In a less intuitive actress's hands, this character's presence may have felt less impactful. Lange is magnetic in this part, your eyes drawing to her any time she's in frame. So much of what makes this character work is thanks to Lange's acting choices. She takes risks that pay off, intriguing the audience with both vibrancy and vulnerability in unexpected places that still feel genuine. I get excited when I see an antagonist who feels like an actual human being and can come off sympathetic without it being the narrative trying to give her an excuse for bad behavior. Constance is often guided by villainous motives, but that doesn't mean we can't root for her.
