In business, the challenge is usually dealing with change and competition. The first step toward effective strategy is diagnosing the specific structure of the challenge rather than simply naming performance goals. The second step is choosing an overall guiding policy for dealing with the situation that builds on or creates some type of leverage or advantage. The third step is the design of a configuration of actions and resource allocations that implement the chosen guiding policy.
--
A great deal of strategy work is trying to figure out what is going on. Not just deciding what to do, but the more fundamental problem of comprehending the situation.
--
Jen-Hsun Huang reformulated the company’s strategy. Key inputs came from a temporary technical advisory board made up of both insiders and expert outsiders.
--
A new strategy is, in the language of science, a hypothesis, and its implementation is an experiment. As results appear, good leaders learn more about what does and doesn’t work and adjust their strategies accordingly.
--
... in business, where an executive can choose an action based on gut feel and, even a year later, no one will know whether it was a good choice.
--
In the same way, a good business strategy deals with the edge between the known and the unknown. Again, it is competition with others that pushes us to edges of knowledge. Only there are found the opportunities to keep ahead of rivals.
--
Given that we are working on the edge, asking for a strategy that is guaranteed to work is like asking a scientist for a hypothesis that is guaranteed to be true—it is a dumb request.
It was 1890, and there was a cocktail party here in Pittsburgh. All the movers and shakers were there, including Carnegie. He held court in a corner of the room, smoking a cigar.
He was introduced to Frederick Taylor, the man who was becoming famous as an expert on organizing work.
“Young man,” said Carnegie, squinting dubiously at the consultant, “if you can tell me something about management that is worth hearing, I will send you a check for ten thousand dollars.”
Now, ten thousand dollars was a great deal of money in 1890. Conversation stopped as the people nearby turned to hear what Taylor would say.
“Mr. Carnegie,” Taylor said, “I would advise you to make a list of the ten most important things you can do. And then, start doing number one.”
And, the story goes, a week later Taylor received a check for ten thousand dollars.
--
Taylor’s assignment was to think through the intersection between what was important and what was actionable. Carnegie paid because Taylor’s list-making exercise forced him to reflect upon his more fundamental purposes and, in turn, to devise ways of advancing them.
The problem is that there might be better ideas out there, just beyond the edge of our vision. But we accept early closure because letting go of a judgment is painful and disconcerting. To search for a new insight, one would have to put aside the comfort of being oriented and once again cast around in choppy waters for a new source of stability. There is the fear of coming up empty-handed. Plus, it is unnatural, even painful, to question our own ideas.
Thus, when we do come up with an idea, we tend to spend most of our effort justifying it rather than questioning it. That seems to be human nature,
--
The creation of new higher-quality alternatives requires that one try hard to “destroy” any existing alternatives, exposing their fault lines and internal contradictions. I call this discipline create-destroy. Trying to destroy your own ideas is not easy or pleasant. It takes mental toughness to pick apart one’s own insights. In my own case, I rely on outside help—I invoke a virtual panel of experts that I carry around in my mind.
--
Social herding presses us to think that everything is OK (or not OK) because everyone else is saying so. The inside view presses us to ignore the lessons of other times and other places, believing that our company, our nation, our new venture, or our era is different. It is important to push back against these biases. You can do this by paying attention to real-world data that refutes the echo-chamber chanting of the crowd—and by learning the lessons taught by history and by other people in other places.
When Chasing Love (NSFW 18+)
A/N: Hiii, this is like my first ever Stuart fic. I’ve technically done one with the Hoes a while back but this is my first individual one. The title of this was based off a poem by Michael Faudet that is the bases for this fic. I want to thank @writing-obrien as usual for being my biggest motivator and helper, but I’m also going to thank her for any future help she will undoubtly lend me. This is really different than I’ve written before, but it was the best way I could think to give a good perspective from all sides instead of one. I also wanted to try this style of writing out, because I do plan on writing a Styida fic at some point. I hope you guys like this and thank you all for being wonderfully beautiful people.
When chasing love — at any cost —
The pathways meet — but seldom cross.
I dream of dream —
Once dreamt, now lost.
How sunshine steals From autumn frost.
  –Michael Faudet
Stuart walked into the building already hating everything about it. He'd had a relatively good night's sleep, made himself a breakfast that wasn't cereal, and was wearing his favourite beanie. But something about the pretentious white colour of the walls, rubbed him the wrong way. He walked down the corridor until it opened up to the jungle of cubicles that he called work. There were already syncopated chatters of keyboards and phones ringing in an offbeat melody, that had his nerves on edge.
He turned down the aisle that his desk was at and threw his satchel on the ground before slouching in his chair. He added to the musical diapason with his own clicks of his keyboard as he logged into his computer. As he leisurely checked his email, he heard it. The sound he dreaded to hear every morning when she walked in. Her vexatious heels clacked against the tile floors as she greeted everyone she passed. What was most irritating for him was that she didn't even know the people she said hi to. She did it out of the “kindness” of her heart. Just that thought alone made him rolls his eyes. No one was that nice on purpose. Someone that nice always had a hidden agenda.
You see, Stuart’s iQ was off the charts. He was a borderline genius. Yet he found himself in this rinky dink office with people that may as well be pumping gas. But what other choice did Stuart have? He'd been denied for his applications for interning and entry level positions to some of the world best technology institutions. The one he wanted most being Google. So, he'd have to wait another year to apply and until then he was forced to work any job he could get.
“Morning I.T.” She peeked her head into our row, wiggling her fingers in our direction.
Every guy in the row paid her their full attention, chiming hello back almost in unison. All except Stuart who ignored her existence all together.
“You boys working hard?” She said so sickly sweet, Stuart was sure he’d become a diabetic.
“Always!” Jerry piped up, his cheeks reddening and his voice an octave higher than usual.
She smiled, the kind of smile that showed all her teeth. Stuart glanced up out of his peripheral catching sight of it. He couldn't deny that she was easy on the eyes. She had beautiful legs, which she must have known because she wore pencil skirts or tight dresses everyday. Her hair was long and silky, framing her face as if it was only meant to do just that. Her ass was pretty nice too. But that smile, you'd regret taking a look if you hadn't.
“Well, keep up the hard work boys!” She sang turning to walk away.
“Oh, and good morning Stu.”
She did this every single morning. He wasn't sure what made her think it was a good idea, but she'd started calling him that his second day in. Even though he'd explained to her countless times he didn't like anyone calling him that. But, she ignored the only request he ever made of her and continued to call him that anyways.
Stuart turned his head to say something snarky, when someone called her name grabbing her attention away from him. She smiled differently than she had earlier. It was wider, making her eyes almost squint up a little.
“Hi.” She sang, a fakeness to the word.
It was that. That right there that made him hate her. Everyone liked her, but she was faker than a barbie. He turned back around in his chair shaking his head and starting his annoyingly boring day, like he did everyday.
“I also just want to remind everyone that tonight is our annual company banquet. It is not mandatory you come, but must show up.”
Stuart scoffed at his boss, pulling out his phone a flicking through it. Saying that it wasn't mandatory means we didn't have to show up, but his boss loved to make a good impression with the higher ups. So if you didn’t show up than you were the red headed step child for at least a month. So definitely against his will, Stuart would be going to his stupid company party.
“Don't worry, Bro. After party at my place.” Stuart’s friend Curtis whispered.
Stuart's lips quirked up, but he didn't look away from his phone. His friends and coworkers had come to know that this was his way of responding. Nothing was more important than his phone.
“Oh, Chloe.” Stuart's boss chimed, an obnoxious smile on his face.
And there she was again, hovering like a nat. She smiled a heart stopping smile, before waving him on to continue his speech. She listening as if she was actually interested but Stuart guessed that she probably wasn't. She was doing her due diligence and paying “close” attention, when in reality she couldn't care less. She peeked down at him from where she was standing, he didn't notice and even if he had he wouldn't have cared. She could just barely make out what was on his screen, from what Chloe could see he was scrolling through instagram.
Chloe cleared her throat, catching Stuart's boss’s attention. “Sorry to interrupt Lyle, but I'm pretty sure Stuart here would love to help out with cleaning up at the banquet tonight.”
There was an eerie silence that fell over the group of guys, all staring expectantly at Stuart who continued to scroll through his phone.
“Right Stuart?” She hummed sweetly.
Stuart replied with a grunt, earning a smile from Chloe. Honestly, there was no one in the world that she couldn't stand more than Stuart. He thought he was better than everyone else, he was lazy, and he always looked like he'd rather be anywhere but in the office constantly.
“A-awesome.” Lyle replied, eyeing Stuart skeptically waiting for him to pipe up and refuse to help. But he didn't Stuart didn't say anything. Chloe beamed as she flipped her hair over her shoulder and walked away, her heels clacking with her.
“Dude…” Curtis nudged his friend.
Stuart looked up thoroughly annoyed. His brows were furrowed and his face was the very definition of ‘WTF?’ The rest of the I.T. guys went back to work, while Curtis explained to Stuart what just happened.
“That bitch.” He spat, ripping his glasses from his face to massage the bridge of his nose.
“Dude, you gotta look up at the world sometimes. You're missing out.”
Stuart wasn't listening to his friend's words of wisdom, he was beyond angry at the girl he already didn't like but was sure at this point he hated. He would get her back for this if it was the last thing he did.
Stuart still hadn't decide his plot for revenge as he walked into the large dining hall. Maybe if this were his first annual banquet, he might be dazzled by the low fancy light and the expensive looking decoration. But it wasn't his first banquet and he wasn't easily impressed.
He eyed a waiter walking around holding a tray of champagne and Stuart decide that if he had to be here all night, he'd earned the right to be a little tipsy. He'd downed his third glass, when he finally found the table with his name card on it. He felt good now, a little less uptight than normal. There were already other guest seated, but Stuart knew none of them. He, unlike some people, didn't waste his time trying to learn the names of every person he worked with. Stuart pulled out his phone, wanting to look at anything but the drag that was this party.
“Oh Chloe, darling!” A blonde lady sitting directly across from Stuart, chirped.
Stuart's blooded instantly boiled at her name and before he knew it she plopped down next to him, sipping a half empty glass of champagne. She ignored him, acting if the seat next to her were empty as she socialised with guest around the table. He tried his best to ignore her, but she was right there.
She was wearing a small sparkly black dress, with a huge cut out in the back. Her hair was looped in perfect curls that strewn down her back. He glanced up at her for the briefest of moments, watching the way she moved. She was working the table, asking about this couple’s kids, and that girl’s college basketball team. She nodded her head when necessary and hummed when needed. But Stuart suspect that she's didn't care about any of it.  She never lent her own stories to the conversation, just let people go on about theirs. It was stalley impressive, but when someone asked Stuart a question and she rolled her eyes and knocked back her fourth(or fifth he wasn't sure) drink. He hated her all over again.
“So, what do you do?” The same blonde lady from earlier asked. Stuart clicked his phone off and sat up a little straighter in his seat. His throat felt dry at the thought of responding to the women.
“Yeah Stu. Why don't you enlighten us on your enticing job.” Chloe gushed sarcastically.
She looked over at me, her hair bouncing behind her. Just as Stuart opened his mouth to reply, a spoon clinking against the side of a glass resounded throughout the room. A formally dressed man stood at the front of the room with a microphone in his hand. He was the President of the company, Mr. Chetty. He looked tentatively round the collective members of the banquet guests, before beginning the same monologue he recited every year.
Chloe’s mouth snapped shut and she flicked her hair around, leaning back slightly as she paid attention and Stuart’s jaw clenched. He had a full view of the cut out of her dress from this angle, but he wouldn't let that distract him. He pushed her chair away from him slightly. It scraped lightly against the floor, but no one paid the sound any heed. Her body stiffened as she jerked forwards. She threw a venomous look of her shoulder before placing her perfectly painted nails around the base of her chair and scooting it backwards, further than necessary, even closer to him and his nostrils flared.
He pushed her chair again, harsher, catching a few people's attention. Their eyes flicked to him attached with strange looks as the chair ground along the floor, but still the speech resumed. Stuart swallowed thickly and ducked his head, avoiding all eyes. Once again, she jumped backwards, so far backwards that he could see the natural highlights in her hair and smell her perfume. It was a nice one, floraly with a hint of vanilla. He loathed to admit how delicious she smelled.
Taking a different approach, he leaned forward. His hand landed on her thigh to direct her attention and his chin almost resting on her shoulder. “You’re almost sitting on my goddamn lap, doll, any further and you will be.”
His words were toxic as he tried to impregnate them with all the hatred he had for her.
“Don’t act like you wouldn’t just love for me to be sitting there instead of this chair, Stewie.” She bit back and it was the hiss in her voice that startled him, her usual calm and friendly tone gone.
The speech ended at that moment, the room igniting with applauds. Stuart was grateful for the interruption because he was practically choking on his saliva. His hand, though, was still gripping her thigh. He cleared his throat, trying to reinstate his confidence as noisy chatter around the pair began, covering his action. She turned in her seat, facing back to the conversation of the table and returning to ignoring him entirely. The fact that his hand slid up her thigh completely unfazed her. She picked up her conversation with the blonde across the table as if everything was normal.
That got under his skin.
That bugged him.
He may ignore the world but he didn’t like to be ignored, especially not by her. He growled lowly beneath his breath, his hand squeezing her thigh but she didn’t even flinch in her words. Her fingers wrapping around his wrist casually and attempting to pry his hand from her thigh. But she failed, and he smirked.
Her eyes finally moved to him, a grin on her face that she gave everyone, a fake smile and he raised an eyebrow at her cockily. “Problem, Chloe? You look a little flushed.”
“No problem at all Stewie. I'm just trying to placate the child next to me.”
Stuart leaned back in his chair to see the person next to her only to find an elderly woman shakily drinking her tea. He looked back to Chloe, a frown on his face. Her smiled widened, like she knew she was getting to him. Even though, no one got to Stuart. He couldn't, nay, wouldn't let her win. Stuart was, if anything, competitive.
“So, young man,” the blonde woman said grabbing his attention. “What did you say you do again?”
Stuart smirked at the woman, pushing his glasses further up his nose. As he began explaining to her, his hand travel further up Chloe's thigh. She whipped her head to look at him, her eyes widening and her hand squeezing his wrist for him to stop. His other hand rested on his chin as he intently listen to the blonde woman, who's name was Nancy. He skillfully avoided Chloe's eyes as his hand, despite her grip, grazed the lace of her panties. She jerked, gasping, and trying to cover it up as a cough.
“And you and, Stuart here, work at the same building?” Nancy asked, taking a sip of her wine.
Chloe smiled weakly, Stuart was already rubbing small circles into the fabric of her panties just over her clit. He was totally at ease, his smirk still clad in his face as picked up his pace.
“Uh, yes.” Chloe answered, clearing her throat first.
“Do you two work closely together?”
Stuart smiled, upping the ante by pushing her panties to the side and sliding a finger through her folds. She pursed her lips, taking a deep breath before finally answering the woman.
“Very closely.”
Stuart never faltered, keeping up conversations better than he ever had in his life. Chloe could barely follow the discussion, her mind too focused on the way his fingers were plunging into her. They were long and perfectly nimble, closing in on her climax. She poked at her food with her fork, trying to play it cool. His thumb made contact with her clit, roughly moving in circular patterns. She clutched the fork tighter, squeezing her eyes and biting her bottom lip to stifle the sounds that seemed imminent.
“Come on, Chloe.” Stuart whispered lowly, leaning over subtly. “Just come for me.”
Chloe clenched around him, his tone and his words coaxing her but she was determined to hold out on him. She was controlling the situation the only way she knew how. Stuart caught on quickly and smirked, he loved a challenge. He scooted a little closer to her so their chair were touching. She looked up at him, still chewing on her lip. He quirked up an eyebrow, challengingly before curling his finger faultlessly inside her hitting the perfect spot.
She sighed softly, her eyes rolling back. She gripped his arm, leaned into him for support, no longer able to do so herself. She hoped they looked like a couple having a sweet (work party appropriate) moment, instead of the sinful act that was taking place underneath the table.
He could feel how wet she was, how hard she was trying not to come around his fingers. He slowed his pace moderately, now deliberately stroking that spot. She hummed into the sleeve of his shirt, laying her other hand on his leg as she started loosing all control. It wasn't until then that he realised how hard he was. He was so wrapped up in trying to get her to come, that his raging boner came second in his thoughts. He was fully aware of how hot this was. The risk of being caught at any moment wasn't lost on him, but on he went stroking and circling those devious digits until Chloe couldn't hold back any longer and was thrown into her orgasm.
She could feel her whole body shaking as her climax rocked through her. She wanted to cry out, to alleviate the sounds she'd been keeping in but she couldn't. Stuart kept pumping until he was confident she'd been completely satisfied. She looked up at him, to find that he'd been watching her the whole time. Becoming insanely aroused just by her getting off. He removed his fingers from her as she leaned back into her own chair. Her eyes never left him and she watch as he sucked on the same two fingers that were just inside her, cleaning them.
If possible, Chloe was even wetter than she was post come. But she couldn't forget herself. She wasn't entirely sure why whatever had just happened, happened but she still loathed Ol’ Stewie boy and that wasn't going to change just because he skillfully made her come in a room full of people without anyone ever taking notice.
Stuart smirked before he stood, bidding the table goodbye and mentioning something about having cleaning duties to attend to. Chloe felt a slight pang in her stomach at his departure, but instantly caught ahold of herself. This wasn't over, Stuart Stupid Twombly had another thing coming.
Chloe had gotten herself good and drunk at this point. She hadn't done intentionally, but Stuart kept popping up in her head and she had to drown him out somehow. Now, she was on the dance floor swaying to the beat by herself. She was mildly aware that she was embarrassing herself, but in her current state she didn't even care.
Stuart stood on the other side of the room, but from there he could see her perfectly. He too had downed one too many vodka orange juices and was chuckling to himself as he watched the girl twirling to her own beat. His guard was complete down right now so he had no problem admitting to himself how insanely hot she looked tonight. Or how her tiny dress left very little to the imagination. He felt himself harden slightly, and grabbed another glass of champagne as the waiter passed. He chugged it all in one go before tossing the glass in the trashcan he was supposed to be bagging up and taking out to the dumpster.
The song changed to an upbeat tempo and Chloe’s movements changed. They went from silly and girly, to sultry and hypnotic. Her hips swung to the beat, and Stuart couldn't stop watching them. He watched as she circled around, gyrating and he didn't remember her ass looking that good a few seconds ago. He wanted that ass to be grinding into him. But it was Chloe, he reminded himself.
He hated her.
He could see her dress riding up her thighs as she dipped lowly and slowly stood back up and Stuart threw caution to the wind, scurrying over to her. Her back was to him when he came up behind her, grabbing her hips, and pushing them roughly into his. She yelped, although it was barely heard over the music, and craned her neck over her shoulder. She smiled toothily when she saw Stuart, and he hadn't expected that. She faced forward again, now willfully working her ass into his hips. Stuart growled as she bent over slightly, glancing back at with a smile he'd never seen before from her. It wasn't her cocky smile or her fake one. This had to be the most genuine ‘I'm having a good time’ one he'd ever seen her have.
And goddamn was it sexy.
He spun her around, their bodies so close that Chloe could feel his hard member on her thigh. Which adversely had her panties drenched. She, for the first time probably ever, was looking into his eyes. She'd never notice the way the streams of gold swirled around the brown in his eyes. They were quite beautiful, although she'd never ever tell him that.
He held her to him, his fingers finding the cut out of her dress and tucking into it. He imagined himself ripping it off over her, which ultimately lead to him thinking about what she looked like underneath the dress, which also lead to them sprinting out of the room like two crazy idiots.
They barely made it into the hallway before their lips were crashing into each others. Stuart practically threw her into the nearest wall, his lips attacking every inches of skin on her neck they could find. Chloe wasn't complaining though, she was already pulling Stuart's shirt from its untucked position. Eager to be as close to him as possible.
An over exaggerated clearing of someone's snapped both of their attentions up. In unison they looked over to find the shaky old lady that was sitting next to Chloe earlier, looking rather appalled at the pair.
“Keep moving old lady.” Chloe hollered, and Stuart looked at her.
That was not the Chloe he or anyone else knew. Which only solidify they theory he'd been forming since he knew who she was. Chloe was not the girl she pretended to be. She had a fire in her that she dulled, but for the life of him he couldn't figure out why.
The old lady pulled her coat tighter around her, sticking her nose in the air, walking off in her usual shaky fashion. Stuart flipped her off as she walked away and Chloe laughed, pulling Stuart into a long, intentional kiss. She licked at his lips, asking for entrance and he didn't think twice before letting her. He could really taste her now. She mostly tasted like whiskey, but there was also a sweetness to her that made him cup around the sides of her face and push their faces closer together. He couldn't get enough of the taste of her.
When they pulled away, they both felt more intoxicated than they had minutes earlier. Stuart's glasses were foggy from their exchanges of hot and heavy breathing. But as it cleared, it was like Stuart was seeing a whole new person. The girl standing in front of him now was not the prim and proper goody good he loathed. The one standing in front of him was disheveled and in complete disarray and the sexiest woman alive.
He smiled down at her, grasping her hand in his and pulling her along as they searched for an empty banquet hall.
[Traditional Enneagram] Nice to meet you guys, care to help finding my Enneagram? :)
Hi guys, I'm Jacopo, 22, from Florence in Italy :) I recently discovered that I'm a INTP in MBTI system, but I'm still having troubles finding an enneagram that identify myself, if you wish to help I'd be glad :) Main Questions 1. What do you think your life is about? What drives you in life? This can be something like a goal or a purpose, or anything else that comes to mind. I would like to accomplish something good, that could leave a definite change in people close to me and, if possible, on the society. I care a lot about self expression and finding myself, so, I'd love to walk at the end of this life, knowing that I've done something that I loved and helped in some way others. I'm mostly driven by harmony, backed up with a bit of ambition and compromise, I'm quite indecisive on things because I constantly self-doubt myself, but I'd love to reach my objectives! I'm having troubles at University, law course, but, my main concern is managing in some way to get myself moving and finally reach the professions I'd love to do 2. What were you like as a kid? I was quite easygoing and peaceful, I always preferred to have relations with adults, but had pretty good times with my friend too! I was a lot more extraverted and expressive, than, in middle school I quite had a shock after the separation of my parents and ended up becoming more insecure (also, because at my school there were pretty terrible people that I simply couldn't manage to build a bridge witht them), in high school I was more open, still having troubles with classmates, but I had a group of friends that was pretty strong and united, so I knew I could have relied on them! Now, in my 20s I'm more easy-going,. pretty adaptable to every situation and have a tendency to make people comfortable and they open up with me, maybe because they feel listened to without being judged (at least, based on what others said :P) and, some people also told me I'm quite enthusiasthic and easily have a knack to "get" other people (I'm not very empathethic, but I have a tendency of relying on my instincts and usually receiving correct impressions on other people, and I learned to trust this sensations) 3. Describe your relationship with your parents. Does anything stand out about the way you interacted? The bond with my other is the strongest I have, since she raised me and we had to always count on each other, while with my father I just recently started to relate with and understand him, but I really don't respect him as a "man" in the strict sense, even if i love him anyway. With my mom we easily get each other, and she's the one I feel most comfrotable in being "assertive" and have constructive discussions, while with others I'm a lot more accomodating and usually act as a counselor for them (even if I think I really suck a it xD) 4. What values are important to you? What do you hope to avoid doing or being? For me (not in a particular order) Kindness, free speech, openness, exhcanging values and ideas, helpfulness, reliability, freedom, harmony, balance and adaptability; I want to make sure that others could count on me (whil I tend not to share very much of my internal struggles, preferring to give rather than receive, but I appreciate a lot when they do so) I fear the idea of being shamed or been seen as a critic heartless guy, with bad manners and a fiery temper. I try to keep self-control most of the time, but sometimes I burst very strongly and explosively :/ I also avoid at all costs to hurt others in any way 5. Aside from phobias, are there any fears that characterized your childhood? Have they continued into the present day, or not, and if not, how have you dealt with them? Not very much, aside the fact that I fear the idea of not being accepted or being harshly criticized or demonized; I lived as a cast out during middle school, I won't definitely end up in a similar situation since it was pretty disturbing... Also, I fear the idea of being bent and bossed around in the workplace, I could hardly stand a situation like that. 6. a.) How do you see yourself? I am quite easygoing, self-disciplined and peaceful, kinda zen in certain situations and try not to being swayed by panic in crisis. I'd like to think I have good intellectual capabilities, but always end up diminsihing them. I'm open, sociable and like to meet new people, while building a relationship is a complete different story. Aside my Ti dominance. I'm quite romatic at heart and I try (and hope) to be as helpful as possible to people close to me. I'm indecisive, not very assertive and definitely not imposing, even if I enjoy an intellectual discussion as long as I'm sure that the other won't be offended or take it badly, in that case I'd prefer to change topic or sometimes omitt my ideas... I try to look for compromises in different situations. b.) How do you want others to see you? I'd like, as I said, be seen as helpful and reliable, disciplined and a competent guy who could been given a job project and make others sure sure I'd make it. c.) What do you dislike the most in other people? Intolerance, close mindness, judgmental people who can't see a perspective different from theirs. I hate unpolitness and uncompromising non-cooperativity; I avoid as hell imposing people that boss around others and obstruct the possibility of expressing a free opinion... 7. Which habit do you most automatically act on? Rank the following habits from most to least automatic, on a scale of 1 (most) to 3 (least). a.)2. Work for personal gain with more concern for self than for others. I'd like to get wealth, but I wouldn't make it a priority over helping others or compromising b) 1. Strive for a sense of tranquility in yourself and the world around you Definitely, I look for a mental and spiritual fulfillment and always search for harmony 8. Where does the wandering mind take you? What provokes this? It switches between theories and knowledge I'm researching on (especially in pesonality typing, I like to have a mental archive of what others' types I think they are) to past experiences or , when I'm out, coming home and relaxing in a tranquil atmosphere. Mostly when I'm pretty tired or not interested in things I watch/listen to or that are explained to me :O 9. What makes you feel your best? What makes you feel your worst? The idea of tranquility, relax, cutting off my mind and just enjoy the peace of senses around me (I'd like to learn to meditate in beautiful surroundings); when I follow my many hobbies, dedicating my time to them; when I know that people that comes to me loooking for advices are feeling helped What makes me feel bad are strong, explosive and destructive discussions that could only harm a relationship or a strong bond; hypocrisy; indecisiveness and procrastination (two of my worst habits); feeling underappreciated or diminished 10. Let's talk about emotions. Explain what might make you feel the following, how they feel to you or how you react to the emotion: a.) anger I try to hide it, I just let it go wild with my family since I live with them, especially when my mentally illed grandma don't let my mother breathing since my mom is always stressed and has too many negative things going on lately... when pushed to the very limit I really bust out, but I mostly try to supress it, take a deep breath, and find common ground while having discussion (as I said, I'm totally incapacitated on imposing myself or assert others xD) Luckily I'm really patient on certain things, especially social and relationship issues ahah b.) shame I hate feeling ashamed, especially when put on the spot under the highlights and making terrible impressions. I'm improving this quite a bit, taking in it in a more zen and tranquil approach xD c.) anxiety I always try to focus on the bright side, pushing anxiety away, but it usally manifests itself when I self-doubt myself and end up in a grip of negative possibilities , but can snap out of it quite fast luckily :/ 11. Describe how you respond to the following: a.) stress I have a tendency to put it away, focusing more on being unfloating and self-disciplined, without giving to much attention to it; eventualy it end up accumulating and bursting out, giving me some anger explosions (and I usually feel bad afterwards) or just a constant feeling of sleepiness and dizziness D: b.) negative unexpected change I learned to accept it and usually try to make the best out of it, but, in the beginning, it could shake me up quite a bit c.) conflict Personally, I can be pretty assertive and obstinate in my ideas, but without being uncompromised and pushing on them; I'm pretty open, and look forward, for them to be confuted and discarded and usually have a tendency to "let them go"; with others people, I simply act by ignoring it or trying to mediate it in a peace-keeping act 12 a.) What kind of role are you naturally inclined to take in a group? Why? I switch between being quite enthusiatically and involve others, or simply being as a counselor that listens to others ramblings a lot, activating my troubleshooting mood to help them figure out a solution for themselves xD b.) If put in power, how do you behave? Why? I won't be good, definitely. I would probably end up being pushed around by others, or not imposing, trying to keep things going smoothly in an organized way and trying to find a good sistemation for everyone in the group. c.) Do you tend to struggle with others who have authority over you? Why? I'm quite obedient, even if skeptical because I want the respect to be earned and not given just because they have an authority position. I won't cause big commotions (even if I have revolutionary and rebelling ideas) because, especially at work, they could use their powers over me. 13. What do you see or notice in others that most people don't? Mostly motives and explanation of behaviours, but I won't take them for granted, even if I trust my hunches and intuitions a lot :P 14. Comment on your relationship with trust. I hardly give complete trust to someone, but, when I do, they have it until the very end, except if strongly betrayed in some way 15. Briefly: What religious and/or political beliefs do you have? Do you think they influenced your responses in this questionnaire? I have tendencies pretty close to Buddhism and oriental philosphy and religions, and, yes, since I studied them a bit I think they have biased my questionnaire :P On political, I'm mostly apolitic since I don't pick a side, just because that side is leftist or rightist, I prefer individual ideas and explanations, but I probably have some ideas pretty close to socialism-liberalism, but this preference efinitely didn't influence my questionnaire Optional Question (due to personal nature) Discuss an event that has impacted your life significantly; more importantly, how you responded to it. How I was acknwledged at my workplace, it definitely boosted my self-confidence and helped my insecurity issues, experience is the ebst teacher for me :P Extra Questions Which of the following temptations do you find yourself acting upon the most? (And briefly state why) To cyclically become indecisive and seek others for reassurance. I'm indecisive AF, and rely mostly on my family in help with it, and, yes, I keep asking close friend of mine for reassurance if I'm on the right path xD To overuse imagination in searching for yourself. Definitely, I love to understand and learn about things, and so I immediately apply them to me, feeling mostly biased on my hypothesis about my essence To avoid conflicts and asserting yourself. When pushed hard I become pretty obstinate and unyielding, but never, ever impose myself on others, I see it as some form of trampling and disrespect; I can sometimes become pretty stubborn and assertive in my positions in these situations, but I would definitely sacrifice assertiveness in favor of less fierce discussions What's something you are: a.) thankful you have b.) wish you could have? Why? I'm thankful to have people who believe in me and my capacities close to me, and also I'm really thankful I have a good deductive reasoning and dot connectings ability :D I wish I could been less indecisive, more fierce and determined without being detoured or changing my mind a lot, since it always make me procrastinate important things sorry for the long post and my English, it's not my mother language :) If you have more questions I'd love to answer to them Thanks a lot for the help and your patience *gives cookie for having the patience of reaching this point* Nice to meet you anyway guys!!!! My weekly review of things I have been reading and thinking about. Topics include social endeavors, software engineering, dealing with being stuck, and banning exercise for the environment.
Social Endeavors
This week I have started a new project, still not very well defined, to quantify the return on social endeavors. For now “social endeavors” is a broad concept, encapsulating things like R&D projects, business ventures, political movements, warfare, and so forth.
My working criteria for what constitutes a social endeavor are as follows.
1) A well-defined, discrete goal. Thus NASA is not a social endeavor, and the Apollo Program is a social endeavor.
2) Continuity of effort over time and agent. The International Space Station is a social endeavor, even though it involves multiple countries, because it is a collaboration. The American and Soviet lunar exploration programs are distinct social endeavors because, even though they worked toward similar goals, there was no collaboration.
3) The goal of the endeavor should be mostly fixed over its execution. If the goal mutates too far from its original conception, it is not the same endeavor.
4) The goal should be bounded and not open-ended, though for now I am unsure how strict to be on this criterion.
We can look at some of the highest rate of return for endeavors in history, at least for which there are reasonably good estimates. Eradication of smallpox and the Human Genome Project would be high on that list, with ROIs well over 100. Public subsidies for stadiums are probably net losers.
I am well aware of the risks associated with such a research project. First is a quantification bias, which will surely discount the value of endeavors with benefits that are real but difficult to quantify, will overvalue endeavors with costs that are real but difficult to quantify, and will also bias in favor of larger endeavors for which data is more readily available. There is probably a survivorship bias in the literature, in that successful endeavors will be better studied and better known than unsuccessful endeavors. I certainly know more about smallpox eradication than I do about unsuccessful attempts to eradicate other diseases.
Since the major motivating factor behind this project is to predict what kind of endeavors will be successful in the future, a second major risk is the cargo cult effect. It is the reasoning, “X was successful before, Y is similar to X, therefore we should do Y”. Such reasoning rarely leads to success because it does not question why X was successful and whether the similarities of Y to X are relevant. This is not to discount the importance of looking to historical precedent in evaluating future policy options, only to do so intelligently.
Understanding the success of social endeavors requires a strong qualitative understanding in addition to quantifiable metrics such as ROI. I am starting with quantitative metrics because I like things that are tangible and they help ground the qualitative work. For qualitative work, this week Andreas Hein put a new paper on the ArXiv drawing a comparison between starship construction and cathedral construction; I recommend it for anyone interested in space colonization or megaprojects more generally.
We’ll see where this project goes, if anywhere. Right now it is in an exploratory phase. The majority of my projects begin and end in the exploratory phase.
Software Engineering
There come several points in all our lives, and for me one such point is now, where we have to put some serious thought into our long-term careers and take action to insure that they are successful. While I enjoy my current role and plan to stay in it for the foreseeable future, it poses a high risk of stagnation and does not offer the security that I need to confidently provide for my family. To that end, I am recommitting to software engineering work.
Programming is a good, general purpose skill. For Urban Cruise Ship, I built the site in Node.js, styled it with Bootstrap, and do data analysis with Python. I recently dusted off my Matplotlib skills to revamp a graphic for the site. I recently learned some basics of React and used it to build a game. I can be confident that, no mater where I go professionally, I will benefit from better programming skills.
I made some major advances in my software skills in 2013-14, a time when I was serious about pursuing a software engineering career route, but since then I have let my skills stagnate while turning to other priorities. Now it is time for more progress.
I am working on a bug tracker app, which I hope to get online in the next week or two. It uses a Node backend; PostgreSQL to store data about users, projects, and issues; a React frontend; and a Bootstrap theme for styling. PostgreSQL is a new tool for me, and I am still shaky with React. The greater challenge is that I have not attempted such a complex combination of technologies before, and so doing is another skill. Deployment will also be a challenge, and I will cross that bridge when I get to it.
Software engineering is a bit like academic research in at least one respect. Every time I learn a new skill, I discover several more that I could learn, and so the frontier is continually expanding.
Dealing with Being Stuck
I think about stagnation a lot on the societal level, and now lately much more on the personal level.
When I have a clear goal that I am motivated to achieve and a clear path for doing so, I work efficiently and effectively and can get it done. When I lack a clear goal or a path for achieving it, I fall into a trap of work avoidance. If you observe heightened activity from me on social media, for instance, that is a symptom of being in such a state. It becomes a vicious circle, where work avoidance causes the obstacles to success to appear amorphous and chronic, leading to more work avoidance. It can lead to pseudowork: activity that vaguely looks like work but is not productive, such as reading news article tangentially related to my work area or engaging in unconstructive social media conversation. It is probably fair to say that this dynamic contributed to the failure of my previous job.
Since I can tell I have fallen into such a state this week with my current job, I am keen on understanding this “stuck” state: specifically how to recognize it early and how to get out. Pseudowork can be a kind of thrashing around, which a trapped animal for instance does when there is no clear path to escape. Maybe that’s actually the best solution in some cases. But I generally think that systematic approaches to problems are better.
In a job, being stuck might be a symptom of one or more of the following:
1) Lack of clarity on project goals. I need to better define the project myself or seek clarity from the manager/client.
2) The project is too difficult. Maybe it can’t be done, or maybe it can be done but I lack the skill to do it. In a work environment, especially when under the gun from management, it is difficult to admit that one is struggling and may seem preferable to do pseudowork to generate the illusion of progress. One needs to renegotiate project scope, or perhaps push harder to upgrade skills.
3) The job itself does not support my life goals. Maybe I am no longer interested in the field, or the job offers no viable paths to advancement, or the workplace is toxic. Then the best solution may be to make a switch.
I try to approach the problem by working backwards. What is my long term goal? What are the major things that need to happen to achieve this goal? How does the project fit into that goal? I won’t say that I have figured this problem out, but I have made some progress.
Banning Exercise for the Environment
The following is a silly thought experiment in the spirit of Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, not a serious idea. Internet culture being what it is, such disclaimers are necessary (though probably still not sufficient).
There are various environmental movements out there that encourage (sometimes with the force of law) people to avoid eating meat*, driving, having children, having pets, using plastic, flying, or engaging in other activities generally regarded as central to modern living (or living at all). But I have never heard anyone argue that we should avoid exercising for the environment. Maybe we should.
About a quarter of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and the vast majority of anthropogenic land use, are related to agriculture. A person with an active lifestyle requires about 25% more calories than a person with a sedentary lifestyle. The greenhouse gas reduction of going from an active to sedentary lifestyle is thus comparable to switching from an internal combustion to electric car, or cutting driving by half, or switching to a vegetarian diet (these are mental, back-of-the envelope estimates, not serious calculations). From a land sparing perspective, television and the Internet might be the best inventions ever, and the gym might be one of the worst.
To my knowledge, the only environmentalist takes on exercise encourage people to go hiking or cycling in natural areas to foster environmental consciousness. I am not aware of anyone who has taken seriously the environmental impact of burning those extra calories. While I don’t think this is a good idea, I also don’t think it is a good idea to discourage people from flying or having children for environmental reasons, as these are valuable, prosocial activities, yet such exhortations are common.
I think we all know that lifestyle politics are generally not about dispassionate cost-benefit analysis. But I probably should understand better what they really are about to engage these issues more seriously.
* I don’t eat meat myself, and I don’t claim to reject all lifestyle environmentalism.
On Senate Floor, Portman Urges Senate to Take Action on the Bipartisan Restore Our Parks Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) delivered remarks on the Senate floor highlighting his Restore Our Parks Act. Portman’s bipartisan legislation would help address the nearly $12 billion backlog of long-delayed maintenance projects at the National Park Service (NPS). The bill would do so by establishing the “National Park Service Legacy Restoration Fund” to reduce the maintenance backlog by allocating half of the existing unobligated revenues the government receives from on and offshore energy development up to $1.3 billion per year for the next five years.
A transcript of his remarks can be found below and a video can be found here:
   “Mr. President, I also want to talk about another important topic, which are our national parks. Our parks are an absolute treasure for our country. They are beautiful places, beautiful public lands. As important, they are part of our American culture and part of the history we have as a country and it is important to preserve that legacy. As an example, in Ohio we have the Wright Brothers shop and home in Dayton, Ohio. It stands as an inspiration to anybody who dreams big dreams because that’s what these two brothers did. You can see where these two Ohio brothers changed the world and otherwise, frankly, they lived a pretty ordinary life and preserving their home and that shop is really important to see that. Anybody can dream big and make a big difference. We have a responsibility to preserve that site and so many others that are important to our history for generations to come.
“The National Park System includes more than 84 million acres of parks and historical sites that now attract more than 330 million visitors annually. It’s an amazing system. By the way, I was told yesterday that only one department or agency of the federal government has more assets than the national park, and that’s the Department of Defense with all of the military bases and all of the physical assets they have, otherwise it’s the parks. The parks have an enormous number of buildings, roads, bridges, water systems, and visitor centers and so on. And in my home state of Ohio, alone, we’ve got eight of those national parks, including Cuyahoga Valley National Park which is the 13th most visited park in the United States of America, we’re very proud of Cuyahoga Valley. Whether it’s biking or hiking or fishing or kayaking, I’m one of those 2.7 million visitors in Ohio’s national parks every year. In fact, the weekend after next I’ll be at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park with my wife enjoying that beautiful park.
“So these parks are treasures and they have so many wonderful facilities, but the problem is that over time, we’ve allowed a maintenance backlog to build up, meaning so many of these buildings and infrastructure, roads, bridges, water systems I talked about are deteriorating to the point that some of them are actually not being used. So if you go to a national park, you may see that a trail is closed or a visitors’ center can’t be visited. You may see some of the facilities that provide overnight lodging aren’t available anymore. Why? Because our parks, frankly, are kind of crumbling from within. They may look great on the outside, and they’re beautiful, but there is now a $12 billion backlog of deferred maintenance at our parks. Now, this has become a real problem. By the way, that’s equal to nearly four times the annual budget of the parks. They just don’t have the resources to keep up with these deferred maintenance costs, which tend to be longer-term costs, more expensive, longer-term, frankly, not as interesting to fund. You know, it’s not as interesting for Congress to fund fixing the roof on the maintenance building at Yellowstone National Park as it is to set up a new nature program for visitors. So this has become a problem. And you think about your own home. If you allow deferred maintenance to build up, you don’t take care of the roof, for instance, what happens? You get a leak in your roof. And then you find out the drywall is ruined or the paint is ruined or the floor is ruined. And the costs mount up. That’s what’s happening in our parks right now. And when maintenance projects aren’t completed on time, it’s called getting delayed or getting deferred. That’s what we’re focused on.
“By the way, nearly two-thirds of that deferred maintenance is attributable to our national parks’ aging infrastructure. So this would be, again, roads and bridges and buildings and so on. The national parks just celebrated its 100th birthday in 2016. So a lot of us were very excited about that. A hundred years of these beautiful national treasures, but many of the facilities across the country, therefore, are very old. A lot are more than 80 years old. Some are almost 100 years old and a lot are in need of repair, badly in need of repair.
“Visitation at our parks has increased in recent years. This has added to this burden. It’s not only that there were deferred maintenance costs, things being put off, but with more and more visitors, there’s more and more pressure on the parks. From 2006 until 2017, 10 years, in that period alone, annual visitation to our national parks increased by more than 58 million people. That’s a good thing. To me it’s a good thing. More people getting outdoors, particularly families taking their kids outdoors and enjoying the parks and learning more about nature and about our history. But it’s put more and more pressure on the parks. The challenges of keeping up with this aging infrastructure and increased visitation has stretched the Park Service thin and required them to focus on just the very immediate maintenance needs they have--and postponing or delaying these projects that can’t be completed on schedule. We can’t keep our parks in peak condition through band aids.
“Some of this will require years of work and planning that goes into it, which requires certainty and consistency about funding. When you do the annual appropriations process here, as you know, it’s year to year. You don’t know how much money you’ll get. Sometimes we have to cut back. They need to know there’s going to be some funding there, some certainty to be able to make some of these much needed repairs to our parks. Unless we take action, of course, it’s just going to get worse. We talked about that, when you don’t deal with deferred maintenance, it tends to build up and become worse. The $12 billion backlog is increasing at a rate of about three percent per year. That’s because, as the experts told us, it’s a compounding issue, meaning maintenance projects that go unaddressed often create these other problems. It creates more cost to repair. The spike in visitation at national parks over recent years puts more pressure on them, and the longer we wait, the more expensive it gets for the taxpayers, better to move now to address these maintenance needs than to wait as they become more and more expensive.
“When roads, bridges, parking lots, pathways decay, people are not able to visit those sites often. Again, some are even shut down. I mentioned that there were 330 million people a year that visit our parks. There are also 330 million people, therefore, that are spending money around our parks. So it’s a huge economic driver. For those listening who come from states like mine where we have big national parks like Cuyahoga Valley National Park, those communities really want to be sure that we continue to have vibrant parks and that people continue to want to visit and can visit in order to get the broader economic benefit. This is important all over the country.
“In my state of Ohio--where we don’t have the big parks like Yellowstone or Yosemite but we have some great parks--in my state of Ohio alone, there’s more than a $100 million in overdue maintenance. In Cuyahoga Valley National Park, there’s more than $45 million of backlog. Completing these long-overdue projects will make a big difference for the visitor experience. The needed maintenance includes, at Cuyahoga Valley for example, $875,000 for badly needed renovations for the welcome center. I’ve been there. I’ve seen it. They need the help. $274,000 for renovations to a shelter, $6 million in renovations for roads, parking lots to ensure people have parking, water infrastructure improvements which, you know, water infrastructure not maybe the sexiest project to support but a really important one, really important that we ensure that we have this infrastructure in place. It’s the conservative thing to do.
“Helping our Park Service has long been a priority of mine and dealing with this backlog as well. About 12 years ago when I served as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the George W. Bush administration, I launched in our budget something that President Bush and Mrs. Bush were strongly supportive of which was a Centennial Initiative. Again, thinking the centennial was coming up in 2016, 10 years later, we wanted to put in place the idea to be able to use public-private partnerships to fund the parks. We were successful in getting some of that started, but frankly the Congress did not pass the legislation to do it, but I continued that effort when I was here as United States Senator as co-chair of the Congressional Friends of the National Parks for its centennial.
“I authored a bill that we set up in 2006 that finally created this endowment fund to be able to take private-public partnerships. Part of it is with the park and part of it is with the National Park Foundation. That bill called the National Park Service Centennial Act was signed into law during the year of the National Park Service’s centennial anniversary and the two funds together that were codified in that law have now provided more than $200 million to address maintenance backlog. By the way, more than $125 million of that has been private dollars, non-federal dollars. Again, the idea was to provide a federal match to encourage more people who loved the parks to be able to contribute. We did better than the legislation required which was a one-to-one match, $200 million total, $125 million of which comes from non-federal sources. That funding helps. I’m proud of that. Frankly, as I mentioned earlier, a $12 billion backlog, maintenance backlog, requires even more. And as soon as we’re able to do that, we need to do it because the costs are just going up.
“I recently authored legislation with three of my colleagues, senators Mark Warner, Lamar Alexander, Angus King, two Republicans, one Democrat, one Independent. It’s called Restore Our Parks Act. The bill now has eight additional cosponsors, both Democrats and Republicans, and I’m hopeful that many more of my colleagues will join us as well. The legislation is the product of bipartisan agreement on consensus legislation that combines two similar bills that were already introduced. One was with Senator Warner and myself, one with Senator Alexander and Senator King.
“The Restore Our Parks Act is a common-sense solution to this $12 billion in long overdue projects and ensuring that we can do the maintenance to keep the parks up to speed. It creates a Legacy Restoration Fund, which will get half of all the annual energy revenues over the next five years that are not otherwise allocated to be used for priority deferred maintenance projects. This is funding, this is royalties on offshore leases, let’s say, and onshore energy projects. Some of the funding goes to Land and Water Conservation Fund, will continue to go there. These are funds that are otherwise are unobligated. The bill caps and deposits into the fund at $1.3 billion a year which would provide a total of $6.5 billion for deferred maintenance projects at our parks over the next five years. It’s not the whole amount now but it’s historic. We’ve never had this much funding being put into the parks at this time, and, again, it provides that certainty to know it’s going to be there year after year and for this purpose only. About two-thirds of those funds will go towards buildings, utilities, visitor facilities and about one-third will go to transportation projects like roads and pathways. Through simply using funds that the government is already taking in from these on and offshore energy development projects and not depositing them in the general Treasury, we can cut our national parks’ long overdue maintenance backlog in half. This is exciting because about half of these projects, about $6 billion of the $12 billion are what the Park Service calls urgent projects, urgent priorities. So we will at least be able to have the certainty to know the funds will be there for the larger projects that need to get done and certainty that we’ll never find through the end of the appropriations process.
“We’ll be able to get some of the bigger, longer-term maintenance projects done to be able to restore the beauty of our parks where needed. The legislation is broadly supported, the Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke and Trump administration support it. I want to thank Secretary Zinke personally because he has really committed himself to this issue. When he went through the confirmation process, we talked about the maintenance issue at the parks. Like every good fiscal conservative, he said this needs to be addressed and addressed now. Otherwise it’s going to get worse and worse. Instead of adding more to the parks, giving them more responsibilities, let’s be better stewards of what we have. I agree with that philosophy and commend him for that and for his support and help to ensure that the administration supports it. Mick Mulvaney, the OMB Director, has also been very helpful to ensure we can use this funding source and they are supportive of it. We have support from so many outside groups. I can’t name them all but I want to mention the National Park and Conservation Association, they’ve been terrific as has Pew Charitable Trust. So many other groups, the Outdoor Industry Association, many more have endorsed it.
“Just yesterday we had a hearing on this legislation in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks chaired by Steve Daines from Montana, who is one of the cosponsors of this legislation. And again, Steve Daines is a guy with a personal passion for the parks, having grown up in the shadow of Yellowstone Park. We had experts, we had conservation groups, all voicing their support for this legislation at our hearing. The director of the Pew Charitable Trust said it well, she said, ‘supporting this bipartisan bill is a wise investment for our national park system and has overwhelming support from the American public, generates hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars for the economy each year and provides access to world class recreation opportunities and helps preserve our nation’s history.’ Deb Yolanda, who is the CEO of the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park and also, by the way, president of the National Association of all the Friends Groups for the parks said, and I quote, ‘supporters of our national parks across the country are thrilled with this bill. Addressing deferred maintenance will greatly improve the visitors experience and go a long way toward protecting important historic and natural resources at our parks. This bill makes sense. It will help make our national parks even better for the hundreds of millions of visitors every year who take in their beauty and their history.’
“I urge the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to approve this bill quickly. I know Senator Murkowski is a strong supporter of our parks and as chair of that committee, I know she will be supportive of moving forward, same with Maria Cantwell, the ranking member. And I hope the full Senate will vote on this legislation soon and vote on it now so that we can move forward quickly. We want to make the second hundred years of our national parks as magnificent and successful as the first hundred years has been. This bill is necessary to be able to do that. And I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting this legislation.”
AMD is charging back into the enterprise data center and select HPC workflows with its new EPYC 7000 processor line, code-named Naples, announced today at a “global” launch event in Austin TX. In many ways it was a full frontal assault on Intel’s dominance in the x86 data center landscape. Claiming performance and cost advantages and supported by statements from key OEMs, ODMs, and hyperscalers – HPE, Dell, and Microsoft Azure for example – AMD is hoping to convince HPC and data center customers it is back for the long haul.
Aware there may be market reluctance after its absence from the data center, Scott Aylor, AMD corporate VP and GM of enterprise solutions business, said “It’s not enough to come back with one product, you’ve got to come back with a product cadence that moves as the market moves. So not only are we coming back with EPYC, we’re also [discussing follow-on products] so when customers move with us today on EPYC they know they have a safe home and a migration path with Rome.” AMD has committed to socket compatibility between EPYC 7000 line and Rome, code name of the next scheduled generation AMD processor aimed at the data center.
AMD showcased some gaudy performance and price-performance benchmarks comparing EPYC to Broadwell line. In a pre-launch briefing with HPCwire, Aylor said, “These numbers are very big, so they show very measurable separation from what is available with Broadwell. Part of that is quite frankly because we didn’t design EPYC to compete with Broadwell. We designed it to compete with what’s coming. When [Intel’s] Skylake comes later this summer, we think these comparisons will still be very strong against the platinum, gold silver and bronze of Skylake.”
Based on the Zen core, EPYC is a line of system on a chip (SoC) devices designed with enhanced memory bandwidth and fast interconnect in mind. AMD also introduced a one-socket device, optimized for many workloads, which AMD says will invigorate a viable one-socket server market. With EPYC, “we can build a no compromise one-socket offering that will allow us to cover up to 50 percent of the two-socket market that is today held by the [Intel Broadwell] E5-2650 and below,” said Aylor.
AMD clearly has big ambitions. Earlier this spring it introduced Ryzen7 processor line, also based on the Zen core, and targeting high performance gaming. EPYC is aimed squarely at the data center. Aylor briefed HPCwire on EPYC before the launch and some of the technical details were still not available. It is an SoC product stack with a range of offerings roughly mimicking the Broadwell product stack. EPYC has up to 32 cores and 8 DDR4 channels per CPU allowing it to address 2TB of memory. The I/O is 128 PCIe lanes.
“The SoC approach we have taken allows all of the IO that has historically lived on an external bridge or IO hub to be fully integrated that into the device,” said Aylor. One result is low latency high performance connections. The PCIe lanes are configurable, “so you can use them to connect to SATA links, directly connect to NVMe links. It also facilitates a strong connection to high performance GPUs.” AMD plans to show an EPYC plus Radeon Instinct GPU machine learning platform at its conference this week.”
AMD presented both SPECint (integer) and SPECfp (floating point) performance comparisons with the Broadwell as well as price point comparisons (how much performance the same number of dollars will be of each processor) some of which are shown below.
“We’re tiering products in 32, 24, and 16-core ranges,” said AYLOR. The idea, of course, is satisfy widely varying needs. The top end aimed at scale out and HPC workloads, he said. The bottom tier allows users to closely manage per core licensing costs. “We have tried to cover the vast majority of the market that exists today in the Broadwell family,” says Aylor. Every product will have a dedicated security processor.
“Sometime people will say benchmarks are interesting but how do you do in the real world. Well we will showcase a fluid dynamics HPC workload, Apache/Spark, and software defined storage reference architecture [at the launch]. We will also have an open stack cloud based implementation,” said Aylor. AMD was expecting n the order 600 attendees for the EPYC launch.
Moving back into the data center is a huge bet by AMD that’s required a very substantial investment in the Zen core and EPYC. Seeking to buttress the gamble, AMD has seemingly got buy-in from several market makers and many ecosystem partners. Here are four endorsements included in the official release; while the statements are on the over enthusiastic side they nonetheless suggest AMD has done product groundwork with partners:
HPE. “The EPYC processor represents a paradigm shift in computing and will usher in a new era for the IT ecosystem,” said Antonio Neri, EVP and general manager Enterprise Group, HPE. “Starting with the Cloudline CL3150 and expanding into other product lines later this year, the arrival of EPYC in HPE systems will be welcomed by customers who are eager to deploy the performance and innovation EPYC delivers.”
Dell EMC. “As an industry leader, we are committed to driving IT Transformation for our customers,” said Ashley Gorakhpurwalla, president, server solutions division at Dell EMC, “Our next generation of PowerEdge servers are the bedrock of the modern data center that are designed to maximize business scalability and intelligent automation with integrated security. The combination of PowerEdge and the AMD EPYC performance and security capabilities will create unique compute solutions for our customers to accelerate workloads and protect their business.”
Baidu. “As the world’s largest Chinese language search engine and leading AI-Tech company, Baidu prides itself on simplifying a complex world through technology,” said By Dr. Zhang Ya Qin, president of Baidu. “The AMD EPYC processor powered one-socket server can significantly increase our datacenter computing efficiency, reduce TCO and lower energy consumption. We will start deploying with the launch of AMD EPYC and I look forward to our cooperation leading to scaled EPYC adoption this year, and ongoing innovations.”
Microsoft. “We’ve worked to make Microsoft Azure a powerful enterprise grade cloud platform, that helps guide the success of our customers, no matter their size or geography,” said Girish Bablani, corporate vice president, Azure Compute, Microsoft Corp. “To power Azure, we require the most cutting-edge infrastructure and the latest advances in silicon which is why we intend to be the first global cloud provider to deliver AMD EPYC, and its combination of high performance and value, to customers
The single socket gambit is another interesting aspect to AMD’s initiative. Currently two socket servers rule the roost.
Here’s the AMD pitch: “In our one socket offering we have come up with a clever way to maintain all of the I/O capabilities that you would get in a two socket as well as the full complement of eight memory channels. Today people buy two socket, sometimes because they need to but more often because than not because they have to. There are many examples in which I/O rich [workload] like storage, like GPU compute, and some vertical workloads where people don’t necessarily need two sockets from a CPU performance perspective,” said Aylor.
AMD’s single socket offering cuts costs substantially, according to Aylor. “We’ve selectively optimized a couple of skews for one socket only. So these are skews that are one socket capable only,” said Aylor. As an example of how the one socket and two socket offerings are distinguished, he cited on package interconnect, “The infinity fabric that would normally connect the two sockets in a two socket system, we repurpose that interconnect into more I/O lanes and that’s how you have in a two socket solution 128 lanes of PCIe and in a one socket solution you still keep the same level of connectivity.”
AMD has singled out a number of vertical as good fits for one socket EPYC servers. Perhaps not surprisingly, storage is one. “Not only base line storage but software defined storage with EPYC’s ability to attach a massive number of SATA drives to a one socket. We also see a strong opportunity in certain areas of high performance computing, especially those that tend to focus on memory bound application. And we have an oil and gas reservoir simulation demo,” said Aylor.
