"Over here!"
I just waved another squad of paramedics through the entrance to the sick bay. On their couch lay a heavily bleeding man. He wasn´t conscious, but if he continued to lose blood so rapidly, he would soon be gone.
"Okay, this one has to go to surgery right now." I marked him with a red bar, splashed something against the blood loss, and handed him over to the nurse who was just about to rush to me. "Another one?" Sharon looked at me. "How many are still coming in?" "That should be the last seriously injured." I started to scan him with the medical tricorder in my hand. The data immediately went to the operating room. "I don´t know how it looks on the surface." Exelor had turned from a swelling powder keg into an inferno pretty soon after our arrival, the extent of which was difficult to grasp. Extremists used the epidemic for their own purposes, the more radical of them didn´t even shy away from bombings and attacks. The current wave of casualties was just the sad climax of a series of explosions that had shaken the capital city in the last few hours.
I took a breath, then a scream caught my attention and Sharon´s outside. We ran away immediately and in the worst, what we had imagined. Spock and a Lieutenant, Carter must be his name, dragged another crewmember, Ensign Donovan, if I remembered correctly in our direction. We grabbed one of the anti-gravity litters and ran to meet them.
"He was hit directly by a grenade." As cautiously as possible, the men lifted their injured comrades to the bed. "Come on, get him to Boyd right now." I looked at Lieutenant Carter, who sprinted right away. "He's in the intensive care unit." "What happened?" Sharon was already scanning him while I moved the bed with Spock's help. The Vulcan also bled from a sharp cut on his left eyebrow.
"We were on our way back from negotiating a truce when a bomb exploded next to our transport shuttle. Two members of the security guard were killed instantly, Donovan was still trying to bring another one to safety, the grenade exploded right next to them. "
I stared from Spock to Donovan. His arm had been torn off, his face was burned, and the remains of his uniform had fused with his ribcage. That didn´t look good, no matter which miracle drugs Dr. Boyd had in his box. We entered the sick bay when Boyd rushed towards us.
"Great God!" He immediately joined us and Spock told him what he had already told us. "Go on, in the OP with him." "What can I tell the captain?" Spock stopped at the threshold of the surgery area. "That he should move his ass here, if he even was only near this explosion. Zimmer, mend Spock, then I need you here! "
"Yes Doctor." I let go of the couch, then grabbed the Vulcan's arm and pulled him away from the door to one of the treatment rooms.
"We better listen to him, his mood has dropped rapidly in the last few hours. Over here." I led him to a couch and to my surprise he sat down on the thin upholstery without a big lecture. Even he looked finished. The injury to his head luckily looked worse than it was. The scan with the tricorder also told me he had not suffered any serious injuries.
"Okay, looks good." I put the tricorder aside and grabbed the wound kit. "I suspect that will hurt like hell tomorrow." "Pain is only a product of our mind." "What would your mind say if I pressed a cotton swab into your wound?" I smiled lightly at him, then carefully started to treat his wound. "Spock, what the hell happened down there? When we left the planet yesterday, everything was under control. In a few hours, the Tyson arrives here, then the supply problem would be solved. "
"To be honest, I don´t know." He glanced at me. "The captain's conversation with the leader of the extremists quickly got out of hand, and we had to flee from there. A few hundred meters later, the shuttle fell into a blast trap, the second grenade caught us on the street. The situation escalates, Governor Sforza has ordered a military intervention for the next hour. "
I stared at him. "Where is Chris?" "Captain Pike and Commander Dumar are still on the planet." I almost let fell the regulator out of my hand, instead I just closed my eyes. "If we fail to stop the Governor."
"This blow could kill hundreds of civilians." And Chris. "You say my head is alright?" "Well." Spock slid off the couch. "Hey, what's that supposed to be?" I stood in his way, ridiculous, I knew he could knock me out with a clue. "I need to help the captain. These people are counting on us. " "The Tyson will be here in three hours." I swallowed slightly. "Bring him back." "I'll do my best."
Then he let me down and although I still had a standing order, I allowed myself to take a deep breath. I leaned in, closing my eyes and trying to suppress anyone just trying to blow up my friends, maybe even kill them. The words of Number One came to my mind. "We've come this far, but as soon as we face seemingly unsolvable problems, we fall back into old patterns and forget everything that is right and decent." I hoped she was wrong. I tore my bloody gloves off my hands, followed by a smeared surgical shirt, then hurried to the operating room where Dr. Boyd was waiting for me. My day would not be over yet. ***** "I stop." Dr. Boyd's words boomed in my ears as if he had just announced the Last Judgment. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, then looked into the faces of the people standing by me. Everyone was in shock, grief and sadness filled the atmosphere. A silent tear rolled down Sharon´s cheek, I slowly withdrew my hands and put my instruments aside.
"Time of death." Boyd just tore off his gloves. "22.40Uhr. Stardate." He sighed loudly. "I'll add later."
Then he left the operation room, I looked behind him for a moment, then again into the face of Lieutenant Donovan, now my tears came too, I tried somehow to fight them down. At least he had not had any pain at last.
One of the surgery nurses, an Andorian, her name must be Chora, started to cleanse his face. I knew that I was no longer needed, so I took off my gloves and coat and left the operation room. I was barely through the door, as I found Boyd. Lost he sat on a couch.
"Phillip." I went to him. "Can I do something for you?" He looked at me, a sad smile on his lips. "No, but thanks for the offer." "Not even a martini?" I started walking, sat next to him and had to grin a little over his gaze. "The Captain told me." "Maybe when all this mess here is finally over."
I hesitated for a moment, then laid my hand on his, which he had dropped on his knees. He closed his fingers around mine, then we just sat there. He stared at the wall in front of him, I watched my tears painting dark stains on my pants. We sat there for maybe five minutes, then a renewed onslaught of injured people demanded our attention. Again critical patients who couldn´t longer be cared for in the city hospital. So Dr. Boyd put on a fresh coat, I slipped into a clean surgical shirt and started taking in patients again, instructing, treating and hoping that they would survive the stay here.
 ******
Tragically, in these hectic hours, I learned more as some others in their entire time on the academy. When I slipped back into my blue uniform jacket sometime in the early morning hours, I felt drained, exhausted and was not even sure which day was actually.
"Hey." One of the paramedics who replaced me came to me. "Do you know if the patients in treatment room C are already discharged?" "Um." I stroked my forehead. "Which were these?" "Out of the ambulance in the city." She handed me a PADD. "The notes are not very clear." "You can be happy if there's anything clear today." I tried to concentrate on the entries. "I'm bringing order to chaos." She smiled at me. "Yepp, but they're discharged. Back with them. "
"You see, it's getting neater." She just wanted to turn around, but there seemed to be something else. "Dr. Boyd wanted to see you. " "He's still here?" I tried to open my eyes. "Like you." "Well true." After the third, unsuccessful attempt to close my jacket, I let it remain and went on to seek Dr. Boyd and if necessary send him to bed. He sat behind his desk and looked up wearily as I entered. "You wanted to talk to me?" He nodded, offered me a chair and I was happy to fall into it. I couldn´t prevent the sighing slipping from me. "Who are you saying that?" Boyd turned to me. "That was good today." "I just did my job." Still good to hear it. "Do you know something new?"
On the sidelines, we had heard that the Tyson had arrived and had started immediately after landing on the planet with the supply of the population.
"Apparently, the military strike was called off, many who had sided with the extremists found back to clear mind, we know more tomorrow or today." He shook his head. "How can something like this happen?" "I have experienced such situations many times, maybe too often, and I have asked myself the same question over and over again." He fastest with his tounge. "At some point I will surely get an answer. Did you see the captain? " "No." I had a thought he seemed to share. "One day I'll kill him." Boyd jumped out of his chair with surprising vigor, and I tried to do the same. "Maybe I'll catch him before he can do it himself."
"Sir, could you possibly try not to do that?" I smiled at him as he pulled a suitcase off the shelf. "Please?"
Now a smile on his face, he turned to me. "Computer, where is Captain Pike." The computer took a few seconds and I was afraid that it wouldn´t have a particularly good answer.
"Captain Christopher Pike is in his quarters."
"Miserable bastard." Boyd slammed the suitcase, well case on a couch, then he handed me a tricorder. "I don´t have any left nerves for that today, so you'll look after him." "Me?" He couldn´t possibly be serious. "Sir, I'm not a doctor." "You're qualified enough to find out if he's just a little dented or really injured, if that's the case, you'll drag him here and if you have to stun him for it!"
"Yeah, okay, if you say that." I grabbed the tricorder, put it in my suitcase and threw my shoulder strap over it. "Maybe you should rest a bit, Sir."
Then I hurried to leave the infirmary and made my way to Pike's quarters.
