Part VII- Free Brigade! 2013-2014
On May 16, 2013 Rob Liefeld launched a Kickstarter campaign to release a brand new ongoing Brigade series with the first issue being released for free and potential additional free issues based on the amount of raised funds. It included very fun tiers of the single issues, an eventual oversized hardcover collected edition, original art, exclusive covers, unreleased screenplays and even an actual POUCH. October 2013 was the projected release date.
The campaign reached its goal in nine days and secured “FREE BRIGADE copies to fans and retailers!” And thus began the long odyssey of this latest iteration of Brigade. Below are some of the Kickstarter updates (spelling and grammatical errors have been corrected). - - -
5/24/13- Stretch goals announced to add a, “5 page prelude that tells the comprehensive history of BRIGADE leading up to our explosive opening sequence!” and an exclusive Brigade sketchbook for backers (both stretch goals would be met).
6/4/13- Author Matt Nastos is announced as co-writer and scripter.
6/8/13- Foil logo added to all copies stretch goal announced (this stretch goal would be met) and “nearly 60,000″ copies now secured for release based on funding.
6/11/13- Free signed Extreme and Deadpool comics added to certain pledge tiers.
6/15/13- Project campaign ends and Brigade #1 is officially funded
9/19/13- “Brigade is penciled, drawn and away to inkers and colorists. As soon as the inks are returned, I'll meet with writer Matt Nastos to finalize his script. I am starting to create the many covers for this project.”
9/20/13- Free digital file announced to be sent to each buyer once the issue has been sent to the printer.
12/20/13- “I'm looking at 2 shows in the 1st quarter of 2014 to release BRIGADE!”
1/25/14- “Brigade is nearing completion. I produced too many pages for the first issue and subsequently kicked some of them to the second issue. Thank you for your patience. I'm trying to make this special and use Brigade in order to completely re-set my universe of characters.Colors have been the biggest hurdle as I've tried a number of different colorists in this book after my first choice retired a few pages in. I'll post new art this week and we should be going to press in 4-5 weeks!“
3/30/14- “New pages are arriving this week, I'll share progress pages as soon as I receive them. The book is as further along as it has been since I completed the line art.”
5/4/14- “Brigade will either be released during Las Vegas Con end of June or Comic Con in July. Those are the 2 dates I'm juggling. One or the other, printing specifics will determine.”
5/19/14- “Always wanting to keep you in the loop. Well beyond issue #1 now and intending to make both #1 and #2 available free. I'd hold off until September release if it was up to me but I can't keep you waiting that long. The reason for September would be to arrive 2 years after leaving interiors. Going away is a good thing for any artist. Cleanses the palette. Vegas is my hope, San Diego is my guarantee.”
6/28/14- “I'm writing this as I prepare to make color notes and await the mock ups on the covers to the variants for this issue. We are preparing to go to press in the next 2 weeks, hoping to have copies for comic con, if not a week or so after.”
7/9/14- “My guarantee as to Brigade's launch for Comic Con is being tested as the deadline closes in. Final files are due soon in order to hit the mark. After previous colorist delays resulted in hold ups in completing Brigade, that element of the book has been satisfied and is on track. This current hold up is 100% on me as I struggle to complete the book to my satisfaction. I have changed the book repeatedly in order to reflect different agendas. Due largely in part to the fact that this will be my first interior work in 2 years, I am hung up on releasing it into the public. Hung up in this case means another delay if I cannot push this through. I have circled 2 upcoming summer shows that would provide a great launch for this book and I will move towards those dates if comic con is out of reach. My sincere apologies, I desperately want to share this with you backers and the public at large. I believe it represents a return to the energy and spark of my previous work, it also serves as as a launch for the entire re-imagining of these characters and by extension much of my Extreme catalogue. My only priority is pleasing the fans that have supported my career and this Kickstarter project. I want this to give you maximum jolt and impact.”
8/11/14- Exclusive bonus Kickstarter-only cover announced for each backer.
10/29/14- “Received 5 more colored pages and couldn't be more thrilled. From any artist perspective, watching the work be colored and completed is an absolute thrill. My colorist updated me and said that he would start on the final batch this weekend as there was repair work on his hard drive.“
12/1/14- “I wanted to let you know that a fantastic publisher has signed on to publish Brigade. The first two issues will be released in the same month, the launch issue will be FREE and the 2nd issue will be standard comic price. You signed on to deliver FREE issues of Brigade and that is most certainly going to happen with the launch issue. I was able to deliver the colored pages from the first issue of Brigade as well as a significant portion of issue #2. The response from the publisher was incredible, exactly as I had hoped.
To be continued...
