Process and brainstorming the cover for Sons of Mars! I wanted to avoid more straightforward ideas for a cover and go for something artsy, while taking inspiration from the fun bombastic colors of Joshua Middleton's MM Identity covers.

Why Winn Schott Deserves To Be Appreciated
Once before like 2 months ago I made a list of reasons for why Winn should be appreciated more on another site so y'know why not post my reasons here. I may add more later idk. It of course contains spoilers for every season.
But anyways here:
-He's a dork. Honestly, that's one of the best parts about him and should make people love him more cause like dorks are the best.
-He's smart. That may not really seem important or anything, which is isn't really, but it still gives another good thing about him cause lots of people like smart people
-He's freaking adorable like have you seen that man and his smile? His smile is like the most amazing thing its just so sweet and cute and precious like how he's precious and aghhh Okay I'll stop before I rant on too much
-He's a nerd. Like, have you seen his movie references? Please tell me y'all at least appreciate that.
-He's basically another Cisco, and I don't think I've met anyone that doesn't like Cisco. So why don't y'all love Winn more?
-He's probably one of the kindest characters in Arrowverse, like he would do anything for his friends and always trys to help when he can. But his friends don't seem to appreciate that and sometimes they use him.
-He's basically never had a healthy relationship. His dad? Ended up a serial killer. His mum? Abandoned him. Foster parents? Well a lot of them gave him up and sent him to other homes probably. His old friends? I'm gonna guess some started to not like him as much and became cautious around him due to his dad. Students in school? He got bullied, probably usually by them constantly calling him Toyman Jr. His romantic relationships? Well all the past ones have failed of course (If there really was any), Siobhan tried to kill his best friend and him I'm pretty sure, Lyra used him, I mean sure Lyra had a good reason and apologised but it still wasn't great and she's done other stuff. His current friends? Well, James basically used him with the Guardian stuff at points, there was the whole "I love you Kara but you don't love me back" thing and the fact Kara literally told Lena she's never had a best friend and like WHAT ABOUT WINN MATE, Alex constantly scares and intimidates him but tbh that's fine and Alex appreciates him tbh, Braniac basically insulted his intelligence a bunch and was just mean to him. Mon-El does appreciate him I think, they just don't talk t o o often and he basically replaced Winn in the show, J'onn appreciates him too. But there's still a strong chance they've all been mean to him before. I mean that Agent dude I forgot his name it begins with like D or something, he wanted to punch him, like, Winn asked him to punch him to test his invention and he basically jumped at the chance to. Rude much?
-He's creative and talented like have you seen those cool suits he makes? And honestly, I don't think Kara even thanked him for that. At least Mon-El gave him a hug and Alex also thanked him a few times. Oh and did James thank him? Honestly, not sure, I think maybe once. But like he pressured into making the suit faster, he kept shouting at him to hurry up. Like calm down man and just appreciate what he has been doing for you.
-We all should admire his strength to deal with his past too. I mean like, the poor guy had a pretty bad childhood. His father killed a bunch of people and he had to watch him be dragged off to prison, then he was left for hours untilt he morning waiting for his mum to pick him up from prison since his mum wasn't at the house but she never came so he got sent to foster care and never saw his mum until 2 decades later. He was only 11. He was probably confused and scared and worried. And then he was sent from foster home to foster home. Probably changing schools a bunch. All alone. Getting bullied most likely and being called 'Toyman Jr'. Being the son of Toyman doesn't help the bullying when you're already a nerd and geek and probably get bullied for that. Oh and his dad also threatened to kill him and also caused him and his mother to crash so that's a great thing for him to deal with (he didn't know his dad caused it though or that his dad threatened him) and it caused him to have a concussion. He had to hide his relation to his father from everyone he knew so people didn't judge him or bully him. He even felt like he had to hide it from Kara, his best friend.
(Wellp I’ve ran out of room so uh I’ll continue the rest in another post)

the 1th season was my season
[the notorious ranting about season of Supergirl and how i don’t know why i’m still watching]
There’s this thing about Supergirl, first season, when I started to watch like a year later (I guess they were going to 2th season and all the “Who’s gonna be Superman???” stuff). Lemme explain: I don’t like superheroes, I have no respect for Superman or Batman and anyone who wears different underpants on the uniform pants (Makes no sense! Why superheroes? Why?!), my favorite character of comic books is Daredevil (Far from a usual hero) and the one who get me at DC is the Martian Manhunter (Or how we used to call here in Brazil: Ajax, o Marciano).
And there was Supergirl, the brand new series of DCU to save our geek lives.
I’ve always watched the 1th season as a story about an immigrant. Someone who lost every reference of living and part of her story while escaping, we see this kind of stories at news everyday, Syria (nowadays), here in my country there’s a lot of those who left the place they used to call Home and goes anywhere where they can find for many reasons (Most for trying to make money and escape from poverty). Immigrant story, right? That’s Kara from 1th season.
She’s not homeless, but kinda lost of her doings, her belongings, her story. Fragments of a destroyed world and tales of super awesome stuff her cousin did and still doing, must be hard to step out of shadow of someone for so long. And then there’s Alex. She’s Kara big sister, the best sister if you ask me about sisters relationships, still overshadowing since she came to Earth: Kara needs to fit, to be low profile, to understand that all what she lived once it’s over. Not going back, nope, forget it. Alex is there to reminder her every single episode that she can be more of it, more than the regular adults expectations. She can be Kara Zor-El, but most of all, she can be herself. And that's beautiful to watch.
The 1th season i’ve watched called me out for my own story, me and my family have moved of houses so many times we lost count, my big sister often tells me we never gonna settle as the other families because of it, sometimes I desperately wonder when I’ll fit to somewhere, for someone, I don’t know, maybe be normal, you know? Just like Kara from 1th season. That’s what we call somehow representation.
I’ve watched while I was very upset about how my life were going, how to fit, be the average seems so better than outstanding (and getting riled up for it),to be normal was a quiet and nice place to be. And every episode of 1th season gives us the completely opposite, empowerment, full knowlegment of our habilities, and ffs gawd Cat Grant and her weird motivational speeches! Every single episode hooked me so deeply cause i've saw something I was missing: I could be myself and be happy for it.
The Danvers's sisters relationship got me good too, I have a big sister, we don't get along so much since I was 13, I missed her so badly, but when we grow up we're trying to figuring things out. I still don't know how to get along with her, and seeing how supportative Alex and Kara are with each other goes to my soft spot. The 1th season was that mostly, their relationship, their trust about each other, their struggle to be as a family even with all the worse odds (The House of El dysfunctional family, hello?). It remind me I also can be better too. I loved Alex Danvers character at the first sign, I want to be like her someday.
And all this 1th season was like a blast to me, as a viewer and as a storyteller, as a person. That season means a lot to me, for real. Because I've grow up watching television shows that never gave too much attention to these particular topics (And match with my own living): how to be the outsider, having the most wonderful sister support ever and not get lost. And includind the space dad J'onn J'onzz? My favorite League of Justice character EVER?! That plot twist was amazing, right at the solar plexus feelings for good!
Aaaaaaand the season 2 comes.
The writers just... i really don't know what happened right there, it's just... The 2th season it's a completely different show. I can't relate anymore to anyone, I can't see anything as a nice way to keep the hopes up, I definitely can't stand the way how Kara's development was subsided by some misogynist plot ever (FFS of Rao! We are talking about the Girl of Steel, she should not bend like that!) and well here we goes Alex Danvers, my true hero, get out of the closet. Oh well... We've seen this situation before, I finally related to that too, i was pretty older when I finally got the nerve and say out loud I was gay, so been there, done that Alex! All the hugs for ya honey! I hope they didn't fuck your coming out story with cliches. It was the best I could ask for them (writers), do not fuck with this plot. Because this plot it's already doomed since ever, we don't wanna go there again. Make a change, please?
We saw how it ends, right? And I don't know where exactly the writers and producers wanna go with this mess of plot they invented. I just want to say I miss 1th season Supergirl, because that was the truly storytelling of someone trying to figuring out to be human, as we normal boring humans do everyday, even not realizing it, but we do. That's the power of some of media does to us everyday, shows like Supergirl has all the potential of bringing nice messages and bring people together not only for the fun of watching, but because maybe the story that is telling is about them, about us, everybody, somehow.
(BTW thank you Kate McGrath and Odette Annable for saving the plot, I wish Krys Marshall was there since the very beginning - that would be a A+ of dramatic background for the Worldkillers)

Headcanon Out of all the Trinity, Winn still is in the dark that Bruce is Batman and yet most of Team Supergirl (Ie, Kara, Alex, obviously James, J'onn obviously) does. It has to do mostly with the fact he never bothered to ask so it's a genuine sort of shock when he sees him without the cowl or a voice modifier for the first time. Idk I'm in love with the idea of Winn being a geek for the Trinity.
Winn geeking out hard for Clark and Diana practically worshiping the ground the walk on like their gods (pun intended), and he only starts geeking over Batman when he sees it’s Bruce and Bruce starts talking to him about the tech he made and stuff and like talking about something they could do together. Winn cried that day.
Winn probably admired Bruce and Batman separately and when he finds out they’re the same person his poor little nerd brain exploded.
Winn: I love one manWinn: I mean, two. Let’s not forget Superman, we can never forget SupermanWinn: Technically it’s three since there’s James too….. But there’s also J’onn although that’s more in a father figure kind of way, like the father I never had since mine was a homicidal maniac….Winn: Ugh, just, you know what I meant.

Ten simple ways season two could have been better
Have Kara choose her own path, separate from her cousin’s, and create a new job within CatCo. Cat basically gave her free reign and after a couple days shadowing Clark she decides to follow in his footsteps?? A blog tracking Supergirl would have even been a more interesting and unique choice….
Let James become a badass in the office, reporting and running CatCo, finding the truth and shaping the narrative, being a real-life hero. Not everyone needs to be an alien, or superhero, or vigilante to do good in the world and contribute to these shows, despite what the CW might think. His investigations could come in conflict with Supergirl’s work and cause tension between them.
Show the difficulties in Kara and James’ relationship, while still allowing them to have one. James just got out of a very serious relationship and Kara hasn’t been in one in a long time and has to put her Supergirl duties first. If they do break up, let it be partway through the season and because the timing isn’t right, or the strains on their relationship are hurting their friendship, not because Kara has suddenly decided she no longer likes him that way.
Have an episode where Winn has to go out in the field and realizes that he can do this, that he wants to do this and not just be the desk guy, and let him become a field agent. Again, let him have a calling without the vigilante story line. Let Alex become a mentor to him, showing him how hard the job is especially when working with and against aliens. bonus: Chris Wood and Jeremy Jordan training montages
Let Maggie interact with other people. Kara? good. James? great. M'gann? well that one just makes sense. Give her a backstory, not necessarily an entire episode or arc dedicated to her which could happen in a later season, but just pieces of information here and there. Flesh out her character.
Use M'gann more, even if it’s just in her role as bartender. She can interact with all of the characters and offer advice. Be an ear for Alex when she needs to vent, a friend to Maggie, a second source of adjusting to life on Earth for Mon-El as someone who came down alone and didn’t have the family or childhood that Kara got.
Keep Mon-El, but use him appropriately. Let him be a mentee for Kara, someone she can help adjust to life on Earth with powers; let it be a way to help her work through some of her lingering issues with that time in her life. Let him be a friend to Winn, who can teach him about Earth culture and discuss the benefits of being a hero, using the powers he’s been given to do something good. Drop the Prince reveal and make him actually be a former guard for the royal family. Give him the guilt of making it off of Daxam when the people he’d sworn to protect were left behind. Let him work through this guilt with Alex and J'onn, who each have their own problems with protecting the people they love and failing them.
Check-ins from Cat. Footage of Calista could have been filmed in LA and used as Facetime calls with Kara, giving her usual advice and checking in on how James is handling her company.
Choose a main adversary for the season, like Astra and Non were for season one, instead of having several story lines going on at once. Going back and forth between Cadmus, Veronica Sinclair, the Martians, and eventually whatever is happening with Mon-El makes the show feel disjointed. Choose one and then simplify or eliminate the others to fit into a one or two episode arc.
L E N A L U T H O R. Use her. Set her up to be the big bad, while starting a friendship with Kara or not, only to reveal that she’s been on Supergirl’s side all along. Or, focus more on her alien-identifying technology and registry. And for the love of God, if you’re going to tell us she and Kara are friends then please show us this!! Have her show up to hang out with the group. Show us her and Winn geeking out over tech. Show Kara taking her to the alien bar and how that might affect her views on alien’s rights to secrecy, seeing them all in their safe space being allowed to be themselves. If Katie can’t be in an episode, let Kara or someone else mention her in passing. Don’t make a character completely invisible only to drag her out when it’s convenient for your plot.
