Bathing Siberian tigress by Foto Martien The Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), also known as the Amur and the Ussuri tiger, is one of the six nowadays still living tiger subspecies. Siberian tigers are world's largest cats. They live primarily in eastern Russia's birch forests (the Sikhote Alin mountains), though some exist in northeast China and North Korea. There are an estimated 450 to 500 Siberian tigers living in the wild, and recent studies suggest that these numbers are stable. The Siberian tiger is reddish-rusty, or rusty-yellow in color, with narrow black transverse stripes. Male Siberian tigers can grow to 3.7 meters and weigh over 423 kg; females are up to 2.4 meters in length and 168 kg. This photo of the Siberian tigress 'Dasha' is made in Zoo Duisburg (Germany). De in het wild zeer zeldzame Siberische tijger (Panthera tigris altaica), ook bekend als de Amoertijger, is de grootste van de tegenwoordig nog levende zes tijgerondersoorten. Circa 450 Siberische tijgers leven in de bossen van de uitlopers van het gebergte Sichote-Alinhet en langs beide oevers van de rivieren Amoer en Oessoeri in oostelijk Rusland. Een klein aantal (maximaal 50 dieren) leeft in het noorden van de Chinese regio Mantsjoerije. Onzeker is of de ondersoort nog voorkomt in Noord-Korea. Met zijn dikke oranjebruine tot oranjegele vacht en onderhuidse vetlaag is hij goed opgewassen tegen de kou die 's winters in zijn leefgebied kan heersen. Het bruine tot zwarte strepenpatroon verschilt in aantal, dikte en vertakkingen per individu. Een mannetje kan ruim 3,50 meter lang worden (exclusief de staart van 1 meter) en weegt tot 325 kg.
