Entry 1 from the Diary of Holly Joestar

My Granpa is a cold man. His hands feel like ice, and they make me wanna shiver when he holds me but I don’t because he almost never holds me. I wish he did more. Papa jokes that he doesn’t know how to smile, and even though he didn’t sound like it he said he was joking after Mama glared at him. I’ve seen him smile, though. He smiles at Nonno and it’s small, but when Nonno makes him laugh I see his curvy sharp teeth which look like mine but bigger. Nonno isn’t like Granpa. He’s warm and he holds me all the time and he’s silly and nice and does funny faces for me. He’s not like Granpa at all, but they kiss all the time and Mama says they’re in love. I asked him about Granpa once. He chuckled, which made me confused cuz I wasn’t trying to be funny, but then he smiled at me but looked kinda sad too. “Your cōl-li is a very strange man. His feet are always cold, and what’s worse, he loves pressing them against me when we’re in bed PURELY to make me yelp,” he snickered and tickled my sides so I would also laugh. “I know it seems sometimes like he doesn’t care, but the truth is he doesn’t like other people to know when he’s sad. He’s silly that way, and that’s why he has me—so I can tell him he’s being an idiot and kiss him until he stops. Like this!” And then Nonno kissed my face all over like mwah mwah mwah mwah mwah and it was embarasing but it still made me laugh so hard I felt a little sick.

I wish I could make Granpa laugh like Nonno does. When I make art at school I bring it home and show it to Mama and Papas and sometimes Uncle Bob and Granny Erina, but Granpa and Nonno travel a lot so they’re not here a lot. I did showed them once though. Miss Bonnie told us to draw our families on a tree, so I drew everyone, even Uncle Sanna and Uncle Smokey. Miss Bonnie asked me why Granpa was frowning in my drawing and she said that he should be smiling like everyone else, but I told her my Granpa doesn’t smile. She said “oh” and didn’t say anything else, so I guess it was ok. When I showed it to Nonno he smiled really big and said that I drew Granpa perfectly. I got excited when he said that, cuz I thought maybe if Nonno thought it was so good, maybe Granpa would also think it was good, and he would laugh and show his curvy sharp teeth like mine but bigger. I took it to him and I showed him how I drew him with purple crayon with long hair and a pointy horn (I forgot he had 3 horns not 1 when I was drawing him) and frowning cuz he’s always frowning. He didn’t laugh. He looked at it for a long long time, and then at me for a long long time, and then he said it was “adequate.” I don’t know what that means.
