oof, the 1990s Agatha Christie’s Poirot is often very nice but it did NOT handle anything remotely east Asian with anything resembling tact.
#ugh ugh ugh it's played for laughs too#like not all of it's bigotry but it sure is racist#cw: racism#cw: anti-asian racism#now i'm not surprised anymore at the ridiculous market scene in turn left (doctor who / 2008)#anti-asian racism has persisted acceptably in film for way longer than it should#it's not taken as seriously by white audiences compared with anti-black racism#for example my parents are not okay with blackface in film but have no problem watching yellowface movies and see nothing wrong#re the tv show:#ew i'm honestly just like *do not ever mention china ever because you can't do it without being offensive*#and i get it. these are period pieces. but i guess i've grown accustomed to makers at least acknowledging the racism of the source#and making commentary on it or at least setting aside the most egregious parts#but here we are making broken english jokes and the audience is supposed to laugh at them??#they're either lifting racism wholesale or worse adding it in#it's not charming
