Calcium Carbonate CaCO3

Potassium nitrate (KNO3 aka saltpeter) can be extracted from human and animal manure, once bacteria oxidizes the nitrogen-containing organic material into various nitrate salts. It seems potassium nitrate can also be obtained by immersing guano in water for a day, filtering it, and harvesting the crystals, but that doesn’t seem to use calcium carbonate in the process. The charcoal is the thing that burns in the combustion reaction for the gunpowder explosion, but the need for oxygen limits the effectiveness of using charcoal on its own as the inner layers would need to wait for the outer layers to burn away in order to access the oxygen needed for the reaction. Especially when she’s gaining a reputation for her soirees which generally center around cards and quite a lot of money.

The part she hides is that she’s working intimately with the Devils - literally devils from hell - of the Neath and sticking her nose into mysteries that she probably shouldn’t be; more than that, she’s trying to think of ways to make a profit off of it. The soirees are a respectable, if a little notorious, front to a small string of gambling dens she started in the less well-off places in London. Beyond that she’s a prolific thief (its how she got her start and her real passion), a engages in knife-and-candle duels that are pretty strictly outlawed (also a version of fight club that includes fencers, monsters, colonels, and one (1) prince with a full on lance and horse, all whom try to actually kill each other). And, oh yeah, super duper thief - no bueno.

Ideally, if said mystery goes right, then society won’t remember finding out about it in the first place.

K2. Are there others in their universe with the same or a similar PA as your OC? I.e., others from different dimensions, others of their same species. Do they know about it?

Yeah pretty much everyone has some level of messed up to them, some strange aspect that has manifested due to their menace and appear far stranger than her. Her friend, for instance, has eyes - sclera and all - swimming with the dark black-blue color of monsters that live deep in the sea that he happens to hunt.

But better example *spoilers*: one of the most infamous noble NPCs, the Duchess, just so happen to not be a crusty old white woman as she presents himself to be and instead might be some immortal ancient egyptian whose lover is essentially a walking talking mass of venom which is one of the only types of poisons to permanently kill the denizens of the Neath who she, btw, milks the flesh of to get this venom in the first place.

So there are way more sinister and weird things going on beyond just a loveless master thief. But, then again, she’s just really getting started.

K7. Does your OC’s PA affect their dietary habits so that they are unusual or problematic by their society’s standards?

She had nearly been compelled into cannibalism so that was a THING. But she got over that pretty quick. Beyond that she’s partial to a Devilish brew of sherry which is definitely noticeable but beyond that she just tends to favor the men’s after dinner choices of cigars and whiskey in society rather than be with the women so it might be seen as “odd.”

K8. What are some routines, if any, of self-care that your OC must engage in that are not typical of their society? I.e., having to file their teeth,

A lot of laundering and baths to get out blood, a lot of laudanum bottles to get rid of for aches and pains and all the nightmares. Ice baths take the edge off all of the so much aches and pains of her violent extracurricular activities.

If she starts getting nubs for horns she’ll have to start filing those down or start wearing shades to hide her sometimes-glinting brass eyes, both courtesy of her affiliation with the Devils.

Highlighting the April 3359 Point Mech Panic

The traditional end-of-war event was yet again an affair where a commonder only had to have one working Mech.

This is probably the most fluid event we have, (at least where all Commanders have as many legal Mechs as they are allowed) as the RNG gods influence play a huge role.

As usual for me, I managed to get a Humbaba in operation, and collected whatever odd working equipment and armaments that still were in working order so we could make a decent showing. As we were to compete on K3 where the regulars could be expected to outgun me by 5-28 weapons, the odds of rising to the top were slim indeed, and even getting any prize at all were questionable.

But as we arrived, -fashionably late, there were in fact some room left on the foothills. Even though the opposition seemed well entrenched, attacks were launched and as the RNG gods smiled upon me, a spot on the slopes were aquired. Further advancement proved impossible, so recording equipment were employed to get footage from the other tops as well.

It was no surprise when Chris Workman`s (from the Death Dealers) Cyberdon tore us off the spot, but there were still some supers in the storage, so we could at least launch some counterattcks.

Exept…. we couldnt. As I aquired him as a target, the dreaded ReCaptcha virus struck, and it was neccesary to restart my ride to get rid of it. This is normally not more than an annoyance, and even during a scramble it will in general just make you start sweating until the sensors come back online and you can continue the attack. But in this case... When the sensors cleared, the climb was already over.

The recording equipment was gathered, and by studying the footage taken I finally determined that this events winners had been.

The number of contestants showing up for the PointMech was the same as we had for the Frontline. However, the imbalance between the tops was slightly worse this time, and two Bronzes from each of K2 and K9 ended unclaimed. Said Bronzes were returned for resmelting after the award ceremony.

The mostwinning Mech model, was once again the Boreas (3 Golds) The only other Mech model to gain multiple Gods (2) was last years winner; the Sever. None of the C-Mechs managed to gain a win this time.

The last half-hour was (at least on most tops) a swirling whirlpool of action. Seven Golds were in play, two of them not decided untill less than a half-minute remained. Three Golds were held for more than two hours. But was the action quite that ferocious when it came to the lesser prizes? Best way to find out is to count the number of medals held for more than 30 minutes in this event:

Increadibly enough, not even one attack was launched on the lowest top (K11), and K10 had just a Silver strike. The two tops where prizes were assured (K2 and K9) had subdued action as well. But all of the remaining tops saw most of the medals changing hands. In fact, on Mount Olympus all the medals changed hands, and when the light flashed only a handfull of them had been held for more than a minute.

Three Clans managed to claim a double triumph in this event: Warlocks Headquarters on Mount Olympus and K2, The Brotherhood BlackWatch on K4 and K5, and the Indo Nusa Alliance on K9 and K10. None of the unaligned Commanders managed to get a Gold, neither did any of the Frontline winners follow up on their success.

Well, pretty clear rules here. Only Mechs massing 35 tons or less is allowed to compete. And no, that is for each individual Mech, not the total tonnage allowed.

Kaytoo towered over him at his side. Most of the Rebels gave him a wide berth, but not Melshi's squad. They had welcomed the droid as one of their own. For now, though, the two of them would spend significant time on Alderaan. Senator Organa had apparently requested his aid with his daughter's security detail. Cassian wasn't sure how much assistance he could give to an eight year old princess, but he liked Leia, and he owed her for saving Kaytoo. And since Kaytoo had saved his life, he figured he owed her his life, too. Melshi came up to him, giving him a hug. Stiffly, unsure of himself, Cassian squeezed back. He wasn't used to human affection. "Be careful out there, Cass. I didn't drag you off that frozen planet for you to get yourself killed on a crazy secret mission in paradise." Cassian nodded. "I promise." And suddenly, it was time to go. Kaytoo had already placed his belongings aboard the transport. As he started up the ramp, he was greeted by Leia's golden droid, C-3PO. "Master Cassian, it's so good to see you again. Her highness is excited about your visit." A high pitched whistle from the blue astromech at his side seemed to agree. This was followed by several excited blips. "Yes, Artoo. As you can see, Master Cassian is accompanied by an Imperial Security droid." "I have been completely reprogrammed. You have no need to worry," Kay immediately defended himself. "Oh, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. Senator Organa has assured the entire crew that you are perfectly harmless," Threepio said as he waved his arm at him. "I beg your pardon," Kaytoo started to correct, straightening up. Cassian cut him off. "Yes, Kaytoo is no threat to anyone in the Alliance. And we are both grateful for our invitation." "I have been instructed by my master to treat you as family, Master Cassian. So if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." "Thank you," he replied, surprised at the prickling sensation behind his eyes. As he took his seat, he tried to brush the moisture away without anyone seeing it. Were it not for a low forlorn toot from the astromech droid, he would have thought he succeeded. The flight to Alderaan was surprisingly comfortable and short. This specific transport had been sent for him, so it was a luxury yacht almost straight off the assembly line. They made dock without incident and were welcomed personally by the Alderaanian Royal family. Cassian and K2 were shown to his rooms, plural, by an apologetic servant. "The queen and viceroy wanted to be here to greet you personally, but there was a diplomatic problem requiring immediate attention. They ask that you make yourself comfortable and are looking forward to seeing you at dinner tonight. There is appropriate evening attire in the wardrobe. And another servant will be up in," she glanced at her time piece, "three hours to help you find your way to hall. The bell pull over there will summon a servant if you need any assistance. Please don't hesitate to ask, Master Cassian." She quietly closed the door behind her and left him alone to explore the vast space. He had been alone less than five minutes when the door opened again and Leia came bursting into the room. "Cassian," she cried as she wrapped her arms around his waist. "It's so good to see you! Come on! I want to show you the palace." Half smiling Cassian asked, "Can I at least put my stuff away?" "No. Save that for later," she said, dragging him by one arm out of the room. "Come on Kaytoo." And with that, the three of them set off on an exploration of Leia's home. Cassian hoped Kaytoo could secure him a map, otherwise he would never find his way around this place. Leia ended her tour in the family dining room. She timed it so that they were just sitting down for the meal. Grabbing him by the hand, she dragged him over to meet her mother. "So this is the young man I have heard so much about?" Queen Breha asked. "My husband and daughter speak very highly of you." Cassian tried to bow, but the queen refused. "None of that, now. Here you are family." She pulled him in for a hug, which he stiffly reciprocated. Brusquely, Breha continued, "Now let's eat." Dinner was a bizarre affair for Cassian. Conversation moved fast around him and before he knew it he had eaten more in one meal than he remembered eating in a month. As desert was being served, Breha outlined her plans for the newest addition to their family. He was going to be very busy if she had her way. For the first time in years, he slept without a blaster under his pillow. The next morning Cassian was being shown into the viceroys office. Bail looked up as he entered. He came to his feet with a smile and ushered the lad into a seat. They layout of this office was so different from Draven's. It was designed to make one comfortable and feel at home. "Come, sit. How was your trip?" The questions were so normal, Cassian was almost uncomfortable. Bail seemed to genuinely care about his answers and listened on the edge of his seat. He offered Cassian tea and some kind of sweet cake and wouldn't let him refuse. Several hours into the conversation, Bail turned the focus and finally got down to what seemed the point of this unusual interview. "While you are here on Alderaan, I want you to think of this as your home. Breha and I will be there for you in whatever capacity you need. I hope that one day you can come to think of this as your home." He paused looking down at his hands. "As you know, Alderaan is a peaceful planet, we have no weapons to speak of. I know you brought at least one blaster with you." Looking uncomfortable, Cassian acknowledged, "It's an older one. Melshi gave it to me years ago and I keep it for that reason. Do you want me to-". Bail held up his hand to stop the boy. "Getting rid of it won't be necessary. Just keep it in good repair, unloaded and away from prying eyes. I am not about to take away a family heirloom. It would just be better for everyone if we kept this to ourselves." He smiled. "Sometimes, it is impossible to take a soldier away from the fight." "Thank you," Cassian whispered quietly. "I do have one request." Bail looked him in the eye. "I angered a few people recently. In the last few weeks I have received numerous threats against my family. Breha is never outside the palace without her guards, so I am not too concerned with her safety. It's Leia I worry about. She's too young to really understand the dangers around her. She trusts people in a way that is dangerous." "You want me to guard her?" "Not really. She has guards. I want you to be her friend, stick by her side. Maybe one day be like the brother she never had." For a moment the senator looked almost sad. "It's not that I don't trust her guards. But Leia can be impulsive. She makes rash decisions that could put her in danger. In that respect, she is a normal child. Just be her friend." "I can do that," Cassian said with a small smile. "She's already making plans for her summer break. They all seem to include me." He didn't seem troubled by this at all. "And although you can't carry a blaster, nothing in our disarmament treaties prevents you from carrying a hunting knife. This one was given to me by my father, a long time ago." The knife, about six inches long, was in a holster intricately carved with the Organa coat of arms. Cassian closed his hand around the weapon. "The holster straps on to your leg. Keep in on you at all times." "I promise," he answered solemnly. "Now I think I have kept you long enough from your lessons. Off with you. See you at dinner." At that Cassian was out his door, looking younger than Bail had ever seen him. The next few months passed in a blur. Every day he sat in on the princess's lessons, learning a great deal about Alderaan and the other side of galactic politics. Every night he ate dinner with the family. It wasn't long before he was settled into this new atmosphere as if he had always been there. The good, steady food resulted in frequent fitting sessions for new clothing. He filled out and soon he was almost as tall as his mentor. It didn't take long before his hair grew out more into the Alderaanian style, flowing and almost covering his eyes. He blended in as another member of the royal family. Before long most of the citizens forgot that Cassian wasn't born on Alderaan, although the purists never would.

“A Better Me”

She is not staying still in the shining now, and taking big smart steps forward. A girl who was like a white flower blossom is becoming an elegant young woman who is fit various descriptions. Actress Im Yoona’s shine that deepens another level.

Even if she’s not the ‘center’ of a brilliantly shining stage, even if she’s not receiving flashes in a glamorous dress, Yoona is a person that stands out whenever, wherever. Her slender and long body, milky skin, a deer-like deep and transparent eyes that center her narrow face, and her refreshing smile. Aside from one’s likes and dislikes, she has pretty looks acknowledged by anyone and with a unique mood, when she first appeared before the world, she had the role of a ‘girl who is particularly pretty among pretty kids’.

However, Yoona has been able to show that beauty unchangingly by not staying as just a slender girl, but by working hard with a healthy energy and with a warm heart. Even though she is an idol that can capture the public’s gaze in one breath, she didn’t rest on the laurels of that name, and Yoona has sincerely and smartly taken steps forward. Recently, the tvN drama <The K2> which ended popularly was an even more meaningful piece for Yoona and had special meaning in her walk of life.  As she lived as ‘Go Anna’, a girl with dark wounds and a complicated inner side, which is opposite of her given image, she cried and was hurt countless times, but she overcame it with her own firm ways, and in the end, she brought a splendid conclusion to fruition.

In this moment where she has silently walked over a huge mountain that appeared treacherous, Yoona does not get prematurely excited or ahead of herself, and carefully takes in the compliments she receives. She smiles silently saying that this is only the beginning of the process to become actress Im Yoona who has become a bit better, and has grown a little more. When we thought this appearance was a bit unexpected, Yoona said, “It’s time for me to experience even more changes. I have so many more faces that I still want to show.”

<The K2> ended while it was popular. You must have some thoughts now that it has ended. Has it been almost 3 years? It’s a piece that I’m showing for the first time in a while, so while we were filming, it was fun and my heart was anticipating it a lot. It was fun to experience the lively energy of the location, and it was refreshing to wait for the viewers’ reactions with a fluttering heart. More than thoughts of it being difficult, I liked that I was able to participate in an amazing piece, and that I could attempt a lot of things within that. There were incredible actors that I could learn especially a lot from, as well as passionate staff, so I was able to enjoy it twice as much.

In previous works, you mostly showed us bright and confident sides, so when we first heard the casting news, we were surprised. We’re curious how you came to decide on a drastic attempt. It wasn’t on purpose, but while I was waiting for a piece that captured my heart, the gap ended up being long. I wanted to meet a character that I could play really well. While I was on a break, I was one step away, so I was able to seriously think about acting. If I do a piece, what kind of side I could show, how viewers would take the character I’m acting, what direction I should take going forward, and so on. While I was hesitating about whether I should show more of what I’ve been showing or if I should attempt something new even if it’s unfamiliar, I received the script for <The K2>. Most of the scripts that come to me are candy characters similar to <You Are My Destiny> but Anna was completely different. As soon as I read it, I had the conviction of ‘I don’t want to miss this. I have to do this one’. I thought the clothes wouldn’t fit exactly, but that unfamiliarity pulled me in strongly. Along with an understanding of ‘Why did I not think of a direction like this?’ even though I was very concerned about it. It was a character who threw a lot of emotion in the way of Actress Im Yoona, who is coming out in front of everyone for the first time in a while.

Anna, who experiences a lot of bends and pain in life, is not an easy character to express. Especially in the beginning, we see her unsociable side, and as the story unfolds, she comes and goes to the extreme ends of emotions. There must have been a lot of difficult aspects. There were many scenes where emotions had to be brought out and expressed. Normally, I rarely ever yell but I needed to scream and I shed a lot of tears too. In the 1st episode, which was filmed in Barcelona, Spain, I had to run around barefoot covered in blood. She lived secluded from society and oppressed, like a shadow, and as she meets ‘Jeha (Ji Changwook’s role)’, she opens her heart and depends on him, and showing this process in a convincing way was not easy. When I look back, the boundaries of emotional change should have appeared a bit more delicate, so I think in many ways, it was a bit lacking. I do have some regrets, but to me, it was a very good experience. I learned a lot. If I had to take on Anna alone, it would have been incredibly difficult, but the sunbae actors I worked with had very solid skills and energy, so I was able to pull out more than what I possess alone. I’m very thankful and happy.

What is the most memorable scene, or a moment that you remember from filming? Every scene was special, so it’s not easy to narrow it down to one. Of course, the scenes filmed in Spain’s exotic environment were memorable, as were working with (Song) Yoona sunbaenim, who had an antagonistic relationship to me. Since before I joined the project, the fact that I could act with Yoona sunbaenim alone made me nervous. More than anything, the scene where Anna meets her dad (Jo Sungha’s role), who she has wanted to meet, touched me the most. All of the complicated emotions that Anna has built up over time in her heart surged up my whole body, so for a take that went on for more than 15 minutes, I cried. I cried to the point that my eyes swelled up so much that staff worried whether I’d be able to film the day after. Personally, it was a special moment where I was able to show and also fill up to my heart’s content.

There were a lot of people who said ‘We saw actress Yoona’s potential’. You must be proud to receive such good praise about your acting. I’m thankful that people are seeing me positively. Every person has a different standard but honestly for me, rather than thinking I did well, I think more about the many aspects where I’m still lacking. Even if I have to go through more severe hardships, I promised myself to improve. Because I want to become a good actress. Through <The K2> I think I mostly got rid of my fear toward new attempts. It’s not confidence, but should I say that I have developed faith in myself to continue to show a new face within projects going forward. Before, I was very aware of and concerned with people’s assessments. Because of that, the breadth of my movement became narrow. Now, rather than being shaken by others’ gaze, I want to center myself and walk the path I want to walk, find the path I need to walk. I want to put down my burdens and anxiety. If I build my efforts continuously like that, I’m sure I will become a good actress.

Through Anna, it feels like you’ve stepped deeper into the path as an actress. My will toward acting has been elevated, and my curiosities have increased too. I’ve started to ask myself questions like what kind of acting is more natural and will evoke an even deeper emotion, how diverse of a role will I be able to pull off, and what kind of a person is a good actor. Going forward, steadily and diligently, I am going to find those answers. Truthfully, my personality is not one that sets a distant goal and dreams big. I tend to place importance on things right in front of me, and putting my best into achieving that. When I’m doing SNSD activities, I pour all of my energy into the stage, and when I act, I try hard to pull out as much as possible in front of the camera. If sincere steps are piled up over time, even if progress is slow, I believe that I will be better bit by bit. I must be becoming a bit broader, and a bit deeper. I hope I will be able to meet myself who is definitely a bit better than I was yesterday.

I heard you already confirmed the next project? I was surprised once again hearing that it’s a historical drama. We’ll be able to meet pretty Yoona wearing hanbok. It’s a historical melodrama called <The King Loves>, broadcasting early next year. As the daughter of the wealthiest man in Goryeo, it will be a romance with Im Siwan oppa. I’ve done a historical drama in China, but it’s my first one domestically, so I’m curious and I’m really anticipating it. With this piece too, I wanted to show a new face again. Through <The K2> I’ve overcome my fear and worries toward new attempts, so I want to attempt a transformation even more proactively. Regardless, I want to continue to have diverse experiences. Whether it does well or not, whether I receive good feedback or not, I don’t want to become caught up in that and courageously get into a new role. Also early next year, I will be able to meet everyone through the big screen. My first movie <Confidential Assignment> will open. I don’t have a big role, but it’s meaningful because it’s my first.

You’re hardworking. As an actress, I wonder if this is an era where you take leaps with each step. Now that we look back, it has been 10 years since your debut. Before we looked at sunbaenims who got to their ‘10th year’ and thought it’s cool and amazing but now that I encounter the number ‘10’, it’s hard to believe. It doesn’t seem like that much time has passed, but it feels awkward. But when I look back, I worked hard and I was happy because I received a lot of love. As a person who is in their ‘10th year’, I still have many areas where I’m inadequate, but I think I have become very natural among people and in society. It must be because I was beside good people, and fans, who warmly look at me without change. I’m very thankful for that.

Since we saw your potential as a good actress, we’ll expect a lot more from Yoona from now on. We are cheering on the start of your new plan. When I look back in the last 10 years, I was participated in five projects. I think there will be a lot of people who think that it’s a slower progression than they thought. Truthfully, I was scared of shattering or breaking so I held back a lot, but now I want to take bigger strides. I still get nervous and shaky when I go on set, but it’s still fun and enjoyable. One thing I wish for is to be able to always show a new face to the public. I want to be a person who generates curiosity and anticipation of, ‘What side of Yoona will she show next?’. Even after a long time, becoming an ‘actress people are curious about’ is a current dream of mine as an actress.

5 Tips To Get A Huge Kick Drum Sound

Hey guys! It's Brad Simons here, and this post is all about making your kick drum sound huge. Like Donald Trump huge (sorry, yuuuge). There are few things more satisfying in the studio than getting that kick sound just right. As always, I'm going to talk about how I go about it, rather than describing all possible ways that it's done. We're going to talk about the process from tracking, all the way to mixing, so we can make sure the final mix has that much-needed kick drum sound. Here we go!

1) Get It Right In The Room

This is a cardinal rule in the studio. How many times have you heard someone say, "you can't polish a turd"? It's true, you can't. No matter what you do, if you don't get the sound right in the room, you're not going to get it right in the mix. Don't take shortcuts. 

Now in terms of the kick drum, what exactly does that mean?

Well to start, you need to find the right spot in the room for the kit. This is often done with a tom, as they resonate and reveal more about the room than the kick and snare do. So grab a tom, and walk around the room while hitting it. See how it responds to each area of the room. Look for something that resonates, but is not muddy. 

Secondly, work on the tuning of the drum. What a difference a great tuning can make to the sound of any drums. You should have a good idea of the pitch you want it to be at and how resonant you want it to sound. Now, I'm not going to talk about drum tuning techniques in this post, but it will definitely worth either hiring a professional or at least educating yourself with a few YouTube videos. Alternatively, you can use get yourself a Tune-Bot Drum Tuner to get the tuning you're looking for. This thing even has a chart with preset tuning frequencies based on size of drums and sound you're looking for. Definitely worth looking into.

Third, try different kick drums, beaters, and heads. Now some of that is easier said than done, not all of us have 5 different kick drum options laying around. Fair enough! But the least you could do is try out a few different kick drum heads, and a few different beaters. If you want a lot of attack, look for a hard beater than adds some of the click sound to the drum. If you're going for more of a soft pillow-y sound, then grab a felt beater to minimize the attack.

Either way, you need to get the drum sounding the way you want it before you even put a mic up to it. 

2) Choose The Right Mics

This can be pretty subjective, I'm not going to lie. But there are a set of standard practices that can get you to that great kick drum sound. Here are a few options that I like to go with:

Inside Mic

I typically aim for attack with this mic. I want to get the hard transient here, not necessarily as concerned with the subby thump frequencies. Typically, I'll use an Audix D6, an AKDG D112, Sennheiser MD421, or even just a Shure SM57. As expected, you're going to get more "slap" of the front batter head when you move the mic further inside. If you need a lot of attack, for say rock or metal, this is essential to get it to cut through your mix. If you want a bit more tone off the inside mic, don't put it quite as far in. It's a good idea to have some scratch tracks cue'd up in your session, then see how it fits in the mix. Play with moving the mic forward and back until its working.

Outside Mic

This is where I get my bottom end information from. I typically place the mic a close as I can to the kick drum, without it touching the head. Give yourself a couple inches of room, as the outer head will move slightly when played. Some guys will put this at the sound hole of the kick, I prefer it directly over the rest of the drum head. 

Some go to mics for me include an AKG D112, Rode K2, Neumann U87 (padded down), Neumann M147. It seems tube condensers get a cool thump to the sound. Blends well with what we have on the inside

Front Mic

Let me explain exactly what I mean for front mic. I don't mean putting a mic on the beater side of the kick drum, I mean a microphone in front of the whole kit at kick drum height. Let's call it, the "audience" side of the drum kit. But if you want a bit of space and air to the sound, you should try adding another mic that's about 1-2 feet in front of the kick drum. Try using a microphone that you would typically use for room mics. We might use the Neumann U87, AKG C12, or even a Shure SM7b. You'll have to check the phase on this mic, as there is a potential for alot of issues. Experiment with moving it forward and backward while flipping the phase until the bottom end is right. You'll also have to check this again once the rest of the room mics and the overheads are up and running.

Other Mics

I want to quickly note that there are also other mics at play here, but for the sake of brevity, I'm going to leave them out of this post. Room mics can capture the kick drum, but that's another post altogether. Also, sometimes engineers will put a dynamic or a pencil condenser on the beater side of the kick drum for more attack, but in my experience and opinion, it sounds pretty bad. Maybe I haven't figured out how to do it properly yet. Who knows! So we're going to leave it at that.

3) Get The EQ Right

I don't have an extravagant method for EQ, but I think what I'm doing works? My first step is to cut mids. Depending on the genre, I will typically cut anywhere from 10 to 15 dB from 300-700 Hz. There are a couple ways to get this right. You can start by boosting 15 dB, and sweep that frequency range to find the nasty frequencies, then cut them. Or you can start with a cut and just sweep until it feels right. Honestly, I'm just looking for the tone here. So I usually cut first, then sweep until it "sounds right". 

If I want more thump, I'm going to go in and use a bell EQ to boost somewhere around 65 Hz. However, this is a fast way to make your kick subby and muddy in your mix. So I counter that by also engaging a hi-pass filter, and I then use that to decide how much low end I need. It may seem counter-intuitive, but sometimes my kick drum will have an 8 dB boost at 65 Hz, and then it will be hi-passed at about 80 Hz. I know what you're thinking, that doesn't make any sense. But I'm serious, try it out!

I do basically the same thing on the top end, just in reverse. So I'll usually have to do a bit more sweeping to find the frequency I like. If it's a really dense and loud mix, say a metal band, the frequency usually ends up higher. For a softer sound, it'll end up lower. So I may boost anywhere from 2 kHz up to 9 or 10 kHz. That's a decision you'll have to make per track. I then use the lo-pass filter to get rid of any nasty highs and make room for things like cymbals. Usually hit this around 9 or 10 kHz. 

I don't really have a set method for where to apply this EQ. I usually have the two tracks above I mentioned (kick in and kick out), and then I bus them together into an aux in Pro Tools. Sometimes I will apply this EQ to each track, sometimes to just the bus, but most of the time, a combination of both. It simply takes experimenting until it's sitting in the mix properly. 

4) Work It With Compression

I like this stage, as this is where the kick drum starts to come alive. A kick drum is a very dynamic instrument, so depending on the context, sometimes alot of compression is needed to get every hit to be heard. This also depends on the consistency of the drummer, as well as the genre.

So for instance, a folk record probably doesn't need a whole lot of compression, as the kick is not as prominent in this genre. You actually want it to breathe a little and have more movement. So if it's needed, I try to stay within the 2 - 4 dB of gain reduction. Try a slower attack and release and a lower ratio to keep it nice and gentle. I will sometimes use the UAD LA2A Silver plugin for this, adjusting the emphasis knob to sidechain out some of the low frequencies. Alternatively, if it's a dense mix, I'm typically hitting that thing much harder. If I'm mixing a rock or metal record, my go-to is the blue stripe UAD 1176 Rev E, as it's punchy and fast. I still keep the attack time slow to let the transient breathe, but I make the release time quick. Gives it a bit of pump. As for gain reduction, anywhere from 5-10 dB is fine. However, you'll want to make sure that you're not increasing the bleed from other mics too much, as this can end up causing phase issues in your entire drum sound. So be careful of that. 

You can also try using parallel compression to keep the original uncompressed sound and supplement it with a punchy and dynamically consistent copy. I usually have my kick bus duplicated for a parallel comp. For some reason, I like the UAD 1176 AE plugin for this one, slow attack, quick release, and gain reduction of about 7-9 dB. Start the fader around -10 dB and move up to taste. Don't overdo it!

5) Give It Space In Your Mix

This is an absolutely crucial step to getting your kick to sound right. No matter how great your kick sounds on its own, if it's not sitting in the mix properly, it's never going to sound as good as it should. Plain and simple. Now let's be clear, this is a fundamental principle of mixing, this doesn't just apply to the kick drum. Mixing is a relationship, not an individual effort. 

So how do we achieve that with the kick? Well, there are a few things you can do. First off, whip out that hi-pass filter and apply it to everything in your session except the kick! Ok, it's not a hard fast rule, there are other things that you want to have some low end. But for the most part, you gotta make room. I typically hi-pass guitars anywhere from 100 Hz, sometimes up to even 250 Hz. Vocals usually start around 150 Hz up, keys 120 Hz and up, etc. Clear out that low end for the kick. Sometimes, mixers will hi-pass the kick drum up higher and let the bass guitar or bass synth sit way down low. That's an approach, but I prefer to let my kick own the low sub frequencies. 

Second, get your stereo image right. Try to get your guitars, keys, synths, shakers, as many things as you can off to the sides. This can clear up room in the centre to allow the attack and thump  of the kick to come through without fighting for it. Now I will say, it's probably still a good idea to check your mix in mono, and use EQ to carve out some space for the kick. I would argue that the majority of listeners are doing so in stereo, but places such as Instagram, convert audio to mono. Also, most phone speakers are mono, so you'll have to account for that as well.
