My HL (Hodgkin’s Lymphoma) Journey

“You have cancer”. I heard these words on a sunny July afternoon in 2020. July 23rd to be exact. I had a chest biopsy that was done that Tuesday, the 21st and anxiously waited for the results. I was not prepared to hear those words ever in my entire life nor is there anything that can prepare you for it. I was 6 months pregnant with my daughter, Madison, at the time so you can imagine the emotions I was feeling were heightened because of the pregnancy. Let me start at the beginning. Welcome to my cancer story.

My cancer journey started during my pregnancy with my aforementioned daughter. I found out I was pregnant with our first child in February 2020. I’ll make it clear that I had a wonderful pregnancy (cancer stuff put aside) and my daughter is happy, healthy, and living her best life. We were wonderfully blessed to be on this journey of pregnancy and enjoying every part of it. Although, I would not recommend being pregnant during a pandemic. Now being in 2021, there’s more that we know about COVID-19 but the beginning was rough. During the first trimester of pregnancy, my midwife brought up information about genetic testing that is available to pregnant moms for their babies that can be done through a simple blood test. It’s a carrier screening test that’s optional but does check to see if I am a carrier for 3 genetic abnormalities (Down Syndrome, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13). I almost didn’t do this blood test because whether or not I was a carrier for the 3 different abnormalities, it wouldn’t change the outcome of the pregnancy. If I ended up being a carrier, my husband, Rob, would also have to be carrier in order for it to be most likely passed down to our baby. I decided to do it because it was covered by my insurance and it was a quick visit to my clinic to get my blood drawn. No big deal.

I got the test done in April and then didn’t hear anything right away. I didn’t think much of it but I realized that I never got my results back on the test so I called my clinic to get my future appointments set up and then spoke directly with my midwife. She asked me if I heard anything from the lab about my results and I told her that I hadn’t. She ended up calling them and then called me right back. She said that my results came back as “inconclusive” as the lab could not determine if I was a carrier for any genetic abnormality because a lot of my DNA strands are incomplete with parts missing. My midwife said that out of her 30+ years of doing this job, she has never heard of this result before. Great. I was concerned about what this meant for the baby and concerned since my midwife didn’t know how to handle this. My care was transferred over to a Maternal & Fetal Medicine (M&FM) doctor who I saw for the rest of my pregnancy as I was now considered to be high risk. During this same week (the week of May 18th), I had a visit over the phone with a genetic counselor who told me that the result of the genetic test could be the cause of something as simple as being anemic (not getting enough iron) or something more serious like a tumor (whether benign or malignant). I was told that the least likely of it to be would be a tumor (I can laugh about this now but the irony). I also had a breast ultrasound at the hospital to make sure there were no lumps that could be causing this (there weren’t – I was clear).

At this point, I was feeling stressed but overall still feeling good and excited about my pregnancy despite this hiccup (or what I thought was just a hiccup). I had a few visits with the M&FM doctor and had more ultrasounds than a “normal” pregnancy so that they can check to make sure that Baby E was growing as she should and didn’t show any outward signs of a genetic disability. I had a lot of blood work done but it all came back clear and showing no signs of anything going wrong in my body. For a while, I felt like a test subject and with every test that was ordered and prick in my arm I was getting annoyed that I wasn’t getting to enjoy a “normal” pregnancy with all the visits that I had. I say “normal” because every pregnancy is different for every woman. When my doctor told me that the last thing she wanted to order for me was chest CT and an MRI to confirm there was not a tumor in my body, she promised she would let me enjoy my pregnancy and not order any more tests. I almost almost declined the MRI and CT because I felt like I didn’t want to go through that and be exposed to possible radiation and on top of that, I felt fine. God was really watching out for me and leading me in the direction to get the diagnostic tests done.

On July 8th, I had the MRI and CT done. I was with Rob when I got the call from my doctor that afternoon to go over the results. The MRI was unclear because of the baby moving but from what they could see, there was nothing that came up. However, the CT scan showed a mass in my chest that was the size of a distorted hockey puck; measuring at 7 ½ cm by 7cm by 2 cm and was located between my heart and my lung. I was watching Rob tear up and all I could say to him as soon as I hung up with my doctor was. “I’m going to be okay” over and over again. I think I was in complete shock over hearing that there is a tumor in my chest that could be cancer. We had my family over that night and I broke down several times throughout the night. I remember saying that I want to watch my child grow up (since we didn’t know the sex of the baby at the time) and I was scared that I wouldn’t have that chance. I went to bed that night thinking that I was going to die during the night because of the tumor. To be very clear, I wasn’t having suicidal thoughts or anything but when I was told that I have a tumor in my chest, the first thought that went through my mind was that I wouldn’t live to see the next day. This sounds dramatic as I’m writing this but it's the truth. In reality, I probably have had this tumor for a year, two years, or even longer. No one truly knows.

Between finding out about the tumor and getting the chest biopsy done was about 2 weeks. I can tell you that it was the slowest 2 weeks of my life. During this time, Rob and I were busy packing and getting ready to move into our house. So on top of being in the middle of a pandemic, being pregnant, having a tumor in my chest (without knowing if it was cancer), we were moving too. These two weeks were filled with prayers and spending time with friends and family. I had many breakdowns but Rob helped by feeding me all my favorite foods (I was pregnant after all). We moved into our house on July 16th. It was a wonderful day and we are thankful for the friends and family that helped us move into our new space. It was an exhausting time but so worth it. As mentioned at the beginning of this, I had my chest biopsy on Tuesday, July 21st. They couldn’t put me under because I was pregnant but my midwife prescribed me something that would be safe to take while pregnant but will help calm me during the procedure. It was a surreal feeling laying on the procedure table seeing a needle sticking out my chest and moving with every breath I took. Without that medication, I would have probably freaked out since I knew that the needle was close to my heart and lung.

2 days later is when I got the call from my doctor telling me the life changing news: I have cancer. God works as wonderfully as he does because that day my mom and grandma happened to come over for lunch, a rare occurrence during the work week so they were there when I got the call. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (HL), which happens to be a very treatable cancer. My doctor told me that she has already been in contact with the oncology team at the hospital to have someone get a hold of me to get an appointment set-up right away. I called all of our family who came over to process the news with me. There were many tears shed between all of us and I couldn’t eat or drink anything because I was so stressed and worried about what this means for my future and Madison’s future. That night, I got a call from Dr. Anderson who became my oncologist during this journey. We met with him the following day at the hospital to go over my CT and MRI scan images and to go over treatment options. He discussed that the general treatment plan for HL was chemotherapy and possible radiation. He also discussed the staging (HL is staged from stage I to stage IV) but because I was pregnant, they were limited in what tests they could order to determine a true stage until after I give birth. For example, they would normally perform a PET scan to confirm where the cancer is in my body but weren’t able to because it’s not safe for the baby. I was originally stage I but borderline stage II because of the size of my cancer and they knew that because of the chest CT. One thing he suggested was to get a bone marrow biopsy done to confirm that the cancer hasn’t spread to my bone marrow (which is a common place for HL to be).

I can tell you now that doing the bone marrow biopsy rivals the pain of childbirth. I was 6 months pregnant when I had the bone marrow biopsy done and it is a very painful procedure. I had the biopsy done on August 5th and what they do is take two samples from my pelvic bone, a liquid sample and a solid sample. The thing is, they could only numb the area where the needle was inserted into my body but there was no way to numb my actual pelvic bone so that is where I felt the pain and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced. I’ll be honest, I cried during it but I luckily had a wonderful nurse who held my hand and talked me through the pain the entire time. Fortunately, the results came back confirming that there was no cancer to be found in my bone marrow. I was still considered to be stage I at this point in my cancer journey but that changed once I gave birth. I’ll get into that a little later.

This was the day after. I was very sore. Peep at the zubaz.

Now that the bone marrow biopsy was done, we met again with Dr. Anderson to go over options. I had the choice of starting chemotherapy while still pregnant (it’s generally safe since I was in my third trimester) or wait until I give birth to start. It was a very heavy decision to make. On one hand if I were to start chemotherapy while still pregnant, there are possible negative side effects for the baby: low birth weight, preterm labor (which ended up happening anyway), mental issues, and fertility issues. On the other hand, if I wait to receive chemotherapy until after the birth, am I putting my health at risk and possibly getting worse with the cancer? Rob and I went back and forth, talked to our families about it, and prayed – a lot.

After a lot of thinking, I decided to wait until after the birth to start chemotherapy. I was feeling good overall and not feeling the “normal” symptoms of HL. I was considered asymptomatic (not showing any symptoms) but here are the common symptoms for HL:

· Persistent fatigue

· Night sweats

· Fever

· Unexplained weight loss

· Severe itching

· Painless swelling of lymph nodes in neck, armpits, or groin

I came to the conclusion that whatever decision I made was the right decision. I knew that I wanted to ride out the rest of my pregnancy without causing any possible disruption to my daughter and her growth. In lieu of receiving treatment during pregnancy, I had to go in for weekly blood work to make sure that everything was still coming back normal (for a pregnancy). My oncologist did order a blood test that checked inflammation in my body. This is called an erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and the number was already elevated because of pregnancy but also if it was higher than what my oncologist wanted, it would help determine that there might be something bad happening in my body. The number slowly increased as the weeks went on and as I got more and more pregnant. Fortunately, the number was still low enough to satisfy my oncology team. I also had an echocardiogram on July 27th and lung function test on August 3rd to get a baseline on where my heart and lungs were. Of course being pregnant means that my lung function test came back with skewed results than what would be normal. They get these baselines since the drugs that I will be receiving during chemotherapy can affect the heart and lungs negatively so they want to keep a close eye on it. They both came back fine, my heart is strong and my lungs were functioning as well as they could with the rest of my organs pressed into them (yay pregnancy).

I had my last ultrasound for my daughter when I was 33 weeks pregnant and the last time that I would see the M&FM doctor as I would be seen every week until I gave birth with my midwife. Little did I know, I would be walking into the hospital on Sunday evening, September 13th because my water broke (I’ll never forget Rob’s face when they confirmed that my water broke – it was priceless!) A little worried but ready for anything, I was ready to give birth despite her being 6 weeks early. Since I was only 1cm dilated, the plan was to induce me the next morning and start the process of giving birth. Apparently my daughter Madison had a different plan because I spent the night dealing with veeerrry painful contractions before I got the epidural. Seriously, a game changer. When the doctors came in to check how I was doing with the epidural, they were surprised to find that I was 9cm dilated and told me that I was about to start pushing. Since I was without sleep and very tired and given the epidural, I was ready to do the damn thing. After an hour of pushing, Madison was born on September 14th at 6:51am! She spent 13 days in the NICU but was never needing any respiratory support at only being at 34 weeks but was healthy and happy.

Once Madison was home from the hospital, it was time for me to get started with my official cancer journey. On September 29th, I had a PET scan done and this helped to confirm everything we knew but also showed something unexpected; there was another lymph node that lit up in my chest too. This put me officially in stage II HL. The treatment plan remained the same though; I were to receive a chemotherapy combination of drugs abbreviated ABVD (every letter represents a different chemo drug). This part is hard to write because even discussing these drugs makes me nauseous and queasy (something that I don’t think will go away anytime soon). The “A” in the “chemo cocktail” side effect is hair loss. Something that I have prepared myself for, or as much as I could, but nothing can prepare you for when it actually starts happening. I knew that the hair loss was temporary and I would rather be bald for a short time than have cancer for the rest of my life. We got together with some friends at the end of September interspersed so they can meet Madison and also to spend some time together before Rob and I made the decision to lock down our house from visitors. We also made the decision to limit our circle of people that we will see in the coming months. We did this because we knew that my health was going to decline because of chemo and also with the threat of COVID, my immune system couldn’t take the risk of getting sick. It was a very difficult decision since we thrive on social situations and we love hanging out with our friends and family but it was vital that we don’t see many people. This really affected my mental health as I rely on our friends to get me through hard times and this was hands down one of the hardest times that I will probably go through.

Over the course of the next 6 months, I will experience the ups and downs (a lot more downs than ups) of receiving chemotherapy and the effect that this has on my body. I would never wish chemotherapy and the pain associated with it on anybody. I know that this was extremely tough on my family and friends to see me in such a state. Chemotherapy and the days after it are a nightmare that you can’t wake up from. It was my reality waking up every day and knowing that I still have cancer and have the possibility of getting really sick from it or something worse (don’t worry, I never got into a dark head space but I also needed to make sure I was realistic in all the possibilities). My only other experience with cancer is not a positive one. My sister in law, Beth, passed away from stage IV malignant melanoma on March 26th, 2017. From the time she was diagnosed to the time she passed away, it was about 6 months so you can imagine what was going through my mind when I was diagnosed with this horrible disease.

On Monday October 5th, I underwent outpatient surgery to get an implantable port that was put in my chest. This port is used for chemotherapy and is an alternative to having the nurses inserting a needle in my vein each chemo session because over time, the chemotherapy drugs can negatively affect strong veins. The port uses a special needle during chemotherapy to inject the drugs and connected to the port is a tube (I’m sure there’s a medical term but I’m not medically trained) that ran up to a main vein near my neck that was connected directly to my heart so that the drugs were dispersed quickly through my body. It was never painful during the time that I had it and I looked forward to the day when I would be able to get my port out because that means that I was cancer free and no longer receiving chemotherapy.

On Thursday, October 8th, I had my first chemotherapy session. Luckily the hospital allowed one visitor to come with patients so Rob was fortunately able to come with me. My mom was staying with us for a few weeks to help with the transition of chemotherapy and making sure that someone was able to take care of Madison in case that I was not able to (thinking of this breaks my heart because I never wanted to be a position where I couldn’t take care of my own child). Rob and I showed up to the hospital early in the morning at about 8am and didn’t leave until a little after 3pm. It’s safe to say that it was a very long, draining, exhausting day. Not all chemotherapy sessions were this long but because it was my first one, there’s more that happens than normal. Walking into the oncology suite for the first time to get chemotherapy was nerve-wracking because I didn’t know what to expect. I also felt a lot of eyes on me from the other people also waiting to get chemotherapy and I knew they were looking at me because of my age. Most of them were a lot older. I did come across someone one time who was just a few years older than me (they usually ask date of birth when checking in so that’s how I knew) and I could tell it was his first time because he looked as nervous as I did during my first visit.

At the hospital, they have both private rooms and a public space too. We were lucky enough to get a private room and it made things a little easier and helped to ease my anxiety knowing that if anything negative were to happen, I wouldn’t be in a public area where other people could witness it. The first nurse that I had was Jen and she was incredible. I’ll say that every nurse that I had were awesome. Anyways, they stared out each visit by taking blood work through my port. They want to make sure that I met the threshold with my blood work to be able to receive chemo because if I am below that threshold for what they are comfortable with, I would be deemed too sick to receive chemo and it would have to be delayed. Luckily I never got to that point but I came close a couple of times. They mainly check my hemoglobin and my white blood cell count but there’s a few other numbers they check as well. I then had a visit with my oncologist who walked me through what each drug’s side effects are. It also was an opportunity to ask questions. The main side effects entailed nausea, lack of appetite, headaches, fatigue, numbness in hands and feet, and night sweats. To help curb the nausea, there were “pre-meds” that were given to me before I received the chemo drugs that mainly were anti-nausea drugs.

Once my oncologist left, it was just me, Rob, and Jen. Jen started to give me one of the pre-med drugs called Emend. It’s an anti-nausea drug that was given to me through my port. Jen just started the drip from the IV bag when I started to feel my chest tighten and my face got flushed. I asked Jen if it was normal to feel this way and she stopped what she was doing immediately and told me that it’s not normal. She stopped the drip right away, pressed a button in the room, and then all of a sudden, it went from the 3 of us to about 7-8 people in the tiny room. There were nurses, helpers, and a pharmacist that came in the room. Someone was taking my vitals (heart rate, oxygen level, and temperature), while the nurses there checking my legs for swelling. As soon as she stopped the drip, the tightening in my chest went away and I was able to breathe normally. My vitals came back fine but my heart rate was through the roof because having that many people in the room spiked my anxiety and then there were people that were sticking their heads out of their rooms to see what was going on. It was slightly embarrassing because I felt fine and I don’t like being fussed over. The pharmacist explained that they will discontinue giving me the Emend but he also explained that this is not a common thing that occurs for most people so I most likely had an allergic reaction to the drug. Once everyone left my room, Jen gave me a huge dose of Benadryl to counteract the Emend so I ended up falling asleep for most of the session and I was in and out of consciousness so I don’t really remember much from my first session. I woke up periodically when Jen came in the room with the chemo drugs. I think Rob left the room for a little bit to get some food from the café and to stretch his legs.

The drug that always came first was the Adriamycin (A) which had to be administered by the nurse sitting next to me and slowly injecting it in a timely manner. The rest of the drugs, Bleomycin (B), Vinblastine (V), and Doxorubicin (D), were given via IV bags that were slowly administered over a period of time. When 3pm came around, I finished up my last drug and was able to leave. I went home and slept for a long time.

I received chemo every other week. I was considered to be toxic for the first 72 hours after, which means my bodily fluids should not be handled by anyone but me. Rob and I deemed our downstairs bathroom as the “chemo bathroom” so that’s what I used every time. After going to the bathroom, I have to put the toilet seat down and flush twice. If I vomited, I would need to be the one to clean it up but if someone were to help, they would need to wear a mask and gloves. Fortunately I never vomited during my cancer journey (mind over matter). For the rest of my chemo sessions, they were mostly uneventful. There was a point where the hospital changed their visitor policy and I was not able to bring Rob to the appointments so I had to go alone. This really took an effect on my mental health and negatively affected my health knowing that I would have to endure the sessions alone. I felt like my health declined during that time period so for a few months, I was going alone and sitting in the public area. I usually would bring our Nintendo Switch, read, or I would sit and watch Tik Toks. I would have a song in my head on how I was feeling that day so I would usually send the song to my family to let them know where my head space was at that day.

For those that are wondering, a chemo cycle is about a month long (28 days). In each cycle, there are 2 sessions. The plan was to do 2 cycles and then have a repeat PET scan done (which was the end of November) and then most likely 4 more cycles of chemo after that and then another PET scan (which was in March). As I mentioned earlier, one of the side effects from one of the chemo drugs is hair loss. My oncologist prepared me that I most likely will lose my hair. Easier said than done. I didn’t see any hair loss during my first cycle but I knew that it was only a matter of time. When I started my second cycle of chemo, that’s when it happened. It was the week of Halloween and I believe it was a Tuesday when I took a shower during the day. As mentioned before, my mom was living with us to take care of Madison and I am thankful that she was there. This is a vulnerable topic to discuss for me because even though I know the hair loss is temporary, our hair makes us part of who we are as people and you can’t convince me otherwise. When I started washing my hair, I pulled out a huge portion. I kept pulling out more and more hair and I broke down crying in the shower. I eventually made it out and showed my mom what happened. This was one of the toughest days of my journey. I ended up sleeping for about 6 hours after that because I was emotionally and mentally drained. That night, Rob bought me my favorite food from a hibachi place close by our house and that helped my spirits a little bit.

The rest of the week I avoided washing my hair when I took my showers because I wasn’t ready to go through that trauma again because despite pulling out a few handfuls, I still had plenty of hair on my head. I said at the beginning of the journey that I wasn’t planning on shaving my head and that I would just keep what hair I could but I changed my decision on that. On Halloween was when I became bald. I was prepared this time when I went to take a shower as I brought in a few shower beers and had loud music playing. I walked out of the bathroom and showed Rob, who was watching Madison, the hair that I pulled out and with tears in my eyes, I asked him if he could shave my head. I can tell you that afterwards, I didn’t feel sad, I felt liberated more than anything because this was my decision and not something that the cancer could take away from me. I was in pretty good spirits and spent the night playing board games with my brother and sister in law. We dressed Madison up as a Chipotle burrito even though she didn’t like that (she wasn’t in it long). I now am in possession of a few wigs and some hair wraps and hats. My family has never seen me without a hat or a wig on because being bald is the only physical trait that links me to cancer. I want them to always remember me with hair because this is already tough on them that I don’t want them to have that memory of me.

One thing that I didn’t mention earlier but with the Bleomycin (B), this was a drug that caused my loss of appetite, fatigue, and overall nausea after each chemo session. This drug is known to cause negative effects on the lungs so I was carefully monitored by getting lung function tests done. The last one that I did was at the end of my first cycle where they saw a slight drop in my lung function so they stopped giving me this drug so I was only getting AVD for the rest of my cycles. My oncologist explained that it’s better to have some of this drug in my regimen than not getting it at all and it’s about 50% of the time that it’s dropped at some point during the chemo journey. I overall felt better and got my appetite and some of my energy back. I started working out again and felt like I could get through the day without feeling like I needed a nap. I probably would have napped more if I didn’t have Madison at home but I wanted to give as much attention to her as possible. I’ve said this many times to my family, friends, and coworkers, but Madison will always be my dose of serotonin when I’m having a bad day.

After going through 2 successful chemo sessions, it was time to get another PET scan done. This happened on November 30th. I got the results of the scan 2 days later with Dr. Anderson. He explained that the chemo drugs are doing their job and he saw a huge improvement in the cancer that was found in my body. The mass in my chest also decreased in size. He showed me the scans and I was blown away with the difference. Seeing the cancer light up in my body gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes but also seeing the improvement gave me so much hope. The game plan after this visit was to go through 4 more cycles (about 4 months) of chemo and then do another PET scan.

On December 30th, I was starting my 4th cycle and I wasn’t scheduled for a visit with my oncology team that day. I had my routine bloodwork done and then I was sitting in a private room waiting for my pre-meds when my nurse for the day came in. She told me that it was taking longer to get the blood work back because my white blood cell count was so low that they had to individually count my white blood cells. Individually. Count. Meaning, I was almost at the threshold of being too sick to get chemo and inevitably delaying treatment. The nurse warned to be extra careful and to avoid leaving the house since I could not risk getting sick now. I only left the house to go to chemo at this point so I wasn’t seeing many people anyways. I remember calling my mom and telling her the news and breaking down crying because I was scared. It’s hard for me to admit that and I felt scared during this process more than I let on to my family and friends because I hate feeling vulnerable. I was able to still get treatment that day but I also didn’t feel very good during that visit. This happened one other time, which happened to be my last chemo session that I had.

One scary event that happened was when I suddenly couldn’t breathe. I was in the middle of my workday, Madison was being watched by my sister in law at my house, and I was in the kitchen walking back to my computer when I started having a hard time breathing. I sat down and tried to take a few calming breaths. I calmly told Briana that I wasn’t able to take a proper breath and I then told her that I’m going to call my oncology team to see what they would recommend. I spoke with a nurse who told me to come in right away. She said she spoke with my oncology team who recommended getting some tests done to see what is going on. I went to the hospital and had an EKG done and also a chest CT. My oncologist said the EKG came back fine and so did the CT. They thought possibly that I could have a blood clot but that wasn’t the case. They recommended taking it easy and to take some ibuprofen when I got home, which I did and I started to feel better and was able to take a deep breath again. This happened on February 2nd. I didn’t have that feeling ever again.

On March 10th, 2021 is when I completed my 6th and final chemo cycle. Despite having a low white blood cell count, I was in pretty high spirits hoping that this was going to be my last chemo session ever. I had the last PET scan on March 22nd and went over the results with Dr. Anderson on March 24th. I was a bundle of nerves and holding Rob’s hand when my oncologist walked into the room and what he started saying was ominous. He started out by saying that the scans look good but aren’t perfect (okay?) but they didn’t want to leave anything to chance (alright, what does that mean?) He proceeded to show us the recent scans and then did a side by side comparison and was showing us the improvement. He then started going over the follow-up protocol for when I would get future scans, visits, etc. I had to stop him and ask outright, “is there cancer left in my body??” and he laughed and said that he probably should have started out the visit by saying that I am cancer free. CANCER. FREE. Even typing this, I’m tearing up. I started crying tears of joy, relief, etc. He said that I am officially in remission and in 5 years I will be considered completely cured of cancer. I’ll be getting CT scans done once every year and visits and blood work done every 6 months.

Dr. Anderson explained that the mass in my chest decreased in size to the point that he’s comfortable with not recommending radiation. He said that I have the option of speaking with the radiation oncologists but that he doesn’t feel the need for me to get radiation done. He knew that I was very against getting radiation if I could avoid it but of course I would listen to medical advice if it was strongly recommended. This was a huge sigh of relief since radiation would take a toll on my body. We left the hospital, I cried some more, and we went immediately to our families the life changing news. We spent the rest of the day at my parents house where Madison was and celebrated by popping a bottle of champagne and ordering sushi. I took the rest of the week off from work to relax and enjoy being cancer free. I got my port out on April 1st. It was such a wonderful and freeing feeling. I was looking forward to this day since I got it put in.

Again, post-op. I think my face says it all.

I can’t describe the feeling that when I check my next visit, it’s not until June. From May 2020 to March 2021, I’ve had a total of 47 visits that were cancer related (not even counting OBGYN visits). To provide a comparison before 2020, I would maybe have 4 visits during the year. We slowly have been spending more time with friends that we haven’t seen since before starting chemo and it’s been an amazing feeling. I’m looking forward to my hair growing back (and my eyebrows which slowly disappeared). If anyone asks me what my future plans are, I tell them that I plan to travel this year and focus on being a cancer free 27 year old. I’m also hoping that by sharing my story, it helps to spread awareness to the fact that it’s vital to get yearly check-ups by your doctor because you never know what might be happening without your knowledge. Also, if something doesn’t feel right, speak up.

I want to send a huge thank you to our friends, family, coworkers, our church, friends of friends, and any others that have prayed for us, brought meals and gifts over, or thought of us. I also want to thank Dr. Anderson and his team at Regions and for all the nurses that took care of me during my chemo sessions. I’m overwhelmed with the amount of love and support that I have felt during this entire journey and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m emotional writing this. Thank you.

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 15X23

I really loved this episode! It was fast paced, the storylines were interesting, and we got to see Meredith be a badass again! More of this please! It actually makes me excited for next week’s episode and the finale! I haven’t been excited to watch Grey’s in a while so this is awesome!

We open with a scene of Zola, Bailey, and Ellis eating breakfast while Meredith packs their lunches and Amelia chats with her. The kids are so cute! I love that we’re seeing them more this season! After Amelia makes a comment about DeLuca Zola clues in and starts teasing them about having boyfriends. Zola always knows what’s up! Also, Zola has on a Pom Pom unicorn necklace! Which is super cute and adorable and I totally want one! Based on this conversation we find out that apparently Meredith and Amelia had the ‘this is who I’m dating now’ conversation and we didn’t get to see it. Which is a total and complete rip off!

Maggie comes in. She’s freaking out because Jackson asked her to move in with him and she’s deflecting that onto Amelia and Meredith. Jeez. There’s an adorable conversation where Amelia says that Meredith looks happy and they talk about how weird that is. Cut to the hospital, Amelia, Link, and a still depressed Jo are talking at the coffee stand. Owen walks up with Leo and when he figures out that Amelia and Link are a couple, he is a huge asshole to her like always. I hate him! Can they please write him off? For the love of toast?

Maggie freaks out when she sees Jackson at work because she clearly doesn’t want to move in with him. Take a hint Jackson. Also don’t spring big decisions like that on the person you’re dating. Especially a control freak like Maggie. Over at the Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic DeLuca and Alex treat a little girl named Gabby. She’s in pain and needs treatment because she’s one of the many kids who have been kept in cages by Immigration under the Trump administration. I can’t believe I just had to write that sentence. What kind of world do we live in when our neighbours are putting kids in literal cages and separating families? This whole thing is sick. Her loving father can’t afford the treatment she needs, but clearly wants her to get better so the doctors have to get creative.

Meanwhile Teddy and Owen receive an incoming trauma. It’s Schmitt with Chief Ripley of Station 19! I like how Schmitt is improving as a doctor. He’s really growing on me this season. Maggie’s been paged because Ripley’s having heart problems. The Station 19 crew come to see him. Schmitt has some great lines in the exam room and Owen gets a pretty good zinger in on Warren about people dating their Chiefs. Tom comes in to the ER and makes Teddy laugh. I like them together! And Teddy’s due in three weeks! Finally! It feels like she’s been pregnant forever!

He asks to stay for the birth. Teddy says yes. Owen walks up and Tom pokes him and is his usual self. I love him! Schmitt comes to see Nico and tries to talk to him. Nico is still frosty and acting like a jerk. Ripley’s getting a CT scan. Owen and Amelia talk in the scan room. Owen tries to talk to Amelia about Link and calls their relationship a secret. She calls him on his crap like the badass she is! Telling him he doesn’t get to ask her about that kind of thing anymore. He tells her she’s overacting like the gaslighting a*hole he is. God I hate him. She tells him he doesn’t get to say things like that either. He keeps pushing, but Amelia stands strong and stays firm. He doesn’t get to have an opinion on this and he needs to shut up and stop talking. Yes! Amelia! You go! Owen needs to screw off and leave and never come back.

Jo is building Legos with Gus, Alex’s autistic patient with the rare blood. A nurse tells Jo there’s a phone call for her. The caller is looking for Alex. It’s about the rare blood they need. A hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada has a patient who can help. She goes to find Alex. Side note: I love that they are mentioning Canada more the last two seasons! Although it would be great if they would include the city, province/territory, and country as that’s how it’s said in real life. Meanwhile Meredith is consulting’s on Gabby’s case. We find out that Gabby is Ellis’ age as Meredith makes small talk. She also might need surgery.

Jo runs into Gus’ Mom on the way to tell Alex. In her excitement she tells her they’ve found a donor. This will come back to bite her in the ass later. Meanwhile we find out that Ripley needs open heart surgery. He wants to go see Vic first. That’s not possible given his condition. He’s not happy about it. He orders the firefighters out. Maggie doesn’t buy his tough guy act for a second. They have some great banter.

Tom and Teddy talk some more about houses in the scan room. I love Tom’s line, “Okay so something more Germanic.” He loves her so much! Gabby is getting a CT scan. Alex and Meredith talk in the scan room about her situation and missing one’s kids. DeLuca comes in and tells them her Dad doesn’t qualify for the state insurance because he makes too much money. Cleaning offices. This is getting out of control.

They find out that Gabby does in fact need surgery. Meanwhile Jo’s on the phone with the hospital in Winnipeg. She finds out the hospital made a mistake. They think Gus is the donor and not the other way around. Maggie treats Ripley some more and they banter about their relationship problems. For some reason when talking about her housing situation Maggie acts like living in Meredith’s heritage home with her, Amelia, and her nieces and nephew who she adores is horrible compared to Jackson’s penthouse apartment. That sounds awesome to me!

Meanwhile Gabby’s father is trying to figure out what to do because he can’t afford her treatment and doesn’t qualify for insurance. Meredith tells him that they’ll take care of it. I love her! Alex tells DeLuca to go prep the patient. As Alex and Meredith walk away Alex turns to her and goes, “You don’t have a plan do you?” I love Alex! I love him and Meredith’s friendship! Jo comes to tell Gus’ Mom the news and overhears her telling her husband on the phone about how great everything is. Jo leaves heartbroken. She’s standing in a hallway when Warren walks by and sees that she’s upset. He tries to talk to her. She refuses and instead runs down the hallway crying. She bumps into Webber who somehow fails to notice this and tells at her to slow down. What a jerk!

Meredith, Alex, and DeLuca prepare to operate on Gabby. Webber walks in concerned about Ellis. We find out Meredith put her name on the insurance forms instead of Gabby’s when DeLuca rats her out. What a jerk! I hate him. Webber’s pissed, but Meredith’s not backing down. There’s no way in hell she’s shipping Gabby off to a county hospital. The system has failed Gabby and her Dad, but Meredith’s not about to. She tells Webber that she’s going to operate and that, “If you’d like to have me arrested when I’m done that’s your call.” Spoken like a true badass! Also, Meredith is wearing her pinky purple scrub cap with the dotted flowers on it today!

Jo goes to Teddy about her mistake. She hopes Teddy can use her military connections to get the blood they need. Teddy tells her everyone in this hospital has called in a favour. The blood is so rare it can’t be found and that’s the problem. Jo starts hyperventilating and Teddy tries to help her and figure out what’s really going on. She refuses and leaves. I like that they are building something here.

Meanwhile Amelia is sitting at a nurses station waiting to hear news about her quadriplegic patient. Owen comes over to talk to her. He wants to talk about the way he acted before about Link. He tells her, “I told you a while back that you were incapable of love, but I’ve been doing some therapy and I’m realizing that I think that it was me that I was talking about not you. And I’m sorry I said that. It’s not true. It’s the opposite of true.” To which Amelia replies, “Thank you.” I’m glad Owen is finally apologizing but that still doesn’t change his years of abuse and violence against women. He tells her Leo misses her and he’d love it if she busted him out of daycare and spent some more time with him. She says she’d love to.

Meanwhile Maggie and Ripley are still bantering. This time about the proposal milk story! They give each other advice. We cut to Gabby’s surgery. They find out they got to her just in time. Whew! They also find out that she has cancer and will need years of treatment. Poor Gabby! DeLuca continues to be an ass and gets on Alex and Meredith’s nerves. Webber walks up to the intercom tells them that he wants to see them after they’re done. DeLuca scrambles to say he had nothing to do with it like an asshole. Webber clarifies that he only wants to talk to Meredith. Seriously why would you spend your whole day intentionally pissing off your girlfriend and her best friend in favour of your boss? He’s such an idiot. Boy bye!

Meanwhile Ben is talking to Bailey about how he’s worried about Jo. Teddy comes in and she also wants to talk to Bailey about her concerns about Jo. We cut to Jo telling Gus’ Mom about the mistake. His Mom is understandably upset then angry. They both begin to cry. His Mom then apologizes and says she was unfair and unkind. Every child deserves parents as wonderful as Gus’! They are kind and they truly love him for who he is. Jo begins crying harder. Gus’ Mom hugs her but slowly realizes something else is wrong. Alex and Bailey arrive to try and help. Alex leads Jo away and Bailey goes to help Gus’ Mom.

Schmitt tries to help Nico some more but Link steps in and tells him to give him space. Webber is yelling at Meredith in his office about the insurance fraud. He’s mad because as part of his AA program he is committed to rigorous honesty. Having to deal with this puts his sobriety in danger and that’s why he’s so pissed. She asks him what he plans to do. He doesn’t know. He says the only thing to do is make Gabby sicker on paper. If she’s in the hospital for 30 days a new state policy automatically kicks in. Why didn’t he just tell her that before they performed the surgery? Meredith is confused because Richard wants her to lie more. Richard says he’s doing it for Gabby and her dad not for Meredith.

Jo is crying on Ben’s shoulder. Alex is yelling in Bailey’s office that he doesn’t know what to do to help Jo. Side note: I love Bailey’s necklace! The necklace game in this episode was on point! Meredith talks to Gabby’s dad about her treatment while DeLuca looks on disapprovingly like a jerk. This causes her to stop smiling. Maggie comes to talk to Jackson and says yes to moving in with him and explains why she didn’t say yes before. Maggie has a great one liner about rom coms! He asks her to come camping with him and says he’ll pro and con with her if she’ll come camping with him. Then Ripley’s labs are back. They are not good.

Amelia’s hanging out with Leo in the Attending’s Lounge. It’s very cute. Link walks in to see if she wants to grab food, but sees she’s already got plans. He talks to Leo and it’s so adorable! He’s really great with kids! I love them together! It’s nice seeing Amelia happy with someone more her speed that’s fun like here! Tom pages Teddy to the scan room. He shows her images of her dream home. He went and found it for her! My heart! He’s rented her an apartment. She loves it! Owen goes to see his therapist. He tells him the treatments are working. He feels clearer and he knows what he wants. He wants to continue the treatments because he wants to feel perfectly clear when he tells her that he loves her.

It’s unclear who he’s talking about. My money’s on Teddy. But it could be Amelia. Or even Cristina or some woman we’ve never seen before. My friend Amy whose not on Tumblr, theorized that they could pull a 180 on us and he could be referring to a family member and he could want to tell them he loves them before he makes a big life change like re-enlisting or something like that. Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past them. Some people Twitter users pointed out that this scenario seems unlikely because of Leo and Teddy’s baby, but having him declare his love to one of the women he’s already been with and said that too seems too simplistic for Grey’s. There’s also not a lot of drama there. I hope if it’s Teddy, Amelia, Cristina, or some other woman they tell him to go duck himself! Because that is what he deserves!

DeLuca’s alone in a patient room at the clinic. Meredith comes to talk to him. She tells him she made a call today and she knows he has a problem with it, but she would do it again. What a Badass! Meredith tells him she cannot and will not apologize for it and she’s not going to change. DeLuca tells her that’s not the problem. DeLuca says he spent the whole day thinking about how Gabby’s situation could have been his if he was born in Honduras instead of Italy. That doesn’t fit his behaviour at all but okay. He tells her he’s in awe of what she did today. He says he was afraid if he opened his mouth the only thing that would come out is ‘I love you’. At which point he actually says it and tells her he loves her. Oh boy.

They’ve only been dating for a few months and already he’s decided she’s the love of his life and he loves her. Meredith is having none of that! She stares at him blankly. Then says, ‘Oh.’ Stutters then says, ‘Well okay. Glad we cleared that up.’ Nods then leaves! Haha! Her reaction cracked me up. What an idiot! Welcome back Meredith! I was wondering if this was going to come up at some point.

DeLuca’s been head over heels since the beginning and everyone’s always talking about how he loves her, but never the other way around. DeLuca’s infatuated and convinced himself he’s in love with her. Meredith just sees him as a hot date that’s fun to fool around with. She’s not in love with him. He’s not going to live with her. She’s not marrying this guy. He’s not going to be a step dad to her kids. The only one that thinks that is him. He just got a rude awakening! I hope this is the end and he leaves to do his Fellowship somewhere else next season.

This kind of thing is all relative too. Teddy and Tom have been dating for a similar period of time, but they’re much more serious. It’s all about context. Tom started dating her knowing she was pregnant. They’ve both been married before. They’ve both lost people. Teddy’s lost her husband and Tom’s lost his son and had his marriage collapse as a result. The difference is that Tom shows his love for Teddy instead of saying it. He makes her laugh, buys her things that make her happy or make her life easier, she needs a nice place for her and her baby to live so he goes out of his way to find one for her. He loves and supports her unconditionally and that’s what true love really is. He tells Owen he loves Teddy to get him to back off and stop making Teddy miserable and causing her even more pain. He doesn’t have to tell Teddy, she already knows and vice versa.

You can see a similar situation with Amelia and Link. They are newly dating and so they aren’t there yet, but they are compatible and happy and having a good time. They don’t need to have the ‘this is what you mean to me’ conversation because they show their love, they don’t say it. If you have to say it this early it’s probably doomed or one sided. That’s the problem with big sweeping declarations. They look cool, but they only work if the other person is mutually into it. If not then it falls flat. Like with Meredith and DeLuca. He’s declared his love for her and she does not feel the same way. Which if he was paying attention and wasn’t so selfish and self absorbed he would have picked up on. But he doesn’t and he didn’t because everything is all about him. He assumes Meredith feels the same way or will automatically reciprocate or be wooed by his declaration.

He doesn’t know Meredith at all. It took her a long time to even admit to herself that she loved Derek and wanted to be with him because of everything that had happened. For her declaring that she loves someone and meaning it is a huge deal. It’s not something she takes lightly and it’s not a quick process for her. Some Twitter users also pointed out how alone DeLuca is. At this point he doesn’t have any real friends, he’s given up on Neuro as a specialty for no discernable reason, and is flopping around. He’s only real personal relationship outside of Meredith at this point is his sister Carina. That’s really pathetic. All of Meredith’s friends dislike or are ambivalent towards him. He’s put all of his eggs in one basket without checking if the basket felt the same way.

Meanwhile Maggie and Andy go to tell Ripley about his test results. They find out he’s gone! I watched the Station 19 follow up episode and it was a total letdown. I got super into Vic and Ripley in preparation for the crossover. I watched clips on YouTube and got all caught up and was super pumped. The episode was awful. They created stupid pointless drama with Ripley’s sister and Vic and then they made it seem like they were going to pull a hell Mary at the last second only to kill Ripley off in a super dumb way and have all of the build-up be for nothing.

A character’s death is only poignant if you build the character up over several seasons. Baiting viewers with Vic and Ripley’s romance and then killing him off in the show’s second season before the finale makes no sense. It’s a really cheap ploy that doesn’t come off well and is really bad writing. One of the issues with this too is that now Vic can’t date anyone for a least a season without it being super weird and forced. Grey’s has been battling with this, unsuccessfully, since Derek died. Why the writers looked at that and thought, “Yes, let’s dig ourselves into the same ridiculous hole no reason!” I have no idea.

Grey’s didn’t have a choice. Patrick Dempsey decided to the leave the show unexpectedly and killing him off was the only option that made sense since the alternative was having him leave his wife and children for some research assistant in Washington. That wasn’t the case with Ripley as the actor was still available which makes the whole thing pointless. It also means I have no reason to watch Station 19 now. Unfortunately, the promo for next week’s Grey’s Anatomy episode doesn’t show anything so there’s nothing for me to comment on sadly. Hopefully it’s good! We’ll just have to wait and see!

Less Than.

It’s been awhile. Let’s catch you up to speed.

June 13th I had a CT scan that showed NO progression, and POSSIBLY necrosis on some of the tumors on my liver. (Necrosis = death, so yay!) Dr. Rose said that was as good as we could have hoped for and thought we should move forward with possible embolization through Penn since they seem to be the experts in NETs. He wasn’t sure if the clinical trial of chemo/bland embolization was running currently due to Covid, so he said I should reach out. I scheduled the consultation appointments, which were originally not until August, but got bumped to July 22nd.

My in-home phlebotomist was a no-call, no-show on the 30th, so I called my office and found out there was a mix up, and they were scheduled to come the same day as my injection, so I had to go to Labcorp in person. I was pretty anxious about that since we aren’t do to much real-worlding these days, and they may or may not be doing Covid testing there, but I mustered the courage, and went. There was only one person in the waiting room and only two employees, one of which dealt with me from beginning to end exclusively. Everyone was masked up; it was smooth and painless. (Shout out: I ALWAYS have a good experience at the Labcorp on Easton Road in Abington, near the hospital. They are rockstars!) Those results came back looking a-okay.

I had my 5th Lanreotide injection on July 2nd and met with a very stressed Dr. Rose who still may or may not be retiring, due to some major changes with the hospital. He said labs and scans were good, and to keep him posted about my appointments with the folks at Penn. Overall, I felt fine after the injection. My GI issues are still relatively prevalent after the Whipple, so I never know if what I am dealing with is “normal” or an issue. And right now, with you know, the world crumbling, it could just be stress.

So fast forward to the 21st, the day before my appointments, and I get a call that Penn doesn’t have the scan images or pathology report and that maybe we should reschedule my appointments (you know, the ones I’ve been waiting a month for). They said the problem with this was that the doctors like to look at them in advance. Although, a point I brought up to the nurse, I don’t see how much advance looking was going to be done after 6 pm the night before. So we rescheduled my 10:30 a.m. call with Dr. Soulen to 6 p.m. so there was time to review, in the hopes that SOMEHOW I could get both reports and images to their office between the call and the appointments. Without any other options, my gracious husband made the one hour drive, and carted them into Penn at 7 am on the 22nd. (Only to spend 20 minutes there looking for the building, since I was never told any information as to where the doctor was located with my appointment being through telehealth, and like a dummy, didn’t ask.) Images delivered, and I get a call at 9:45 ish saying Dr. Soulen is still calling me at 10:30 again (and now my mother, the child pacifier, won’t be here in time, since I told her to come later when the appointments were rescheduled).

My first call was with Dr. Michael Soulen in interventional radiology. I introduced him to the two-legged noise makers who would provide a classic toddler soundtrack, and he seemed pleasantly on board with the situation.

My mom did show up during the call just as things got hairy (Charlie had all the cushions off of the couch and my cat litter barricade was no longer stopping Olive from making a bee-line for the steps). Gram to the rescue, as per usual.

Dr. Soulen liked my June scan. He said it was great because that meant we didn’t HAVE to embolize (despite him mentioning several times how seeing a liver like mine makes him drool because of how much he enjoys embolizing livers). Dr. Soulen said that the treatment plan should be “to ride the horse until it gets tired” because we only have so many horses. Therefore, we stay on the Lanreotide until it stops doing what it is supposed to before trying something new, as the treatment options are limited and there isn’t data on whether or not they can be repeated multiple times successfully. Especially with someone who has a history of a second cancer (Hodgkins) and chemotherapy. He also clarified some things about the embolizations. He said that a bland embolization and chemoembolization both cut off the blood flow to the liver, something we cannot do, because during my Whipple they removed a duct that helps my pancreas get rid of bile and bugs, which now filter into my liver. Normally, this isn’t a major issue, but when you embolize a liver like this, it will cause a liver abscess in 20% of patients, landing them in the hospital for a while (because a serious infection like this requires IV antibiotics) and obviously with two little ones and Covid, that’s not something I’d like to risk right now. There is a third type of embolization - radioembolization - that instead of cutting off the blood flow, shoots in little radioactive beads that are attracted to the tumors and give a very direct dose of radiation to them. This makes patients a bit more fatigued, but only has a 5-7% rate of abscess or infection, which is better, of course. That being said, none of this is the plan for now, and may not be for several years, as long as the Lanreotide keeps doing its job (he estimates 3-5 years at best).

With all of that information and hearing that the Lanreotide is not expected to work forever, I really wanted a more accurate prognosis, although nothing is certain in the world of cancer. He said that he has some patients who do these drugs and trials and make it into the double decades - but those are usually the grade 1 tumor patients (I am a grade 2, grade 3 being worse). So, he said a single decade is more in tune with what patients in my situation should expect - but that 5, 10, 15 years is possible. While I WANTED to hear some real talk, and I didn’t expect to hear that everything is good, that was still a little jarring. At 37, and with a 1 and 3 year old, 15 years might not even get me to high school graduation, and that’s the high end. Thinking about leaving my family in the next 5-10 years is beyond terrifying. He said that my liver right now is functioning as it should. It’s “more cheese than holes.” I should be glad for that. I am.

Here you can see my two scans. Left is June, right is February. This may not be the perfect shot (I was trying to take a screenshot while we were talking), but you can kind of see some of the white spots (cancer) with some blackness (necrosis), so, that’s cool.

The second call was with Dr. Ursina Teitelbaum, the oncologist who specializes in neuroendocrine cancer. She was awesome to chat with, as always, and agreed to take over my care - something I needed to ask because Dr. Rose is ready to pass me along like the worst re-gifted patient ever. I also asked her some morbid questions and was particularly surprised to hear her response, too. She said had my June scan indicated progression in any way, it would have likely meant a 1-2 year prognosis. I am a little annoyed and confused as to why no one said anything like this to us in previous visits. I mean, you’d think someone with toddlers deserves to know that they may only have 12 months to live, especially when they are currently spending their time in quarantine and not doing any of the things that mean the most to them. She agreed with Dr. Soulen, we should hold off on the embolization for now, and wanted to see me again (virtually) in September. She also said she would get another scan scheduled for me for before that appointment and that we could plan for someone to come to my home to do the Lanreotide injections, rather than have to get into Penn each month for that when I am trying to work and parent this fall.

One thing that she said that stuck with me, was that she believes this pandemic is going to get a lot worse this fall, and that regardless of what happens, we should be careful, but not limit visits with loved ones. We need our family and friends around us for support. We need that connection. While maybe her message was to “live like you are dying” because I am, in a way, dying, I think she is living this way too. I think she believes that the damage that months and maybe years of this will do to our psyches may be greater than the risk of getting Covid (not worse than actually getting it, but again, being “safe” and careful, in masks, etc.) Just something to think about, especially for my family.

In other news, my anxiety has been through the roof (not surprisingly so - I did get diagnosed with cancer exactly a month before we got hit with a global pandemic, ya know). After a talk with my primary, we upped my Lexapro dosage from 5 mg to 10 mg last week. According to my OBGYN, that’s still a very low dosage (they said they prescribe 20 mg to woman for PMS sometimes, so there’s that), so we will see. I really think I need something for panic attacks, other than a 32 ounce frozen margarita from Mad Mex. They get costly. My primary has given me a couple Ativan doses to hold me over as the new dosage of Lexapro kicks in and wants me to follow up in three weeks. Til then, expect more of a “hot mess” than you’ve seen before. Please note, hot does NOT indicate I look good right now, and “seen” is perhaps the wrong word, too, since, I barely SEE anyone. The family car that I have been driving wasn't in my name but I was still covered on the insurance until one day I hit a mailbox with the passenger side mirror. The mailbox did not sustain any damage but the mirror somewhat did. I didn't call the police when it happened since the damage was extremely minimal. Anyways, then a couple weeks later a different family member (not the owner) had a little bit of a bigger accident when an animal suddenly appeared in front of the car forcing another accident. I have not had an accident in over 12 years but since I was mentioned after that second accident, I was also excluded from the insurance policy for that vehicle. The insurance cost is something like $158.00 per month but now they want the owner to add about $50 or $60 more per month EACH for the 2 people that were excluded because of the accidents.The car payment is about $415.00 per month and the insurance was $158.00 per month for just the owned which does not even drive the car at all but now they want an extra hundred per month for those 2 excluded drivers if they want to drive that car. So, I am 18, and yesterday my cousin was planned to come in from the UK at the Sky Harbor Airport in, Arizona. Their insurance agent is about 90 miles away, I find out, and will need pictures of the car. Our friends insist that my mother-in-law is just being a mom since we're new at such a transaction (our friends have owned and sold boats, cars, etc., so they are experienced at this, too), meaning that she's being overcautious by saying they need to present proof of liability insurance at the exact time I give them the keys to the car. So, once I give them the title and the keys, are they responsible for when they get the car insurance? A few nights ago I accidentally brushed the side of my neighbor's car with my front bumper (cause she was parked like an idiot as usual). I'm taking full responsibility of it cause it's my fault and I have no problem with that. Initially I was going to pay for the scrape to be compounded out and whatever else was wrong as a result of me hitting it. However, when I spoke to her, she started pointing out a ridiculous amount of things: there's a scratch in addition to the scrape (ok, sure), she says I cracked her light (maybe I did, it's possible) but she's also saying that I caused her tire to pop out and that there's tread missing from it (which makes absolutely no sense because I didn't hit the tire or rim or wheel well at all). Basically, she expects a whole new paint job and a set of tires which is ridiculous for the small amount of damage that was done. I want to make sure she isn't trying to take advantage of my insurance company and cause my rates to skyrocket as a result. The car is a complete piece of sh*t and she doesn't take care of it at all - the paint's dull, the rims are rusted - and I think she's trying to fix these things by making it like they were a result of me hitting her. Today, Claudia shares the steps she and her husband have taken in their pursuit of financial freedom.

Garrett and I were your typical, college-educated millennials (thanks to student loans) who purchased new cars (courtesy of auto loans) and an overpriced, pre-recession home with a 30-year mortgage. We were good consumers, the kind of consumers that lenders love: We spent on credit and we paid our bills on time.

Fast forward to 2014 ⇒⇒ We managed to acquire even more debt. We had a car loan, two car leases, a mortgage, student loans, and credit card debt. Living paycheck to paycheck was exhausting!

It took years for us to realize just how tired we were.

Tired of not having any time.

Tired of not having any money.

Tired of not being able to travel.

After listening to people on the radio talk about similar money problems, we decided it was about time that we get our own finances in order. In 2015, we took a hard look at our spending from 2014. We didn’t like what we saw. We created a plan to get out of debt and change our lives.

Fast forward to today ⇒⇒ We managed to eliminate all of our debt. We’re a one-car family (no auto loan). We paid off our student loans (paid Sallie Mae Navient back). We paid off our mortgage in just over a year.

Let me tell you how we did it.

Home Expenses in 2014: $45,954, in 2017: $7,227

According to Mint, we spent $45,954 on everything “Home” related during 2014. Our “Home” expenses included mortgage, insurance, repairs, remodeling, utilities, and any “stuff” we bought to adorn our home.

Having a 1500-square-foot home was a drag. Between the money going out for heating, cooling, taxes, insurance, and many repairs and the time we spent cleaning it, mowing the lawn, and shoveling snow, we were over home “ownership”.

After spending nearly $46,000, you’d think we might have made a dent in the mortgage. But no, you’d be wrong. At the end of 2014, we still had a mortgage balance of $156,000 because we weren’t paying anything extra. Our house owned us.

Baby Boomers around us were dying to retire but finding themselves handcuffed to jobs in order to pay their mortgages. Neither of us wanted to end up like them. But in 2014, that’s exactly where we were headed.

By 2017, we had sold our 1500-square-foot house, moved into a 500-square-foot house (yes, I’m serious), and managed to pay off the mortgage on the new place. Our $7,227 in expenses included taxes, insurance, utilities, and the “stuff” to take care of the house like soap, rugs, and whatnot.

Auto Expenses in 2014: $10,256, in 2017: $7,466

At one point, both of us had a Volvo and a smart car. That’s right: Our household of two owned four cars.

To acquire four cars, we had two car loans and two car leases, so it’s no surprise that in 2014, we spent $10,256 on debt, repairs, and insurance for four cars.

And you know what’s really crazy?

We had so much stuff in our two-car garage (hobby stuff, home stuff, deck furniture, etc…) that we struggled to park just one car in the garage. The time and money we wasted juggling four cars was obscene.

By the end of 2017, we had become a one-car family. The leases on our smart cars ended in early 2017, so we paid the end-of-leases fees and returned those cars to the dealership. Most of our expenses in 2017 were the result of car repairs and maintenance, like a new computer, fancy synthetic oil, and so on.

Health Expenses in 2014: $14,532, in 2017: $3,726

In 2014, Garrett started seeing a new, out-of-network, out-of-pocket doctor ($$$). It was a last-ditch effort to address a lifetime of chronic fatigue. (He’s doing much better today!)

Also in 2014, I came down with some bizarre symptoms that went undiagnosed (probably tick-borne illness). Thousands of dollars in MRIs, blood tests, and CT scans, no one could explain the difficulty walking, fatigue, and brain fog. (Thankfully, I recovered.)

In total, we spent $14,532 on our medical needs in 2014.

And all of the stress about money certainly didn’t help our health!

Eliminating all of our debt also eliminated much of the stress we felt about money. What a relief it was knowing that we were true homeowners, living mortgage free in our “tiny” house.

Downsizing to the 500-square-foot home freed up a lot of time. No longer were we spending hours each week maintaining or remodeling our home. Instead, we spend our time hiking, kayaking, and doing all the other action verbs we enjoy doing.

Food Expenses in 2014: $15,693.48, in 2017: $7,070

Between our jobs, half-done home remodeling projects, and countless medical appointments, we had convinced ourselves we didn’t have time to cook when we lived in our larger 1500-square-foot home. In fact, we thought that by eating at restaurants every other night, we were actually saving time.

Going to restaurants all the time led to laziness and poor food choices. We weren’t eating well. We weren’t exercising. It’s probably no surprise that our health expenses were as high as they were because we weren’t taking care of our bodies.

Looking back at that year, it’s clear that we were the problem in our lives. The state of our finances was largely due to bad decisions and poor choices. But spending nearly $16,000 on food wasn’t the problem — a lack of accountability was our real problem.

Honestly, food continues to be a struggle — even as I write this in early 2018. When we plan ahead and purchase enough groceries for the week, we’re okay; going out to eat isn’t even a thought. But when we don’t plan portions properly or we forget to go to the store to replenish the stockpile, we run into trouble. Our spending on food is down significantly, but there’s still room for progress.

2015: The Year of Change

In 2015, we started talking about money and what we wanted to do with money in the future. We quickly realized that we weren’t spending money in a way that aligned with our values. Neither of us imagined that we’d be working until 67, but we weren’t doing what we needed to do in order to retire earlier.

I started seeking out online personal finance resources to help us get our financial situation in order. One of the blogs we found was 1500 Days, which is all about financial independence. It was the first time we’d encountered the term; it sounded as if though financial independence would lead to the life we sought.

J.D.’s note: I love 1500 Days. It’s one of my favorite finance blogs. Two of its best features? First, Carl is hilarious. And second, the blog contains plenty of dinosaurs.

By April 2015, we set a plan for getting out of the hole we’d dug, to become money bosses for the first time in our lives. We wanted to achieve financial independence in 1500 days — on 19 May 2019. Having such a lofty goal meant we had to make some big changes.

Since our saving rate was nonexistent, we stopped spending on all non-essentials and started budgeting. We challenged all of our expenses to see how low our spending could go. Each expense we lowered meant more profit margin. But cutting our expenses wasn’t enough to get us out of debt in the timeframe we outlined. We had to take bigger steps to rearrange our lives in order to accomplish our mission.

I left a part-time job in favor of a full-time job. Garrett put extra hours into his W-2 sales job because of the commissions he could earn.

We put the 1500-square-foot house on the market in April 2015. (Sold in May 2016 — $0 in proceeds from the sale.)

We set about the process of building a smaller home. We found our postage-stamp lot — 2500 square feet — and had a small house manufactured to fit on the space. We moved into our 536-square-foot home in September 2015. (We’ve been loving it ever since!)

We sold one Volvo and turned in the two smart cars at the end of their leases. Now, we’re a one-car family. Since I work from home, I’m content with biking around town to run errands or when I just want to hang out by the river.

We started a side hustle and used the income from our side hustle to pay off our credit card debt in October 2015. [J.D. again. Claudia is too shy to say, but I’ll mention it for her. Their side hustle is SEO Audit Guide, a company that helps folks in the online space optimize their websites. I’ve paid for their services myself. Twice.]

We used the debt avalanche approach to eliminate the remaining debts, which we paid off in March 2017. (Here’s a debt avalanche calculator.)

We’re just three years into this journey to FI, and I’m proud to say we are 100% debt free. No mortgage. No car loans. No student loans. No credit card debt.

2018: The Year of Growth

Our purpose for this journey was to create margin in our lives to pursue something purposeful, our “why,” something other than W-2 employment: a life of financial independence colored with slow travel and entrepreneurship.

If you know about the stages of financial freedom, you know we’re working on Stage 4: Security.

In the last several months of our journey to debt freedom, we were able to make monster debt payments — as much as $13,000 toward the end. We were obsessed with getting out of debt, so we didn’t save any money. Sometimes we had as little as $500 in our checking account. Most of the time, we had less than $100 in savings.

In 2017, we made solid progress on Stage 4. We set aside enough in our emergency fund to cover one year’s worth of expenses (about $30,000) and we invested the max in our tax-deferred retirement accounts.

In 2018, we’re focused on growth. We want to grow our income, which will in turn increase our saving rate. This will give us more money to invest. (We’re interested in dividend investing.) After much debate about how we should pursue financial independence, Garrett and I decided that real estate just isn’t right for us. Dividend investing is a better fit. (With real estate, we’d need to invest far too much time and money to generate enough passive income to cover our expenses.)

Pursuing financial freedom changed us for the better. We’ve seen significant improvements in our finances, but also our health and happiness. No longer are we broke millennials living paycheck to paycheck. Somewhere along the way, we became happier, healthier, self-actualizing, wealth-building millennials. And financial freedom is finally in sight.

The Most Beautiful Ball

Did you happen to see the photographs on Instagram of the Swan Ball? If you are a fan of Mark Sikes and Sarah Bartholomew – this year’s Swan Ball was made for you! I know it was for me.

Each year in Nashville, the Swan Ball is held to raise funds for Cheekwood, the mansion and botanical garden located on 55 acres in the Nashville Hills.

Mark and Sarah served as this year’s esteemed Event Designers of The Swan Ball – and as you can imagine Cheekwood was bathed in their favorite color. The tables were pure Mark and Sarah. These two are a perfect match and probably should be working together – they would set the design world on fire, even though they already have, separately!!!

Mark lives and works in L.A., but Sarah lives in Nashville – so their pairing for the Swan Ball makes perfect sense with Sarah holding down the fort, locally. I was drooling over the table settings when they started popping up on Instagram this weekend. They were gorgeous.

But first, what IS the Swan Ball?

This year is the 55th Annual Swan Ball and it is Nashville’s social highlight of the year. Held each June, it benefits Cheekwood Estate and Gardens. The dress is very elegant – white tie. This year the entertainer was the singer Sheryl Crow, the jeweler was Mish, and the honoree was Carolina Herrera. Not bad!

The event is so special the actual Swan Auction is held three weeks before the Ball. On the night of the ball, the elders eat at Cheekwood, while the younger set have their own party and dinner at Massey Hall at the Botanical Center. After dinner, they come to see the “late night” entertainment over at the Late Party at Cheekwood.

And before all the festivities even start, in February there is an Unveiling Party to announce the details of the ball and to see a preview of the décor.

In other words, it is quite an event, to say the least!!!

Mark Sikes is known for his casual style and his love of the color blue. Here is a living room he designed – a vision in blue and white.

But, Mark uses other colors, sometimes, as long as they blend with blue! I love this room!!! And that’s his own rug! Love, love, love that rug.

Mark’s design partner for the Swan Ball, Sarah Bartholomew, is a rising star in Nashville.

Sarah’s design for an entry hall is bathed in blue. One of my favorite foyers ever!! LOVE!!

While Sarah loves blue and white like Mark, she also does a lot of green. She especially loves to mix green with blue.

So…what design scheme do you think Mark and Sarah came up with for the Swan Ball? Blue and white? Blue with red? Green and white? Green with blue???

Patience, patience.

First, let’s take a look at the Cheekwood mansion:

Cheekwood Art and Gardens is located 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville on the once private estate known simply as Cheekwood. The 55 acres contain 12 distinct gardens, including a Japanese Garden, numerous ponds, fountains, walkways, and paths. There is the Pineapple Room restaurant on the property, the large Massey Hall, the Museum of Art, the Frist Learning Center and the Wills Perennial Garden.

The Museum of Art, is the centerpiece of Cheekwood: it is located in the 1920s Georgian mansion once owned by the Cheek Family. The Frist Learning Center is located in the original carriage house and stables.

The story goes that in the 1920s young Mabel Cheek bought a floor to ceiling gilt mirror at an antique shop. It was too tall for the home she and her husband Leslie lived in, so he said either sell the mirror or they would have to move. Apparently Mabel chose to move and that is how Cheekwood came to be built.

The couple met when the single Mabel Wood stopped in Kentucky while on a train trip. Leslie Cheek noticed Mabel and asked her name and where she was going. A few days later a mutual friend brought Leslie to Mabel’s house to properly meet her. He wooed her with weekly gifts of candy and flowers and in 1896, they married in Clarksville. After the wedding, Leslie worked for CT Cheek & Sons, the family’s wholesale grocery distributor.

In 1929, after Mabel had bought her oversized mirror, they hired Bryant Fleming to design a 36 room, 30,000 sq ft house.

Cheekwood, as it was being built.

Originally the property covered 100 acres, and today, it is on 50 acres. But, since Cheekwood is right next to The Warner Parks, together, the two properties are over 2,684 acres of woodland, all designed by Bryant Fleming. Bryant was not only the architect of Cheekwood, he also acted as the interior and landscape designer. When built, the Limestone house had 9 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, an elevator, a hidden staircase, and a library to hold the 1000s of books in the Cheeks’ collection. For their two children, son Leslie Jr. and daughter Huldah, separate suites were built. The house was furnished with English antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Today: A winter view of the back of Cheekwood shows the loggia with the installed French doors. The same fountain remains. At the left of the house you can see a rather ugly gray addition – this building was added in the 60s in order to provide necessary utilitarian rooms and fire escapes, etc. for the art museum, as the house now is.

1958. The original stables. When the house was completed, the Cheek children were both in college, at Harvard and Bryn Mawr. They kept their horses at home in the Cheekwood stables.

Today. The original stables on the right and the carriage house on the left. A new contemporary building was added to connect these two vintage structures. This is now the Frist Learning Center.

The family were world travelers – newspaper clippings reveal they went to such faraway places as India. One trip to England in 1929 lasted three months and was actually a buying trip for Cheekwood. Bryant Fleming accompanied the family on this trip to supervise the purchases.

There are invoices and receipts from that trip that survive today. The family visited Chatsworth and it said the staircase there inspired the one at Cheekwood. Another source says the staircase was inspired by Queen Charlotte’s palace at Kew. Hmmm. The fireplace in the foyer was said to be a Robert Adam but to me there are others in the house that look more like Adam. The mahogany doors came from Grosvenor House in London. The receipt above showed they did buy 4 bronze grilles from Grosvenor House, but no mention of doors. It took seven railway cars to deliver all their London purchases to Cheekwood.

But it all came to an early end for Leslie Sr. who died suddenly in 1935, just a few years after moving into his dream home. Mabel continued to live in the house, entertaining, gardening and spending much of her time in the library.

Mrs. Cheek passed away in 1945 at 72, leaving the estate to her children and grandchildren. Her daughter then moved into Cheekwood with her husband and her daughter Leslie.

The family gifted Cheekwood to the public in 1957. Funds were raised to create the botanical gardens and museum. The former Nashville Museum of Art offered their permanent collection to Cheekwood and finally in 1960, Nashville’s new attraction opened its doors.

For the past two years and at a cost of many millions of dollars, the house has been renovated and for the first time in years the original mirror is now on display, again. Before the renovation, the house was used as a museum and for office space. The renovation will give visitors a look into how the Cheeks actually lived in the house.

Much of the information needed for the restoration was taken from this magazine, published in 1934. I would LOVE to read this!!!

In all, the restoration included several of the rooms: the drawing room, library, dining room, loggia, morning room, recreation room and bedroom suite – all on the first and ground floors. One the second floor, the Museum will keep its galleries for exhibition space. The restoration was just completed and the new rooms were revealed at this years Swan Ball.

At one point, the ivy was allowed to grow all over the limestone. This looks awful!!

Because of the hilly property, the house is a fancy kind of split level! The living room/library wing on the left side of the house is a 1/2 floor below the main floor. Guests entry the foyer on the ground level and take stairs to the first floor where the decorated grand hallway is. The loggia runs parallel to the hallway. To the left is the drawing room which looks out to the side of the house where the Wisteria Arbor and Reflecting Pool are.

1934. An early photo of the foyer with its grand stone and iron staircase that leads to the main floor. A similar tapestry is on the wall today. It’s a shame the original tapestry is no longer there. There are two magnificent staircases in the house and they are really the focal points of the mansion. They are so very elegant and beautiful.

For the Swan Ball, a large tent is set up on the lawn and guests enter it through the grand hallway and loggia.

1934. Back inside, at the end of the grand hallway – are the half set of stairs that led down to the vestibule before the drawing room and library. More medallions embedded in the stucco.

At a winter wedding, with the house decorated for Christmas, a bagpiper entertains the guests as he enters the drawing room vestibule. The molding was painted black back then.

Today: Looking towards the drawing room – the half stairs lead down to the vestibule. Through the wood door at the right is a small anteroom that leads to the library. Notice how pretty the surround around the drawing room’s door is.

And, is that Mabel’s original too-tall mirror? A wonderful photo of the vestibule. Notice the medallion embedded in the wall – so pretty! I love all the medallions that are placed throughout the first floor.

These original photos of the interiors were the ones published in the Country Life Magazine in 1934.

1958. Later, the room was partially cleared out, probably when Huldah’s family moved out the last time. Huldah Cheek held her wedding reception in this drawing room.

The one thing I really don’t care for is the red curtains and of course, they reproduced these for the renovation!

Later, a new rug was placed down. Display cases hold the large Ewers-Tyne collection of Worchester Porcelain. What is so nice about the drawing room being half a floor below the rest of the house is that the ceiling is taller.

No longer a museum, it is meant to recreate how the Cheeks actually lived in the house. Notice the mantel.

Notice the pretty ceiling and beautiful molding.

The paint colors were recreated as were the curtains, which do look exactly like the original ones.

And guests admire the fireplace and the newly restored living room. In the corner is the Steinway piano, a wedding gift from Mabel to her son Leslie Cheek, Jr. It was signed by Theodore Steinway himself, who wished the couple well. I would love to see this room decorated for today without having to recreate how it once was. I would love to see it with whiter walls and neutral curtains, not red, and with a more neutral rug – it is such a beautiful room.

The Wisteria Arbor overlooks the hills and is a favorite spot where brides pose for a portrait. Below this is the reflecting pond.

In the winter the arbor is exposed. I wonder why they didn’t use evergreen wisteria. Maybe it doesn’t grow in Nashville?

1934: Across from the drawing room is the paneled library. Here is an early view of the room filled with the Cheek’s English antiques. Notice the clock above the mantel. Also, the door to the left of the mantel leads to the vestibule and up to the grand hallway.

Later, the room was cleared out. The house/museum’s silver collection was displayed in this library.

After the recent renovation, the library looks as it once did, filled with the books the family owned. Also the furniture is similar to what was once there. The same original chandelier hangs above. The door to the right leads to the drawing room.

Along the wall of the staircase is an arch that opens up to the hall beyond.

Each year there are different artists who do installations for the Swan Ball. Here it was the great Chihuly who was invited. One of his light fixtures was installed in the second stair hall. It is fabulous!!!!! You can see the rotunda here.

The second stairhall – looking back toward the grand hallway and further, into the drawing room and the French Doors that lead out to the wisteria arbor! To the right of the mirror and console, out of sight, are the doors that lead to the dining room.

And another art installation – chandelier. Under this stair, you can barely see an arched door that leads to a bedroom suite. More about that bedroom, later.

The morning room is going to be restored. It has marble floors, a bay window and it opens to a terrace. This room is a stop on the Christmas tour.

The 1934 photo of the recreation room. What an incredible room! Look at the furniture. It looks like a English house in the 18th century. Most exciting is behind the stove and terracotta brick fireplace is the hidden staircase! On the far left, notice the suzani fabric on the table!! Wow!!

1934: Mabel’s mother slept in this room – through the short door under the stairs. The two room suite is separated by the black and white marble bathroom. This room has been turned into an office, but it was restored back to the bedroom.

And here is the office that was once the two bedroom suite. I wish we could see the fireplace at the left!

1934. In this room is the original mirror that Mabel bought which was too tall for her house, causing her husband Leslie to build Cheekwood. Today, the mirror is back at Cheekwood, in the drawing room vestibule, after the restoration.

1934: The reading room on the second floor. This amazing room is quite different from the Georgian style.

This girl poses in the Reading Room, an atmospheric, small room on the second floor that will be restored. With its dark wood beams and stucco mantel, the room is very Spanish in feel! Wonder what happened to the medallion on the mantel?

Today. The Reading Room cleared out.

It’s a shame that there is no photograph of the master bedroom suites or bathrooms.

The auction catalogue gives a hint of the decorative scheme for the 2017 Swan Ball designed by Mark Sikes and Sarah Bartholomew.

There were 475 floral arrangements created for the dining tables, along with numerous other arrangements created by The Tulip Tree.

Mark Sikes brought along his biggest fans! Sarah is in white. These dresses are all gorgeous! I love the gingham and the red/pink combination which was custom designed by Mark.

Past the loggia the doors open to the tent with the gazebo designed by Mark and Sarah. This is the area where drinks were served. Beyond is the dining tent. Notice how they tented the tent (lol!) with Mark’s signature blue and white fabric – and really Sarah’s too! The gazebo is covered in wisteria – a nod to the famous Wisteria Arbor outside the Cheekwood drawing room!

The party is in full swing. I wonder how many yards of fabric Mark used? AND I wonder if they are reusing the fabric???

The dining tent is a mix of round and rectangular tables. Chintz fabric skirted the round tables!!! Round drum chandeliers decorated with greenery.

Notice how pretty the calligraphy table numbers are. Rattan votives. Linen napkins. Silver mint julep cups. Very very nice!!!

The stage has a blue and white! checkerboard dance floor – and notice the backdrop: a huge handpainted chinoiserie mural. Of course!! This is Mark after all!
