Early days in slowly going through Kathleen Ayers's The Beautiful Barringtons series and damn, Amanda, what the hell were you thinking naming your youngest child Phaedra? Did you run out of Greek myth heroines that you resolved to stick the baby with 'horny stepmom who would do a frame-up on her underage stepkid when he wouldn't fuck her.' It's like naming your daughter Klameddia or Rapestia now. It just doesn't work, especially when Hecate, Atalanta and Selene were like right there? No wonder the kid needs more adventurous hobbies growing up.

Halifax-area wildfires caused more than $165 million in insured damage
The wildfires in the Tantallon area are estimated to have cost more than $165 million in insured damage, according to figures from the Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc.
Out-of-control wildfires that burned in the suburban area northwest of Halifax between May 28 and June 4 destroyed 151 homes, and at a peak, forced the evacuation of 16,000.
A statement from the Insurance Bureau of Canada Wednesday said about 90 per cent of the $165 million in insured damage came from personal property claims.
"The unprecedented 2023 wildfire season has devastated parts of Atlantic Canada and serves as a reminder of the increasing financial vulnerability of many Canadians due to natural catastrophes and other severe weather events,” Amanda Dean, Atlantic vice president of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, said in a statement.
“Our thoughts are with everyone whose lives have been disrupted and whose property has been damaged or totally destroyed," Dean said.
The insurance bureau did not share the estimated cost of wildfire damage in Shelburne County.
The wildfire near Barrington Lake is the largest recorded forest fire in Nova Scotia’s history, and about 150 structures in the area were destroyed — including about 60 homes and cottages.
Insured damage related to severe weather in Canada now routinely exceeds $2 billion annually, the bureau said.
With a total of $3.1 billion in insured damage from severe weather, 2022 was the third-worst year on record. By comparison, between 2001 and 2010, Canadian insurers averaged $675 million a year in losses related to severe weather.

REVIEW
The Theory of Earls by Kathleen Ayers
The Beautiful Barringtons #1
Delightful with a tinge of darkness – a romance to be savored
What I liked: * Margaret “Maggie”: synesthete who sees music in colors, daughter of a tin miner and uppercust mother, oppressed by her guardian aunt, pretending to be less than she is, aspires to have a comfortable life, wants control in a time that women didn’t have much say, sensual, intelligent, aware, a woman I wouldn’t mind having as a friend
* Welles “Tony”: one day to be Duke of Averell, hates his father, loved his mother, musically inclined, part owner of a gambling establishment, has many siblings by women other than his mother, a rake and a rogue, difficult to like (at times) and yet lovable, too.
* Leo: Tony’s best friend and half-brother, tells it like it is, likable, astute, someone I want to know more about
* Amanda: Tony’s stepmother, duchess, mother of four daughters, kind, generous, interesting
* The Barrington sisters: Andromeda, Phaedra, Theodosia – each with a talent of her own – looking forward to reading their books in the future
* Olivia: related to the Barringtons and a ward of sorts…might show up in a book of her own
* Margaret’s backbone and the way she stood up for herself…eventually
* Welle’s love for his siblings…and the way he grew through the story – would love to see him ten years in the future
* The chemistry between Tony and Maggie – they really did see one another, communicated (eventually), and have potential for the love match they both deserve
* The music tie-in
* Knowing that there are more books to look forward to in this series.
 What I didn’t like:
* Marcus – the Duke of Averell…his behavior when younger hurt more than one person though he did come around later it was too late for some that he hurt deeply
* Aunt Agatha and Lord Winthrop
* The power the ton had and thinking about how men were in control of so much back then
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to the author and IndiePenPR for the ARC – this is my honest review.
 4-5 Stars
     BLURB
“Chemise. Stockings. Piano.” Three words, uttered by the beautifully rakish Lord Welles, leave Margaret Lainscott speechless. His improper request, that she play the piano for him in her…underthings is as shocking as it is titillating. Margaret should never have asked his help in reintroducing her to Lord Carstairs. But his friend meets all of Margaret’s criteria for a husband; passably attractive, of below-average intelligence, and possessed of an obsessive outdoor hobby which will leave her free to pursue her own life. Welles is one of London’s most committed bachelors, known for his notorious dealings with women and his part ownership of one of London’s pleasure clubs. He’s long admired Miss Lainscott’s unrestrained passion at the piano; a passion he suspects is not reserved only for her music. Welles is certain Miss Lainscott will not entertain his improper request despite the attraction burning between them. A young lady such as Miss Lainscott would never ruin herself willingly. And Welles? Nothing would make him compromise his heart… Until a duet with a passionate pianist changes his mind. The Theory of Earls is a steamy, sexy regency romance with a guaranteed happily ever after and the first in a new series, The Beautiful Barringtons.

Billy Crystal plans his Broadway return in a familiar role
NEW YORK
Billy Crystal is not ready to say goodbye to “Mr Saturday Night.”
The comic icon has turned his comedy film into a Broadway-bound musical and hopes to open it next year with him reprising his film role as Buddy Young Jr, a bitter, old insult comic chasing a last laugh.
“There’s something about this guy and that world that I love,” Crystal tells The Associated Press. “I think that we’ve brought this story and this character to a better place than I could have imagined even.”
Crystal has written the stage adaptation with his film’s co-writers — Lowell Ganz and Marc “Babaloo” Mandel — and married it to music by Jason Robert Brown and lyrics by Amanda Green. John Rando will direct.
“What the music has done to elevate the story and to propel the story and bring out dynamics in the characters is quite amazing to me,” Crystal says. "It’s something I couldn’t be more excited about, honestly."
He will star opposite Tony Award-winner Randy Graff, Chasten Harmon and David Paymer, who will recreate his Oscar-nominated performance as Buddy’s brother, Stan Yankelman.
Crystal has just ended a developmental run of the show at the Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts. Performances begin on Broadway on March 1, 2022, at the Nederlander Theatre.
This is Crystal’s first return to Broadway following his “700 Sundays,” which he premiered in 2004 and revisited in 2013. For the new show, American Express members get access to tickets starting Nov. 10; to the general public on Nov. 22.
Crystal made a name for himself first in comedy, from stand-up to TV’s “Soap” to the films “When Harry Met Sally” and “City Slickers.” Then in 1992, he got serious with “Mr Saturday Night,” which he directed, co-wrote and starred in. He based the Buddy character in part on real comedians, including Alan King, Pat Cooper and Buddy Hackett.
In an interview, Crystal he recalls starting the shooting of the movie in Central Park 30 years ago at age 43 and needing six hours in the makeup chair, starting at 2 a.m.
“Now, all these years later, we don’t need the makeup,” he says. “I’m playing my own age. It’s much more freeing. It’s much more honest in a way.”
Instead of the film's use of flashbacks, Crystal will portray a man he calls “Willy Loman with laughs” in every stage of his life. “The pain and the joy and the emotion that he goes through in the film, I get to do it live in front of people and they feel it and I feel them.”

In the name of love, écrite par Kaelindy
Shore to Shore, écrite par Lanae’s World
Je m’appelle Diana Barrington, écrite par Nanthana14
Bienveillance, amour, tolérance et respect sont de mise (ainsi que le respect de la Charte habituelle) !

Spice & Barley Bangkok Riverside
Spice & Barley Riverside, Bangkok Gastro Lounge, Enter Projects Interior, Building Photos
Spice & Barley Bangkok
20 Nov 2020
Spice & Barley Riverside, Bangkok
Design: Enter Projects
Location: Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, Charoennakorn Road, Thonburi – overlooking the Chao Priya River, Bangkok, Thailand, South East Asia
Gastro Lounge serving South East Asian Cuisine by Celebrity Chef Sam Leong, paired with exclusive craft beers imported from Belgium
Size: 300 sqm space with 30m high glass façade & ceilings.
The Spice & Barley at Riverside in Bangkok installation was completed by Enter Projects Asia. Minor International were clear on their brief: to introduce innovation and eco-awareness, giving the new brand a local context – to an International design standard.
The initial concept centered around the adventures of three sisters, May, Zaza & Fei who were born in Sichuan decades earlier. As they explored the story in more depth, a design narrative was formed, connecting the past & present in a complex web of free flowing, statuesque rattan structures, as intoxicating as the characters themselves.
In their signature style, fusing 3D digital technology with traditional arts & crafts, the Enter Projects team sought to incorporate natural, renewable rattan into the 30-metre-high space. By generating free-flowing liquid geometries, to mimic beer as it’s poured into a glass, the design aesthetic gives a strong nod to Spice & Barleys anchorage as a craft Belgium Beer destination.
The sweeping rattan columns flawlessly frame the backdrop of the three sisters, a dual nod to the Sichuan cuisine which ingeniously complements the beer offering. Whilst the form itself is visually awe-inspiring, the gold painted rattan also serves to hide the beer pipes, air-conditioning and other related services, paying homage to the belief that “form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union”.
The site overlooks the Chao Priya River and the natural rattan structures act as twin towers, referencing the high rise towers in the backdrop. The vast geometries flood the ceiling in an uninterrupted balustrade of twists and turns which bounce the light and become a beacon from far away.
In keeping with the original brief, the design sensibilities at Spice and Barley are intrinsically Asian Fusion, a phenomenal marriage of ideas, creating a space in which you innately sense that the Client and Architect have understood one another perfectly.
