Whumptober day 11 prompt: Captivity
Character: Xavier Age: 24
Xavier leaned his head on the bars keeping him caged within the small room that is now his own “home,” for however long his captors wished to keep him alive. He glanced around his cell, if not for the lone mattress by the corner, it would be completely empty. He surveyed the outside, what little he can see from his position.
Guards stationed beside each cell, prisoners young, old, and ones he knows. Some were crying, others were still unconscious, the rest were quiet, like him. Throat dry and body numb, with his hope destroyed defeat was the only thing left to accept. A needless war that spanned for years, no matter how hard he fought alongside his brothers in arms, it was useless. Completely useless. Scars and wounds sustained from such a battle meant nothing, it wasn't glory, it was an ugly reminder of the many lives he had taken.
He looked down at himself, clothes tattered and worn, several wounds littered across his body, stained with a mixture of his own blood and others', from his own allies to his enemies. Death is surely a mercy he didn't deserve.
Xavier heard footsteps coming near, saw a figure at the corner of his eye, yet he didn't turn his head to look.
“Not even a greeting? How cold.” The person on the other side of the bars spoke. “Even after I went through the trouble of getting you this?”
A tray with soup, bread, and a glass of water was pushed in through the small opening at the bottom. There was still steam coming off of the soup and water.
“What's your goal?” His voice was hoarse, it was hard to speak, but that didn't matter to him anymore. Nothing did.
“That's a surprise. Wouldn't want to ruin it now.”
Xavier let out a quiet sigh. What a predictable surprise then.
“Oh, and since I'm in such a good mood. I'd even let you send your last words to your loved ones. How nice of me, right?”
“No need.” No one will look for me anyway.
“Huh… Well, enjoy your first and last night in there then. Sleep well, soldier.”
For the first time in a while, Xavier chuckled bitterly.
