Updating the ‘about’ page...

I'm updating my 'About' page, with a few more informations about the purpose of my blog, my history in the fandom, what I look for, what I expect and blah blah blah... er... you know how it happens... one words leads to the other...

Let's start from the title of my blog. Some people were offended by the use of the word 'truth' in it. As it automatically meant that I think of myself as Buffy's only source of truth. Must be that in their world the truth is only something you say and not something you seek?

Anyway, the purpose of my blog is exactly this (What? Do I have to spell it out to you too??) The reason is that I LOVE Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I'm in the BTVS fandom since 2012 (more or less). I'm not going to tell you how it changed my life because in ... er... truth, it didn't, but it indeed made it richer. It made me understand something about myself, about people who have been part of my life and it helped me come to terms with things that have happened to me. Bonus, I discovered a passion for writing and made a few good friends. Well, very few because I'm quite selective!

To me Buffy is one of those shows that makes you think. Really, really think. And I'm not talking only of the metaphors, the themes, the RL analogies etc. I'm talking also and especially of the characters, their personalities, the choices they make, their motivations, where they come from and where they are going. That's what I love the most in this show, what has made me so addicted to it and IMO that's why there are still so many people talking of it after all these years.

So, I'm here to think. To think about Buffy, about those things that are not spelled out openly, about the text and the subtext, about the body language, the facial expressions, the things not said... so, yeah, I'm seeking the 'Buffy truths'. Some I think I have found, others are still there to be discovered.

Now, I know that I'm not the only one with this... hobby, and the evidence is in all the awesome meta and essays out there. But I also know that there is a good part of the fandom that doesn't care much about delving in the depths of BTVS. Some because they believe that "people shouldn't have to think so much to understand things". And to them I say: dude, BTVS is not for you. Go watch the teletubbies and let us think.

Then there is the huge portion of fandom who enjoy posting pics and gifs and spread love about some character or ship, which I occasionally do myself. These are definitely welcome in my blog.

But I'm especially looking for those fans who share my passion and hunger for loooong, in-depth and possibly unbiased debates. So if this is you, PM me, tag me in your posts... whatever, but let me know!

Before ending what had-to-be-just-a-few-words-but-came-out-a-bloody-novel, some heads up/warning based on my experiences in the fandom, so that we both know where we stand:

- I dislike personal attacks, not only against me but also against other people: other fans, the writers, the actors

- we all have our preferences, characters and ships we like or dislike, but let's at least try to keep them away from the debates and to judge only the other's reasoning

- I don't care how long you have been in the fandom. There is no such thing as a degree in BTVS so you may have a lot of funny/interesting stories about what happened in the fandom in the past, but in regards of the show your opinions are just as good as mine

- sometimes we may feel that the debate is at an impasse or that the other is pushing too much. Before someone gets angry let's use the 'agree to disagree' safeword (safephrase really XD). BEFORE. We say the words and the other stops, ok? But please, don't go on asking me oh, what do you think of this and what's your opinion about that and then when I tell you, you get freaking mad (it's happened, I swear)

- I can unfollow someone if we have different views and opinions or if I just don't care about what they have to say, but I never block because of this. If I've blocked you, you can be assured that it's because of one or more of these reasons: you are rude, nasty, arrogant, a bully, a racist, a troll, an idiot. Of course if you think I've misjudged you and you care to clarify, find a way to talk to me. I do not rule out the possibility of changing my mind. Otherwise, let's just go our separate ways. Don’t make posts based on my content, don’t reblog or share or talk about anything I posted. It wouldn’t be cool and also it’s against Tumblr rules. So, ignore me as I ignore you. And yeah I know that being rude, nasty, etc it’s very likely that you won’t do this, rather you’ll make a stupid post to insult me behind my back (yes, this has happened as well) but, well, I have to try...

- words on internet may be easily misunderstood (and in my case it can be even easier because English is not my language). If you feel that I have somehow insulted you, before you get angry, try asking me for clarification. Maybe you were wrong.

Now THIS is a great question!

In fact, it was a very timely question for a couple of reasons:

My wife and I are in the process of starting a new travel blog (check it out at FlatlandersIn.com if you like travel tips and photos).

When I received the question, we were just getting ready to take our family on a trip to Iceland and we had planned on posting a bunch of the photos on the @FlatlandersIn Instagram account.

Since the goal of the trip was to share our adventure and grow the following of the account, hashtags were definitely part of the process.

As you can see, hashtags and hashtag groups are an important part of exposing our content to a larger audience beyond our current followers.

Why Are Hashtags So Important To Instagram Success?

Like it or not, if you want to grow an audience on Instagram the right way (meaning NO buying of followers or skeevey follow/unfollow schemes), then you need to understand the important role that hashtags play.

While many people like to simply view the photos/stories in their feed of the accounts they follow, others really like to follow topics. As an example, I like to follow photos of topics like:

#Nature – https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/nature/

#Outdoors – https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/outdoors/

#Hiking – https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/hiking/

#Photography – https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/photography/

#Travel – https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/travel/

When I search for any of those terms in the Instagram app, I can also view the most popular photos that use the hashtag, as well as the most recent photos. Additionally, I can follow the entire hashtag, which means that those photos that include the hashtag in their caption will also get included in my feed.

By searching for the “Photography” hashtag on Instagram, you can click the “Follow” button and photos posted with this tag will appear in your feed.

Cool, right?

That means, if you post your amazing photo of a hike and also include the #hiking hashtag, then your photo has the chance of showing up in the feed of anyone who is following the #hiking hashtag.

That means more exposure for your photo beyond just your followers.

NOTE: If your Instagram account is private, then hashtags won’t really expand your reach at all. Since your account is private, the photos will only be shown to the people who you have allowed to follow you. If you want to expand your following and the reach of your photos, make your Instagram account public.

Going Beyond The Hashtag To Harness The Power Of The Hashtag Group

The idea of using groups of hashtags kicks the concept of hashtag reach into overdrive. Rather than using just one or two hashtags, you can use a group of up to 30 hashtags in a single post to reach a broad range of potential viewers and possibly attract them to like your content or follow your account.

By incorporating more than one hashtag into each of your posts, you exponentially increase your potential reach and engagement.

As an example, if you were hiking while on vacation in Iceland, you might want to also include hashtags like:

Well, it sounds cool until you have to type in 30 different hashtags every time you want to create a post.

One of the best parts of Instagram is how quickly you can publish your photos. Snap a pic, frame it properly, add a filter, add a caption…Boom! Published.

Having to type in 30 different hashtags can take quite a while, and add a bunch of extra work.

…And That’s Why We Save Instagram Hashtag Groups

So, let’s make this easier. Imagine that this is our hashtag group about hiking in Iceland:

It would suck to have to type all 30 of those hashtags every time you posted a photo. Yuck!

It would be so much easier if you could just flip over to an app where you had saved the hashtags and that’s why we need a solution that allows us to type the hashtags once and then copy/paste them into an app for saving and re-use.

Here’s the cool thing…you probably already have the app on your phone!

The Simple And Free Way To Save Hashtag Groups On Your Mobile Device

As my wife and I were planning our recent trip to Iceland, I knew that we would be posting a lot of photos to the @FlatlandersIn Instagram account and since we’re in the growth phase of the blog and the corresponding social media accounts, hash-tagging would definitely help us attract visitors and potential followers.

In preparation for the trip, I researched quite a few popular hashtags and created a group that I could re-use and customize for each photo.

NOTE: It’s important that you don’t just copy/paste the same hashtags over and over, as the Instagram algorithm can view that as spamming. Instead, what you want to do is leverage your hashtag group and customize it slightly for each photo. More on that in a few, but wanted to give you a quick heads-up that it’s important!

Once I had the hashtag group identified, I simply typed them into an email called “Good Iceland Hashtags” and emailed it to myself. Then, throughout the trip, I simply switched over to Gmail, searched for the email, and copied/pasted the hashtags into my Instagram post.

Send your Instagram hashtag group to yourself as a Gmail message. That way, you can easily find it and copy/paste the hashtag group into your photo caption.

Super-simple, right?

Hey, sometimes we don’t need another app installed on our phone. We don’t need a complex solution. We just need something simple and the Gmail solution worked for me throughout my Iceland trip.

What makes it even better is I forwarded the email to my wife in case she wanted to use the hashtag group for her personal Instagram photos. So the solution is simple, functional, and shareable.

Not sure I could ask for anything better.

A Note On Customizing The Hashtag Group For Better Targeting

As I mentioned in the note above, you want to make sure you customize each hashtag group before you post a photo to Instagram. This ensures that the caption/tags are customized and Instagram doesn’t view you as hash-spamming (I don’t think that’s a real word…but you get what I mean).

Trust me, the last thing you want to do is get your account banned by Instagram. Trust me, getting in contact with Instagram is not easy and you don’t want to deal with unblocking your account in the middle of your vacation.

Trust me, I have been through the whole ordeal of having an Instagram account blocked. You don’t want any part of that, so customize your hashtags so you don’t appear to be spamming.

So, let’s go back to that amazing image of your hike. Let’s assume that your hike is in Iceland and you are using the hashtag group above. What if the hike was also to a secluded beach? What if that secluded beach also had a hidden cave and an overhead waterfall with an amazing pirate-like cove? Wouldn’t it be great to include hashtags that also featured those elements?

What you want to do is paste your hashtag group into your post and then customize it to include those elements. Maybe something that looks like this:

#hiking #outdoors #nature #photography #travel #ilovetravel #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #beach #cave #cove #waterfall #hiddenplaces

NOTE: Remember, you are limited to 30 hashtags in your post, so if your hashtag group already has 30 items, you’re going to have to delete a few in order to fit your new, tailored hashtags into the post.

So, with the custom hashtags, maybe your new hashtag group looks something like this:

Still at 30 hashtags, and now I have some custom items that will keep Instagram happy.

One Important Note Before Pressing The “Post” Button In Instagram

One very important step to take before you press that “Post” button is to long-press your photo caption and click the “Select All” and then “Copy” link. This copies your entire photo caption and the hashtags to the memory of your phone.

Be sure to select and copy your entire Instagram description before you post it. This way, if something goes wrong you don’t have to do all the work again.

Once you have copied the caption, then click the “Post” button.

The reason for this is because if Instagram doesn’t like your caption, or you maybe miscounted and have 31 hashtags then Instagram will go ahead and post the photo without any description.

Yep…all that hard work to come up with a catchy caption and add your hashtags will go out the window.

Since you were smart and copied the caption to the clipboard on your phone, though, you can easily edit your photo and paste it back in and make any edits to get it back in-line with Instagram requirements.

Creating A Library Of Reusable Hashtag Groups For Future Use

The Gmail solution is a great one for most folks, but as I think about our upcoming trips, I wanted to create a library of hashtags that I could refer back to easily. When we return to Iceland in a couple of years, I want to be able to re-use that hashtag group without having to dig through Gmail.

Sure Gmail search is pretty amazing, but I want to create a place where I create a mini-library of these hashtag groups. The solutions that I’m going to try on our next trip are:

A folder on Dropbox that includes text files for each destination. So, I might create a folder called “Hashtag Groups” and then a sub-folder called “Iceland”. Inside the Iceland fold would be text files for any hashtag groups I’d like to use. This solution is appealing to me because I can share that Dropbox folder with my wife and she can access it on her mobile device, as well.

Using the Notes app on my Samsung Galaxy. It’s a nice app that allows me to create simple notes and would work well, but it wouldn’t be shareable like the Dropbox approach.

5 tips for scheduling YouTube videos

1. Include a descriptive video title

This is important because it’s the first thing your audience sees when they find your video—and it’s great for SEO too. You want to grab your audience’s attention while also taking keywords into consideration. Here’s how to create a great video title:

Tell the viewer why they need to watch. Like a headline on a blog post, your title is a promise to the viewer, so tell them how they will benefit by viewing your content. Grab their attention by emphasising the value of your video.

Keep it simple. Don’t make them work hard to understand what your video is about. Keep titles short and to the point. And because Google truncates page titles at 66 characters, anything beyond that will be cut off in the search results anyway—so make those 66 characters count.

Do keyword research. Use a tool like Google Adwords Keyword Planner to nail down a couple of relevant keyword phrases to include in your title. This will help your video rank higher in search results.

Search YouTube. An easy way to find relevant titles is to start typing the words you are thinking of using into the YouTube search bar. Experiment a little and try out other words too. YouTube auto-fills the search bar, so this reveals what audiences are actually searching for, which can give you a better insight into how to write a winning title. Work backwards. Not sure what keywords you want to rank for? Consider this: if someone wanted to find a video like yours, what words and phrases would they use to find it? Those are your keywords.

Include as much information as possible. The algorithm takes a lot into consideration when compiling search results, so include as much information as possible. In addition to your keywords, use concise image file names and meta descriptions.

3. Promote and share your videos across other social networks

Here’s the easiest way to do it using Hootsuite:

When a video has been published, a pop-up appears containing an embed code you can insert onto your website. The pop-up also includes the YouTube video’s URL. Simply click Share via Hootsuite and insert the video URL into the Compose Message box. Click Send Now.

I’m continuing my Behind The Blog series and today I’ll show exactly what I do before and after I post on my fave social media platform, Instagram.

You’ve already had a peek at how I take my hair tutorial photos with my feet, but taking a daily hair shot is a little different.

Instagram has totally changed over the last few years. It’s always been my favourite platform because I’m such a visual person, but whenever the algorithm changes, it’s a bit of a pain. These days there’s nothing instant about Instagram anymore. I try and post daily hair photos, but lately I love sharing other hairstyles I’m being inspired by and pics from my tutorials.

The quality of Instagram images has also lifted its game and this means I rarely take photos with my phone and upload them directly. I prefer to take my photos with my camera (I use this one) and edit them before I publish. Here’s a video to show you exactly what I do.

Who takes my photos?

I do!

Sometimes I can make Jim play Instagram husband but it’s just as easy to set up my tripod.

If I’m not shooting a tutorial, there’s no need to connect up my laptop and use the foot pedal. The Olympus Share app turns my phone into a remote control that also has Live View.

Fun fact: My signature “Hair Romance” pose where I’m looking slightly down started because that was where my laptop sat on top of a barstool. The same pose still works pretty well when I take a photo with my phone.

I use my Olympus E-M5 MK II camera’s WIFI to transfer the photos from the Olympus Share App to my phone’s camera roll and then use some third-party apps to edit them before posting.

How I edit my photos

Back in the early days, we would use so many filters and borders (#nashville), but now I don’t edit my photos much with the functions on Instagram.

The Olympus app has some filters and makes it easy to watermark photos too.

I always use Snapseed as my go-to editing app. It can seem complicated, but I love these features:

Healing brush – to tidy up backgrounds

Crop tool – either classic square or 5×4 portrait are ideal for Instagram

Transform – to straighten the horizon or shift the perspective a little

Tune Image – general edits like brightness and shadows (Insta can never be bright enough!)

Selective – edit detailed sections to give more definition

Once I’m done, I save it as a new image and head over to Instagram.

To filter or not to filter

My favourite Instagram filters are Clarendon, Lark and Juno, but I rarely use them at 100%. I drop the strength down to around 10-20% just to add that Insta feel.

Caption this

I always have the intention of adding in a witty caption, but I can never think anything. I swear I’m funnier in real life! I do like to ask a question or get an opinion though, as the conversation is the best part.

#Hashtag strategy

Hashtags are important if you want people to find your photos. You can currently include up to 30 hashtags in a caption. However, instead of including them up front in the caption, I prefer to pop them in the second comment.

I keep a list on my notes app (saves time typing them all out!) and I just copy paste them in a comment below the caption.
