Yellowstone National Park - the mother of all national parks

Yellowstone National Park was established on 1st March 1872 - and is the oldest national park on this planet. The idea was to conserve the natural beauty of the area to descendant generations. For me, this national park was the absolute highlight of my first trip to the USA.

When you enter a national park in the USA you are usually given a map - or even a park newspaper. I read three very interesting things in the Yellowstone park newspaper which gave me goosebumps, respectively let me smile inside:

Wolves were reintroduced to the park the year before.

Bisons may look sluggish, but they can run twice as fast as humans. By the way, the same also applies to bears.

Use bear-proof trash cans at campsites to avoid attracting bears looking for food.

At the moment reading the last point I remembered the story of a work colleague who knew a couple who had an encounter with a bear one night and then preferred to sleep in the car instead of in the tent afterwards. When I pitched my tent, there was a bison lying in the grass barely 50 meters away - and I couldn't help but thinking that they could run twice as fast as me. One night I could even hear the snorting of a bison trotting around my tent. I was so fascinated by these wild animals that I spent half a day watching them graze in the beautiful Hayden Valley.

Strolling through Yellowstone park means strolling on a giant volcano - who is sleeping, but still active. You can see signs of its activity all over the park. Canyons, waterfalls, azure-blue creeks and lakes, lush and green meadows, geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pots and encounters with wild animals make this park a very special experience.

Der Yellowstone-Nationalpark wurde am 1. März 1872 gegründet – und ist der älteste Nationalpark auf diesem Planeten. Die Idee war, die natürliche Schönheit der Gegend für nachkommende Generationen zu bewahren. Für mich war dieser Nationalpark das absolute Highlight meiner ersten USA-Reise.

Wenn man in den USA einen Nationalpark betritt, erhält man meist eine Karte – oder sogar eine Parkzeitung. Ich habe in der Zeitung des Yellowstone-Parks drei sehr interessante Dinge gelesen, die mir Gänsehaut bereiteten bzw. mich innerlich lächeln ließen:

Wölfe wurden im Jahr zuvor wieder im Park angesiedelt.

Bisons sehen zwar träge aus, können aber doppelt so schnell wie Menschen rennen. Dasselbe gilt übrigens auch für Bären.

Nutze bärensichere Mülleimer auf den Campingplätzen, um nicht Bären auf der Suche nach Nahrung anzulocken.

Als ich den letzten Punkt las, fiel mir die Geschichte eines Arbeitskollegen ein, der ein Paar kannte, das eines Nachts eine Begegnung mit einem Bären hatte und danach lieber im Auto statt im Zelt schlief. Als ich mein Zelt aufschlug, lag kaum 50 Meter entfernt ein Bison im Gras – und ich kam nicht umhin zu denken, dass sie doppelt so schnell wie ich rennen können. Eines Nachts konnte ich sogar das Schnauben eines Bisons hören, der um mein Zelt herumtrottete. Ich war so fasziniert von diesen wilden Tieren, dass ich einen halben Tag damit verbrachte, ihnen beim Grasen im wunderschönen Hayden Valley zuzusehen.

Das Spazieren durch den Yellowstone-Park bedeutet, auf einem riesigen Vulkan zu wandeln – der zwar schläft, aber immer noch aktiv ist. Überall im Park sind Anzeichen dafür zu sehen. Canyons, Wasserfälle, azurblaue Bäche und Seen, üppige und grüne Wiesen, Geysire, heiße Quellen, sprudelnde Schlammtöpfe und Begegnungen mit wilden Tieren machen diesen Park zu einem ganz besonderen Erlebnis.
