“Maybe your knuckles weren’t bleeding, but there was ice,” Timothée Chalamet tells Dame Eileen Atkins. He is recounting, with no small amount of awe, how he first came to hear of the legendary 85-year-old actor with whom he is about to appear at The Old Vic. “I gave him the worst time of his life,” says Atkins, bristling at the memory, before merrily launching into several candid, very dame-like stories from her time on set – “That was a nightmare movie. A nightmare.”

It is a Saturday afternoon in late February, and the two actors – one a titan of British theatre with an eight-decade career; the other, Hollywood’s most in-demand young leading man, with an insatiable Instagram following – have just finished being photographed together for Vogue. Chalamet, 24, in louche, low-slung denim and a white T-shirt, has folded his Bambi limbs into a chair next to Atkins, whose hawkish frame, in a navy jumper and jeans, belies her 85 years.

“Do you like being called Tim or Timothée or what?” Atkins asks in her warm but brisk RP, all trace of her Tottenham upbringing erased.

“Whatever works,” he replies in a bright American accent, that shock of chestnut hair falling into his eyes. “Anything.”

“So you won’t object to ‘darling’? I call everyone darling. I’m told I mustn’t say it these days.” He assures her he is fine with it: “It’s a rite of passage, being called darling by Dame Eileen Atkins.”

“You always, always, have to put the dame in, otherwise you can’t address me,” she jokes.

It’s good the two are getting all this sorted now. A couple of days after our interview they will begin rehearsals for a seven-week run of Amy Herzog’s play 4000 Miles, in which they star as a grandmother and grandson, each quietly dealing with their own grief. Chalamet takes on the role of Leo Joseph-Connell, a somewhat lost 21-year-old who experiences a tragedy while on a 4,000-mile-long cycle ride with his best friend. Atkins plays Vera Joseph, his widowed 91-year-old grandmother, upon whose Manhattan doorstep Leo unexpectedly arrives in the middle of the night, unsure of where else to go. What follows is a wonderful, and wonderfully witty, study in human relationships, a portrait of two generations with decades between them trying to make sense of the world.

Its stars, who’ve met twice previously, in New York last year, are still very much getting to know each other – and are confident in the appeal. “There are things like this play – hoping I don’t butcher it – where you can just sit back and go, ‘Oh, this is a delicious meal,’” says Chalamet. Atkins agrees. “I have a phrase in mind that I shouldn’t really say because it’s going to sound terrible in print.” Which is? “I find it a dear little play, a really dear little play. I think it should be very moving. But who knows? We might f**k it up.”

It’s unlikely. Atkins has been a regular on The Old Vic’s stage since the 1960s, going toe-to-toe with greats from Laurence Olivier to Alec Guinness, and fellow dames (and close friends) Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Chalamet, meanwhile, is a relative novice, with only two professional plays under his belt. But since his turn as Elio in 2017’s Call Me by Your Name (for which he was Oscar-nominated), his celluloid rise has been meteoric. Roles in Lady Bird, Little Women, The King and Wes Anderson’s upcoming The French Dispatch have not only earned him the slightly fraught badge of “heart-throb”, but proved him to be among the most captivating actors of his generation.

He says he couldn’t resist the opportunity to come to the capital. “There was something exciting about doing a play that feels very New York in London,” Chalamet explains of taking on the part. He’s a diehard theatre fan, too, revealing he saw the six-and-a-half-hour epic The Inheritance – twice. “There are films like The Dark Knight or Punch-Drunk Love or Parasite that can give you a special feeling. But nothing will be like seeing Death of a Salesman on Broadway with Philip Seymour Hoffman or A Raisin in the Sun with Denzel Washington.”

Herzog’s writing particularly spoke to him. “Leo’s in a stasis that was very appealing to me,” he continues. “We find our crisis in moments of stasis, but there’s an irony to it when you’re young, because the law of the land would have you think that to be young is to be having fun, to be coming into your own. But as everyone at this age who’s going through it knows, it’s often a shitshow.”

It’s safe to say that, in casting terms, director Matthew Warchus, also artistic director of The Old Vic, has hit the jackpot. He first took the play to Atkins three years ago, but it was only towards the end of 2019 that Chalamet came on board. When it was announced, in December, that Hollywood’s heir apparent to Leonardo DiCaprio would be making his London stage debut, the news was met with a level of hysteria not usually associated with the 202-year-old theatre’s crowd.

“Oh, my friends have told me who the audience is,” Atkins chimes in when I ask who they think will be coming to see the show. “It’s 40 per cent girls who want to go to bed with Timothée, it’s 40 per cent men who want to go to bed with Timothée, and it’s 20 per cent my old faithfuls.” Is Chalamet prepared for the onslaught? “I think it will be 100 per cent Eileen’s faithfuls,” he demurs.

On the surface, they can seem quite the odd couple. Chalamet, raised in Manhattan by an American dancer-turned-realtor mother and French father, an in-house editor at the United Nations, may be living a breathless, nomadic movie-star life but there’s an iron core of Gen Z earnestness there. He arrives on set with minimal fuss, even deciding to wear the clothes he came in for one shot, before knocking out some push-ups, politely ordering an omelette and generally being divinely well-mannered.

He turns on the star power for the camera, though, and I can confirm it’s as dazzling up close as it is on the red carpet, where he has, famously, casually redrawn the rules for male dressing. From that Louis Vuitton sparkly bib at the 2018 Golden Globes, to a dove-grey satin Haider Ackermann tux at Venice last year, he’s a true fashion darling. Then, of course, there’s his dating life – from Lourdes Ciccone Leon to Lily-Rose Depp – that remains an endless source of fascination to millions worldwide. (All this, it must be said, is of significantly less interest to Dame Eileen.)

Atkins started dance lessons aged three, shortly before the start of the Second World War. By 12, she was performing professionally in pantomime, not far from where she grew up in north London, the youngest daughter in a working-class family. A fast-established theatre star, wider fame didn’t find her until late in life. Despite memorable turns in Upstairs, Downstairs and Gosford Park, it was the 2000 television hits Cranford and Doc Martin, when she was in her early seventies, that finally made her a household name. Today, she lives alone in west London, since her second husband, the TV and film producer Bill Shepherd, died in 2016. She has often spoken of being happily childless, and has zero time for razzmatazz.

And yet, despite their differences, the pair appear perfectly matched. They already have their grandmother-grandson dynamic down pat. Atkins does a fine line in mischievous eyebrow-raising, and at one point recites a limerick that is, honestly, so rude it almost makes her co-star blush. Chalamet, meanwhile, is politeness personified, still trying to work out his thoughts on various subjects, less inclined to give so much of himself away. There is a physical likeness, too, in their delicate features and fine bone structure. They share a naturally melancholic look, one that melts away when they laugh.

Their upcoming play, which premiered to rapturous reviews Off-Broadway in 2011, “about a block” from Chalamet’s high school, LaGuardia, could have been written for them. “Other than not being American, I’m very like the old woman,” says Atkins of the Pulitzer-shortlisted play. “I can’t be bothered to learn the internet.” If there’s one thing she won’t tolerate in rehearsals, it’s people on their phones. That’s the only thing that will “piss me off ”, she says, brusquely.

Ah, phones. Are they really the symbol of generational disconnect? “It’s easy to point to these things,” Chalamet says, tapping his phone on the table, “as the cause or the symptom, but I think my generation is a guinea pig generation of sorts. We’re figuring out the pros and cons and limits of technology.”

Equally, Atkins is keen to distance herself from some of the criticism levelled at her age group. “There’s a saying isn’t there: if you’re not very left wing when you’re young, you’re heartless. And if you’re not very right wing when you’re old, you’re foolish. I’m not political, but I’m not with this government I can assure you – and I’m not with Brexit. I wanted to wear a sweater saying ‘I did not vote Brexit’, because it was all old people who did. Not me, not me,” she snaps. “I went on the march.”

Both are in agreement that intergenerational friendships are too rare these days. “So. Important,” Chalamet says, hitting the table between each word. “There is so much to learn from people who have walked the path of life. That’s why I’m so looking forward to these next couple of months.”

Atkins is thoughtful on the matter. “I don’t miss the fact I don’t have children, but I do envy my friends who have grandchildren,” she says. “About five or six years ago I met a couple of young people – they are just about 30 this year – and, do you know, we go out together. And people immediately say to me, ‘Are these your grandchildren?’ And I say, ‘No.’ And they say, ‘Your godchildren?’ And I say, ‘No, they’re just friends.’ Everybody thinks there is something weird about all three of us. They just don’t get it. But the boy makes me laugh more than anybody and the girl is enchanting. I have more fun with them than I do with almost anybody else.”

I remind Atkins about her description of today’s youth as being overly serious. “I do call them the New Puritans, yes,” she says, before motioning to her young co-star. “He probably drinks like a fish.”

Chalamet, currently single, is remaining tight-lipped about plans for his new London life, and how many late-night manoeuvres in Soho or Peckham it may involve. “I’ve got friends here, which is nice. But I’m here for this – to be terrified at The Old Vic.”

Before we leave, there is a final thing to clear up – Atkins’ aforementioned limerick. “Do you know about the Colin Farrell situation?” Eileen asks Timothée. No, comes his reply. “Better get it over with now because someone will tell you,” she says, proceeding to explain how, when she was “69, about to be 70” and filming Ask the Dust with a 27-year-old Farrell, “he made a pass at me. He came to my hotel room. He was enchanting. I let him chat for two hours, thoroughly enjoying it, but no not that. He was very cross I didn’t.”

But then, she explains guiltily, she later told the story during “some stupid TV show” (Loose Women), where despite her best efforts at keeping Farrell’s identity secret, the internet did its thing and news got out. An apology to Farrell was required. “So I left a limerick on Colin’s phone…” she says. She clears her throat: “There once was a **** of a dame…” she begins, in her imitable theatrical timbre, before reeling off one of the filthiest rhymes I’ve ever heard.

There is a moment of stunned laughter. “Wow, that’s sincerely amazing,” comes Chalamet’s response, as Atkins finishes the verse. He gives her a solemn oath: “I promise I won’t hit on you.”

Some classes, like languages and sciences, will have 4 or 5 credit hours, since you are either in labs or have more class time to focus on the material

Most classes stay uniform throughout your tenure. Colleges offer you to take a minimum of 12 credit hours (4 classes) to be a full time student, and for upwards to 18 credits (6 classes) which you need special permission to take. I know classes seem like too little, but you're pending 12 hours a week in class, not to meantion the higher course work, so PLEASE take a standard 12 credit hour semester your first year in college to get the feel for it. I went went community College for a year so that is why I took 5 classes last semester

As for outside of school, I spend anywhere between 3 to 4 hours a day on homework and studying. This is NOT including my personal reading and masterpost creations. Last semester I spent about 4+ because of classes.

COLLEGE IS HARD. ESPECIALLY FOR HISTORY MAJORS.

History is a lot of writing. I have papers due every week. By the time you finish your first year in college (two semesters) you should be able to properly write, cite, and prove a thesis for your paper. You are required to take writing classes, so pay attention to those. It's saved my life

History majors are also expected to think critically for themselves. Sure, you can memorieze a bunch of dates, but you need to understand why, the causes and effects, and finally, how does it tie in to the modern day? Why does this specific event have significance in our lives?

This is why history professors on the higher level classes (3000s and 4000s) are not going to give you exams. They will assign you a fuck ton of papers. My history class last year had 5 mini essays, which were 600-700 words long each, and a final paper, 2000+. These teachers don't need to know if you know when the Americans declared independence, they want to know why it is important, how they got there, and why it happened to begin with

History majors are usually required to take a foreign language as well. Usually it's about three semesters worth. When studying history, try to pick a language that matches your preferred region you like to study. Like European history? Take German or French. Like South American history? Take Spanish. If you're like me and like American history and want to specialize in it, take Latin or Spanish. Personally, I'm doing Latin

As a history major you will study things you won't like. Ex: I studied medieval Europe last semester and this semester, hated every second, but got an A. Just try to remember that it is history, and there will be things that shock you, horrify you, bore you, and make you jump up and down

Not a lot has changed since the previous year, so I’m not going to bother to post the graphs.  All my classes are growing, except the Royals, which is to be expected since it is a single household.  (The graph for the Royal population is very symmetrical, peaking with 12 sims in year 3.)

The net gain of sims in the kingdom was 46 which is nearly the same as Year 5 with 48.  The growth rate might be leveling out.

The proportions of each class have stayed mostly the same since the previous year.  Royals went from 4% to 2%, Nobles from 45% to 44%, Merchants from 30% to 31%, and Peasants from 22% to 23%.

I am always tweaking my points system, partially because I forget how I did things previously.  (Looking back at my previous year-end-reviews, there are a lot of ideas I’d forgotten . . .) Other than making some changes to the numbers and formulas, I decided to add a line of succession bonus for my upper classes and an age deduction for everyone.  My points are really heavy on aspiration, which is naturally going to be higher for older sims, so I subtracted each sims’ age times 10 from their score in the interest of helping younger sims (though I’m not sure that it does much.)

At the end of Year 6, I had 24 sims who were in line to the throne. I added bonus points ranging from 500-0 in increments of 25.  Twins got the same number of points as each other.  This just left Biana and Olivia Burgos at the bottom of the list that ended up with no points.  The bonus points are not set, but will be adjusted annually.

Merchant Households

I still haven’t quite figured out how to use the points for my merchant class.  The individual points for each sims is easy enough.  I calculate the merchants and peasants in the same way, but I’m not sure how to calculate the business points.  It gets complicated when I have households that run multiple businesses and businesses that were passed down from one generation to the next.

2000 is the threshold value for my Noble class.  The only merchants that have a personal score over 2000 are Garen Durden, who was born a Noble, but he and his wife Pasiphae average a score below 2000, and Justice, who was promoted from the Peasants at the end of the last year.   But having over 2000 is why he got promoted last time.   Even with -500 for being born a peasant and -610 for his age, his score is 2881, which is higher than a lot of my Nobles.  His businesses are low ranked though.  Since his personal score is so high, I ended up giving him an income like I did with the Nobles.

You know, I don't remember Summer Musashi or Summer Nero or Summer Tamamo or Summer Artoria or Summer Atler being this gimmicky...honestly not even sure if Bunnytoria counts. Kiara swoops into being the latest 5-star Summer Servant, and comes in with one of the most absolutely bloated kits in the entire game. I have her and can barely be arsed to remember everything she does. To start however, and to make things simpler, let's look at her fundamentals.

Her base stats aren't amazing. Like most Moon Cancers, she has very high HP and more middling ATK. Her ATK isn't that bad, but I'll never say no to having more ATK on a Servant who has an AoE NP. Her NP generation is...very average. She'll generate on average 34% of her NP gauge with her AQA chain, which isn't spectacular really for her card set. Her star generation isn't great either, with her best chains generating 15 crit stars on average. Blame her single 3 hit Quick for that.

Moving onto her skills...first we have Mermaid's Flesh EX. It gives her a powerful 5 turns Guts on a 6 turn cooldown, which is already enough to give praise, but it also removes her debuffs, gives her a decent HP regen, boosts her NP damage, and gives her a unique buff. I know I talked up Cu Chulainn's Guts buff when it was revealed, but this makes it look laughable in comparison. Her unique buff gives her another unique buff that lasts for 4 turns, ever turn for 4 turns. What this means is at Level 10, and honestly probaby at least Level 6, you will always have some number of this unique buff active all the time, since the last one will last a couple turns in. This buff is used to power up her second and third skills, which is the primary gimmick of Kiara and her unique one. This skill is fantastic, its a great survival option, and does basically everything else you want.

Her second skill is Supernatural Power (Ink), of which I am pretty strongly annoyed that Kiara gets a stronger version of this, at base, than Hokusai does. Why did that happen? Anyways, this is an NP charge with a star bomb baked into it, granting 30% of her NP gauge and 20 crit stars at max. On a 5 turn cooldown, this is a rather fantastic skill that helps to remedy both her average NP generation and poor star generation. Of course...that's before rank-up. With one Skill Rank Up buff used, the charge is boosted to 40% and the star bomb boosted to 25, and with two, it becomes 50% and 30 stars. At max skill rank, Kiara has access to one of the most powerful NP charges in the game, and it's only really slow for its first use, since you should always have some Skill Rank buffs active from that point on. It basically solves her NP and star generation problems every time its used.

Clam Palace gives Kiara not one, but two skills with a ton of different effects. It gives the party 1 hit of evasion for 3 turns, being a slightly weaker Harp of Healing in that regard, removes Ignore Evasion buffs from the enemy, inflicts a unique mental debuff that reduces crit chance, reduces defense, and Arts resistance. This skill is her damage steroid, and its very good for what it does. It turns on the special damage clause on her NP, boosts her Arts damage by 44%, 56.25%, or 69% depending on the rank, and is even a solid support option, although one that's not immediately available. The cooldown is even reasonable for this skill. It's very good.

Even her passives are good. Extra Arts performance, NP damage, and Defense all are appreciated, especially since they're at very high levels for passive skills. It's truly something.

Onto Kiara's NP, it does okay damage if the enemy isn't inflicted with a mental debuff. Thanks to her class and low ATK, it actually doesn't do as much as one would hope, even with her steroids factored in. It's enough to kill hands, at least. But when mental debuffs are involved...the damage goes up pretty significantly. I've heard from sources I trust that this is an effective damage buff, so not only do I have to edit the Quirinus analysis, but it makes Kiara's damage very strong, more than doubling it. Her NP will do about 68k damage on average to neutral targets with just the 3 Bewitchment buffs her 3rd skill gives, which is quite notable. It's not as powerful as say, Arjuna Alter, but it's comparable. With proper supports, Kiara can also function as a decent boss killer, since her steroids are a little on the low side and she can hit some pretty high damage in the right team comp, but her efficacy compared to ST NPs is questionable.

Onto looping discussion for a moment, it's possible. Due to the way Kiara works though, it's a bit complicated to determine how to optimally farm enemies. Since all of her steroids except for the NP damage on Mermaid's Flesh are debuffs, you need to hold them for the final wave, especially since with two stacks of Rank Up buffs she'll have a maximum power NP to use. At NP 1, this will restrict her to farming Rider and Caster mobs since she can't get the necessary amount of overkill hits from even neutral NP mobs like Sabers, and even then, this has a limit of about 40,000 HP since she'll need 6 hits of overkill in total, and requires the use of Fragment of 2004's NP gen buff. With Sign of Smiling Face or Royal Icing, she can farm Saber enemies with less than 30,000 HP optimally, and again with Fragment of 2004. With Assassin and Berserker enemies, with Royal Icing / Sign of Smiling Face, she'll need to use her 3rd skill turn 1 along with Fragment of 2004 to farm, which will dramatically lower her NP damage turn 3. If you have Kiara at a higher NP level, she's far more efficient at looping, and actually becomes a pretty great looper due to being able to largely ignore strong wave 3 enemies. At NP5, she'll do more than enough damage to be able to easily beat any mob with her Skill 3 up.

Support Options: Kiara really should be used with pretty much every single Arts support you can throw at her. They'll boost his damage, her consistency, and in many cases her survivability. It really doesn't get more straight forward than that. You can do gimmicky teams with Fuuma, Summer Abby, and another Kiara focused on mental debuffs, but it really isn't that worth it to give her a bit of a stronger NP.

Command Code: You'll want to focus on Command Codes that increase the star absorption of her Arts cards, in order to give her better access to crits, and NP generating codes. The majority of Kiara's damage is focused in her NP, so she doesn't benefit from card damage boosting command codes as much as other Servants.

Craft Essences: Really depends on the team you're using her in. For the majority of situations, The Black Grail, Royal Icing, and Sign of Smiling Face are her strongest options available, dramatically boosting her damage. Dive to Blue, Sumo CE, and Painting Summer are also good options thanks to her delayed 50% NP charge, and she can even use Kaleidoscope for instant NPs if that's what you need. Favor the first batch of CEs on dedicated Arts teams, and the second batch for general use teams.

Competition: Space Ishtar is, surprisingly enough, Kiara's main competition. Kiara's advantage over Space Ishtar is her ridiculous NP damage potential, but Spishtar is a much easier Servant to use for farming. Kiara's NP damage is so good that she comes out as the best Moon Cancer DPS, outshadowing everything else. Both BBs and Jinako still have their benefits, but they can't really claim to provide stiff competition in the damage department comparatively.

Pros: -Three incredible skills with powerful and varied effects -Guts, HP regen, and Evasion give Kiara surprisingly survivability -Large NP charge and star bomb -NP damage is very high for an AoE Servant and she can easily trigger her effective damage buff -Solid looping potential -Can solo well thanks to her Guts and HP regen, especially versus Avengers

Cons: -Getting the most out of her skills is difficult thanks to the delayed nature of her Rank up buffs -Looping potential is reliant on NP level, low NP levels will farm less effectively than usual -Moon Cancer class is bad offensively, only hitting Avengers SE -Skill 3 is nothing but debuffs, meaning she generally will only hit hard for one wave -NP damage is much more mediocre without Skill 3

Kiara is probably the best offensive Moon Cancer we have right now. Her damage is pretty great, she can farm well in Arts teams, and she has good survival options. Despite her flaws natural to her kit, she's a very strong 5-star thanks to her great kit and good NP. Learning to use her might take some time, but you'll be better for it.

My mom just fully admitted that she’s known that I was most likely on the Autism spectrum since I was about 3 and she ignored teachers, therapists, and a child psychiatrist for my entire life because she believes I was a “punishment from god for her sins”. And that’s why she doesn’t like me because I was sent to punish her for things she did before I was born and she tried to “make me as normal as possible” so people wouldn’t know.

What. The. Actual. FUCK.

So I’m sitting here struggling to get an autism diagnosis and am gonna have to foot a $2000-$4000 bill for it as it’s not covered once you’re over 18 and trying to get some resources and support as I can’t function in a work place enough to support myself, I can NOT live on my own because I can’t function alone and would end up dead or homeless in a month, and I only ever truly completed grades 1-3 and then was “homeschooled” for 4-9 because my mom was sick of teachers telling her I needed extra help and suggesting I see a psychologist for autism (which she also just admitted) and then faked and cheated my way through 10-12 in an alternative school just so I could get a diploma so I could get a semi decent job. So basically in all subjects I work at about a 6th grade level according to an assessment I did at the alternative school when they saw I was struggling. But I refused help because I just wanted to get it done and I had to finish two grades that year to graduate as I was 19 and wouldn’t be able to come back the next year. Q1 :   if  you  could  write  your  character  your  way  in  their  own  movie ,   what  would  it  be  called ,  what  style  would  it  be  filmed  in ,  and  what  would  it  be  about ?

 The Outsider doesn’t deserve a movie. But if he had one it would have some sort of one-word title that helped no one guess what it was about. Like.. “Time” or “Forever”. It would be some sort of ridiculous indie film that is trying so hard to intellectual that all concept of linear storytelling is lost. Symbolism takes the place of narrative. And you leave the theater feeling as if you’ve lost days instead of a mere hour. It’s supposed to be about what it’s like to be him in the Void. And maybe it is. No one can be certain.

Q2 :   What  would  their  soundtrack / score  sound  like ?

 Ethereal for want of a better term. With that sort of undercurrent of creepy as shit. The sort of music that either has no lyrics or the lyrics contain no chorus. It’s just this story that’s being sang in airy tones over deep music.

  He wouldn’t leave me alone. I tried to get my bff in rl to finish the game and save me from The Outsider but they never did and I had no choice but to find someone else to satisfy him.

 He’s.... neat? I dunno. I played the first game and I think I only got through some levels because I kept telling myself that there would be another shrine if I could just get to it. How I get my muses is dumb. They show up in my head and declare themselves deserving of my time >.<

University classes are usually classified by difficulty so like

1000-level courses are your introductory stuffs, 2000 and 3000 are considerably harder, and 4000-level are the super hard courses for those who are like- about to graduate

first semester: grades + some thoughts

hi friends! so, I just finished my first semester of college (aka university to those of you not in the US). after a week of finals and lots of stress, I’m now at home, safely ensconced in the couch doing as little as possible. however, final grades were due today, so I thought I’d take a moment to run through what my grades were and kind of reflect on them. I wanted to do this both bc I thought it could give people a better idea of the transition b/t high school and college grades-wise, and also as a record for myself.

a note/disclaimer:

if you don’t want to know what my grades were, you don’t have to read this! I’m not trying to brag and I don’t want this to be something to compare yourself to! everyone is on their own path and has their own definition of success -- a bad grade for me might be a great one for you, and vise versa.

also, this will probably get pretty long. grab a snack.

some background about grades in the US

grades are given on a scale from A to F, with A being the best and F being a fail (we skip E tho idk why). grades are based on a combo of exams, quizzes, assignments, and essays, with the specific percentage/which of these counts determined by the professor. this varies from school to school or even from class to class but generally the scale is

A: >93.3%

A-: 90-93.3%

B+: 86.7-89.9%

B: 83.4-86.6%

B-: 80-83.3%

ok I’m tired of typing things out but you get the point. this pattern continues in the 70s for C and the 60s for D. usually anything below a 60 is an F (fail) but again this can depend. some classes are graded on a curve, where the grade boundaries are moved either up or down so that the majority of students get a B-/C+, which is supposed to be the average. this prevents grade inflation and also helps you out if the class is very difficult and test averages are in the 50s or 60s (pretty common for classes like organic chemistry).

some background about my grades in high school

I feel like this info is important for context and also to give an idea of the academic level I generally operate at (okay that sounds v pretentious). anyway, it’s pretty generally expected that you can expect to see a drop in your grades from high school to college. this differs based on a ton of things, but almost everyone experiences it so it’s totally normal and to be expected! anyway, I went to a fairly competitive and well-ranked public (government funded) high school, and I grew up in a well-educated university town, so I felt I was pretty prepared for college. I took mostly AP/honors courses and ended with a 3.95 GPA (unweighted) when I graduated. basically, I was almost a straight A student with a few Bs in there (thanks to pre-calc and AP Spanish). 

I’m now at a fairly selective school, though not anything close to the Ivy League -- I think the acceptance rate for my class was 17-18%. of course, selectivity is not a great indicator of how difficult classes are, as many selective schools (particularly Ivy Leagues) have rampant grade inflation.

my majors are neuroscience and dance and I’m on a pre-med track.

anyway, let’s get down to the nitty gritty: my grades this semester.

early modern England (3 credit hours): A- 

I took this course because I placed out of introductory writing but still needed a writing-intensive course and it seemed interesting enough. honestly, it was much more difficult than I expected. I consider myself a fairly good writer, but the professor I had for this course was a tough grader for papers. I did manage to get an A on my final paper which was a victory. after easily getting all As in writing and history classes in high school, an A- is a little hard to accept. however, I worked really hard in this class and am honestly satisfied with my grade as I know most people do not do as well in this class. it was also a 2000 (sophomore level) class, so I was definitely being challenged.

intensive ballet IV (3 credit hours): B+

so, this is my lowest grade. at first, I was really disappointed by it, but it is a 4000 level course (mostly juniors and seniors) and we’re graded based partially on skill, so I have to accept it and move on and just hope to do better next semester as I’m taking ballet IV again. I know I could have worked harder in this class so I’m not going to complain about it, just learn from it and try to improve.

intro to cell & molecular biology (3 credit hours): A

this is probably what I’m proudest of. this class is known for being a true weed-out course for pre-meds and most people just hope to pass, but I got an A! it feels especially good because I know I worked hard for it and didn’t just skate by on natural intelligence. I also hadn’t taken biology since freshman year of high school so there was a steep learning curve. I didn’t just do well, I honestly learned so much and doing well in this class confirmed for me that pre-med is the right choice.

general chemistry I - lecture (3 credit hours): A-

I have such a complicated relationship with chemistry, and honestly, I’m really glad I’m done with this class. I hate to blame professors but sometimes you just get a really bad one and this was one of those cases. his lectures were extremely disorganized and he didn’t explain things clearly at all. it’s partially my fault that I didn’t get an A, though, as I definitely could have put more time and thought into studying, especially for the final. it was just so hard to stay motivated when I could barely follow lectures. I have to take gen chem II next semester but thank god I have a different professor.

general chemistry I - lab (1 credit hour): A

not much to say about this one. I’m happy to have gotten an A since it really intimidated me at first -- lab in college is way more serious than in high school. I learned how to write a proper lab report which is an important skill as a science major.

honors colloquium (1.5 credit hours): A

I loved this class soooo freaking much. everyone in the honors program has to take a first year seminar and I chose one about modernism and if it’s still relevant to the contemporary world. it was also a discussion based class which I love and I got to write my final paper on literally any topic I wanted and how it was related to modernism (mine was about the modernist search for identity in The Handmaid’s Tale, and I’m so proud of that paper, especially considering I wrote it the day it was due). anyway, not a super hard class, but still proud of that A.

urban sociology (3 credit hours): A

another class which I loved. I found it kind of easy as it was mostly memorization of concepts and theorists and I have a good memory, but I did put more effort in than I would have to an “easy” class in high school, and was rewarded by getting 100% on the final! would highly recommend sociology to literally anyone -- I’m taking another sociology class next semester and am considering a minor in it.

dance company (1 credit hour): A

this is like, not a real grade because dance company isn’t even a real class -- it’s just on my schedule so I can get credit for performing in the fall dance show. I’m pretty sure everyone who shows up to rehearsals and performances gets an A. regardless, I’m happy for the boost to my GPA.

so that’s it! overall, I ended with a 3.7925 GPA. I have to confess that it is slightly lower than I would have liked, but I’m overall happy with my efforts considering this was my first semester of college. my class load next semester is a little bit lighter, both in terms of credits and in terms of difficulty of classes, so that will hopefully make things a little more manageable. I have to have a 3.6 by the end of this year and a 3.8 by the end of sophomore year to stay in the honors program, and considering I’m almost at a 3.8 now I think it’s completely doable. 

I hope this was useful to those of you who are starting college soon. obviously this differs from school to school and especially if you’re not in the US, but in general you can expect a slight dip in your grades. it shouldn’t be anything dramatic if you can keep organized and on top of things, but there are a lot of transitions associated with starting college so don’t feel badly if things don’t go according to plan! you have time to make up for it, and med schools/law schools/grad schools know that grades your first semester of freshman year are not necessarily fully reflective of your abilities and will likely pay more attention to your grades later on.
