I. FINISHED. COLD STEEL IV. (And then slept for 14 hours due to the utter sleep deprivation this required)

it is the feeling of having finished a really good book series. I need more of this, but not fanfic, because it is perfect. Even the normal (aka not true) ending was perfect. I just need more of it. Reverie doesn't come out for another 4 months 😭

We could honestly debate if going through that heartbreak again is a reason to replay or not to replay the game. All in all its quite painful and frankly sometimes even slightly annoying to deal with those two in this situation, given how we obviously actually do still love each other. However, if you reach the final bonding event, it also feels quiet rewarding to go through this breakup. And if there is one thing every shipper in this world knows, then that shipping is sometimes painful as well. (Its a bit like the way Yuna from FF10 described her feeling for Tidus. Its wonderful... but sometimes it also hurts. Basically proving that shipping is basically falling in love with their love.) But the pain is fine, if at the end of the day it brings you more joy then pain. Aaaaaand ultimately it does. So... here we go again.

A lot of people call Alisa egoistic for this. She broke up with Rean, because she couldn’t handle the fact that her whole family was partly responsible for Reans situation as well as the death of dear friends and comrades. It was just too much for her to deal with this situation and so far she had always relied way too much on Rean when she was down (which was fine with him, but one has to see that his own situation has worsened dramatically and we saw in the bathroom-scene that he is still putting her feelings before his and that won’t do in this situation) and now without Sharon, she would be inclined to do so even more and she knows he would let her, even tho he has his own problems to deal with which - once again - aren’t completely disconnected from her own family. Keeping Rean close, would have meant burdening him with Alisas feelings of guilt and helplessness and frustration and it would not have helped at all with Alisas feelings of not being independent enough. So this step was as much for her as it was for him. So he could focus more in his probless and would focus less on hers and supporting her. We’ve seen in CS3 that Rean was totally out of it after meeting Azure Siegfried for the first time, just knowing in his heart that it was Crow who was supposed to be dead and yet, when he noticed Alisas state of confusion upon hearing her fathers voice, he immediately turned towards her and put her feelings and situation first. That is how Rean is, that is what he does. But it wouldn’t be right this time not with what he has on his plate and not with Alisa having to prove that she can do things on her own. Sharon told Rean about her past because she knew he would be there for Alisa when the time came to face the truth and it hurt Alisa because she wanted Sharon to believe that she could tell it to Alisa herself without needing someone to keep her from breaking apart. So once again, this is a decision for both of them, not just herself.

Alisa always had the upper hand when it came to Rean, despite having about a dozent rivals. Her relationship with Rean progressed much faster then the relationships he had with the others girls and Alisa and Rean became much closer in a much shorter amount of time too because of that. In Cold Steel 4 on first glance, it looks like Alisa finally loses her hold on Rean, given how she ended up having her bonding events about breaking up and then coming back together after a quite painful in between time. While the other girls get their first kisses and the likes of that in their bonding events. HOWEVER, in CS4 the other girl finally get their chance to actually confess to Rean, with him getting the option to dodge the bullet, if he wanted to. But with Alisa, we are so far past that already that the only thing that those two haven’t experienced yet that wouldn’t ruin the Harem, was actually breaking up. We are 3 kisses and two confession and multiple (partly) canon-hugs into this relationship. Alisa didn’t need to prove that she could bring Rean back to his senses with a passionate kiss and as we already been in a relationship since the end of CS3 there was no confession to be made either. And any step further into that relationship would have made Rean look even more like a darn cheater, if he would have still have continued to have bonding events with the other girls despite being even deeper in his relationship with Alisa. So the only option was a breakup and funny enough THIS is the only ship were this would have worked, not just because they were the only ones already dating at this point, but because of the way their relationship is.

Rean, despite being what he is and doing what he does, is mostly a quite passive part in his relationships with the other girls. Which is why, we have kisses and love confessions with those girls that could lead to nowhere if that is what the player wanted. However with Alisa Rean has always been active. Openly confessing not minding her sitting in his lap in CS2, admitting that her beauty overwhelmed him when he students were around and actually being the one putting his arm around her in their bonding event in CS3. No even mentioning a few more other partly canon-occasions. In any other breakup-situation with another girl, Rean might have been sad but it would have ended there. With Alisa, we see Rean actively perusing Alisa, saying he want to go back to were they were and actually running to her in the final bonding event. While the other girls have to chase and pursued Rean instead of getting chased and pursued by him, like Alisa does. So why this looks like a loss for any Rean x Alisa shipper at first, this is actually yet another great victory. (Albeit a painful one XD)

You know that the song that plays in the background in this scene is from the first game, when Rean and Alisa were talking under the Nightsky in Nord? I didn’t recognize the song at first because back then it didn’t feel as sad and painful as it does here ^^’ (Also... look at Reans face and eyes. My poor baby is in pain. Mommy will get you back together my boy, I promise.)

In all honesty? I never considered actually dealing with Cody and Kaela again in Kuro until we actually met them there. I thought there storys ended in CS4, especially with then announcing that Rocksmith lost the election and would get replaced. BUT one lesson one should learn about the Trails-Saga is that you never met someone just once XD

I know that this was supposed to sound funny and weird at the same time, but I seriously sometimes wonder who comes up with the names they use in the game. Because while we have mostly beautiful names, we also have some weird ones and lets not forget the fact that they use a lot of german words for the names of hotels and stuff. I would just love to know who comes up with that stuff and why. After all... some names do have a meaning. Especially if you take a look at Trails in the Sky XD

You know, from Titas perspective, she didn’t know were Agate was and what he was doing either. Given the circumstances, he might as well could have been kicked out of the Empire and thus unable to come and save her. Not that there should have been really any doubt in her mind that he wouldn't turn heaven into hell if necessary to come and get her, but it would have taken considerably longer and would have been much more dangerous and you know how concerned Tita always is about Agates safety.

Oh boy... I am going to see that A LOT from now on. Urg. I better finish this chapter FAST.

Now that I think about it... I believe Titas and Agate have hugged more times in 4 games than Rean and Alisa have and that has to mean something. Something the western-fandom hates and I love XD

This moment is absolutely worth replaying this game as a shipper. Because Agate has used the “I promised Titas family to protect her” - excuse time and time again and it was getting almost as annoying as the Sister-Zoning-Excuse but here FINALLY he admits that this excuse is worth shit because he would protect and safe Tita no matter what - which is because she means the world to him. Which is a great step in the right direction for Agate and this ship.

Alfin freaking deserved that moment! She is by no means weak, but she gets used as a damsel in distress for the plot A LOT. But this is the worst situation she has ever been in, because while being kidnapped and drugged and held hostage and what not was surely not easy, at least all of those times she knew the people who loved here were out there, trying to save her. This time, her father was shot, her mother in protective custody, her brother on the wrong end of the battlefield and Rean had been in an unknown dangerous state in an unknown dangerous location and to top that off, Alfin also had been separated from her very best friend Elise. She deserves all the freaking hugs from our Ashen Chevallier he is willing to give her.

And with this. FINALLY I have two of my most precious princesses back. My blond Angels are only missing one more prince who is currently playing dead. But we will get there eventually.

Our next curse of action will be me showing you the only reason I would bring Musse to a hotspring-date with Rean. But not now. I need a break.

I... there’s no way they’re all really dead, right? This series has been completely toothless about killing anyone who isn’t a villain until now, no way they’re permanently killing someone who’s been here since practically day 1, no way. Show me a body

And even then I’ll doubt it with all these revivals happening all over the place

Ben Diskin did not need to go so hard on the voice acting at Millium’s death he did not need to do that to me

My god when Angie drove into the graveyard and my PS4 popped up a little notification telling me it was a blocked scene, the tension in me... and I never saw that coming, I’ll have to see if it was foreshadowed at all by replaying CS1 and 2 some time

I saw Lughman being a baddie a mile away (a mysterious professor turning out to be evil in a Trails game? UNPRECEDENTED!) but he’s Alisa’s dad!?

Neat writing trick actually, since they probably knew we’d guess the former, they blindside us with the latter

I can’t express how happy it made me that the Rufus battle was Machias Jusis Elliot. My dream team!

Estelle and Joshua got mentioned so much I figured they’d make a surprise appearance at the end and save the day

So. Characters:

Rean: Rean is once again moderately more interesting than he was before, but still the least interesting person in the game. I guess he’s got some guilt that’s actually justified now, that’s cool? 

I ship him with Crow, not because the pairing really appeals to me that much, but because being shipped with Crow would totally piss Rean off and I find that extremely funny

His relationship with Altina is the best relationship he’s ever had with a female character and it is 100% because she’s the only girl he’s never ship teased with

(I don’t have an issue with the concept of ship tease itself, I have an issue with Rean-ship tease because 1. I still truly do not understand why so many girls like him so much and 2. None of it will ever canonically go anywhere)

(Seriously I’m so tempted to write a breakdown of why every other guy in Erebonia is more desirable than Rean)

Juna: I like Juna. I realised early on that she and Kurt remind me of Estelle and Joshua, without being carbon copies, and that’s good. I also think her relationship with Rean was really interesting - ‘I don’t know how to feel about you because you saved my life, but it also wouldn’t have needed saving if it weren’t for your country’s actions, which you’ve played a major role in - but now I’m being forced to confront that you’re a human being too’ is a really complicated situation for her. It’s a lot more interesting than ‘I don’t like you because you accidentally got a face full of chest’, Alisa

I also really liked using her, I ended up loading her with the Platinum Pecky Medal and defensive stuff, and she was a wall, she took an S-craft from Arianrhod in her stride! My buff girl!

She should’ve just been the new protagonist ngl

Kurt: Kurt had a lot to live up to, seeing as his brother is my favourite minor character. And oh does he succeed, Kurt is my favourite of New VII, he’s a good straight man, he’s great in battle, I like his arc, I like his friendship with Juna, I like Kurt

Altina: I was not sure about Altina just... being a student now. But damn if she didn’t have the best character arc in the game. I only did her final bonding event on a whim, but it’s the best one I saw. My girl Allie deserves the damn world

I really, truly believe those three have a bond as well, they’re very well written as a group. This was a problem I had with Old VII, the fact that so many of them just... didn’t have relationships with each other. How do, say, Fie and Machias feel about each other? I have no idea. But this group has a fantastic dynamic and it makes that ending so much more effective

It’s like I praised Crossbell for, really - having a small core group is much more manageable in terms of giving them all equal screen time and getting me to care about them

Musse: Uh, kind of one-note and annoying, honestly. I don’t hate her or anything, but like... she’s either Being Mysterious or Hitting On Her Teacher (I hate it I hate it so much). It’s just hard to care about someone who’s clearly so fake, I guess? I’m definitely interested in her, but like... I don’t really like her

Ash: Poor boy. I thought Ash was such an interesting character (and man do I love having someone around who does not like Rean, and never really changes his mind about it). Ash is very well done imo

Alisa: Alisa is good when the issue is her family drama, and is so goddamn boring when it comes to Rean. Nothing new there

Elliot: I love his little ponytail I love it he’s so cute I want to hug him so bad

Laura: Winner of the ‘best new outfit’ award (was never that fond of her war outfit, but this one is perfect). Still good, but not notably so. I feel so bad for Laura, she tries so hard to matter, but she’s by far the character you’d have the easiest time lifting out of the game

And while I love Elliot... same situation really. You could go back to the start and have one character named Elliaura who likes swords and music and has two big-shot dads, and you wouldn’t lose much

Machias: Took down Rufus, yeah, destroy your best friend (boyfriend)’s evil family! Winner of the ‘worst new outfit’ award, AGAIN. Also winner of ‘dorkiest S-craft’. I did his final bonding event first, and according to Playstation trophies it’s the least popular one! Stop sleeping on my boy Machias guys, I know he was annoying in the first game but I love him :(

Gaius: Special award to Gaius for finally being interesting! Boy’s a Gralsritter now, did not see that coming!

And of course it happened off screen. Because god forbid interesting stuff happen to Gaius when we’re actually around

Oh also goddamn, that is a beautiful man

Emma: Don’t really like the new outfit. It’s kind of remarkable that she’s so important but I keep forgetting she exists. Exposition witch who sometimes just doesn’t deliver the exposition I guess

Fie: Still my fav girl. Wish there had been more focus on her feelings about her dad coming back to life. Like that she’s a bracer

Jusis: Wasn’t sure how to feel about his newly close friendship with Millium because I was concerned that I was meant to ship it (by far my least favourite thing about this franchise is that that was not an unreasonable concern, as it wouldn’t even be the most inappropriate relationship in this game alone). Very, very glad it was confirmed sibling-y (not that it’s stopped them before). He didn’t really get to do anything else, sadly, but he’s good as always

I did the Purebread contest with him, and he made bread from coffee beans Machias gave him, the Ferdibert Fire Emblem energy-

My kids Tita and Agate are back and completely overshadowed by people teasing this almost 30-year old man about being in love with a 17 year old that he’s only ever claimed to see as a sister, I swear to god

Michael’s fine, I guess? He’s kind of bland but I guess that’s kind of the point and I like him just fine. He serves his purpose well

I’ve never really liked Claire all that much, but she’s fine in this one again I suppose. A bit disappointed by the Lechter reveals really, I had expected more, to be honest

Aurelia is a fun character and I enjoy her as the principal. Want to see her fight Cassius

I love my girl Annabelle, but she’s the only reason I didn’t get all the character profiles (how was I meant to know I could even go to the highway at that point hmmm Falcom!?)

They picked a good selection of returning Thors students. Even Dorothee isn’t as annoying as she used to be. Hilarious that she’s the only one who didn’t get a profile

Juna gave a great big speech about how awesome the SSS are and namedrops everyone EXCEPT WAZY! My FAVOURITE Crossbell character! So offensive!

Oh speaking of offensive I took Machias to the Mishy show and was told he and Rean did a Mishy dance but they didn’t show it, what the hell-

Playable Olivier! Olivier back story! I could write a goddamn essay on why Olivier is such a great character. Glaring at you Falcom

Ada Grant is wonderful and I want better things for her

Rufus is a damn great villain just because of how much sense his actions suddenly make when you know that one little detail of him not actually being Jusis’s brother

I hate Cedric but like, in a way where I’m having fun hating him. That little bitch

I still cannot stand Elise. Something I realised playing this game is that one of the things that stops the Estelle and Joshua relationship from being as weird as it could be is that they don’t look at all alike, it’s very clear they’re not related in the slightest. Elise and Rean look like they really could be siblings, and come to think, so do Lloyd and Cecile. Which is also teased, to a lesser extent. It would be so much less uncomfortable if they just swapped Elise and Alfin’s models ngl (though still not good)

inb4 the final plot twist of the whole series is that Estelle and Joshua actually were biological siblings all along

This game looks so much better than its predecessors. Having the models being a little rounder and softer looking makes it look much more like an updated version of the original style than the complete departure that was CS1 and 2. Every time there was a flashback, Rean would be like ‘back then...’ and I’d feel compelled to say out loud ‘when we were shiny, and looked bad!’

‘Evil ancient magic corrupts people into making them do bad things!’ is... honestly a bit of a cop out that I did not expect from this series 

I found Rean telling Patrick ‘leave room for Aidios when dancing with my sister’ extremely funny. Rean would totally be a Christian summer camp counsellor in the real world

I honestly would have enjoyed it a lot more if Alfin decided to cause a scandal and have her first dance with Elise, but we can’t have such luxuries I suppose

When you get that book on dystopias, very clever to put the author on the last page. Seeing the name Gideon gave me such a start

Racquel was easily my fav new location

Leeves > Trista no doubt, maybe I’m just biased because it looks a lot like the village I grew up in but it’s just such a nicer design

Also the branch campus > main campus purely for being smaller, making the filler segments between field trips more bearable 

I prefer the longer but fewer chapters set-up, I think

There’s so many sad faces in this write up :( 

Back when I played Sky SC, I said something about how one of the themes is ‘you are not defined by your trauma’. I now think it would be more accurate to say that the theme of all the games (but especially the Sky arc) is ‘don’t let your worst experiences define you’

Because there are characters who define themselves by their traumas and worst experiences - and those characters are all villains, or miserable, or both. Like, they don’t phrase it as such, but the requirement to be an Ouroboros enforcer is ‘have trauma and define yourself by it’

And both Joshua and Renne’s arcs are about learning not to do that

Equally, the idea that ‘it’s much easier to not to define yourself by your trauma when you have a good support system that wants the best for you’ is a big theme as well

I just think that’s a really interesting idea for a JRPG series to tackle, idk

So... Alisa owns Rean?

Ah... time spend on YouTube is never boring, I can tell you XD It always motivates me to write something I need to get out of my system. This time, lets talk about my favorite Trails-Game-Ship. Rean and Alisa.

So basically, someone posted the scene from CS4, were Musse is revealing she will be Reans new “arm-piece” for the upcoming day and swoons how it will be “just the two of them” (and 4 more people, as Juna added XD) and how Alisa immediately starts to activate “the glare” and tells Rean to watch himself, like REALLY watch himself. Someone commented: “That is why I hate Alisa. She acts like she owns Rean and that ever since the Claire-Incident in Roer in CS1!”

So lets dive into that, shall we?

First of all, the reason Alisa acts like she owns Rean, is because she actually does. At least, if you take Reans behavior into account. And as this is about him, we should do that.

Lets take a moment to recap the Roer situation: Rean and Alisa had a heart to heart and it ended with Alisa warning him that if he behaves likes he does with her toward every girl, it might lead to misunderstanding - fool he is, Rean acts like he got it, but he obviously didn’t. Alisa just left the scene when his phone ran and Claire asked for a meeting, in secret, especially a secret from Alisa.

Now Claire tells Rean to keep it a secret from her, because the informations she wants to exchange with Rean are about Reinford. However, as it is no big deal whatsoever when our oblivious player actually tells Alisa and everyone else basically right afterwards anyway, its pretty easy to see that this was just Falcom setting up the jealousy-scene.

Now here is the thing with Reans relationship with Alisa and his relationship with Claire. Alisas and Reans bond has developed a lot faster and more intensely then Reans relationship with anyone else but Crow (*rolles her eyes at the fangirl in the background screaming*) and so semi-romantic-scenes between Alisa and Rean in Cold Steel one are not (solely) hidden in the optional bonding-events but in the canon-scriped-ground. Meaning that Falcom take more advantage of any development in those scenes, then they can do with optional-bonding-events that some player might not have seen. Which is part of the reason why Alisa and Reans relationship is deeper in all games but Hajimari (and even there, with a closer look, you could argue that it still is like that) and thus, it was obvious already at this point were this was supposed to go. HOWEVER compared then a bit later in the game, we just weren’t there yet. Now Claire has been interesting to Rean ever since they first met. I think he was seriously attracted to her and fascinated by how cool, calm and collected but also passionate she was with her job. However, Claire was at this point still stuck figuring out if she likes him like a man or like a boy who is a bit like her dead brother. Also, we know that Claire mentioned she saw through the connection between Rean and Osborne and its likely that also drew her towards Rean, even tho she was probably not sure why at this point.

Something that is clear in the scene when Rean actually meets with Claire is that he is absolutely smitten by how she looked in that cocktail-dress. But other then that, do to many circumstances (including Fie being there as the third wheel) there wasn’t much more in this scene aside from the information exchange and some staring on Reans side and Claire getting softer.

Regardless of that, Alisa was furious when she found out. Not helping was likely Sharon (who caught Rean sneaking out and made it sound like he was sneaking out to have sex with some pretty stranger or something like that XD) who was likely making a bigger deal then necessary out of it, when she told Alisa or Fie who as the third wheel could have confirmed that it wasn’t really a date and that nothing worth of note was happening, but decided instead to make it a point that Rean was totally into Claire in her pretty dress.

Now that scene mostly served a comedic purpose for obvious reasons. The best indicator is Machias infamous “You lucky son of bi- I mean shame on you Rean!” while Crow is in the background, enjoying his traitor self far too much with making comments like “It looks like a sunny day, but I think it will be a stormy day” or something along the lines of that.

However, even I was bothered by the scene even tho I love Alisa and I absolutely love every shipping moment between her and Rean - and it was not like I wasn’t enjoying that scene, to be completely honest, BUT it is true, that at this point in the game, Alisa had no right whatsoever to actually act like the jealous girlfriend because she was not his girlfriend yet nor was she close enough to it then that she was in a position to feel like she had the right to play the jealous girlfriend. I agree with that part.

The thing is just... Rean, the man in questions and the person who at the end of the day decided if Alisas reaction was alright or not, was pretty much doing NOTHING to make it look like Alisa doesn’t own him at that point. Instead of calmly explaining the situation and making it a point that Alisa had no right nor reason to be jealous, making it clear that even if he had an actual date with Claire, Alisa was not in the right to react like that. What he actually did was the exact opposite. He acted like the boyfriend who had been caught cheating, trying to get on Alisas good site again, even apologizing. Almost begging for forgiveness.

Ladys and Gentleman, I am sorry I have to break it to you, but in this very moment it was Reans very own decision to be owned by Alisa. And you can not blame her for keeping that up, after he basically had no objections against it, more so, gave her the feeling she was in the right. Who are we to question that?

Going back to the scene from CS4 with Musse, a lot of people complained that Alisa had been still quite possessive of Rean, despite their breakup. And I agree. BUT think about it, she didn’t break up because she didn’t love him, she also never said she wanted to give up on him AND to top it off, neither was Rean willing to have any of that, which is pretty easy to see if you follow the boding events and beyond even that final boding event. And that aside... old habits die hard, don’t they?

The reason Rean and Alisa broke up in CS4, was because their relationship was too far developed at this point. We had them kiss in CS2 already and finishing the deal with another kiss in CS3. We all know what the next step would have been, but with the Harem still being available until the final bonding event, Falcom needed to do something to keep those two in a cage for a bit longer and the easiest way was to give them something Rean couldn’t have with any other girl of his harem and that was a breakup AND this breakup also gives Alisa something only she got and that was the fact that Rean was chasing after her, actively pursuing her, initiating things and being the one who comes running to her in the final bonding event. No one else had Rean being the one approaching and pushing things. I mean, I did Alfins events and she literally revealed her feelings to Rean in her very first CS4 bonding event and yet, in the second event, we only deal with the Cedric-Issue. Granted, we get a cute hug and all BUT Rean had ALWAYS been supportive of Alfin and she had gotten quite a few hugs over the curse of time (I think she almost tops Alisa there, with the canon-ones) and that means that when you look at it, despite Alfin revealing her feelings, almost nothing has changed between them. Now look at Rean and Alisa after their breakup. All the painful awkward moments until we FINALLY get the second bonding event in which it is Rean himself who says he has not giving up on them yet.

And with that said... trust me, Alisa owns the man.

All that aside... I seriously want to make a list with my favorite Alisa and Rean moments from Cold Steel one to Hajimari. But I wouldn’t even know where to begin XD There are big ones, like the CS3 reunion and multiple scenes afterwards that no other old Class7 girl can match. And there are small ones like Reans “I am falling for you all over again” line close to the end of CS4, if you have done her final bonding event. The is the fact that Rean CONSTANTLY favors Alisa when mentioning the people stuck in Crossbell in Hajimari. Did I mention Alisa is the only one getting a kiss in CS2? (She actually gets two ;P) Alisa is the only old class7 Member that Rean is canonically dancing with in CS3 and with this, if you danced with her in CS1, she is the only one you can dance with twice during the Cold Steel Saga. One of the first scenes of the Cold Steel Saga is Rean and Alisas picture perfect meeting under the blooming linoflowers. The Teleporting-Spell in Hajimari transported Alisa and Rean right next to each other after the final battle, even tho they were standing quite a few meters away when they were teleported and to top it off, Alisa is so close to Rean in that scene, that you can barley see her next to him. The scene in North under the Nighsky is rivaling the scene between Eli and Lloyd in the Crossbell-Saga. While on the other hand Elis and Lloyd reunion in Hajimari is rivaling the one of Alisa and Rean in CS3 AND we all know, despite Falcom not having the guts to go through with it officially, that they said in an interview that Eli and Lloyd are closer then ever. So... you get what I mean, right? Alisas and Reans outfits usually complement each other. Even in CS4, they are still using the same colorpattern. Rean and Alisas Link-Event in CS4 shows them holding hand in the final arc no matter if you chose Alisa as your final bond or not. (Falcom literally giving any other ship the middle-finger and I love them for it XD) Okay. Lets not continue this, or this will get even longer.

However, expect me to write about Tita and Agate at some point, just to piss off all the haters while I show you why I think this ship is sailing.

Anyone want to discus who Kloe is getting married to and why Falcom is teasing us like this?
