I’m reading this little how to keep house while drowning book right now and I think the entire book was worth it for her argument that “tidy” is an aesthetic value, not a moral one, and as such you do not have a moral obligation to maintain a tidy space. your space can look however you want it to as long as it is safe and functional for you.
#I was raised in a family of people who believe PASSIONATELY that extreme tidiness is a moral obligation we owe to ourselves and the world#lol#and I [trying to avoid value judgments here] am someone who uhhhhhhhhhhhhh does not and cannot maintain that standard#I also really like how she differentiates between ‘cleaning’ (endless process driven by a desire to achieve impossible perfection)#and ‘resetting the space’ which is the much simpler and more parameter-bound work of putting things back in their place
