Galahad's Onion Brew
Okay, so ever since watching Wizards, one thing that has stuck in my brain was Galahad's "Onion Brew" I don't know if it's just the way John Rhys-Davies voiced the line, or the plausible deniability of such a things alcohol content, but for some ungodly reason, I have, ever since, wanted to know what it would taste like.
Then a friend of mine got me into brewing.
And I made
Onion Ale
Now leaving aside what kind of "brew" Galahad's would most plausibly be, I went with ale because it's easy to water down and drink fast.
Basing it on a recipe for onion wine from a YouTube Brewer, I downed the total sugar to match closer to the alcohol content of an ale (about 6.2%ABV in the end) (which is a bit high, actually) using brown sugar rather than refined sugar or malt.
What I ended up with after a 10 day fermentation, was a cloudy light brown liquid (cloudy because onions have a lot of pectin, and i wasn't in the mood to clear it for aesthetic sake) that absolutely REEKS of onions, it is such an odd and strong scent, that while I was in the process of decanting it, I was informed it could be smelled from the other end of the house.
After bottling the majority of the brew, I sat down with my sample glass to taste it, and it's.... not bad? It's a little sweet with a caramel note, but after it's been in your mouth for a couple seconds, the onion comes through, more and more, and then all you can taste is Onions.
The flavour of onion lingers after one has finished drinking, for hours in fact, and I swear I can still smell it through my digestive tract.
In conclusion it tastes like onions (shocker) and while I would certainly drink it if it was what's on offer, I would perhaps drink just about anything else first, I can only assume that Galahad must REALLY like the flavor of onion to make such a thing.
