**I based Vincent Valentine off of my rusty knowledge of the video game 'Final Fantasy VII' from 1997. As well as the movie, 'Final Fantasy: Advent Children' released in 2005. Other things here will be any headcanons & my own POV with writing this character. I am not open to critism of any kind, if I'm writing him 'wrong' to you.**

I've been in the roleplay scene since late 2012, under various blogs/fandoms. I know most of how things work & how tense some parts can be. I wish to take no part in it, be it drama, call-outs, etc. Personal affairs between others, I also stray far away from. I simply want to enjoy this hobby among friends & new comers. And though I know inc3st is something popular written in fandom, it is most definitely not something I'm going to, or even want to, write out. So, please don't pursue me under the impression that I'll write something like that with you.

The activity status of this blog will be permanently labeled as 'semi-active'. Which means, that I'll be mostly lurking rather than regularly posting or engaging for now. I will remain “flaky” in terms of staying in contact with others. The best way to talk would be discord, as I don’t have notifications for Tumblr enabled. This may change in the future, but with life as it is - Vincent Valentine's blog, or roleplay at all - won't be such a high priority of mine.

I tend to block others for a list of reasons, ranging from not wishing to be mutuals - to the very fact you're friends/heavily interact with someone who's brought me or my loved ones grief. I rather not bring personal issues to a stranger, so blocking is my go to.

i’m allison or ashtyn ( she / her ) , depends on who you ask. i’m TWENTY-TWO years old & bi af. ENGLISH is my first language. my current timezone is us / canada central , & i’m in my fifth year at university studying classics.

i am not lucy coldwater , nor am i any faceclaim used on this blog. i do not own the magicians. my character is an ORIGINAL CHARACTER who is the younger sister of QUENTIN COLDWATER. because my character is an original character , most interactions & other information found on this blog will be considered SLIGHTLY AU but will follow the canon storyline set within the television show.

INTERACTIONS & UNFOLLOWING.

as of january 2017 , this blog is considered PRIVATE & INDEPENDENT. these past few school years have been particularly stressful & time consuming , & i know as the years go by , it will only get more intense , so i have decided to limit the amount of people i am interacting with to further enjoy roleplaying & build deeper relationships between lucy & other characters.

on that note , i only roleplay with MUTUALS. this is not to discourage anyone to seek out roleplaying with me nor is this a statement on anyone else’s roleplaying skills. it is merely simpler & a better use of my time. this means any starter calls , ic memes , & open threads are for mutuals only. HOWEVER , feel free to send me any & all questions about my character , mutual or not.

personally , i prefer FORMATTED posts with corresponding edited icons , & i tend to gravitate towards others who do the same. but , i do not require nor ask that my roleplaying partner match my format. & i will roleplay with / follow people who don’t use formatting / icons / etc. i reserve the right to unfollow you without getting yelled at / hate / etc. REASONS I WILL NOT INTERACT & OR UNFOLLOW someone include but are not limited to basic grammar mistakes , untagged spoilers & nsfw content , bigotry of any kind , etc. i try to keep a positive dashboard , so i can enjoy roleplaying , but i do believe callouts are sometimes necessary when it comes to things like theft , homophobia , racism , etc. they will be tagged accordingly for everyone’s comfort , so if you prefer not to see such things , please blacklist #callout tw.

on the same note , if i do say or do something out of line when it comes in context of race / gender / sexuality , please let me know. i’m bi , but i’m still white & cis , & although i would like to say i’m well informed on these matters , i know there’s things i don’t know a lot about & somethings i’ll never completely understand because i can’t live through that experience. i’d rather be told if i’ve done something out of line & work to correct it than let it fester unchecked. i’m definitely not perfect & i know i’ve made mistakes before , which is why i’m trying to be better about creating more appropriate psds & trying to make sure i give more attention to muses of color , including my own , but i am trying to work to fix those. if you ever feel like i’m speaking over your voice on something , let me know. it’s not something i want to do.

ACTIVITY LEVEL.

with the same stance as above , i roleplay because i enjoy it. it provides me an opportunity to develop my writing skills & understand the characters i write on a deeper level. i’m currently in my fourth out of five years of university , & i just recently switched my major. what does this boil down to ? well , i probably won’t be on nearly as much as i was in high school , so don’t expect a lot of activity during the daytime , & please understand that it will take me longer to respond to longer threads. however , you can probably expect high activity between the hours of 9-12 PM US CENTRAL TIME because this is the time i have set aside to relax & focus on my writing & myself.

i do practice having mains & exclusives , simply so i can have better continuity with my partners. a full list of my mains & exclusives can be found HERE. my mains have priorities to thread & meme responses , obviously , & it should be noted that interactions with my mains are typically considered to be placed in the lucy’s canon unless otherwise stated. i will not go fully exclusive with certain characters because there are either not enough of them around or the player is only on once in a blue moon , or simply because i do not want to limit my interactions with different interpretations of said character. never hesitate to ask if you would like to become exclusive ; however , i will approach you if i would like for you to become one of my mains.

this practice will probably not take place as much on this blog due to both the small size of the vampire diaries rpc & the fact that there are so many wonderful portrayals of each character.

Let us talk about Anti- culture

I have notice a trend that has taken ahold of many fandoms throughout tumblr. The trend is now called “Anti-culture”. What I am going to do here in this post is take things that have been found throughout anti-culture and talk with you about it. I am hoping this post can reach far and bring someone some enlightenment.

The first subject I will touch on is pedophilia. I have noticed, as have many others, that people in fandoms are now using pedophilia as a buzzword and using it in terms of ships. Stop. Just stop it.

“Why should i stop using the word when it is pedophilia!?”

That’s just the thing. What most of you are calling out as pedophilia is NOT pedophilia. Pedophilia by definition is,

:sexual perversion in which children are the preferred sexual object; specifically : a psychological disorder in which an adult has sexual fantasies about or engages in sexual acts with a prepubescent child (Source: Merriam-Webster)

I’ve seen the issue that many of you are not realizing. You do not know what pedophilia truly is. You believe pedophilia is anyone OVER 18 being with anyone UNDER 18. THIS IS NOT PEDOPHILIA. Pedophilia is an adult with sexual desire for a prepubescent child.

Pedophiles are people who are sexual attracted to children that have not hit puberty or have just hit puberty. The typical age (on average) that puberty starts for girls are (8 to 13 years old). For boys it generally starts around (9 to 12 years old). This is the age range for when puberty starts for children. Girl are typically fully physically mature at age 14.

With that out of the way let us now talk about the law. Typically the laws base age for consent is 16 years old. This varies between states and countries but this is typically the base age.

: n. a voluntary agreement to another's proposition. 2) v. to voluntarily agree to an act or proposal of another, which may range from contracts to sexual relations ("consent." West's Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2. 2008. The Gale Group 23 Aug. 2017).

This means that anyone of this age is found to be mature enough do decide to engage in certain activities (i.e. Sexual activities or romantic relationships).

Why am I writing and defining all of this? Because everyone using Pedophilia in terms of ships need to stop. You are turning a serious REAL issue into a word used just to scare people. Unless what you are talking about is actual child pornography there is no reason at all to use the phrase pedophilia. By doing so you are actually harming real life people who have suffered from pedophilia, and if you are someone who suffered from pedophilia and attack people for ships over something that truly isn’t pedophilia i beg of you to please get therapy to help you with you past and your anger of your past. Do not let what happen to you ruin your life or have a hold on you, you have people who love you and wish to see you heal as best as you can.

Now let us talk about another issue in the fandom. Incest. I personally do not care for actual incestual ships or real life incest. The issue i’m addressing though is people using their headcanons as ways of scaring people off from shipping things.

When you headcanon people as siblings that is perfectly alright. I do it as well. The issue is when you forget it is a headcanon and start attacking a person who ships these characters in a romantic way. These people who ship them do NOT think of them as siblings the same way as you do. This is what you need to realize. If in canon is person is actually siblings and not “like a sibling” then you have a right to be mad/annoyed with this person. What you do not have the right to do is attack this person.

You don’t know this persons story. Maybe they are shipping this as a way to deal with old psychological scars. This may be their way of therapy. If you still feel the need to talk to a person about their actual incest shipping what you do is actually talk. No yelling, no attacks, no blaming. Just simply ask them “This is actual incest, why would you ship this. I would like to understand”. There is no reason to be mean.

The best thing to do is to just ignore the poster though. Just unfollow them or block them. Privately message your friends to just block them. This way you and people you know do not have to see what they post. DO NOT MAKE A PUBLIC BLOCK LIST. THIS CAUSES PEOPLE TO SEND DEATH THREATS. ONLY PRIVATE MESSAGE YOUR FRIENDS.

This section i will talk about four issues at once. Playing the victim card, playing the minor card, playing the LGBTQ+ card, and pulling the “I’m protecting minors” card.

When you go after someone else first, or you are told you did something wrong please do not turn yourself into the victim in this situation or use your age or sexual orientation to try and deter the person trying to educate you.

With the victim card just don’t do it. Its a dick move and makes you look extremely immature. If you start a situation, or are being told politely that you are in the wrong over something, Do Not Play The Victim. The reason I emphasised politely is the fact that you may not have known what you did was wrong and someone is coming at you in a mean manner. Try and defuse the situation the best as you can by trying to be polite to the person and if they are still mean after you were polite then they are to just be ignored and blocked.

On playing the minor card, at this point in your life you know what right and wrong is. Just because you are under 17 (18) does NOT mean you get a free pass to be an asshole. If you say anything mean, bully, send threats, or be anything else that is not nice it is in people's right to inform you of your behavior or in the case of bullying, to retaliate. When a person is pointing out that your behavior is wrong do not say “but im a minor!” because guess what, minors can and do understand right and wrong and you will be held accountable for your own wrongdoings. If my four-year old nephew knows the difference between right and wrong you at the age of 13+ (as no one younger than that should even be on tumblr) should definitely know between right or wrong and be able to deal with the lashback you will get when you do something wrong.

Onto playing the LGBTQ+ card. This has no standing in your argument whatsoever. If you are being mean or starting a situation do not pull your sexuality out as a defense. This is going to give a bad rap to all LGBTQ+ minorities. When you do this you are painting a smear on LGBTQ+ good reputation. If sexuality was not part of the original conversation do NOT bring it up. It is inconsiderate, immature, and manipulative.

Playing the race card is the same as the LGBTQ+ card. Just don’t. If race wasn’t part of the original conversation or argument don't bring it into the argument.

Lastly, playing the “I’m protecting minors” card. Just stop. You are not protecting minors you are using it as a way to manipulate young people into believing you and as an excuse to cover your shitty behavior. When minors are being attacked for a ship you are against that is when you lost the credibility to use this argument. I personally never want to see this argument ever used again or utter from anyone while there are actual minors on the internet being attacked for what you are against. Children should not be sent death threats just because you don’t like something.

This is something i will cover that is near a dear to me and a few of my friends. Anti’s attacking VAs of the shows and the Show creators. STOP. There is no reason to attack someone over petty squabbles of children and immature adults on the internet. If it wasn’t for them you wouldn’t even have the show and characters that you love. If they do something you don’t like. Don’t interact. If they are doing something actually problematic (i.e. Being racist, being homophobic) talk to them like a reasonable adult. Do not attack them, do not send them death threats, do not threaten them with physical violence, do not bring their families into the situation. If you love the show but the VAs aggravate you, ignore the VAs. If you can’t stand the VAs, or the writers, or the fandom then just leave the fandom. No skin off your back. Just leave. It would be better for you health as well as others health.

Why do I keep saying don’t send death threats? I keep repeating it because 1) it’s not cool, 2) a death threat could lead to actual death, 3) there are dire consequences from this action.

I hope you realize sending a death threat is actually punishable by law. Even if it is on anon you are not safe. People can track you, and police will arrest you if the person you sent it to wishes to press charges. You better hope if you get arrested for sending a death threat it’s because the person you sent it to wants to press charges; the other consequence of sending a death threat? Death. You could quite literally murder a person just by typing on your keyboard. You probably never think of that when you do it. When you send a death threat you are most likely thinking “they will never actually do it” but that is false. People kill themselves daily over online bullying and death threats. You know what happens when someone is caught sending death threats to a person and that person kills themselves? The person sending death threats will be charged as a murderer. You instigated the person's death by sending that message therefore you murdered that person. You destroyed their parents lives, their siblings lives, their grandparents lives, their pets lives, and their friends lives just because you didn’t give a second thought to what you were doing. You just stuck with “they will never actually do it” and never thought “but what if they actually will do it?”. You never know a person's story so never tell them to kill themselves as you doing so may be their last straw.

Now another argument i see a lot is “Fiction affects Reality” but is reality…..it doesn't. The only time fiction ever truly affects a person is in their early developmental stages (i.e. babies and toddlers) or if you have a mental issue that causes you to not be able to separate fiction from reality. Everyone else? Fiction does not affect our reality. Do we go see marvel movies and then go just off 40+ story buildings or kill people? No we do not. When fiction affects reality is when you read or watch something and then actually go do it. This is what we collectively as a website need to realize.

Now a lot of arguments are based in personal opinions. People like to try and generalize their own personal opinions as everyone's opinions. That's not how life works. You have your own opinions. Own up to it. Don’t try and use the argument of “everyone thinks this” because they don’t. Not everyone thinks the same way as you. If you completely detest something or it makes your skin crawl, alright that's your reaction, your opinion. It is not everyone else's opinion. Do not present your opinion as an entire groups. Own up to your own opinion.

Now let us discuss the double standard. There are two specific double standards that need to be addressed. Using arguments to prove what you are shipping is still “okay” in your standards even though the argument you are using is the same as people you shit on; and saying a ship is pedophilic and then reblogging or drawing NSFW art of the “minor” character and another “minor” character together in a different ship.

If you are using the arguments those you have antagonised are using you need to look deep inside yourself and ask; am i the problem? The answer will most probably be yes. The best thing to do is to apologize to those you wrongs and then ignore the ship you don’t like. There is no reason to interact with the ship anymore. You don’t like it, but if you are using the same argument for your ship than either they are both okay or neither is okay. You need to accept that there is nothing actually wrong with the other ship and just ignore it since you don’t like it.

Now once again on the subject of calling a ship “pedophilia”. One, its most likely not, and two, don’t go around and take the person from the ship you claim is a minor and draw sexual photos with that minor and another character that you say is a minor. Minor on minor sexual production is also bad my friend. Especially if you are an adult doing this. If you are a teenager doing this? That’s normal you are closer to the characters age (or what you perceive their age to be) this is an outlet for you. But if you are an adult saying one ship is wrong because you think it’s an adult and minor but then reblog/draw/write products with two characters you see as minors in it? Thats wrong. You can’t say an adult/minor ships is bad and then do NSFW stuff for a minor/minor ship. You are a grown ass adult sexualizing characters you see as minors. If you don’t see them as minors? Cool! Great! Fantastic! Stop attacking other people for a ship with the same person in it as an adult/minor ship if you perceive the minor as an adult in a different ship.

Lastly, one of the most important points i will make in this post; Learning how to unfollow, block, and walk away. You will notice I did repeat this in many sections. This is because these are easy positive methods of hiding away what you do not wish to see or interact with. If a person posts something you don’t like or agree with, unfollow them. If a person posts something that sets you off or makes your skin crawl, block them. If there is a situation going on you are part of and it is upsetting you or a fandom is upsetting you to be a part of, walk away. You do not have to stay in these situations. By doing these three things you could easily turn your tumblr from full of discourse and things that aggravate you to a very enjoyable experience.

Other things you can do is blacklist tags on tumblr such as ships you don't agree with, keywords of things that make you squeamish or upset you, characters you don’t like, etc. Don’t crosstag, this one applies to everyone. West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 7/28/17

One of the best discoveries I’ve made has been the digital subchannel Heroes & Icons. If you’re a cord cutter, then get yourself an antenna and check this thing out. My favorite aspect of it, however, is the fact that it runs a 5-hour Star Trek block six nights a week. Star Trek at 8, Star Trek: The Next Generation at 9, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine at 10, Star Trek: Voyager at 11, and Enterprise at 12. Sunday through Friday. And on Sundays they actually kick things off with Star Trek: The Animated Series at 7. I’ve pretty much watched nothing but Star Trek for the past 2 weeks. I’ve been reacquainted with favorite episodes, like TNG‘s “Chain of Command” and DS9‘s “Far Beyond the Stars”. I’ve discovered some hidden gems, like TOS‘s ” The Cloud Minders”. I’ve even discovered that I don’t hate Voyager or Enterprise as much as I thought I did.

I don’t talk about this too much, but the first 12 years or so of my life were comprised of pretty much NOTHING but Star Trek. From 1987-94, my favorite show on television was The Next Generation. When DS9 debuted, I expected it to continue my love affair, but it felt too preachy with its Space Holocaust allegory. It was in the later seasons, once the Dominion War began, that it actually ensconced itself as my favorite iteration of the franchise. By the time Voyager debuted, I had discovered comics, and they became my new mistress. While I watched about 4 hours of TNG a day in high school (Channel 20 REALLY loved playing TNG), my heart didn’t have room in it for a new Trek, so I “No time for love, Dr. Jones”‘ed Captain Janeway and her crew. Enterprise debuted when I was in college, and I was simply too busy worried about other shit to watch Captain Quantum Leap and his crew. Plus, due to some kind of contractual fallout, Ithaca didn’t get UPN. So, since the finale of DS9, my Trekkerdom lay dormant.

But when I say “I’ve forgotten more than you’ll ever know”, that’s primarily about Star Trek. I had several editions of the Star Trek Encyclopedia, I had the Technical Manual, the Technical Journal, the Star Trek Chronology. All of it. I’ve got the figures, and the role play toys. I even created my own uniform for Halloween back in the 90s. I was all Trek, 24/7, and you couldn’t tell me shit. Over time, though, that trivia got overwritten by X-Men 1st appearance notations and the names of TNBC actresses. What I’m saying, though, is that Heroes & Icons brought it all rushing back. It’s like I’m 15 again, blowing the evening watching Star Trek episodes I’ve already seen hundreds of times already. It’s also given me new perspectives on things that completely went over my head when I was younger. For example, Sisko is the Bajorans’ Space Jesus, and that’s pretty heavy. Even he doesn’t believe it, but in the end, yup it turns out he’s Space Jesus. I’ve also got thoughts on the current state of the franchise, too.

At SDCC, we got the above trailer for Star Trek: Discovery, which will air in North America on CBS All Access (yes, Dean, I know you’ll say All Anal Access because it sucks that we have to subscribe to another service just to watch this thing). I had no interest in this show because everything I heard about it didn’t sound like Star Trek. Now, though, the more they try to sell it as a bunch of new ideas, the more it just sounds like DS9. It’s gonna be Trek with interpersonal conflict. Great. I can get down with that. Its aesthetic seems more like late-era Stargate than Trek, though – especially those Klingon designs. There are certain things, though, that still feel like they miss the mark.

Take for example the fact that the show will feature the first same-sex couple on a Star Trek series, played by Rent‘s Anthony Rapp and My So Called Life‘s Wilson Cruz. Yeah, I get that representation is important, but it bothers me that this is being done in a prequel series, set before the events of the original Star Trek. With the exception of Enterprise, this is the series that takes place the closest to our timeline, so it’s really not much of a leap to think that same-sex couples exist. Ya know what would’ve meant more to me (as a straight, cis male who really doesn’t have a dog in the race but is still opinionated)? If the show had actually been a post-Dominion War, sequel series to TNG/DS9/Voyager, and it featured a same-sex couple. Science fiction tends to go 2 ways: it’s either dystopian or it’s about HOPE. As it stands, from what we’ve seen, same-sex couples are pretty much nonexistent in the 24th century. Yeah, I’m sure they exist, but we never saw them. It seems like it would be a testament to how enduring they are to see them that far in the future as opposed to just a couple of hundred years from now, when Discovery is set.

I could also be politicizing this for my own agenda, as I really want to know what happened after the war ended. Sure, there are books and stuff, but those things aren’t canon. I feel there are so many stories to tell from that era, and I’d love to see the franchise move forward instead of dance between the raindrops of continuity in the past. It feels like they’re stalling, which is how it felt with Enterprise and even the Kelvin movies. Someone, somewhere out there has got to have a great idea as to how to move the franchise forward and I hope CBS/Paramount finds them sooner rather than later.

SDCC Bullet Points

The bulk of San Diego Comic Con took place over the weekend, and here’s some stuff that debuted:

Michelle Pfeiffer is Hank Pym’s lost wife, Janet Van Dyne, in Ant-Man and The Wasp

The Captain Marvel film will be set in the 90s, and introduce the Skrulls to the MCU. Oh, and Nick Fury will have 2 eyes

We got this trailer for Ready Player One, which was hella polarizing. It seems a lot of folks hated the book on which it’s based. If you ask me, it just looks like a cinematic version of this commercial:

Comic creator Frank Miller, of 300 and Sin City fame, is writing a Superman: Year One story with art from John Romita Jr. Nothing about that sentence makes me want to open my wallet.

We got a new trailer for X-Men spinoff, The Gifted. I’m actually surprised they used established mutants like Polaris and Thunderbird. And is that actually Fenris?! I want to like this, but it just looks so…Fox.

We got a new trailer for The Defenders on Netflix. I get that this is the culmination of all the Marvel Netflix shows, but it didn’t do much for me since I’ve only seen 2 out of 5 seasons so far. There’s no way I’ll get caught up by this premiere date, but I’m sure it’ll mean more to me once I’m up to date. Kinda tired of the hallway fight trope, though.

Legends of Tomorrow is such a fun show. It started kinda dry, but got so much better last year. It reminds me of a syndicated Saturday afternoon show, but in a good way.

Things You Might Have Missed This Week

We’ll have to wait a bit longer for our annual dose of Abbi and Ilana, as Comedy Central has moved the Broad City season 4 premiere from August 23rd to September 13th

A few months ago, it was reported that Amy Schumer would be starring in a Barbie movie. Well, I made fun of that, she blocked me on Twitter, and then eventually dropped out of the role. Now they’re reporting that Anne Hathaway is up for the role, which is somehow more bewildering than the Schumer choice…

Justin Bieber cancelled the rest of his Purpose world tour because he was “committing his life to Christ”. This pissed off his crew, as they were left without jobs. He, then, proceeded to run over a paparazzo with his truck while leaving church. I swear, you can’t make this shit up!

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos has replaced Bill Gates as the richest man in the world.

Beginning September 29th, Hulu will begin streaming the Warner Bros shows that comprised ABC’s TGIF lineup, including Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, Full House, Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, and Step By Step. Meanwhile, Netflix is feverishly developing Perfecter Strangers, Family Still Matters, Chillin’ With Mr. Cooper, and Step By Step By Step.

I haven’t seen a non-country music video in years, but apparently they still make them, as Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards

Speaking of the VMAs, following the lead of the MTV Movie Awards, they’re doing away with the gendered categories Best Male/Best Female Artist, to be replaced by Artist of the Year. Also, in a bit of pandering, they’ve created the Best Fight Against the System, for those artists who have called for folks to #RESIST and all that.

Though I felt its farcical nature wore a bit thin during its first season, TBS’s Angie Tribeca has been renewed for season 4.

Smallville‘s Tom Welling is joining Fox’s Lucifer and *yawn* that’s really all there is to say about that.

Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the animated series Disenchantment from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. It will features the voices of Nat Faxon, Eric Andre, and Abbi Jacobson. Apparently it’s about elves and trolls and shit. Not really my bag, baby.

Person of Interest‘s Michael Emerson has been cast in a mysterious role for Arrow‘s 6th season. So, he’s probably Deathstroke’s accountant or something.

Because SyFy just doesn’t care anymore, and because they need something to air between Sharknados, Wynonna Earp has been renewed for a 3rd season.

The Wonder Woman sequel has a release date of December 13th, 2019

Apple discontinued the iPod Nano and Shuffle models, as they are the last remaining models that cannot run iOS apps.

Current Superman Henry Cavill grew a mustache for his role in Mission Impossible 37: Mission Harder, which will have to be digitally removed for Justice League reshoots. Ya know, the movie where he’s supposed to be dead, but is actually the worst kept secret in Hollywood.

Lionel Richie and Charlie Puth are in talks to join ABC’s American Idol reboot as judges. Yeah, that’s funny. Unless they’re coaching the contestants on how to get caught cheating while dancing on the ceiling, I’m not sure what Richie’s old ass brings to the table. And Puth is simply too new to be judging anybody.

New James Bond film in 2019. Nobody knows who’s playing him or directing the thing, but it’s coming. Yesiree, Bob!

Since they’re handing out cinematic universes like chicken samples at a food court, the John Wick universe will be expanded by the female-focused film, Ballerina.

Michael Phelps raced a CGI shark and people felt betrayed. He’s the friggin’ son of Poseidon! He can’t race ACTUAL sharks! There would be civil unrest beneath the surface!

With DC being the political capital of the country, it’s hard for a news person to stand out because the place is crawling with them. That wasn’t true, however, for Jim Vance. Everyone knew him and the man was an institution. Coming to NBC4 in 1969, he was one of the first Black anchors in a major news market. He anchored for over 4 decades, ingraining himself into the families of those who watched him.

When I was a toddler, I was really into the local news (I’ve always said I’m regressing as I get older), and I could name every anchor on every local newscast. And this was a golden age of DC news. You had the great Glenn Brenner, you had Maury Povich before he became a talk show host, and you had Vance. There was something about him that made him seem like your aunt’s cool boyfriend. He was an old man with a hoop earring. We used to laugh about it, but secretly I was hating because I knew I’d never be able to pull that off at his age. He rode motorcycles and laughed inappropriately at news stories he found funny. He was a guy who made you glad to watch the news, especially as the cries of Fake News! grew louder.

Back in May, Vance announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer, and it advanced rather quickly. He passed away last Saturday morning, and the announcement touched all corners of the DC area (no, I’m not calling it the DMV!). It was touching to see all of the tributes to him on the local stations, from those who were colleagues and competitors. Last Saturday night, News4 spent the entire 11 PM news talking about Vance and what he meant to DC. This might sound crazy, but it was so refreshing to watch the news without a single drop of actual news being reported. No Trump b.s., no local murders, not even a weather report. Just 30 minutes about a man who we basically grew up with in our homes. I always kinda took him for granted because you just expected he would be there every evening, but I’ve certainly missed him since he’s gone. I know he won’t mean much to those of you outside the DC viewing area, but believe me when I say that everybody here knew who Jim Vance was, and we’re all going to miss him in one way or another. For that reason, Jim Vance had the West Life Ever.

Q: What is BEGIN!AU?

A: It’s an AU that I created that is loosely based off of my interpretations the MVs (aka I have no clue what’s going on, so it’s kinda vague on purpose right now) Hopefully I will be expanding the world within it as time goes on though! As of now, it’s going to focus mainly on Jungkook and all the excerpts posted are written from his POV. I’m still working on fleshing out everything, so please bear with me.

I’m hoping that there will be several parts? But as of now, I currently have the Prologue Series and the what will be the Reflection Series (this is a work in progress– idk if I’m gonna keep that name, so it’s a placeholder for now lol) Both are based off of Jungkook’s memories. The Prologue is more or less a teaser to the actual storyline, whereas the Reflection Series will just be short snippets of his thoughts of each of the members (So there will be 6 parts total – I was originally going to release each portion on the member’s birthdays, but some are too clumped so I might be releasing them in random blocks of time lol J-Hope and Suga’s should be released on time of their bday though!)

Q: Can I ask questions to Begin!JK?

A: Depending on the nature of the asks, I will be either answering them within this AU or just do a non-AU. (It honestly depends on the question) But if you’re an askblog and want to do an AU crossover, I AM SO DOWN FOR A COLLAB. (it can be in this AU or a different one too!) I’m also working on several solo pieces that will pertain to this AU, but that’s like for the way future!

Q: Can I drew fanart for this AU?

A: JDGHSKGJHLG Sure! Just keep in mind that I haven’t determined what is ‘canon’ and what isn’t in this AU yet when it comes to fic writing, so idk how much you guys have to work with since everything is like ‘what is going on right now’ lol If anything you can say it was inspiration from my AU and that it’s your own interpretation of it since it’s not really based off it??? Idkman lol bc tbh I don’t even know what’s going on with my AU LOL However once my AU is more developed which won’t be for awhile, all I ask is that you credit me somewhere if it specifically relates to my AU & its plot! :) Also feel free to tag me if you post on tumblr! Theme & Interpretation

My interpretation of the AU, as mentioned before is loosely based off the MVs taken with artistic freedom. (Well less about the plot of the MVs, and more about the overall meaning of them) The main theme of this AU relates to the ‘loss of innocence’ or simply ‘growing up’ in layman’s terms . (This is especially alluded to in the most recent MV of “Spring Day’ where they made a reference to Omelas) Healing and mending wounds is also a underlying theme as well.

I want to to explore the areas of self discovery, self forgiveness, and self understanding. The Jungkook in this AU based off the prologue, is still struggling to accept the present and unwilling to leave the past behind. He’s struggling in the sense that he can’t let go of the past and those memories haunt him. While he does realize that the world is not kind, nor is it fair, he has a hard time accepting it, which is why he constantly wishes for things to return back to the way they were – back to happier days.

The whole entire prologue series is basically him battling against his conscience, contemplating on the ‘what ifs’ of moments in his past when he knows that there’s nothing he can do to change them. However at the last panel of the prologue series, you might notice that I drew him smiling compared to the panel right before where he’s just looking at the viewer– this was done for a reason.

I released the last part of the series right before the You Never Walk Alone album dropped, so I was honestly hoping that the image I had in mind would link it some way to the new songs AND GOD BLESS IT DID. There is a line in the supplemental story that said ‘But we can smile if we’re together’ and I was like YES GOOD JOB PAST DISSU U MADE A CORRECT DECISION OF WHERE UR TAKING UR AU BEFORE THE SONG CAME OUT LMFAO but that line of the song basically echos the sentiment that I was trying to portray in that last panel. So yes, the prologue series can be very angsty, but at the same time I wanted it to end with a message of hope at the end. There’s are a bunch of random easter eggs from when I was putting the whole series together, so if you have a question behind any of the panels or lines, feel free to ask! :D

Prologue Fun Facts

- The quotes following each part are all excerpts taken from Demian. I tried making them somewhat relate to the different parts, but one of the reasons I chose them was because they stood out to me– they also tie to common theme of growing up and accepting yourself.

- Almost all the scenes from P2 & P3 are in reference to the MVs, namely Run, I NEED U, Prologue, & Young Forever (props if you can recognize which MVs are from which panels lol)

- Some phrases in the lines used are a nod to some song titles as well! :)

Yes, You May Need a Blockchain

The following article originally appeared in Consensus Magazine, distributed exclusively to attendees of CoinDesk’s Consensus 2019 event.

There’s a certain kind of developer who states that blockchains are just terrible databases. As the narrative goes, why not just use PostgreSQL for your application? It’s mature, robust, and high performance. Compared to relational databases, the skeptic claims that blockchains are just slow, clunky and expensive databases that don’t scale.

While some critiques of this critique are already out there (1, 2), I’d propose a simple one sentence rebuttal: public blockchains are useful for storing shared state, particularly when that shared state represents valuable data that users want to export/import without error — like their money.

The data export/import problem

Take a look at the cloud diagrams for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. There are icons for load balancers, transcoders, queues, and lambda functions.

There are icons for VPCs and every type of database under the sun, including the new-ish managed blockchain services (which are distinct from public blockchains, though potentially useful in some circumstances).

What there isn’t an icon for is shared state between accounts. That is, these cloud diagrams all implicitly assume that a single entity and its employees (namely, the entity with access to the cloud root account) is the only one laying out the architecture diagram and reading from or writing to the application it underpins. More precisely, these diagrams typically assume the presence of a single economic actor, namely the entity paying the cloud bills.*

But if we visualize the cloud diagrams for not just one but one hundred corporate economic actors at a time, some immediate questions arise. Can these actors interoperate? Can their users pull their data out and bring it into other applications? And given that the users are themselves economic actors, if this data represents something of monetary value, can the users be confident that their data wasn’t modified during all this exporting and importing?

These are the types of questions that arise when we think about the data export and import from each entity’s application as a first-class requirement. And (with exceptions that we’ll get into), in general, the answer to these questions today is typically no.

No — different applications typically don’t have interoperable software, or allow their users to easily export/import their data in a standard form, or give users certainty that their data wasn’t intentionally tampered with or inadvertently corrupted during all the exporting and importing.

The reason why boils down to incentives. For most major internet services, there is simply no financial incentive to enable users to export their data, let alone to enable competitors to quickly import said data. While some call this the data portability problem, let’s call it the data export/import problem to focus attention on the specific mechanisms for export and import.

Current approaches to the data export/import problem

Even though the financial incentives aren’t yet present for a general solution to the data export/import problem, mechanisms have been created for many important special cases. These mechanisms include APIs, JSON/PDF/CSV exports, MBOX files, and (in a banking context) SFTP.

Let’s go through these in turn to understand the current state of affairs.

APIs. One of the most popular ways to export/import data is via Application Programming Interfaces, better known as APIs. Some businesses do let you get some of your data out, or give you the ability to write data to your account. But there’s a cost. First, their internal data format is typically proprietary and not an industry standard. Second, sometimes the APIs are not central to their core business and can be turned off. Third, sometimes the APIs are central to their core business and the price can be dramatically raised. In general, if you’re reading or writing to a hosted API, you’re at the mercy of the API provider. We call this platform risk, and being unceremoniously de-platformed has harmed many a startup.

JSON. Another related solution is to allow users or scripts to download JSON files, or read/write them to the aforementioned APIs. This is fine as far as it goes, but JSON is very free form and can describe virtually anything. For example, Facebook’s Graph API and LinkedIn’s REST API deal with similar things but return very different JSON results.

PDF. Another very partial solution is to allow users to export a PDF. This works for documents, as PDF is an open standard that can be read by other applications like Preview, Adobe Acrobat, Google Drive, Dropbox, and so on. But a PDF is meant to be an end product, to be read by a human. It’s not meant to be an input to any application besides a PDF viewer.

CSV. The humble comma separated value file gets closer to what we want for a general solution to the data import/export problem. Unlike the backend of a proprietary API, CSV is a standard format described by RFC 4180. Unlike JSON, which can represent almost anything, a CSV typically represents just a table. And unlike a PDF, a CSV can typically be edited locally by a user via a spreadsheet or used as machine-readable input to a local or cloud application. Because most kinds of data can be represented in a relational database, and because relational databases can usually be exported as a set of possibly gigantic CSVs, it’s also pretty general. However, CSVs are disadvantaged in a few ways. First, unlike a proprietary API, they aren’t hosted. That is, there’s no single canonical place to read or write a CSV representing (say) a record of transactions or a table of map metadata. Second, CSVs aren’t tamper resistant. If a user exports a record of transactions from service A, modifies it, and reuploads it to service B, the second service would be none the wiser. Third, CSVs don’t have built-in integrity checks to protect against inadvertent error. For example, the columns of a CSV don’t have explicit type information, which means that a column containing the months of the year from 1-12 could have its type auto-converted upon import into a simple integer, causing confusion.

MBOX. While less well known than CSV, the MBOX format for representing collections of email messages is the closest thing out there to a standardized data structure built for import and export between major platforms and independent applications alike. Indeed, there have been papers proposing the use of MBOX in contexts outside of email. While CSV represents tabular data, MBOX represents a type of log-structured data. It’s essentially a single huge plain text file of email messages in chronological order, but can also represent images/file attachments via MIME. Like CSV, MBOX files are an open standard and can be exported, edited locally, and reimported. And like CSV, MBOX has the disadvantages of no canonical host or intrinsic data integrity check.

SFTP. Before we move on, there’s one more data export/import mechanism that deserves mention: the secure file transfer protocol, or SFTP. While venerable, this is actually the way that individuals send ACH payments back and forth to each other. Essentially, financial institutions use SFTP servers to take in electronic transaction data in specially formatted files and transmit it to the Federal Reserve each day to sync ACH debits and credits with each other (see here, here, here, and here).

Each of these mechanisms is widely used. But they are insufficient for enabling the general case of tamper-resistant import and export of valuable data between arbitrary economic actors — whether they be corporate entities, individual users, or headless scripts. For that, we need public blockchains.

Public blockchains enable shared state by incentivizing interoperability. Public blockchains convert many types of data import/export problems into a general class of shared state problems. And they do so in part by incorporating many of the best features of the mechanisms described above.

Public blockchains provide canonical methods for read/write access like a hosted corporate API, but without the same platform risk. No single economic actor can shut down or deny service to clients of a decentralized public blockchain like bitcoin or ethereum.

They also enable individual users to export critical data to their local computer or to a new application like JSON/CSV/MBOX (either by sending out funds or exporting private keys) while providing cryptographic guarantees of data integrity.

They provide a means for arbitrary economic actors (whether corporations, individual users, or programs) to seamlessly interoperate. Every economic actor who reads from a public blockchain sees the same result, and any economic actor with sufficient funds can write to a public blockchain in the same way. No account setup is necessary and no actor can be blocked from read/write access.

And perhaps most importantly, public blockchains give financial incentives for interoperability and data integrity.

This last point deserves elaboration. A public blockchain like bitcoin or ethereum typically records the transfer of things of monetary value. This thing could be the intrinsic cryptocurrency of the chain, a token issued on top of the chain, or another kind of digital asset.

Because the data associated with a public blockchain represents something of monetary value, it finally delivers the financial incentive for interoperability. After all, any web or mobile app that wants to receive (say) BTC must honor the bitcoin blockchain’s conventions. Indeed, the application developers would have no choice due to the fact that bitcoin by design has a single, canonical longest proof-of-work chain with cryptographic validation of every block in that chain.

So, that’s the financial incentive for import.

As for the incentive for export, when it comes to money in particular, users demand the ability to export with complete fidelity, and very quickly. It’s not their old cat pics, which they might be ok with losing track of due to inconvenience or technical issues. It’s their money, their bitcoin, their cryptocurrency. Any application that holds it must make it available for export when they want to withdraw it, whether that means supporting send functionality, offering private key backups, or both. If not, the application is unlikely to ever receive deposits in the first place.

So, that’s the financial incentive for export. Thus, a public blockchain economically incentivizes every economic actor that interacts with it to use the same import/export format as every other actor, whether they be corporation, user, or program. Put another way, public blockchains are the next step after open source, as they provide open data. Anyone can code their own block explorer by reading from a public blockchain, and anyone can create their own wallet capable of writing to a public blockchain.

That’s a real breakthrough. We’ve now got a reliable way to incentivize the use of shared state, to simultaneously allow millions of individuals and companies access to read from (and thousands to write to) the same data store while enforcing a common standard and maintaining high confidence in the integrity of the data.

This is very different from the status quo. You typically don’t share the root password to your database on the internet, because a database that allows anyone to read/write to it usually gets corrupted. Public blockchains solve this problem with cryptography rather than permissions, greatly increasing the number of simultaneous users.

It’s true that today public blockchains are typically focused on monetary and financial applications, where the underlying dataset represents an append-only transaction history with immutable records. That does limit their generality, in terms of addressing all the different versions of the data import/export problem. But there’s ongoing development on public blockchain versions of things like OpenStreetMaps, Wikipedia, and Twitter as well as systems like Filecoin/IPFS. These wouldn’t just represent records of financial transactions where immutability was a requirement, but could represent other types of data (like map or encyclopedia entries) that would be routinely updated.

Done right, these newer types of public blockchain-based systems may allow any economic actor with sufficient funds and/or cryptographic credentials to not just read and write but also edit their own records while preserving data integrity. Given this capability, there’s no reason one can’t put a SQL layer on top of a public blockchain to work with the shared state it affords, just like an old-fashioned relational database. This results in a new type of database with no privileged owner, where all seven billion humans on the planet (and their scripts!) are authorized users, and which can be written to by any entity with sufficient funds.

That day isn’t here yet. It remains to see how far we can push the use cases for public chains. And scaling challenges abound. But hopefully, it’s clear that while public blockchains are indeed a new kind of database, they offer something quite different than what a traditional database offers.

* The one exception is the so-called “Requester Pays” feature that Amazon and other cloud services offer. This is a cool feature that lets someone pay to write to your S3 bucket. But it’s permissioned – it still requires every would-be writer to open an AWS account, and the bucket owner has to be willing to let them all write to their bucket, so there’s still a single distinguished owner.
