Oblivion: Chapter 1, Part 2
Buy me a coffee?
A/N: Sorry this next part took so long, I had headaches for the last few days and couldn’t look at my laptop for the same amount of time. Please make sure you read part one before this, or you might not know how this whole thing works. :)
Warnings: minor gore, blood mention
Characters: Detective Inspector George Wallace, Henry Schneep, Jameson Jackson, Marvin Jones, Robert Davies, Chase Brodes
Word count: 1225 words
“Dr. Schneep, I know you’re very busy, but I just need the full story.”
“I understand, Inspector, but my story does not have any connection to Anton.”
“It will help us understand Chase’s story.”
“Ah, I understand now. I shall tell you what I know.”
It had been a long night at the surgery. Henry rubbed his eyes as he climbed into his car, yawning as he started up the engine.
As he drove home, he turned on the radio to listen to the news, shaking his head against the drowsiness. He bought a coffee from the drive-through café before parking in the front drive of the house. The mailbox was full, so Henry knew Chase was still out, looking for his missing family.
When he opened the front door, the smell of his grandparents’ fabric softener wafted out. He looked at his coffee, downing the final drops, then stepped inside.
A man stood on the stairs, the colours of his clothes and appearance bright against the monochrome of the wall and stairs. The intruder stared at him, blue eyes wide in fear.
“Who are you? How did you get inside?” Henry closed the door behind him, pulling his phone out and ready to call the police.
“No, please, do not call the authorities. I do not know how I got here. One minute I was climbing the stairs to my room, and the next I was here. I am just as confused as you are.” Henry lowered his arm, stepping forward to look at the intruder more closely.
“Come down those stairs. Let me put the kettle on.” He watched as the visitor walked down the stairs, walking into the kitchen as if he owned the place. The doctor put the kettle on, then stepped back outside to look at the stairs. It was as though someone had turned off the colours on that one patch of stair and wall. Chase is not going to like this.
He pulled out his phone again, calling his cousin’s number with shaky hands. When the vlogger answered, he told him to come home and call Marvin. After putting the phone down, Henry made tea for the visitor, and another cup of coffee for himself.
“What is your name?”
“Jameson. Jameson Jackson. My friends call me JJ.”
“Can I have your name for the record?”
“Jameson Jackson.”
“Age?”
“Twenty eight.”
“What is your relation to the Brodes and Schneeple families?”
“I don’t know. I don’t think I’m related to them at all.”
JJ whistled as he ran the duster along the shelf, sneezing as the dust flew everywhere.
His sister had gotten married over the weekend, and he was getting used to the new-found silence around the place. He still couldn’t play any records at full volume, because the walls were thin, and he hated that fact.
Having completed the cleaning downstairs, JJ picked up the basket of folded clothes and headed upstairs. The staircase was old, veneered wood that creaked on the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth step. He looked at the peeling yellow paint on each step as he manoeuvred the basket past the railings, making a mental note to repaint the whole staircase as soon as possible.
When he reached the dreaded tenth step, instead of a creak JJ heard mutterings echoing through his house. He strained his ears to listen, not quite understanding the dialect nor the language. He blinked, thinking his eyes had begun to play tricks on him as the colours began to wash out around the place, then dropped his basket as the world spun around him.
When at last he opened his eyes again, he was on the steps of his – no, someone else’s house. It looked like his own, but the house was painted pastel green instead of his custard-yellow, and questionable devices were set up everywhere. He looked at his feet, seeing that he was standing in a space on the stairs that had its colour drained from it.
He started as the door opened, revealing a man in a sharp suit, staring at him in shock and confusion. The man walked inside, taking something out, possibly a new-age device to call the authorities. JJ, fear coursing through his blood, pleaded with the man, telling him truthfully that he didn’t know how he got here.
Accepting an offer for tea, he showed himself into the kitchen, which obeyed the layout of his own house, and sat down.
“What is your name?” JJ bit his lip, unsure whether he should trust this man, but opened his mouth anyway.
“Jameson. Jameson Jackson. My friends call me JJ.”
 “Name.”
“Shut up. I’m concentrating.”
“Marvin, for once can your family actually do what I ask?”
“Nope.”
Marvin’s newest grimoire arrived on his windowsill, wrapped in several layers of silk and brown paper. After Jackie and Anton left the house, he began to unwrap his new item. As the storm raged outside, Marvin prepared his ingredients to try yet another summoning spell.
He had been interested in advancing his necromancy skills to summon his mother and ask her about his family, and the suspiciously cheap pricing on the spell-book had made his plan easier to work on.
Carefully, he began to recite the spell, focusing on his mother: her appearance, her voice, the smell of her perfume. Then he began to think about his family tree, and how he knew next to nothing about it. He wondered if his mother knew her father, or even her grandfather. Suddenly, the pile of ingredients burst into flames, signalling the completion of his spell.
There was no sound outside the door. No smell of his mother’s perfume, no distant hum of her voice. Marvin put his items away, sighing in defeat. He had failed, for the first time in at least a decade. Disappointment made Marvin crawl into his bed and hide under the covers, ignoring the ringing phone and waiting for either Jackie or Anton to return home.
 “Name.”
“Robert Davies.”
“You say you were dead?”
“Yes.”
“And somehow you’re related to JJ and Marvin?”
“Maybe…”
The storm was fierce outside the cemetery. At the top of a hill, isolated from other family members, a tombstone loomed. The name and dates had been worn off the surface, but everybody knew the grave had been made twenty years ago.
A bolt of lightning illuminated the stone surface, and the dirt before it shifted. As rain pelted down on the ground, white stumps began to emerge from the ground. Slowly, as if a plant was growing, the stumps grew longer, thinner, and eventually converged into a hand.
A large crack was heard in the distance, followed by a second bolt of lightning, splitting the tombstone into two. The hand continued to emerge, growing into an arm, a shoulder, a torso, and finally, a head.
The eyes were white and milky, blinking in the rain as the mouth opened, gasping for air. A second hand reached out of the ground, less intact than the first, with the forearm missing. As the figure pulled themselves from the ground, they noticed they also had a hole in their throat and a large hole on their left leg.
The creature reached back into the ground, retrieving their missing arm, then stood on shaky legs and left the cemetery.

EPISODE 5
11 July, 02:00 PM
“It’s not going to fit, Nicole.”
“It is, just follow the instructions.” I don’t have time to follow the instructions. Not that I have anything better to do right now, but everybody knows it’s a waste of time.
Ugh, it’s not going well, I need to start following instructions. I’m helping Nicole with redecorating her room and we’re in the middle of putting her new cabinet together. Just taking a lunch break. We’ve been repainting walls, assembling furniture and trying to figure out how to install new lightning all morning up till now. Walls – navy blue, furniture – dark brown wood, lights in a warm hue, hidden behind the bed and underneath the desk. An extremely cozy vibe, but not very practical in my opinion. I become the laziest person on Earth when the environment around me works in my favor. If it’s too comfy, don’t expect me to be anything but slothful. I would have never finished any of my homework if it weren’t for my dad’s spear room which he uses as his library. Hundreds of history books sorted by periods of time and if possible, by color. It looks like an office, and feels like it, too. It seems silly, but I swear every time I walk into my room I start yawning.
 03:40 PM
We were almost done cleaning up the mess we made, I was climbing up the ladder to scratch the rest of the paint off of the window when I felt my phone slipping out of my pocket. My heart skipped a beat when I found out the whole screen was covered in cracks. I prayed to Higher Forces for it to still be fully functional, but the Higher Forces didn’t listen. The worst thing was, the camera didn’t work. I don’t have any money to buy a new phone. I can still text, at least.
04:30 PM
I went and asked a guy how much would it cost me to repair my phone, and he said that not less than $250, depending on how much damage was made inside. Yup, not going to happen.
05:15 PM
I got inspired by Nicole today to tidy up my room as well. I don’t know where I got this energy from, but I shouldn’t complain. I’ve been home for only four days and it already looks like a tornado came to visit. What’s so hard about folding and putting clothes back in the closet right after taking them off? It doesn’t sound that difficult but sometimes I feel like this simple task is too hard and complex for me to do. The worst part is that I’m very much aware that I am the tornado, and yet I can’t stop throwing and leaving stuff around. I need discipline. And since I don’t have anyone to boss me around, I guess I have to be my own boss.
Speaking of being my own boss, I need a plan on how to find out what did I time-travel back for, and just because I don’t have any other idea where to begin, I’ll start with finding out what happened to me the night I got beaten. The thing is I don’t want anybody to know, especially after I was so openly stubborn about not wanting to get involved, so I can’t just walk around and ask questions. I mean, I have to ask questions, but I have to be smart about it.
I thought I’d start with investigating (God, I already hate it. Here you go, detective!) the alley I was found in. I’m sure I won’t find anything useful, after all, it’s been eleven days and all the traces must be long gone, but maybe, just maybe, if I go to the place I know for a fact I was present that night something would click and more memories would come back. Isn’t it worth a shot? I think it is.
THINGS TO TAKE WITH ME (on this exciting, full of danger adventure):
1.      A flashlight, to lighten the area
2.      A compass, if I get lost in the alley
3.      One small and one big “medipack”
4.      A voice recorder, to always be ready to document events in detail
5.      A climbing ax, to climb stuff, obviously
6.      Two HK USP Match pistols, for the bad guys
7.      Jesus Christ, I’m kidding, I’m not Lara Croft and this is not an adventure
But in all seriousness, it is kind of scary. I think the reason I run away from it is that I’m afraid of what’s waiting at the end and it’s so humiliating to admit because from what I understand of Nora’s riddles, someone’s in trouble and it seems like I don’t even want to help them. Like I’m too scared. I’m not a leader, I never was, I never know what to do. People make decisions, I follow. Don’t I trust myself or is following directions just easier?
Get it together, Ian. You got this!

~~
Summary: Ethan snoops a bit and finds something that Alex never wanted anyone to find.
~~
“Alex?” Ethan called into the dark room. No response. He turned on the light and looked around.
“Guess he’s not here,” he murmured to himself, taking a look around the room.
The room was nice. There was a closet in the far right corner and a dresser on the left wall, both colored a dark wood, and a large bed with black sheets. The walls were black, or perhaps a near-black sort of blue, and there were dark curtains on the window. There were few personalized items in the room - a few books on the dresser, another on the nightstand, small gifts on the window sill, odd articles of clothing thrown across a chair - but one item seemed to stand out. On the nightstand, behind the book, was a box - a small chest, really - that looked rather ornate. It was open, the only open thing in the room. Curious, Ethan made his way towards the small chest.
The chest was magical, the air around it a subtle type of heavy from all of its enchantments. (That probably should’ve been his first clue to turn away, really, but he didn’t stop to think about it). The inside of the chest was lined with red velvet, and sitting upon that was a small rectangular object with buttons on one side. Upon picking it up, Ethan realized it was a tape recorder. He hesitated, listening to see if anyone was coming - then he pressed play.
“December 10th, xx43, log 742.” It was Alex’s voice, speaking in Neltimin, the date only eight years ago. “Hey Aria, it’s me. As…always, uh… It’s almost dumb how I’m still doing this, but… Anyways, the girl that I told you about last time - Lacy, remember? - turned out to be - get this - working for my father. Big shocker, right?” He didn’t sound surprised or shocked at all. His tone was more deadpan, than anything. He sighed. “Still wants me to be a part of his ‘business empire’ or whatever the gossip calls it these days. It’s a shame that he always picks girls like her, the pretty ones with little mind of their own who want pretty, rich husbands to help them give them meaning in life. Guess that’s why I liked you so much, you just… weren’t that, weren’t like anyone I’d been around before. You’d probably hate girls like that. You seem like the type to… but then again, you thought similar things to me, and…so I shouldn’t assume what you would or wouldn’t like.” He gave a short laugh. “Assumptions, am I right? They’re why you…” He trailed off, humor gone, and he turned quieter. “Not that you have much of anything right now, but…still…the mindset is what’s important, I guess.” He was silent for a moment. “I don’t know, I’m just - rambling, like always. Not even that you, that you care or anything, you're… I’m just…” He sighed again. “Whatever,” he said, “that’s been done over a thousand times, you don’t need that again. I don’t.” A pause. “Whatever. Log end.”
“January 4th, xx44, log 743.” He sounded regretful, or maybe hungover. “Hey Aria, it’s me - you know when you get really drunk and do something really stupid? At the New Year's party I kind of… well, I think I made out with someone, but it’s kind hard to remember. Ginger keeps teasing me about it but making sure no one hears, so maybe it was them? Or maybe they saw? But I don’t know…-”
Ethan pressed the fast forward button.
“-ne 15th, xx46, log 901.” He sounded tired in this one. “Hey Aria, it's… me. Always is. Just saying sorry, again. I never…” He paused, then groaned in frustration. “No, forget it, you know that. Well, if you listened to these, which I doubt you would even if you could. Just - forget this, it’s stupid, why do I ever -” he growled in frustration then said -“ log end.”
“November 26th, xx46, log 902.” Ethan knew this date. This was the date he- “Aria, hey. Sorry for the absence. Joined a new guild last week and just met my new team a bit ago - well, most of them. One or two were out running errands when I came in, so I guess I’ll meet them later. I’m in my new room right now and it’s - fitting. They say they decorate the room to the color of your aura, did you know that? - you probably did, you were smart like that. Well, after the room is yours, you can do whatever to it - some put up wallpaper or posters or just repaint - but that’s never really been my thing. I don’t even know what I’d change it to, anyways. Reminds me of home, if I’m honest - the blacks, the dark blues, the Henderson blue… the black wood or the dark wood or the oak wood… all it needs are some chandeliers, heads-down servents, the whips, and Father’s disapproving aura and boom, I’m back home.” He gave a small laugh without joy, then fell silent a moment. “I don’t like it,” he said finally, his voice small. “But what would I change it to, anyways? Not like I’ve known anything different…” There was a sound and some muffled talking. A pause. “Looks like I’ve got to go. Dinner, and all. Log end.”
“November 27th, xx46, log 903.” He sounded… shook, for lack of a better term. “Aria? Aria, I - I saw… Are you-? No, I’d know if you were, but… Aria, one of my new team members, one of the ones who were out doing errands last night, I could’ve sworn at first that she was… that she was you. It sounds weird to say that, and maybe even crazy, but Aria, she looks exactly like you do. Or, did. Do? Well, the point stands, she looks like you. I don't… I don’t know… I don’t know why, or how, or what’s even happening. I just… I don’t know. I…” He made sounds like opening and closing his mouth with no words coming out and several distressed noises, but ultimately said nothing for a few moments. Then he paused, sighed, and went on. “…Anyways, just… thought you should know, I guess. Log end.”
“November 30th, xx46, log 904. Aria,” he said bluntly, “I think I’m in love. Ok,” he backtracked, “well, that’s a bit much, more like…” he made a hum of mild distress, “it just sounds so childish to call it a crush, but… I mean I guess?? I don’t know, Aria, but it’s just I heard him - yes, him, I know, it’s a surprise to me, too - laugh and just sephram saints, Aria, I could swear the room was brighter when he did. I’m not kidding, I think the room was literally brighter when he smiled. He might be a light user? I think the file said one of my new teammates was a light user. Is it him?…”
Alexander had had a long day, and just wanted to rest. He’d just left the training deck and was completely exhausted, both physically and mentally - he could really use a shower. And a nap. Both sounded utterly fantastic to his aching muscles, and he headed to his room to do so (he didn’t like using the locker room showers - it was too public and anyone could walk in. Better to do so in the privacy of his own bathroom).
He saw a light from under his door. Rarely did he turn on the lights in his room (given that he was a shadow user, darkness was of no problem with the night vision), much less leave them on. Someone was in his room. Ticked off and annoyed, he walked a bit faster, assuming some political snoop was digging through his things (you’d be surprised at the lengths journalists would go to get a good story). He entered his room and his stomach dropped so suddenly that he thought it’d plummet to the first floor of the building.
“…Aria? Aria I fucked up, I fucked up really bad Aria. I don’t - I don’t know -”
Ethan McCain was sitting on his bed, his back facing the door, listening to the most personal thing he physically owned. Fear and panic built up in his chest, a coil winding around his lungs tighter than a noose, making it hard to breath, hard to think - the words he knows being the only thought echoing in his brain, bouncing like a ball off the walls. He strode - not thinking, not feeling - towards the tape.
Ethan remembered this day - December 1st, three years ago, the day where he declared to himself that he’d hate Alexander Henderson forever, a hatred which lasted until only two months ago when he -
Ethan hadn’t even heard him in the hall, hadn’t seen the overhead light turn off, but had heard the heavy thunk of boots near him and all of the sudden it was dark and getting darker as Alexander Henderson plucked the tape recorder from his hands and slammed it back in the chest. Ethan looked up to see his eyes large and his aura glowing through, colors of red and blue and white and gold among the flurry of black shadowy tendrils. He seemed taller, bigger than usual, fear the main emotion in his large, glowing eyes, and inspiring the emotion quite thoroughly in the observer.
“Get. Out.”
Alexander growled - a deep, rumbling sound, barely even human.
In fact, Alexander didn’t even know if he had actually spoken in the first place. But the healer’s eyes widened, and didn’t need telling twice. He flew from the room, far away from Alexander, and Alexander was left alone.
“-mber that guy I told you about, the one with the smile and the brightness? I don’t know what I did - well, no, I do, I said something stupid and dumb and and mean, but I don’t know how - and oh saints Aria I fucked up, he hates me now, I fucked up Ar-”
Alexander closed the lid on the chest and the recording stopped. The room was silent save for his breathing, growing more panicked by the second. The coil around his chest was tightening, cutting into his lungs, making it hard to breath. He was shaking, shaking, his brain chanting he knows he knows he knows - he put a hand on the bedside table to steady himself, took a breath of air to calm himself… his knees gave out, his vision pulsing and swimming before him, his stomach lurching like he was about to vomit.
Oh joy, said a distant thought in the back of his brain, a panic attack. Just what we need.
The panic attack drowned out that voice pretty quick.
