Well, yes he gave this whole speech about not wanting to make friends - but they why he interacts with the other proven how easy he is to shift... but like

this whole class, both classes - have been through so much together - had a whole year to bound, having their little groups of friends. 

And there is he, the new one - probably also the weakest, lacking the most experimental. Not even knowing what the class had been through - 1A especially.

He has to be forcefully befriended at that point - it just wouldn’t work otherwise as himself wouldn’t want to interfere - might a bit hurt from his past too. 

This is especially why I hope he joins 1A - because a lot of the students there already proven ready to be friends with him.
