AU where Akashi & Furihata meet as adults when the former catches the latter in the middle of his breakdown after going through a bad experience. This unexpected reunion allows them to explore a connection that they never had back when they were still high school classmates. And the more they spend time together, the more Akashi becomes certain he should've kept in touch with Furihata all those years ago. Yet, no matter how eager Akashi is to get to know Furihata better, the latter keeps refraining himself from doing the same to the former. But why? Akashi has proven countless times that he's genuine with his actions. And what does Furihata's unwillingness to open his heart have anything to do with the incident he suffered during his elementary school years?
(I noticed often in AkaFuri fics that it's always Furi who has to do the initiative to get Aka to let down his walls, open himself up to others & let them into his life. So I thought of this role-reversal idea as a response to that)
This is really interesting because like you said, it's often Furihata trying to lower Akashi's walls...
okay, first things first: I think we must suppose that their shared history of basketball is no more- especially if they are going to have attended the same high school. However, I believe that they must have been in the same higher division class. You will have to take Akashi - student body president - from my cold dead hands, okay? I'm getting an image of a seemingly well adjusted Akashi, performing admirably in his studies and constantly ending up first in their year, he is well liked by all their peers- always invited to hang out (and sometimes he even accepts), he even kindly turns down the girls who confess to him. He is for all intents and purposes the paragon of their school and there is no way someone like him would interact with Furihata beyond what is necessary- or at least thats what Furihata tells himself.
I think mr perfect over here would always send kind smiles to those he passes or when they meet gazes, so I think Akashi would catch Furihata's eye on occasion and send him a little smile and bow of his head before Furihata glances to the side, glances back, and if Akashi was still looking at him- then he would nod back. Furihata gains the reputation of being quiet and reserved with his classmates- no one is even sure if he has friends or not. But he isn't disruptive or anything, he just, keeps to himself. And it stays that way until Akashi and him are assigned to a project together. THUS cue Akashi trying to interact with Furihata and despite his unreceptiveness, Akashi learns a bit about this curious boy like the fact that he knows a fair amount about trains, he makes his own lunches, his distance doesn't come from ill intent nor the presumed shy/reserved nature everyone in class has dubbed him with but his - at times - debilitating anxiety, and that he has a perceptive eye as well. Furihata is well caught up on the classroom gossip for someone who never converses with their classmates, he is also the only one who calls Akashi out for the dark circles under his eyes.
This all culminates in Akashi thinking, 'Furihata is an intriguing individual. He is thoughtful and kind and funny, yet he declines my every attempt to become friends outside of this project.' The project ends before long and things go back to normal except when Akashi glances over to Furihata, he doesn't immediately look away. And Akashi can recognize a losing fight when he sees one, he decides to wait until the next year- their third year- in about a month to renew efforts to become friends, after all change is often incremental. However Akashi didn't expect to not see Furihata's name on their class roaster, or any class roaster for that matter. Furihata Kouki moved, and Akashi Seijuurou was the only one to care.
Skip to the present, around six to ten years later, and I will tell you- it is almost impossible to hang out with people you don't regularly see at work or school or your apartment. As an adult everyone has their own responsibilities and when you do have free time, it is often eaten up by housework or "recovery/recharging" So i'm only really seeing them running into each other if like, Akashi hears Furihata have a panic attack in the bathroom at work or if while entering his apartment he sees Furihata's crumpled form at the other end of the hallway crying into his hands.
But fuck it, I have a trope that isn't often used in fanfic so lets use it! Akashi runs into Furihata at a supermarket where Furihata is standing infront of the frozen foods crying. (also i forgot to mention it but i think it would be nice to have some parallelism of like, in high school Akashi helped Furihata once when he was in the middle of a panic attack) Akashi comforts him and when Furihata has enough awareness and realizes who is actually beside him he says, "A- Akashi-kun?" "Hello, Furihata-kun." I'm picturing Akashi assisting Furihata with the rest of his purchases, helping him take them back to his place, and coming face to face with Furihata's rude, offputting roommate. Furihata thanks him for his help but is clearly trying to get Akashi to leave as soon as possible. The following conversation happens at his doorstep:
"I had wished to exchange phone numbers in high school but your family moved before I could do so. It is one of my greatest regrets. I do not wish to make the same mistake, Furihata-kun."
"... You aren't going to leave unless I give you my phone number?"
"It sounds particularly unsavory when you say it like that. Perhaps, the promise of coffee, instead?"
"If I say yes, will you leave?"
Akashi smiles, a noncommittal answer.
"Fine. Um, next Wednesday at the cafe on 35th and Oimiwa, 2 pm."
"Excellent. I look forward to catching up with you. Farewell, Furihata-kun."
And not even ten seconds after Furihata closes the door does his "roommate" aka his life-in on and off again boyfriend have more than a few words for him. Hence begins Akashi's entanglement in Furihata's tumultuous relationship and self esteem issues causing him to believe that this toxic relationship is all that he deserves.
(btw im high keying implying that the elementary school incident has to do with bullies calling him gay and beating him up and other homophobic things, leading to him being closed off from his peers and contributing to his below sea level confidence and why he stays with someone who regularly makes him cry let alone have a melt down in the middle of a grocery store AND to be saved by his high school crush- talk about embarrassing AND THEN said man comes to his apartment looking like well a model straight from a magazine, asking for his number, making plans to meet up again- all while his toxic, emotionally abusive, and manipulative ex/boyfriend is in the same room)
Thats my take on it, and oh god, this would be a nail biter, very anxiety heavy

thoughts on a court of mist and fury *spoilers*
***** lots of spoilers folks *****
- MY GIRL FEYRE IS READING!! SHES READING LIKE REGULARLY AND CASUALLY IM SO PROUD
- RHYSAND MY LOVE I TAKE BACK ALL THE BAD THINGS I SAID IN BOOK ONE AND YOU ARE A BABY THAT NEEDS TO BE LOVED AND PROTECTED AND DESERVE PEACE AND QUIET AND MORE LOVE
- tamlin needs therapy like pronto; we dont stan a unsupportive partner and partner who is unwilling to share pain!! CANCEL TAMLIN 2020
- rhys popping up during the wedding scene was *chef’s kiss* and i noticed that he didn’t “claim” her as he said he would for like three months after everything. i suspect he was being a good person and literally letting her live her life. also for loving someone, tamlin was super chill and just kind of let her go??? idk i thought there would be more of a fight??? when feyre was literally like why are your claws retracting man?? fight for me??? hello??? but then again rhys is definitely more powerful than tamlin and probs some unspoken laws and such between high lords i guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ anyways tamlin aint shit
- page 296-298! fucken shook me to my core. that self awareness, that confrontation, she identified the core of everything and it was such a turning point and im just so proud of her!!! She's recognizing her traumas and is healing!!!!!!!!!!
- yeah i immediately ship cassian and nesta; i hope she fucks shit up in the next book  😀 😀 😀 😀
- maybe az and mor are truly the slowest of slow burns   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- i pictured pollution from good omens as how Amren is suppose to look like
- rhys is such a strong leader and im just -- baby deserves all the love. He's really good at plotting. He really made feyre learn all these things so they can nurture their love but also be a strategic advantage its interesting that even tho theres love there he still treats her like a weapon
- the joy in his rhys eyes when they winnowed into his regular ass town house that feels super lived in. and his friends banging on the door like he isn’t the feared night court high lord that he is. that was so refreshing to see that hes a regular person and not that high lord man who lives in a near empty mansion. he puts on a mask for everyone but he himself is just a regular fae.
- reading about the peace that velaris was able to live through was beautiful. i imagined a city like san francisco with the hills and views of the ocean but kind of like the peace found in super small towns or cities in asia; maybe even some european cities (which is prob where this location is inspired by but i haven’t visited many euro cities). the scenes of ppl dining out, making art and music and just chilling is so lovely esp given our current pandemic. art is so treasured there and im like thats the epitome of a great society isn’t it? being able to do things because you just can without the pain of financial insecurity, civil unrest, etc. i definitely would love and die and for a society like that. its just so wonderful. i was filled w happiness while reading those scenes. :)
Tumblr media
- rhys and his inner circle taking feyre out into the town and just being casual. nobody treats them like theyre royalty or anything special. theyre just a regular group of friends who enjoy hanging out. its super nice and nostalgia inducing esp during this pandemic when friends are so far away and not like it used to be.
- when rhys immediately saw how under weight and dead freye looked when she was in spring court -- AND IT WAS THE FIRST THING HE SAID TO HER WHEN HE SAW HER THROUGH THE DOOR WHILE TAMLIN DIDNT FUCKEN NOTICE
- i also take back my frustrations in book 1 when freye always wondering around the grounds in spring court esp during calanmai. i thought it was because the author needed to move the story forward but its just freye. she doesnt sit still and now that shes w rhys, we are seeing soooooo many things about prythian and thats beautiful. tamlin was truly a hinderance huh
- rhys sent her music when she was in the cell in Under The Mountain which was found in velaris. maybe he wasnt risking a lot but he just showed her a glimpse of the forbidden world right under aramantha’s nose holy shit he saved her from destruction!
Tumblr media
- when rhys had his nightmare and feyre came to comfort him and kissed him on the cheeks and gave him such tenderness made my heart sing~
Tumblr media
- rhys is literally opposite of tamlin is soooo many ways. RHYS DID THINGS OUT OF LOVE, WHILE TAMLIN DID THINGS FOR LOVE. everything from how rhys made sure feyre can grow into who she is meant to be, to how he introduces her to his friends and how he interacts w everyone in his court, how he handles pain, everything is so different than tamlin. tamlin feels pain and just bulldoze over things, doesn’t think about how his actions are hurting others even as he is hurting. he doesn’t talk, he doesn’t share, he doesn’t try to get himself or feyre out of this misery and just sees threats everywhere and hits them. he was also supper passive honestly. no doubt hes riddled w guilt and grief but can’t figure out how to handle it so he uses feyre as his crutch where if he can “save” her he will be free smh
- rhys PAYS feyre!! HE GAVE HER FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE AND RESPECT FOR HER WORK!! THE INDEPENDENCE THAT TAMLIN DIDNT FUCKEN GIVE.
- THOSE NOTES THEY SEND TO EACH OTHER SINCE FREYE CAN READ AND WRITE NOW
- Ianthe was sus from the beginning!! i knew it!! although i did bet she was gonna sleep w tamlin on the side. But she's a lot worst so we don't like her either
- the throne room scene was steamy af this time its fine because there was ~consent~ and also because we see the dynamic and growth between the two and how they work together. this was great although I was kind of like pls get a room tho
- RHYS SMILING!!! FEYRE AND RHYS LAUGHING TOGETHER UGH I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
Tumblr media
- THEY ARE MATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FEYRE AND RHYS FOUND EACH OTHER AND HAD SO MANY SHARED TRAUMAS AND WORKED IT OUT TOGETHER AND GREW TOGETHER AND LEARNED ABOUT EACH OTHERS QUIRKS AND ITS JUST LOVE IN ITS PUREST FORM UGH THAT SCENE WHERE RHYS WAS CRYING AND FEYRE HEATED UP FOOD FOR THE BABY AHH MY HEARTTTTT  MY WHOLE ENTIRE HEARTTTTTT IS BURSTING WITH LOVEEEEEE
- LUCIEN AND ELAINE HOLY FUCK WHAT A LEFT FIELDER i hope this is the push that will propel lucien to defy tamlin. going back to the contrast between how tamlin vs his court and rhys vs his court, rhys has a group of unwavering loyal friends and are treated equally esp letting them joke around so much and it feels like a casual group of friends hanging out. tamlin has just as much loyalty from lucien but theres still a power structure that tamlin maintains. luciens words doesn’t have much weight whereas rhys’s friends do. both tamlin and rhys have so much power and sway and similarity in traumas and tragedy but both execute things completely differently. tamlin only wants to upload what he is familiar with, maybe what he thinks his father wants whereas rhys actively tries to think of something better, to change the system regardless of how hard it is.
- tamlin you dumbass. He didn't learn from amarantha. He again let his pride fuck over a bunch of other ppl. He shat on amarantha and fucked over his court. Now he fucked the rest of prythian and human world by bargaining w the king. Smh goodbye tamlin
- I straight up knew the queens were bad!!! I knew they had to be plotting something. The sixth is "ill" my ass.
- LADY OF THE NIGHT COURT LETS GO FEYRE AND WOOWW WE STAN A MAN BREAKING TRADITIONS AND SUPPORTING EQUALITY
- when hybern was destroying velaris. I WAS GONNA THROW HANDS BRO. I'm glad we saw the extend of how powerful feyre could be and how she was clever and we can really see how she's completely different from before. She has bite and fight in her and it's so refreshing!
- how about we let az and cassian live in peace. Those boys had to deal w the blunt of literally everything. from being the only shield in valeris to poison/hurt wings against the king, just beat up all the time 🥺
- suriel is their version of a wikipedia
--
I read all 600 damn pages in like 2.5 days and I was loving it the entire time! My heart sored when feyre and Rhys were getting close and starting to break down their walls and really connect. This was a truly good enemies to lovers, slow burn tale and the drama is so great. There were good stakes that changes a character and their behavior and a good balance of action and excitement but at the same time so many little moments that let u see the character and how they interact w each other and the world. a lot of big plot moments, slice of life moments, a bit of romance and comedy. overall, an amazing book but super long. thus far this is my favorite book and im hoping the rest of the books can be just as charming and lovely but not too heart breaking. i hope rhys and feyre makes it. i cannot predict what to expect in the other books in the series (isn’t there gonna be 8 books total???)

Gal pals practice.
Random derps with random generators. Working up the nerve to write these three. Just need to establish them as characters.
She won the war.
"I'm telling you - the guy was a complete stranger, just walked up and gave me the bag!" Willow glared at the horribly off colour monstrosity they called a bag. Julie gripped the small braid kept for tiny passengers tightly.
Sophie was the first to prod it however. “DON’T! WE DON’T KNOW IF IT’LL EXPLODE!” Julie protested. Hopping up and down upon Willows shoulder. The three women recoiled farther away as the offending sack moved.
Two beady little eyes poked out from it’s surface, as well as a floppy set of ears. “Aww. Now there. See girls? Nothing to worry about.” Sophie beamed to them. Both human and sprite just stared incredulously at her.
“Soph. Do you remember the mimic? Because I remember the mimic.” Willow deadpanned. “I don’t want another mimic.”
“Oh you and Creaky get along now don’t you?” The Llamia slithered off to her warm little book nook with little concern.
“I remember the mimic.” Julie grumbled. Leaning in to whisper in the humans ear. “The moment she’s not paying attention. We send it to the outer realms.” Willow gave a curt nod.
“I heard that.”
As it turned out. The offending bag monster was simply a Kobold. An angry, screaming Kobold. Whom Sophie couldn’t get enough of. “Julie?”
“Yeah?” The sprite moaned dejectedly.
“I seam to recall instill a ‘no pets’ rule. Did I not?” Willow spooned a bit of her tea into a silver thimble. Sitting with Julie.
“You did. She broke it. You gave up after the sock monster.” They both let off a long sigh. “It was a damn good effort though. While it lasted.”
“Mmph.”
Good intentions.
“Julie!” That motherly tone mixed with outrage caused the tiny woman to throw her pen. Ruining her hours of work. Turning on a dime (Which, at her size, was really just awkward fumbling in a circle) Julie clapped her hands behind her with an innocent look.
“That. Is. Illegal!” The snake woman hissed. Slamming her finger against the still wet ink of the half forged signature.
“Well. Yes. But it makes sense in context! I swear!” She waved her hands in front of her. Trying her hardest to stay quiet while at the same time speak loudly enough to be heard.
“Oh~? And how’s that?” The Llamia leaned in. Flicking her tongue out frequently. Just waiting to detect the faintest hint of a lie.
“Will. That little....I mean. She says she has enough medicine to get over it. And that humans get that sort of illness regularly. But what if she didn’t. You know?” Julie wavered her hands.
“...We just have to trust that she knows more than we do. Julie. I understand. Willow is your host. But that doesn’t mean you can run her life.” The llamia lay on her belly, getting on the same level as her little friend.
Julie flopped down on her backside. “But.”
“But nothing.” Both women yelped. Glaring at the thin wall separating the rooms. Willow having apparently heard EVERYTHING. “I’m fine Ju-HACK COUGH-...Ew.”
“...Julie? Carry on.”
Girls night!
She'd only given in because she was lonely but she was enjoying herself. Where as most women went out partying, these three went out... Coffee touring. According to Willow it was a great way to get that rush from a bar crawl  Without the constant threat of roofies.
Sophie had to wear an extra layer over her scaled half but the night was going well. Julie kept rambling on, hanging off the braid specially kept as a form of seat belt for the tiny woman. This time it was something about... Anime?
“Oh sure if you WANT to go old school. But the chick has a literal deity stuffed in her. Of course she’s going to be the strongest. Now. If you want to talk strongest Slayers character. Goury!” Willow returned. Ah. Sophie could weigh in on this one.
“What? But he’s just a human. Not even a magical one.” Sophie sidled up.
“W-No. That the whole point. He still goes toe to toe with all that stuff. And it took a cheater of a monster to knock the sucker down.” Willow returned with a wicked grin. “Plus, you know. Sword of light and all.”
Julie had gone silent before kicking Willow in the ear. “By that logic. There’s one better. Prince Phil! Beat an entire army of monsters. Bare handed. More than one occasion.”
The ladies paused. Then grumbled in their defeat.
