@huntalie. . . liked for a starter.
life had stopped making sense to laura lee the moment their plane plummeted from the sky. glimpses, maybe, here and there, shapes in her periphery, but by the second plane raining fire and brimstone upon them, she'd only kept on falling. head over heels far after she'd already hit the water. o thou of little faith. wherefore didst thou doubt ? maybe it was the moment you let us fucking sink. and yet, there is no other word for it but faith, this hellfire reflection in her eye. it devours the cabin, their home, like a lion, leaving nothing but skin and bone to pick through, blacker than black. at least it's warm. it'll be warmer in hell, something certain in her whispers, a root taking hold. a certainty of the un - seen, made seen before their very eyes. faith. the only thing that's made sense to her since the moment their plane plummeted from the sky ; this is judgment. righteous, holy fire for the blasphemers.
but the innocent were always damned with the guilty. firstborns swallowed in the plague. travis didn't deserve to lose his only home now that his brother was dead. lottie didn't deserve it either, akilah, gen, melissa, natalie. they were already suffering, half frozen, half starved, half dead. what more could it want from them, what more could it take ? what more could they give ? a home. their only home, for their only meal. maybe it was a fair trade after all. but no. no, it's only fair the taste of javi is forever turned to ash in their mouths, but not for all of them. travis, natalie— natalie tried. she was going to feed them all, despite lottie's offering, despite their heresy against it, she was going to feed them. heed the altar call and lie down upon it, and now look at her. ram in the thicket made archangel, forged in fire to light their path forward, chosen by the cards, the wilderness, lottie. who was laura lee to question it ?
so she doesn't. she has faith in lottie, and lottie put her faith in natalie. and god saw the light, that it was good : and god divided the light from the darkness. laura lee knows this, if nothing else : natalie is good. and because she's good, she will doubt herself, just as lottie did, and this is why they're good, why they're chosen. their home is in each other. “   you're not alone in this,   ” she whispers, fierce, forcing the glow in her gaze to shine on natalie's. what a way to start a reign. but light will always shine brighter in the dark. “   have faith in lottie. in yourself. we've made it this far.   ” what more could they lose ? where could they go now but up, after they'd already walked through the gates of hell ? doesn't that depend on which way you're going : out, or further in ? “   you got us this far.   ” not only your skill, but your kindness, “   you've been a faithful servant, natalie. now it's our turn. we just have to give it. . . more of the same.   ” here, cold hands find another's, slow, wary as an animal, but holding tight. “   more faith in it. trust, in each other.   ”

KORACH
bs'd
Shalom.
The thought this week of my book 'Healing Anger' is: "When you feel yourself starting to become angry at your spouse, thinking about these two things will help: 1. We all have shortcomings and deficiencies. Acknowledge the truth that you are also less than perfect. 2. Judge the person as a whole. Diminish the negative and accentuate the positive. Focus your thoughts on the positive attributes of your spouse and his or her good deeds. This will prevent anger from making an appearance."

KORACH-The Power of a Woman
In this week's parsha, Korach (tribe of Levi), Datan, Aviram, On ben Pelet (all from the tribe of Reuven) together with 250 leaders of the Jewish people revolted against Moshe and Aharons’ leadership. They complained, "It's too much for yourself! All the Jewish people are holy and G-d is among them. Why do you exalt yourselves over the congregation of G-d?"[0] .When Moshe responded to the demands of the rebels, everyone is referred to except On. No further mention is made of him.
Hashem confirmed Moshe and Aharon’s leadership when the earth swallowed up Korach, Datan and Aviram, and their entire families and a heavenly fire consumed the 250 men. The obvious question here is, what happened to On ben Pelet? He and Korach started out in the same 'team', but they met very different ends. Korach suffered an ignominious death, while On escaped.
The Gemara[1] explains that On  ben Pelet was saved by his wife. She saw that he was getting all fired up about Korach’s rebellion. She told him, ‘What does it matter to you whether Moshe remains your master or Korach becomes your master? Either way, you remain a disciple'. On replied, ‘But what can I do? I have already sworn allegiance to Korach'. He could not remove himself from the group. She said, ‘I know that the whole community [including the rebels] is holy. Sit here and I will save you'. His wife gave him wine to drink, intoxicated him until he fell asleep. She then went outside the tent and  when Korach's men came to summon On, she did not allow them to come in and wake her husband. They ultimately left without him. Because of her On ben Pelet was saved.
On the other hand, the Gemara [2] tells us that Korach's wife fanned the flames of revolt and encouraged him to start his rebellion to dethrone Moshe. It was her teasing which angered him against Moshe. She told him, "See what Moshe has done. He has become king, his brother is the High Priest. If Terumah is brought, Moshe decrees let it be for the Priest, if tithes are brought to the Levites, one tenth goes to the priests. Moreover, he had your hair cut off and made a mockery of you". The Gemara concludes that this is a classic example of a wise woman, exemplified by On's wife and the foolish one, exemplified by Korach's wife. As King Shlomo said, "The wise woman builds her house. But the foolish one tears it down with her own hands" [3]. On was saved, whereas Korach and all the other rebels were killed. On's wife built her house with her wisdom. Korach's wife destroyed hers with her stupidity. Sometimes it is easy to underestimate the power of women. On the whole, men have a need to express their power to be recognized and respected by others. Women, on the other hand, with their common sense and wisdom, are brains behind many great men. If Korach's wife had used her power wisely as On's wife, he would not have rebelled against Moshe. The real power player was not Korach but his wife. In a similar vein the Midrash Rabbah [4] relates a story about a righteous couple. They did not have the merit to parent children and decided that they could not serve Hashem unless they both had children. They divorced and remarried, unfortunately, evil spouses. The righteous man soon turned evil, but the righteous woman turned her new evil husband into a tzaddik. The Midrash concludes: "everything depends on the woman". She is the foundation of the home. She sets the tone and has an enormous influence on all members of the family. The husband, children and anyone else who enter the home are caught by the atmosphere created by the woman. Men are more involved in the external world around them and bring home ideas and wisdom from outside sources. Women are in charge of the house and control what is expected and tolerated within it. Women were given a gift from G-d to generate wisdom without the need to venture beyond their families. One of the greatest Jewish women of all time, Deborah, was a prophet and a judge, but she still referred to herself as a "mother" (Shoftim 5:7). Hashem blessed Jewish women with special insight, they have the power to direct, indirectly, their husbands and their families. This power can be used to build and maintain the Jewish people like On's wife, or to destroy or cripple them, like Korach's wife.The Torah [5] states that it is not good for man to be alone, therefore, Hashem made a helpmate to be "against", "opposite" him. The Gemara [6] explains that if a man is worthy, his wife will help him to fulfill his potential. However, if a man is unworthy, his wife will fight against him. This can be understood that if the husband is about to undertake a worthy cause his wife shall boost and encourage him to fulfill his undertaking. However, if she sees he is making a mistake and is about to do something unworthy, she must stand up against him and discourage him. She can help by helping and sometimes she can help by standing up and opposing, putting the husband, very respectfully, in his right place. What a difference a wife can make! Once in a while we need to hear words from our wives that set us straight and put us in our place. On the other hand, if a person does not merit a good wife, she and her urging can be his undoing and the cause of his destruction and the home's. We know that G-d gave extra insight to women[7]. On's wife had common sense. She respectfully showed her husband that he had nothing to gain and everything to lose by joining the rebellion and devised a clever way to save her husband. Korach's wife was foolish. She filled her husband's mind with jealousy. Her foolishness destroyed her own life together with the lives of her husband and many others. Just as the Jews in Egypt went out in the merit of the righteous women of that generation [8], may we soon be taken out of our exile and restore the greatness of Israel in the merit of the righteous women of our times. _____________________________________ [0] Bemidbar 16:3 [1] Sanhedrin 109b [2] Sanhedrin 110a [3] Mishle 14:1 [4] Bereshit 17:12 [5] Bereshit 2:18 [6] Yevamot 63a [7] Niddah 45b [8] Sotah 11b
