torn between "letting fandom have it's fun however it wants" and posting something like "the only reason we know so much about the Norse gods in the first place is that nobody was celebrating Christmas while they were writing that stuff down."
#i get it i know yeah some people are REALLY into christmas#and there's worse Xmas Fic Ideas out there (usually involving Actual Currently-Observed Faiths)#but it does feel a *bit* odd when the Characters Who Definitely Celebrate Christmas include gods from entirely separate pantheons u kno?#but yes Scandanavia being Christianised relatively late and them having the chance to get literate before that happened#is why we even know who many of these borrowed-by-Marvel gods are and what they supposedly did#compare the anglo-saxons where we have very few pagan texts and some of the theonyms have had to be reconstructed#and stuff like who's 'eostre' other than her name survived in the name of a major christian festival? who was she? what'd she do?#so a lot of what we 'know' about Old English religion is inferred from what we know about the Norse beliefs#why is that? because the english celebrated christmas well before the norse did.#loki series
