Il était si près de moi que j'aurais pu facilement le toucher. "Je pense, dis-je, que si tu m'autorisais à te toucher, je me sentirais un peu mieux. Si je pouvais seulement étendre la main!" "Mais tu ne peux pas bouger, dit l'Ange gentiment, tu es complètement désemparée et à la merci des anges de ce pays qui sont terribles."

Dominique Teufen Photographs in the Mind’s Eye

Things are not quite what they seem. For the Swiss artist, Dominique Teufen, the means by which her images are made – the technology of the Xerox photocopier, the gleaming surface of photographic paper, the pulse of light emitted by a photoflash – are as important in her work as the texture and hardness of stone is to a sculptor. These images are not only made with imagination, they invite the imaginative engagement of the viewer. It is this creative conversation that defines the very nature of art: two imaginations meeting in the art object, the one who created and the one who recreates in their own mind’s eye.
