geats x revice battle royale movie rewatch
this is actually my first time watching the movie after watching revice, and also ive watched some ryuki, so i finally have the context necessary to know wtf is going on
wait fuck i forgot about this part. ikki what happened (squid games!!)
aw this is actually a really nice epilogue for revice. wait its the start of the movie. uh oh
you guys really had another kid?!?!??!!?
oh yeah lets recap all this for new audience members
using my demon to cheat at table tennis
oh right he doesnt remember vice
a bug! bugtech activate
george is trying to de-age hiromi? using insulated tubes and rgb lights???
man look at all the dirt and sand on lovekov that sucks
i did miss this cast tho everyone here is awesome
nobody protected the baby omg
dont worry everyone hiromi is here and he has a gun and the main rider can still transform
lets everyone do our huge endgame transformations on this beach
i actually adore these cosmic monsters, baridelo and ???
using my bug attack on coughing baby and adult man
coughing baby is winning rn
oh my god theyre all about to die what the fuck
his new denim jacket all ripped up!
nooo not the foam cliffface
ikki's actor is really good at playing dead
there are so many people here in the icu you guys should probably clear out a little so the doctors can work
well at least george can compartmentalize and state facts for everyone
the fire flashback lobby is still really cool
interesting that the aliens want gifu's dna to get really strong despite that he was apparently the one who destroyed their civilization??? are we gonna learn more about that??? (LOL NO)
oh fuck everyone line up for a walk-out
you really get the full range of driver variation in revice with this shot. everyone in this shot has a completely different driver.
tamaki hardcore fourth-wheeling this scene
more huge loud transformations oh my god this is insanity
send these bugs on a baby quest
"this is the entrance to death" yeah but i also think it's the quarry
this flame staff i am definitely stealing thank youuu
i love sakura so much shes the best
dude heaven or hell make your choice
Tumblr media
sorry but live really looks like brave knight
oh thank god he switched
kind of a gay style double finisher
they stamped that baby!
how does a baby already have a demon OHHHH the orginal sin is CANON IN REVICE
woahh hes bisexual did anybody know
this really is a touching reunion now that i know what happened to them
yikes. you have run out of room to run! hope nothing happens badassly to stop your imminent doom
he has a new jacket from coming back from the dead. black on the outside red on the inside bc of his devil power
YAYYYY VICE IS BACKK
you know what it makes sense that ikki and ace are back to back bc in the end theyre both obsessed with solving every problem on their own. the difference is, ikki learns his lesson
YAY THE HANDSHAKE ugh its such a good suit
you guys should probably take the baby somewhere else and stop all standing there waiting to get hit with a rogue fireball
time to jump up really high in the air and do a badass magnet finisher
vice can see the cameras (framed as evidence for my theory that these riders both take place in the same universe)
?????? what the hell baby in the backpack is a dgp endeavor??
dgp clues!
girori: someone else is also filming in this spatial network....
ok if i may theorize, i figure the case is such that the dgp came back to this time to film bc ace is there (child of their godedss) but during the time theyre there the revice plot also takes place. the thing is, ace didn't really notice between his dgp involvment and the fact that he just never really checked the news during that time. plus i think the dgp probably got in on shooting that show as well (bonus content) and vice can see the cameras for whatever reason thus his whole charade during revice.
well anyways. an attractive man in a smoky underground training room being manipulated by an old man. classic.
THE BOARD GAME CAFEEEEE HELPPPPP the fact that ace wearing a regular white tshirt is a costume on him bc of his nature is so funny. he looks like fucking papyrus
also pope keiwa and witch neon
AND MICHINAGA IS ALIVE AGAIN YUPEE
HES WEARING A COSTUME TOOO
TSUMURIS OUTFIT
when you place this on the geats timeline is actually crazy. girori should be dead. michinaga should also be dead.
YOU NEED TO DELIVER A BABY. IN 42 KM
neon: this baby is gonna steal my clout...
michinaga has his cdl guys dont worry
I FORGOT REN IS THERE JUST HANGING OUT ON A BIKE WITH A BAD HAIRCUT
no one is good at protecting this baby be glad its just the devil aspect and it can survive
the geats buckles are actually weaker overall than revice bc theyre only at the midway point of their series
kagerou and keiwa interaction
kagerou: HEY wait a second theres an interesting devil around here lemme touch your forehead
kagerou: oh my god youre a girl. thats not wahat i was expecting. you should look into that.
you guys are gonna wanna run
evil ryuki?? but different???
yikes!
goth tsumuri is axctually so awesome
AND GOTH GEORGE hired by the game master to do commentary. hes literally a foppish dandy
these guys are not good with babies
fever trio yippee
the geats cast is overall weaker but they /are/ smarter bc they spend all their time deciphering clues and tricks instead of living a happy life
boing? boing?
this is really awkward bc ace and ikki know each other
the chase scene in the alley is so awesome, i love nago knocking shit over and jeanne trying to fix it
"bulls cant run" ??? what are you talking about
pulling his tail is low tho
oh hey i just got revived too LOL
OUJA IS HERE
oh george wants ouja baddddddly
vice is a great hypeman
buffa v ouja is badass
"im not like you" god i hope so. i hope buffa has what it takes to not be ouja
buffa semi-defeating ouja first try is crazy
fuck the cobra is way way scarier in hd. put that thing back in salvaged 2002 graphics or so help me
damn. retired.
oh this isnt greenscreened at all nuh nuh
honestly i agree. geats needs to chill
revice might be strong but geats has bugs bunny powers and in this world that trumps devils
geats: if youre a human, show me your face
ikki: ok (shows his face)
geats: (ohhhhh my god this is that guy i hooked up with a couple times like eight months ago and then ghosted fuckkkkkkkk) uhhhh fancy seeing you here
fuck i love nago so much shes the best. that mannequin hiding spot is so good.
neon and sakura compete for who can make the most women like them
its very yuri manga "this demon chasing me... was actually a cute strong girl?"
ace: i wondered why were delivering a baby that is clearly in someone else's art style
aww neon is a happy spa fan
AH knight jumpscare. i actually love that thats the matchup
woah right into a finisher! unfortunately its not enough
this is honestly a fucked situation all around
ace: i know this is your brother's devil but i HAVE to deliver this baby. you can have him back later
why did you guys go in the sushi shop? AND DONT THROW THE BABY
the magnum shield is cool how come we never see that again
come on not the stupid tilt scooters
who are these women at the finish line? who employs them?? whats their stories????
im really curious to see how many GMs the dgp actually went through before girori
not the top hat for the blood and gore extravaganza
the laser knife?????
can we stop mind controlling women
"a world without the DGP" come on man we all wish for that youre making that seem like a bad thing to wish for. literally marvel movie optics
the Desire Royale logo is badass
this guy is hot too bad we have to kill him
this is the debut of powered builder!!!!
kamen rider seeker
"an undefeated desashin from my DGP" - ok now lets unpack that. was it a different era? and this seeker guy got time-traveled to the current day to beat geats' dgp?? but he's from this era???? so girori must have just started before geats showed up
the powered builder buckle is objectively the best one its just the best ever its so fucking awesome i love it so much lets have it forever yayyyy
DUDE HE ABSORBED THAT BABY
this buckle really should become a nago form if anyone had any sense at all. ugh its so fucking cool
nice ticket throw. cool portal too
they blew the entire geats budget on menswear
kaima: im just a guy from the future or the past
ace's little phone case with the ring handle. awesome
oh kaima was an mma fighter from before ace joined the game. so the gm change to girori was recent
my spiderphone key
this is a revice location! inside the dgp facility! how odd
hes not gonna fucking tell you anything. you fucking saved him before he told you. idiot.
no violence in this lounge! says the guy responsible for violence within that lounge
ace's jaw twitch when girori said "im on your side"
oh no vice is fading away :(
ace stop staring and fucking blink
oh good thing that works i guess. i guess they can just use desire drivers i guess. but wait HOW DOES GIRORI KNOW THAT????
why does ace have those spare buckles too
hiiii everyoneeeee
they made ouja put a tank top on... (cover them up slut...)(no im sure the real reason is that they filmed this in the cold)
holy shit evil!shinji and ren are barely recognizable with different haircuts. and why are they all evil
"wish youd stay dead for once" is really good
hey thats not your line!!! thats buffas line!
ace and ikki are there too like ummm guys what the fuck is wrong with you all
im glad we get to do this in a sports stadium so its contained
seeker has to have his own side to the transformation bc of how big it is. and the ryuki folks get magic popup mirrors
they picked three insane people and three crazy people and one guy whose both to build megastructures
hes not your son anymore?????? wtf???
if youre the gm you have to have a little capelet
put that display katana down
dude just throw your hat on the floor. lets destroy this guys office
and were back in the fucking warehouse again
"i guess there are people that are just like devils" is certainly something you can say about ouja
lets all win really quick
dude lets fight in the gardennn
THE TINY GUNNNNN
we're inviting one million aliens to your house for a survival horror game
dude girori you have no room to say anything about that
cut in half but there was no blood so its ok
girori Can fight thats why the producer snapped him out of existence instead of challenging him or letting him fight anymore
yuppp editing game parameters with my awesome beam
george: my outfit... :(
hey is anyone worried about the impending megastructure
well at least everyone is back in the game
tsumuri: hey listen. desashin prize to whoever stops seeker from killing all of us
propeller buckle for revi
why did they transform and then turn around?
dude thats so not where that was. awesome
"the more i win, the more others suffer" is a clue!
ACE HISTORY FACT COUNTER; 8! the great shakespeare once said, "when we are born we cry that we are come to this great stage of fools."
no one is impressed. everyone is confused
just me and my bigass stairs
tycoon and buffa both give BAD morals to be fighting for
why did me and george both say "that's kamen rider ryuki!"
now knight and ouja get to fight, big day for gay people
nice ryuki finisher
yup lets get this finale music in here. medleyed with the orchestral march to show villainy. fuck yes
fuck that finisher is sooo fucking cool too bad this guy is mega evil
the claw arms with tools just hitting him over and over is awesome
geats: my mom doesnt like you so you cant win
revice buckle exists now
lets get a clean stamping finish to the geats soundtrack
YES MAGNUM BOOST GRAND VICTORY
you just cant get a kick like this anywhere else folks. and with those glowing eyes? how could the death gate even exist?
recognizing the ryuki time's-up clue is good
welp bye everyone
tycoon knows damn well theyre not powerscaled properly relative to other riders.
their suits are inconsistent as fuck compared to the far more structured revice and ryuki. which is interesting
ace: youre not allowed to fight without morals in this world, ok? i gotta be honest. im hallucinating a lot right now.
damn devils are excluded from the dgp thats fucked.
ikki: well my first wish would be to fix everything but you guys have that taken care of
ace: ill handle it. since youre so fucking complicated
bring in the clock bell babeyyy
very "i would love you FIVE ever" response from ikki
daiji: hey awesome that you finally remember vice, but i promised george i would bring him a desire driver sooo
ikki: no those arent ours we arent supposed to have them
^offscreen convo that i imagine took place before the sushi restaurant scene where ikki gives them back
ace: dont ever think that im attached to anything ever (literally wished for ikki's happiness)
i love that they get along honestly its good to see
oh hey now shinji needs to deliver keiwa a moral. having watched the first half of ryuki that actually makes a lot of sense
ren coming up to bully shinji, "i wouldnt have had to play that weird game if you hadnt gotten yourself stuck in the mirror world" lmao
oh this part is ryuki spoilers i must forget this. theyre gay as fuck tho
neon and sakura hanging out!
ace and co back at the game cafe wearing the same outfits??? his stupid papyrus outfit? and theyre all clowning on him for acting like a lone wolf??
michinaga hovering in the back in a random outfit and disappearing????? they literally made an ai projection of him this is what people were striking against.
the source of ace's overwhelming strength is that he's not from this era???? what does that mean?? i still dont get it. i still dont know how that makes him stronger. old clues but how
the producer just has a desk FULL of antique stim toys

january reading
why does january always feel like it’s 3 months long. anyway here’s what i read in january, feat. poison experts with ocd, ants in your brain, old bolsheviks getting purged, and mountweazels.
city of lies, sam hawke (poison wars #1) this is a perfectly nice fantasy novel about jovan, who serves as essentially a secret guard against poisoning for his city state’s heir and is forced to step up when his uncle (also a secret poison guard) and the ruler are both killed by an unknown poison AND also the city is suddenly under a very creepy siege (are these events related? who knows!) this is all very fine & entertaining & there are some fun ideas, but also... the main character has ocd and SAME HAT SAME HAT. also like the idea of having a very important, secret and potentially fatal job that requires you to painstakingly test everything the ruler/heir is consuming WHILE HAVING OCD is like... such a deliciously sadistic concept. amazing. 3/5
my heart hemmed in, marie ndiaye (translated from french by jordan stump) a strange horror-ish tale in which two married teachers, bastions of upper-middle-class respectability and taste, suddenly find themselves utterly despised by everyone around them, escalating until the husband is seriously injured. through several very unexpected twists, it becomes clear that the couple’s own contempt for anyone not fitting into their world and especially nadia’s hostility and shame about her (implied to be northern african) ancestry is the reason for their pariah status. disturbing, surprising, FUCKED UP IF TRUE (looking back, i no longer really know what i mean by that). 4/5
xenogenesis trilogy (dawn/adulthood rites/imago), octavia e. butler octavia butler is incapable of writing anything uninteresting and while i don’t always completely vibe with her stuff, it’s always fascinating & thought-provoking. this series combines some of her favourite topics (genetic manipulation, alien/human reproduction, what is humanity) into a tale of an alien species, the oankali, saving some human survivors from the apocalypse and beginning a gene-trading project with them, integrating them into their reproductive system and creating mixed/’construct’ generations with traits from both species. and like, to me, this was uncomfortably into the biology = destiny thing & didn’t really question the oankali assertion that humans were genetically doomed to hierarchical behaviour & aggression (& also weirdly straight for a book about an alien species with 3 genders that engages in 5-partner-reproduction with humans), so that angle fell flat for me for the most part, altho i suppose i do agree that embracing change, even change that comes at a cost, is better than clinging to an unsustainable (& potentially destructive) purity. where i think the series is most interesting is in its exploration of consent and in how far consent is possible in extremely one-sided power dynamics (curiously, while the oankali condemn and seem to lack the human drive for hierarchy, they find it very easy to abuse their position of power & violate boundaries & never question the morality of this. in this, the first book, focusing on a human survivor first encountering the oankali and learning of their project, is the most interesting, as lilith as a human most explicitly struggles with her position - would her consent be meaningful? can she even consent when there is a kind of biochemical dependence between humans and their alien mates? the other two books, told from the perspectives of lilith’s constructed/mixed children, continue discussing themes of consent, autonomy and power dynamics, but i found them less interesting the further they moved from human perspectives. on the whole: 2.5/5
love & other thought experiments, sophie ward man, we love a pierre menard reference. anyway. this is a novel in stories, each based (loosely) on a thought experiment, about (loosely) a lesbian couple and their son arthur, illness and grief, parenthood, love, consciousness and perception, alternative universes, and having an ant in your brain. it is thoroughly delightful & clever, but goes for warmth and humanity (or ant-ity) over intellectual games (surprising given that it is all about thought experiments - but while they are a nice structuring device i don’t think they add all that much). i haven’t entirely worked out my feelings about the ending and it’s hard to discuss anyway given the twists and turns this takes, but it's a whole lot of fun. 4/5
a general theory of oblivion, josé eduardo agualusa (tr. from portuguese by daniel hahn) interesting little novel(la) set in angola during and after the struggle for independence, in which a portuguese woman, ludo, with extreme agoraphobia walls herself into her apartment to avoid the violence and chaos (but also just... bc she has agoraphobia) with a involving a bunch of much more active characters and how they are connected to her to various degrees. i didn’t like the sideplot quite as much as ludo’s isolation in her walled-in flat with her dog, catching pigeons on the balcony and writing on the walls. 3/5
cassandra at the wedding, dorothy baker phd student cassandra returns home attend (sabotage) her twin sister judith’s wedding to a young doctor whose name she refuses to remember, believing that her sister secretly wants out. cass is a mess, and as a shift to judith’s perspective reveals, definitely wrong about what judith wants and maybe a little delusional, but also a ridiculously compelling narrator, the brilliant but troubled contrast to judith’s safer conventionality. on the whole, cassandra’s narrative voice is the strongest feature of a book i otherwise found a bit slow & a bit heavy on the quirky family. fav line is when cass, post-character-development, plans to “take a quick look at [her] dumb thesis and see if it might lead to something less smooth and more revolting, or at least satisfying more than the requirements of the University”. 3/5
the office of historical corrections, danielle evans a very solid collection of realist short stories (+ the titular novella), mainly dealing with racism, (black) womanhood, relationships between women, and anticolonial/antiracist historiography. while i thought all the stories were well-done and none stood out as weak or an unnecessary inclusion, there also weren’t any that really stood out to me. 3/5
sonnenfinsternis, arthur koestler (english title: darkness at noon) (audio) you know what’s cool about this book? when i added it to my goodreads tbr in 2012, i would have had to read it in translation as the german original was lost during koestler’s escape from the nazis, but since then, the original has been rediscovered and republished. yet another proof that leaving books on your tbr for ages is a good thing actually. anyway. this is a story about the stalinist purges, told thru old bolshevik rubashov, who, after serving the Party loyally for years & doing his fair share of selling people out for the Party, is arrested for ~oppositional activities. in jail and during his interrogations, rubashov reflects on the course the Party has taken and his own part (and guilt) in that, and the way totalitarianism has eaten up and poisoned even the most commendable ideals the Party once held (and still holds?), the course of history and at what point the end no longer justifies the means. it’s brilliant, rubashov is brilliant and despicable, i’m very happy it was rediscovered. 5/5
heads of the colored people, nafissa thompson-spires another really solid short story collection, also focused on the experiences of black people in america (particularly the black upper-middle class), black womanhood and black relationships, altho with a somewhat more satirical tone than danielle evans’s collection. standouts for me were the story in letters between the mothers of the only black girls at a private school, a story about a family of fruitarians, and a story about a girl who fetishises her disabled boyfriend(s). 3.5/5
pedro páramo, juan rulfo (gernan transl. by dagmar ploetz) mexican classic about a rich and abusive landowner (the titular pedro paramo) and the ghost town he leaves behind - quite literally, as, when his son tries to find his father, the town is full of people, quite ready to talk shit about pedro, but they are all dead. it’s an interesting setting with occasionally vivid writing, but the skips in time and character were kind of confusing and i lost my place a lot. i’d be interested in reading rulfo’s other major work, el llano en llamas. 2.5/5
verse für zeitgenossen, mascha kaléko short collection of the poems kaléko, a jewish german poet, wrote while in exile in the united states in the 30-40s, as well as some poems written after the end of ww2. kaléko’s voice is witty, but at turns also melancholy or satirical. as expected i preferred the pieces that directly addressed the experience of exile (”sozusagen ein mailied” is one of my favourite exillyrik pieces). 3/5
the harpy, megan hunter yeah this was boooooooring. the cover is really cool & the premise sounded intriguing (women gets cheated on, makes deal with husband that she is allowed to hurt him three times in revenge, women is also obsessed with harpies: female revenge & female monsters is my jam) but it’s literally so dull & trying so hard to be deep. 1.5/5
the liar’s dictionary, eley williams this is such a delightful book, from the design (those marbled endpapers? yes) to the preface (all about what a dictionary is/could be), to the chapter headings (A-Z words, mostly relating to lies, dishonesty, etc in some way or another, containing at least one fictitious entry), to the dual plots (intern at new edition of a dictionary in contemporary england checking the incomplete old dictionary for mountweazels vs 1899 london with the guy putting the mountweazels in), to williams’s clear joy about words and playing with them. there were so many lines that made me think about how to translate them, which is always a fun exercise. 3.5/5
catherine the great & the small, olja knežević (tr. from montenegrin by ellen elias-bursać, paula gordon) coming-of-age-ish novel about katarina from montenegro, who grows up in  titograd/podgorica and belgrad in the 70s/80s, eventually moving to london as an adult. to be honest while there are some interesting aspects in how this portrays yugoslavia and conflicts between the different parts of yugoslavia, i mostly found this a pretty sloggy slog of misery without much to emotionally connect to, which is sad bc i was p excited for it :(. 2/5
the decameron project: 29 new stories from the pandemic, anthology a collection of short stories written during covid lockdown (and mostly about covid/lockdown in some way). they got a bunch of cool authors, including margaret atwood, edwidge danticat, rachel kushner ... it’s an interesting project and the stories are mostly pretty good, but there wasn’t one that really stood out to me as amazing. i also kinda wish more of the stories had diverged more from covid/lockdown thematically bc it got a lil repetitive tbh. 2/5

Hi Room, What do you think about the finale? Any theorys about why Katarina did that to Red? And what do you think about the Stranger? Thanks!
To me, the finale in general felt okay, which is strangely comforting bc it wasn’t bad. I’m good with an “okay”. “okay” is an improvement (like I still feel TBL is trying while – to use a concurrent example – GOT gave up on itself and its fans spectacularly). There are individual moments that are more than okay to me (DEMBE, the team work, esp Liz & Red, esp esp Liz taking charge and that tiny moment of synchronized tea drinking) and others are less than (e.g. the conclusion to the conspiracy plot is kinda… ?!), but overall I like how S6 played out and my excitement for (lucky number) 7 is intact. Things are in motion and interesting again, and I finally gave myself permission to do a proper, full-scale re-watch during the summer, maybe attempt to chart the timeline, too, which is sth I never expected to consider doing again. I’m even gonna read the comics. In short, this season pulled me back in the Zone.
the rest is behind a cut due to length – @ mobile app users, apologies as always

Red’s identity, Dom’s story, and Liz’s side of these things
The Stranger: Masha was bound to figure out you aren’t who you say you are. What I can’t figure out is Dom. Why would he tell her all that?Red: In an attempt to help her move on.The Stranger: And she believed him?Red: She did. So much so that she‘s decided it’s safe to bring her daughter home. The Stranger: I know Dom meant well. He shouldn’t have told her that story.
So… having seen this scene, I def have more doubts than before, anon, but I still believe that the gist of the Rassvet story (including Red == Ilya) is true. This is (imo) why Red tells Dom “I know the broad strokes, I know who I am, but I need to hear the details you used to sugarcoat the ugly truth to make it look like a fairytale”, i.e. something that Liz has a tendency to swallow (see changed man!Tim or every paternity test they show her), something she was eager to embrace here, too, despite the obvious holes bc – as she told Ressler – “it is sweet and safe, so I’m gonna overlook things that don’t add up and hope it doesn’t come crashing down on me this time”. But it does. Every time.
Whether we like it or not, this is a consistent trait in Liz, this willingness to settle for a sweet, simple story over the messy, complicated truth even when she has misgivings (see her going at Red in 219, “It wouldn’t kill you to lie just once to make someone feel good.”). She’s not stupid, she’s just scared and unsure, imo (and so is Red but, unfortunately for Liz, being pathologically secretive is still what soothes him). But when there is no sweet story available to make Liz feel good/safe or it’s no longer sustainable, that’s when she grows restless/angry and goes on the offensive until she feels safe again. She did this w/ Tim and then w/ Red, too (she literally locked both of them up to gain control), and both times we can eventually hear her say “I was scared of you but not anymore”, and both times she expresses love for a safe & sweet idea and not the full reality of these men who cannot live up to that idea, so the cycle starts up again (well, not w/ Tim as he is now dead but Red is still in the running.)
It doesn’t really matter if the answer she gets is incomplete or untrue. As long as she can make herself swallow it, as long as it brings a sense of security, she will go for it. Tim played along w/ this and that fantasy bubble collapsed every time. Red never did and never will indulge her w/ sweet delusions but by doing so, he also reduces their “feelgood” time together. He hides behind her father’s identity but for her, he breaks cover repeatedly, which to me further signals that he doesn’t wish to take on the roles associated w/ this identity in her life, which clearly clashes w/ her park bench claim of “this is who you will always be to me”. And given Liz’s track record w/ these self-soothing declarations, I think we will once again see her being contradicted.
Having heard of what’s happened btw her and Red, I think Dom decided to tailor the truth to give them a quick-fix. His story brought a sense of safety/certainty that Liz craves – sth Red refused to offer when he told her he had a secret and he had to keep it and refused to give her any embellished feel-good alternative. But now he is on edge bc some of his secrets have been spilled and it was done in a way that maximizes his discomfort (by making him look like a hero when he considers himself anything but, and, ultimately, by undermining his control over his own “narrative” around Liz). I believe this is part of the reason why he tells Dom that he likely made everything worse by telling her that story.
I hope next season they will be pushed to face more of the actual truth together – in all its ugly, messy glory – about what exactly happened and, more importantly, why. Because we still don’t know much of that. Dom only offered a taste but now Katarina is back to mix some sour to the sweet (I am hungry as I am typing this, can you tell ;)
Tumblr media
The Stranger: well, we barely have anything to go on here but what we have is already intriguing, i.e. he grew up w/ Red, he seems to know Dom and Katarina personally, he seems to have some serious tradecraft background + connections, and he is among the v few who is trusted w/ Red’s secrets, so he is inner inner circle for sure (and he’s played by Brett Cullen, so… yes please). I still think the childhood pledge from the Rassvet story is an element of truth (it just fits our Red way too much + I see it reflected in “Cape May”), so I think these 3 (the Stranger, Red, and Kat) were likely childhood friends and they all picked similar career paths (or it was picked for them), so the Stranger is likely Russian, too.
Katarina continues to puzzle me to no end, I freely admit. And I am enjoying it (for now anyway). The finale offered some really interesting details here, imo, and I think Red’s 2nd meeting w/ the Stranger is the most revealing.
Red tasked his mysterious friend to locate Katarina bc Ressler’s dig for his real identity triggered an active search for her, too. The Stranger finds her and hands Red a picture saying, “It’s her. I’m telling you, Raymond. Paper trails. The passports. The travel. It’s her.” What we can immediately conclude here is that they didn’t even know what Kat looks like now since it’s not the picture the Stranger used to identify her but her signature methods/movements (knowledge of this implies a close working relationship in the past at the v least). And since he doesn’t hand Red the pic to ask him to confirm it’s her but to show him what she looks like now, we can also conclude that Red had no idea what she looks like now, either, which means that he hasn’t seen her for almost 3 decades and, apparently, he would have been fine w/ maintaining this arrangement if it hadn’t been for the security risk Ressler’s digging exposed them to.
This conclusion lines up nicely w/ two (imo very important) things established in previous episodes:
Red’s hallucinations at Cape May – he sees Kat the way she looked in 1991/92. His mind couldn’t conjure her present image bc his last memories of her are almost 30 years old. This in turn implies that the Hobson’s choice event took place around this time, as well, and that was the last time he saw her. It was the last time Dom saw her, too, if what he tells Liz in “Rassvet” – that it was 28 years ago – is true.
Katarina being dead – whatever happened to Kat, her own father considers her as good as dead now. So does Red and Dom blames him for this loss, going as far as saying he killed her.
Dom: These boxes are all I have left of my daughter.
Red: If Katarina were standing here instead of me, if it were she asking you, what would you tell her?Dom: It doesn’t matter because she is not here and she’s not asking.Red: But if you could tell her–Dom: I can’t!
Dom (to Liz): If my Katarina was still here, she would have let me know. [… her mother sent a letter hoping it] would find her alive. I picked it up because I knew it never would.”
Liz: You said the name Masha Rostova had been lost to history until the manhunt. Now it’s out there and someone’s looking for me. It’s my mother.Red: Lizzie, your mother is dead.
Her mother was dying, Kat never showed. Her daughter was being hunted and it was televised globally – Kat never showed. And clearly neither Dom nor Red expected her to as they both seem to consider Katarina dead despite being aware that she is still out there somewhere. Moreover, they both believe that Liz is better off thinking her mother is dead than knowing whatever the truth is (so it cannot be too good). Add to this Red’s latest remark to Liz – “your mother can’t hurt you” – and things truly get weird and interesting. Was Kat subjected to some special session w/ Krilov, too, that somehow “extinguished” parts of her, practically rendering her old self “gone”? This would be my current best guess (just a shot in the dark, really) and I know it’s crude sci-fi territory but this is TBL we’re talking about.
Whatever happened to Kat, Red was involved in it, and we have several remarks to back this up:
“All the money, all the time and effort, all the favors in the world cannot possibly equal what you took away from her.” (Red, 216)
“There was a woman and her child. Both were doomed. Both would die. I could either save one or lose both. I chose the child. It was the worst thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.” (Red, 319)
“I’m not sure Elizabeth will ever be ready to learn what you did to Katarina.” (Dembe, 422)
“[Katarina] is gone because of choices you made.” (Dom, 320)
In “Cape May”, Red hallucinated forgiveness/absolution from Katarina but we don’t know if this is how she actually felt. It could have been just Red trying to make himself feel better about doing what he felt to be necessary. Katarina in the present doesn’t seem to be in a forgiving mood, tho. She clearly expected to be contacted and she clearly considered Red’s presence a threat.
Tumblr media
Red: If Moscow is looking for Katarina, if Agent Ressler’s inquiry has reignited their search…The Stranger: Then I know that could be bad.Red: I want this done before Masha’s daughter comes home.
So… your guess is as good as mine here, anon. All we have for now is a whole lot of vaguing and very little concrete info. I agree, it feels there’s sth more to this but there’s just so little to go on, it could be almost anything. What we can conclude is that the Stranger and Red (and Dom) have stayed away from Katarina for almost 30 years and if it hadn’t been for Moscow’s freshly reignited interest in finding her, this complete lack of contact would have remained. They didn’t even keep direct tabs on her since they had no idea what she looked like or where exactly she was or that she was a threat to Red (otherwise he would have approached her differently, imo).
They clearly do not want Kat to be found – the precise “why” remains to be seen. Red’s first words to her are a warning – “it’s not safe” –, and I think he truly went there to make sure she wouldn’t be scooped up. That was his immediate objective. If she were found, the consequences would reach Liz and Agnes, and heading that threat off is what ultimately motivates Red here (→ “I want this done before Masha’s daughter comes home.”). He didn’t look too enthusiastic to make contact. He didn’t want to, he had to.  And he didn’t tell Liz, which suggests that he wants this separation to remain, which suggests that something is up w/ Katarina that goes beyond the usual “you can’t be in her life bc it’s dangerous” reason. Dom stayed out of Liz’s life, too, for safety reasons yet Red told him to find Liz if anything happened to him. That doesn’t seem to be the case w/ Kat at all. Red himself stayed away from her yet he went to find Dom after Liz “death” and returned several times after that for advice or simply for his company.
The meeting w/ Kat wasn’t a social call and it did not feel like a romantic reunion, either. Red just looked sad and tense to me. And he clearly did not expect to be stabbed, so I don’t think that bit was part of any planned performance. Why he received that treatment is another good question. Kat has clearly come into the possession of some new info that compelled her to go on the offensive. It could be related to their past and that vague remark about what Red did to her OR it is about something more recent that Red wasn’t aware she was aware of?? Right now this moment feels like a convergence of two separate threads: Red came to warn her based on “undisclosed plot point A” and Katarina reacted to him based on “undisclosed plot point B”.
Tumblr media
Oh, I love this song, anon. Antis can keep pointing at that awkward kiss (that he doesn’t even initiate, she keeps pushing her face into his) as evidence of some ~epic romance~ all they want, but once again they fail (and/or refuse) to see things in context and “Cape May” was already pretty clear wrt Red’s feelings, I agree. and the finale lines up w/ it, too, which is nice.
Red hasn’t seen her in 30 years yet he only decided to contact Kat bc her looming exposure threatened Liz and Agnes, and when he is shown a picture of her, this is his reaction:
Tumblr media
Not exactly what I’d expect from a dude in love (even if it were unrequited). He had a way more emotional reaction to Dembe’s return and he only left like a week ago. This is more like how you react when someone shows you photographic evidence of Bigfoot chilling in their hot tub w/ a beer. And now we know Red knew all along that Katarina was alive, so him “designating” Liz as the woman he loves and confessing (several times both to her and others) that without her he has nothing to live for and saying her name as his last word speak volumes already. So if they wanted to sell Red/Kat, they have already undercut themselves on multiple fronts here by giving literally all the romance tropes to Red/Liz. But I don’t believe they are selling R/K, it’s just another smoke screen + Kat is part of a past both Red and Liz have to settle for the sake of their future. And settling the past is always easier and more fruitful to do w/ a living human than w/ a ghost or a hallucination.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I think it’s there to signal that they (Dom and Kat included) go way back and were/are close, like you said. and to indicate shared Russian roots, perhaps. As I said above, I still think Red is Ilya and the Stranger is likely Russian, too, (and so is Dom), so using Liz’s original Russian name makes sense in this context of “Russian togetherness”.
and Red sometimes calls her Masha around Dom, too, bc that’s what Dom calls her bc that’s who she still is to Dom. And I think that’s why Red calls her Elizabeth bc that’s who she is to him, which is a nice little detail further emphasizing that his main/defining connection to her is the present one just as James keeps saying. Or as Red puts it on-screen
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can def see both sides here, anon, and more. Knowing what we know about Red, both are likely among the multiple reasons that underpin his behavior in this scene. Yes, on the one hand, he was pressed for time and wanted that Kat thing done as soon as possible. On the other, he was also kinda closed-off as if he were trying to hold back emotionally as well as physically, which I think flows from 2 main sources: 1) he feels uncomfortable w/ the labels Liz wants to push on him (ever since the pilot he’s been displaying a preference for “partner” and not “father” and he might be reaching his saturation point) and 2) he is still heartbroken and afraid to put himself out there again w/ Liz after three major betrayals in a row. He’s already had a sort of baseline distress due to how emotionally vulnerable he is to Liz at all times, so after this latest heartbreak I think he is just trying to take things slow, leaving space and time for Liz and himself to figure out a mutually acceptable way to fit together.
She’s been using his heart as a knife block to satisfy her own needs and I think it’s making him less and less willing to force himself into slots that feel uncomfortable to him. She just decided that him playing dad and grandad is what suits him but a week ago she thought life in prison suited him the best. I mean… that’s not how you relationship. At all. Relationships are ongoing negotiations where all involved need to consent to their “roles”. It’s not “I hate you now, so I will put you in prison” and then “I love you now, so stay for dinner”. After everything that’s happened, I am not surprised Red is pushing back a little here for the sake of (what’s left of) his own sanity. He is a deeply flawed, problematique human being but he is still a human being and not a toy.
Liz and Agnes are the most important to him and he would never ever force his preferences on them, I completely agree. But that doesn’t mean Liz should be allowed to force her preferences on him esp when those change so often and so drastically bc she clearly doesn’t know what she really wants from him yet. I think this realization is finally truly dawning on this guilt-ridden, lovesick idiot and that’s part of what we see in this scene, esp in that “I don’t wanna intrude” comment that really does feel like a pointed retreat from her abrupt park bench declaration. But of course there is no negotiation w/o talking and that’s what Liz wanted to do before Red shut her down, so…
bottom line (that’s been the same for 6 years): these 2 need to talk.

Why do you think the SW fandom is so knee-deep in SJ Calvinism? Because I understand wanting representation or being upset because a movie didn’t fulfill your expectations, but the “if you don’t ship X you’re racist” “if you don’t stan Y you’re bigoted” and the harassment over a disappointing movie is surprising just because of how pervasive it is. I was trying to find some St*rmpilot blogs to follow and the amount of hate is Yikes, especially the hate for Rose and the stans of a Certain Ship
eeeeeeh I think it’s because ep. 7 came out at the height of the... well, reaping the seeds the social justice calvinism had sown since 2014 so to speak? I mean, SW is hardly the one fandom where it happened (*cough* voltron and SU *cough*) but as SW is way broader in audience than those other shows that certainly didn’t help, but like, if you think on it, since 2013-ish (but I think before as well, I mean, I’ve been here since 2011 and already when I got here I felt like something was going very wrong when it came to politics-in-fandom-attitude), basically people on tumblr have progressively, when it came to fandoms:
pushed the idea that you have to over-analyze everything you consume through political lens;
pushed the idea that what you like and how you like it also has to be pushed through political lens and what you like says things about who you are as a person or your political leanings;
pushed the idea that if you care for something *problematic* just because you like it you’re excusing it;
pushed the idea that if you were problematic once you can’t ever not be problematic, you can’t change your mind and you can’t learn also because ‘it’s not my job to educate you’ so people either learn themselves or idek what but again, calvinism.
now obviously those politics are tumblr-politics which are also US centric like woah and are also high-school petty like woah, and since more or less then people have:
continuously other-ed lgbt people from *straight*/heterosexual people pushing a narrative where straight = bad and therefore putting it before anything automatically makes it a valid insult which added to the above means that if you ship het you’re already problematic regardless of whether you’re straight or not (and if you are.. lol);
pushed the performative feminism of Doom TM that says men and women should be equal but is like, an excuse to shit on men and on women who like men (see the rampant biphobia around and the whole ‘straight girls are so stupid if they’re into men they should try women’ discourse);
pushed the US terminology when it comes to the POC discourse, in the sense that everything works on the US-centered context where white people = white anglosaxon protestant, poc = everything else without realizing that in the rest of the world white does not equal wasp, that poc = black people only in most of europe (and no one who’s actually black or not white who lives in africa or asia and so on would describe themselves as poc because why the hell would you when your skin color/ethinicity is the norm where you live?), which also goes with the whole white passing debate which where I live would not exist but in that context is a mess because again, oscar i*saac is schroedinger’s poc (as in, he’s poc automatically for american standards because he’s latin-american but like he has the same skin tone as my mother and my mother in italy is white same as 90% of us, which means endless confusion) and assumed that all of us have to accept that terminology/context regardless of whether it’s valid in our countries;
kept on progressively putting minorities against each other in an endless loop of WHO HAS IT WORST/oppression olympics;
kept on progressively split hairs on issues that aren’t exactly, like, that important if there’s more urgent stuff to deal with because 90% of the activism here is performative;
made the 180° turn for which headcanons and shit are seen as, like, doing representation instead of, you know, supporting what rep is there never mind when people decide *one* ship is the right one and if another is canonized and it’s rep it gets thoroughly ignored;
pushed on a mindset for which if something isn’t perfect at the get-go then it’s canceled.
and so on.
like, all of that shit has been continuously not criticized because criticizing it especially if you don’t belong to a minority means that you’re out of line/discussing things that don’t concern you, but if you’re a minority and you criticize it then it’s suddenly YOU BETRAYED OUR CAUSE *INSERT SLUR HERE ABOUT PANDERING TO THE MAJORITY*, and the result exploded in toxic af fandoms, but like... if you look at the issues of the SW sequel trilogy fandom it’s all of that in a nutshell because:
k/ylo ren is automatically the worst because he’s white (horrible), a man (even worse), not canonically attractive (I didn’t touch on that topic bc I’m honestly not up for it mentally but lmao that counts too) and presumably heterosexual (or well, no one said he’s not but you know, since he’s a white dude on the bad side [supposedly] then we don’t give him the benefit of the doubt that he might be bi), so if you like ky/lo ren or relate to him you’re automatically problematic;
shipping re/ylo because automatically problematic because it’s a *straight* (evil) ship made of two white people (when there’s options to ship them both with people that aren’t white, so IT’S RACIST), they have an age gap (BAD BECAUSE POWER IMBALANCE) and it’s enemies to lovers, so it’s a context where people who don’t conceive redemption or that people can become better are basically crying problematic all the time, and the fact that people decided it’s *abusive* when it has like nothing that can equate it to a really abusive relationship says all;
ky/lux being the most popular slash ship immediately means that it’s the fault of the horrible straight (white) women fetishizing the (white) men on the dark side (when it’s most likely because for a while ky/lux was literally the only side of that fandom where people were chill/there wasn’t wank every other moment);
st/ormpilot has been declared The Right Ship because it’s two non-white men and it’s not straight which automatically turns into what I said before about hating other ships that would be rep anyway and feeds into the lowkey oppression olympics racism, because like if finn/rose becomes canon it’s still a mixed/biracial ship because he’s black and she’s asian....... except that it’s not the right ship for people who decided that finn has to be either with rey or poe (and guess what rey is white and poe is... schroedinger’s poc because oscar isaac in europe wouldn’t pass for *poc*), which to me has stank of lowkey racism since tlj came out because sorry but if ‘finn deserves better than rose’ or ‘finn should be with rey because if he doesn’t get rey then it’s unfair’ and the various other bullshit I read on the topic basically says that the white woman is *worthier* than the asian woman or that rose is a downgrade from rey which is fucking bullshit, rose isn’t even a bad character all the contrary. and that’s for the het side of it, but like then it’s not as good as stormpilot because it’s a straight ship (NOOOO THEY MADE FINN STRAIGHT/THEY’RE NOT MAKING THEM GAY THIS IS SUCH BULLSHIT = stuff I legit saw on the tag) and ngl I’m 100% sure that the fact that daisy is Standard Attractive and kelly marie t/ran is lovely but doesn't conform to the usual beauty standard western-viewers apply on asian women did play a role in there, but: what did I say before? the slash ship is automatically better than the het ship never mind that they’re both biracial and rose is actually a rep (asian girls who don’t adhere to stereotypical body shapes - and like, the rep for all body types and shapes should be valid for all women, not just white) that isn’t exactly popular especially in mainstream cinema, so people should be happy.... but since rose is Not A Dude and Not Rey and Not The Right Kind Of Representation For That Crowd, automatically rose is a shit character and deserves to be viciously hated on. and this is a thing done by people who most likely then turn on the other side and talk shit about horrible straight women who hate the only female character for getting in the way of their slash ship without realizing that their rose hate is exactly that. and of course since sto/rmpilot is the two good guys, if you ship that then you also have to hate re/ylo because how can you, a person who ships The Good Ship On The Light Side, support such a problematic enemies to lovers thing? yeah, right, hahaha.
this also tbqh also pairs up with how on tumblr people only recognize mental health issues/abuse victims when the narrative suits them - like, being a bad victim automatically means you lose sympathy and mental health issues are only valid if you aren’t ***privileged*** otherwise why would you have them, which shows transparently in how a lot of people absolutely deny that ky/lo ren is a) an abuse victim, b) obviously mentally ill however it is that he deals with it, but no, he has to be The Most Horrible In Existence Because Otherwise We Should Have Empathy For A Bad Guy Who Also Might Get Redeemed And Redemption Is Not Happening Ever Because Bad People Don’t Deserve it.
like, all of the issues sw sequel trilogy has when it comes to the fandom are direct consequences of the nonsensical social justice calvinism climate on tumblr dot com that no one took care to put a stop to since 2013 and of its ridiculous oppression olympics and pitting people against each other and that was my take. cheers.
(ps: I also ship sto/rmpilot like woah and it’s my otp but there’s a reason why I unfollowed most SP blogs I followed and why I don’t go into the tag anymore - I’m not here for the anti-rose racism dressed up as performative wokeness, I’m not here to get lectured about as a white person I fetishize poc gay men if I ship it - yes I read that too - and I’m not here to read a bunch of meta about how re/ylo is a bad ship and blah blah blah, so yeah. I feel you.) (pps: ky/lo ren isn’t even my favorite character and I care relatively but gdi the way the fandom approaches him is honestly mindboggling in that sense, and I don’t mean people who actually dislike him because fair reasons, I mean people who can’t recognize his abuse victim status and the precarious status of his mental health. like, not all abuse victims and mentally ill people are the right victim or come from the right background and you can be cool motive still murder and still recognize that he’s like that because he has issues, not because he was drawn that way. /bye)

Congratulations, PIKA! You’ve been accepted for the role of PORTIA with a faceclaim change to JESSICA VU. Admin Rosey: Be still my heart, for it has been captured ruthlessly and quite brutally by your interpretation of my darling, my sweet Pandora. “ …there’s a hubris to pandora that intrigues me. everybody sees life through a window, and pandora is no exception. she prides herself on her pragmatism and her ability to cut through the whimsical bullshit that others fancy. and maybe that helps her see the world more clearly.” It was in the beginning of your application that I noticed you captured the cruz of her character and for that, I thank you. I can’t wait to see our machina on the dash!  Please read over the checklist and send in your blog within 24 hours.

Character | PORTIA, or pandora linh phan, with a fc change to jessica vu! (you might need to age her down a year bc jessica is only 19 but idk if it’s super feasible for someone that young to be a captain?? oof idk ur call adminnies!! or if it comes to it i’m ok with using jolie LOL i just prefer jessica.)
What drew you to this character? |
listen, i fucking love portia. the paradoxical free spirit who binds herself to the most minutiae of the rules? someone who simultaneously adheres to and flouts convention? a lawyer who uses her words for mercy? BADASS.
and then. AND THEN. you all reimagined her to be even more badass, which is certainly impressive. pandora isn’t a direction i would have imagined portia to be taken in. this is not a woman who would manipulate the law as an agent of mercy (though i imagine she certainly could, if she so chose to). no, this is a portia who has chosen to use her keen intellect in pursuit of the truth above all else, a product of the machinations imposed on her throughout her entire life. as an heiress, there have been strings cast upon her since birth. she has simply grabbed them to take control of whatever facets of her destiny she could.
but to return to the question, i think what really drew me in to pandora’s character was the lingering paradoxes you teased in her skeleton. for all she appears to be an unstoppable, calculating machine of a woman, a part of her still fears the inexplicable. though she might seem callous toward even her family, she wants to use her influence to help others—i imagine that in a world where she was not sent to the mob, she would have ended up a major humanitarian. i think it’s easy to be misled by pandora, to see only her calculating exterior and not dig into her underlying belief systems. she may be sharp enough to see and understand things about the world that the rest of us may not pick up on, but that ability has almost certainly strongly shaped her own views. the possibility of exploring the inner workings of someone so complex is something that makes me giddy on its own, and that’s before you even factor in the possibility of character development, because…
…there’s a hubris to pandora that intrigues me. everybody sees life through a window, and pandora is no exception. she prides herself on her pragmatism and her ability to cut through the whimsical bullshit that others fancy. and maybe that helps her see the world more clearly. but i think it gives her a very deliberate blind spot when it comes to her own weaknesses and the strength of mankind; she can predict what man’s folly will lead to, but i don’t think she’s had enough experience with positive relationships to understand the strength of human bonds. so there’s a lot to explore there, as well! and all of that’s before you start talking about her role within the mob and its interplay with her pre-existing heuristic reasoning omg. this is a girl that was forced into a war and turned it into a game. there are just a lot of layers to explore within pandora, is what i’m trying to say, and conflict between the various aspects of self that make up her identity.
ALSO HAVE I MENTIONED I LUV BADASS LADIEZ BC WOWOW I RLY DO UNF
What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |
foul is fair and fair is foul:
to build off of what i introduced in the previous section, i think that a major underlying theme within pandora’s character is the notion of control. she is so used to having it—over others, but most importantly over herself—and fears losing it so much that i would love to see it wrested from her. pandora considers herself above verona’s war, in a way; as a captain, she doesn’t touch blood, and as a phan, she knows (or assumes, at the very least) that she has a way out. she is inherently analytical and never impulsive. but this is a game where logic fails in the face of the whims of faux gods, of ambrosia and warfare and the hands of witches. pandora’s been lucky so far in how the world has kept to its unspoken rules, but silly girl. the very otherness that separates her from verona’s darkness may very well doom her to it. let her see she that the best-laid plans have nothing against the hand of god. let her see that she cannot play a game where the rules are a sham.
the quality of mercy is not strain’d…:
pandora is a young captain, especially for only having been a montague for three years. surely, there are mixed feelings about that within the montague ranks. i think her relationship with castora is notable because of how unexpected it was for her to pick up castora as a mentee and how pandora herself wanted someone to show her the ropes. she clearly has ambition and intelligence, but she isn’t necessarily agreeable, nor particularly concerned about crossing the line into insensitivity. what i’m trying to say is that in the mob it takes a certain willingness for action to rise as quickly as pandora has, particularly as someone who isn’t part of one of the traditional mob families. despite what some of the rumors say, it is certainly not because of her wealth or her engagement, what has she done to position herself so valuably in so little time? who has she made enemies of? allied with?
and more importantly, what consequences will these actions have now, particularly during the unrest?
…it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven:
because of how quickly pandora has made herself indispensable to the montagues, i feel like it’s easy to overstate her loyalty to her fiance’s family. but loyalty isn’t necessarily something logical, and pandora’s first loyalty is to her logic. i don’t think it’s impossible for a party to shift her loyalties, whether it be to the capulets, to the montagues, or to finding peace another way. she may have her mind set on serving the montagues but her eyes are not closed to the complex reality of the situation she’s in. perhaps a compelling argument could shift her view.
oh romeo, oh romeo:
pandora’s relationship with roman is something i’d like to explore bc i’m a slut for romantic-coded plots because love seems antithetical to everything pandora values. there’s no logic to love, no real value that seems to be had from it. furthermore, it requires a relinquishing of control, and that more than anything is enough for it to be completely unattractive to pandora. she certainly respects, and to a certain extent cares for roman, but it is duty that binds them.
so i say, let her fall. it’ll be against her better judgement, certainly, and maybe it’ll end well, or maybe it’ll end with disaster. maybe she’ll finally learn to trust roman, and maybe that will lead to something more. perhaps she’ll fall for someone else, a rival, maybe, and their story will end in tragedy. either way, there is something to be said about how love can derail the best-laid plans.
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | lol sure i guess as long as there’s some kind of like plot sense to be made yknow
In Depth
In-Character Interview:
The girl they send to interview Pandora-—and make no mistake, it is unmistakably a girl—looks like she could be Pandora’s age. Her blouse is crisply ironed, but the collar is slightly crooked. Her pen is cheap, and so are her shoes. Her earnestness is palpable. She is pretty, but she wears her youth in her face. Perhaps a person in the habit of indulging whimsy could have pictured the two women as roommates, recent graduates worried about internships and graduate school applications. Pandora, however, is not one of those people.
Their passing similarities are increasingly eclipsed by their differences the longer the women sit, the still-nameless girl fumbling with her notes, Pandora perfectly still. It’s easy for Pandora to mask her annoyance with indifference, less so for her to silence the disdain on her tongue. But she does, sympathizes with the girl, even. She does not belong here, that much is clear. Perhaps this is how Athena felt when she was challenged by Arachne.
Eventually, the girl finds her footing. “What is your favorite place in Verona?” she asks.
There’s a moment that, on anyone else, would have been considered hesitation. On Pandora, it reads like anticipation, like the world is taking a moment to prepare itself for the words she is to say. “Would it be surprising for me to say Verona’s library? It contains a rather incredible collection of historical Roman documents.” It’s not a lie, not really. The library fascinates her, but not for the stories it holds in its walls. Rather, it’s the stories that unfold in its shadowy corners that draw her interest. If the girl isn’t a total fool, she can figure out the rest.
And apparently she does, or she is at least willing to take the answer at its face, because she presses on. “What does your typical day look like?” she asks.
“If you’re looking for a jetsetting life of glamour, I’m afraid you must go elsewhere.” Pandora feigns a sigh, twirling a lock of hair around a finger. “I wake up early, drink tea—I’ve recently given up coffee, you know—and meditate. If I have business for the wedding, I’ll tend to that; if not, I’ll study.”
There’s a look in her conversation partner’s eyes that seems akin to doubt. Ha. Certainly a recent graduate, then. Pandora smiles benevolently, but her eyes are cutting. The girl has shown weakness. “You seem surprised,” she says lightly. “I know it’s been going around that I’m taking a year off of schooling for the wedding, but you don’t think I’d be content as a trophy wife, would you?” Her parents had, and look where that had gotten all of them. She doesn’t sneer, but it’s a close thing.
The girl can’t meet her eyes, so Pandora continues. “Anyhow. I’ll usually spend the afternoon attending to family business, either my own or the Montague’s.” And wasn’t that the truth. “I try to meet with my fiance in the evenings. And at night?” She tilts her head coquettishly, but on Pandora, the action reads almost predatory, the gaze of a panther deliberating a strike. “I don’t think that’s any of your business.”
“And what of Montague’s more…nefarious business dealings? Do you have any comment on those?”
Huh. Perhaps the girl has more backbone than Pandora credited her with. A single, impeccably groomed brow rises.
“I do not.”
The girl swallows, then continues. “Okay, um…well…What has been your biggest mistake thus far?”
Pandora laughs, and the sound is beautiful but out of place, uncannily youthful from a creature that seems to transcend conventional labels. It’s easy to forget that Pandora is young, barely out of girlhood herself, worlds apart as she is from her interviewer.
“Darling,” she says, “I don’t make mistakes.”
She knows what they say about her, how they call her bella macchina, how they quaver before her ruthless pragmatism. Was it so bad to lean into the reputation? There were worse things to be associated with. And looking at her, content in her realm, a spider in the orb of her nest, it is so, so easy to believe. It is easy to forget that it is not her dominion, that Verona is not her land and the Montague-Capulet fight is not her fight, in the strictest sense. But nobody is as acutely aware of the reality of her situation as Pandora is. She is but a tool.
And thus, her mistakes are not her mistakes. It’s logical, really.
She has shaken her interviewer. That much is certain. But Pandora must give the girl credit, because she pushes on. “What has been the most difficult task asked of you?”
Pandora could recite a litany, if she so wanted to: becoming a Montague, being the Phan her parents intended, swallowing her knives instead of spitting them, unlocking the gilded cage her birth placed her in.
“Taking a break from school.” She sighs, and this time there’s a sort of truth to her wistfulness. It isn’t that she dislikes taking a more prominent role within the Montague family—to the contrary, it has been one of the most exciting experiences she has been able to apply herself to. There’s something about the unpredictability of mob life that challenges Pandora in a way that few other things have been able to. Though she likes the satisfaction of conclusions predicted, of victory strategized four steps in advance, there’s something exhilarating in being kept on her toes. However, she has a raw love for learning—for bettering her understanding—that is unique from her love for the game. There’s a comfortable reliability to the rules in academia, a safe expectation of how things are to react. And recently,  she sometimes misses the reliability of writ law, despite the new opportunities Alvise’s death has unlocked.
Perhaps it would be more apt to say that coming to Verona has been akin to opening Pandora’s Box. What a joke.
The interviewer pushes Pandora out of her thoughts. She has been saying something that Pandora could probably recite later, but didn’t particularly care enough to consider. Eventually, she reaches another question. Her last, if Pandora remembered correctly. And Pandora always remembers correctly. “What are your thoughts on the war between the Capulets and the Montagues?”
Pandora averts her eyes; she is not so proud to pretend that she is a good enough actress to hide the hunger in her eyes. “I don’t understand it.”
It’s not a lie. War, as a general concept, is inherently paradoxical—and that fascinates Pandora. The way that man has tried to civilize it, put rules to it, when it is ultimately a series of acts that defy basic human ethics, the one set of laws all decent men ought to follow. The attempts to moralize it. The strategy involved, the balancing act between victory and order and understanding. Understanding the philosophical notions of war is one of the few universal perplexities that Pandora itches to scratch, a puzzle that she can’t immediately solve.
Of course, in the meantime, there’s always the art of war to busy herself with. That, on the other hand, comes naturally to Pandora, almost frighteningly so.
She finally meets the girl’s eyes. “You can understand my concern, of course, especially for my fiance.” She clutches her hand in a gesture that could be mistaken as one of disquiet. “Dearest Roman…as long as this rages on, there’s a target on his back,” she says entreatingly.
Of course, she neglects to mention that there is a matching mark on her own.

Pandora graduated summa cum laude from her undergraduate program, where she studied economics and public policy. Technically, she’s a law school student—as her day job, if you will—but since Alvise’s death, she’s taken a break to focus on her work as a captain (or, depending on who’s asking, to focus on her engagement).
Pandora is fascinated by the Witches. They fall under the category of things she cannot explain, and that simultaneously frightens and attracts her. She spends a fair amount of time at the Museum, as a result.
Pandora is notoriously dismissive of things she finds wasteful, but she’s actually very into fashion and art.
Pandora is pretty skilled with languages. She’s fluent in Italian, English, and Vietnamese. She’s passably conversational in German and Mandarin, and can speak enough Japanese to conduct business.
Pandora doesn’t touch drugs or alcohol if she can avoid it. She’ll partake in wine socially, but otherwise avoids mind-altering substances. After all, her mind is her greatest asset. What is she without it?

Activist Larken Rose Weighs In on Bitcoin, Anarchy, and the Importance of Permissionless Cash
Though his latest project with partner and fellow activist Amanda Rose, Candles in the Dark, is a program helping people escape authoritarian programming through non-confrontational dialogue, there’s nothing meek and mild about Larken Rose’s stance when it comes to government. News.Bitcoin.com recently connected with the outspoken anarchist via Skype to talk about Bitcoin, the IRS, and the importance of permissionless money.
Bumping Into Crypto
News.Bitcoin.com (BC): How did you get into the crypto space?
Larken Rose (LR): I only accidentally crashed sideways into crypto stuff just because so many people who are into freedom and self-ownership got into it when it came along, realizing it could be a really useful tool to resist centralized control. I’m by no means any sort of expert on it. I was just sort of dragged along for the ride, because at this point it’s kind of hard to not be hearing about it and involved with it if you’re into freedom, because it’s such a useful tool for that.
BC: Do you remember when that was?
LR: It was a number of years ago, and I remember I heard the term a bunch of times before I had the foggiest idea what it meant, and what it referred to. It may have been at Porcfest in New Hampshire, where some of the guys promoting it early on actually gave me some of the physical Bitcoins, back when they were worth like a dollar each, and I think they gave me 20 of them.
And, I sold them at a sadly low rate, well before it went up. I accidentally held onto one of them, without knowing I still had it, but I eventually gave that one to my daughter and she ended up getting a car out of it, so I’m happy about that. But it was a number of years later before I really understood the beauty and the power of the concept of blockchain and decentralized, uncontrollable mediums of exchange.
Bitcoin and Voluntaryism
BC: You’re a voluntaryist. More people are learning what that word means lately, but most still don’t know. What’s it all about?
LR: In short, to be a voluntaryist means you advocate that all human interaction be voluntary, rather than by way of violence and coercion. And when you describe it that way, almost everybody initially reacts by saying, ‘Oh yeah, that’s me; I totally agree; that’s what I want too.’
But they don’t recognize that, even if they live that way in their daily lives — when it comes to politics, almost everybody has been taught that there’s an exception for the people who call themselves ‘government,’ and that it’s okay if they threaten violence and rob you by threats of force and boss you around and control you. A voluntaryist is basically somebody who realizes that the whole ‘live and let live’ and ‘do unto others as you would have done unto you,’ there’s not an exception for government.
BC: You’ve touched on this a little already, but where do you see crypto and voluntaryism intersecting?
LR: To me there are two very important pieces that have to go together to actually get a large number of people being able to be free, and eventually society being free. One is the mentality, and that’s what my main focus is on: having people stop believing that they’re obligated to obey a ruling class. But after that, then you need the tools necessary to be ungovernable. And some of those tools are, for example, guns. If you’re gonna resist oppression, if they have guns, it’s convenient if you do too.
But when it comes to currency and all the frauds and the tricks that governments have done by way of fiat currency and central banks and all that garbage, crypto is just a very powerful tool for those who are mentally ready to escape the controls of a ruling class, to be able to trade and basically have a complex international economy that doesn’t have the tentacles of the ruling class in it anywhere. And that’s huge.
BC: What would your response be to those people who say, ‘Yeah, these rules suck, the government’s terrible, but without it, it would be chaos’?
LR: People have been trained by the ruling class to imagine that, without the ruling class, we’d be these stupid, violent animals. And it’s already the case that the average person, all the things in his life that work, aren’t because he personally figured them out. The average person who buys a car doesn’t know how to build a car. The average person who goes grocery shopping doesn’t know how to grow all that food, and they don’t need to.
The order and the complexity and the cooperation and the productivity already comes from voluntary interaction. But it’s easy for politicians to scare most people into thinking, ‘Well if nobody’s in charge, if there isn’t a government bossing everyone around, then it will be this chaotic free-for-all.’ There’s no reason to actually believe that.
If you go to a supermarket—it’s one of my favorite examples of anarchy in action—yeah, it has government tentacles in there getting in the way and robbing people, but nobody’s forced to be involved, and you get an amazing level of complexity and organization and cooperation, and nobody’s being forced to do anything—not the people who work there and not the customers who go and buy stuff there.
IRS, Anarchy and Activism
BC: Speaking of governments and money, you had a run-in—well, a run-in is kind of a mild way to put it—but you had some trouble with the IRS. Could you tell us just a little bit about that, and what happened there?”
LR: My adventures with the federal extortion racket are something I don’t usually talk very much about these days, because it takes so much time and effort for people to actually get into it and to learn it. If anybody wants the full story for free, I now give away my book, Kicking the Dragon (Confessions of a Tax Heretic), for free as an e-book.
BC: Could you tell us about your activism? I know Candles in the Dark is going online on Thanksgiving, and you’re speaking at Anarchapulco again this year.
LR: Yep. Well I have a number of books, The Most Dangerous Superstition being the main one, and I’ve given a bunch of talks and I still do here and there. I don’t like to preach to the choir, so usually when I give talks it’s with the intention of it being recorded and ending up on YouTube or something, to talk to the rest of the world. I also just started doing my daily podcast again. But the two main things I’m working on now—one is the Candles in the Dark seminar, and the full online version will be up and running by Thanksgiving and we’re already taking pre-orders now.
What that does, for people who are already voluntaryists, is teach them a drastically more effective method of communicating with the rest of the world, that doesn’t just result in the usual stress and emotions and arguments and frustration, that normal debates almost always end in. It’s not at all what I do in public. When I publicly debate I’m blunt and totally in people’s faces, and that’s for a totally different purpose.
And then the other major—the biggest project I’m working on; probably the biggest project I will do in my whole life—is called The Mirror, which is basically an interactive program that does the whole process for us. So voluntaryists don’t even need to know how to do it; The Mirror will do it for them, all by itself.
BC: So just strap on the VR goggles and set them free from statism.
LR: Pretty much, because it does the conversation by itself. It asks them what they believe about things and their answers determine where it goes next. And that’s a monstrous project which is still many months away from being completed. But ultimately that will make it so we don’t even have to be good at communication, because it will do it for us. So hopefully I won’t get suicided before that’s done.
The Future of Crypto Freedom
BC: It seems like there’s a split in the cryptocurrency community at large, where you’ve got the more libertarian-minded crowd that’s saying, ‘We’ve got to use this privately, between ourselves, as peer-to-peer permissionless cash,’ and you’ve got this other group saying, ‘Well, it’s gotta be regulated, and we’ve gotta get the government in on this thing.’
LR: I want the government involved in absolutely nothing. It shouldn’t freaking exist. I’m kind of on that side of the spectrum.
BC: Yeah, I kind of figured.
LR: But what I love about the concept of blockchain and the concept of cryptocurrencies is that the ruling class can try with varying degrees of success to try to stick its nose into different kinds of trading and different cryptos, and it can try to regulate this and that and the other thing, but the thing it can’t ever do away with is the idea.
Now that the ideas of blockchain and cryptocurrencies are out there, there is nothing that will keep it down forever. It’s not like there’s some centralized place where, if they go and shut down that thing, it’s gone forever. Even if there was some magic button that would make Bitcoin disappear—and it doesn’t work that way—another one would appear. And then a hundred more would appear. The ideas are, to me, what is most powerful. It’s the evolution of ideas and technology and understanding that can’t be undone, and that can’t be regulated out of existence. That doesn’t mean they won’t try it, but in the long run they are doomed; they have no chance of squelching this permanently.

(UN)SENT TEXT MESSAGES █ ▌ ❄ ❛ MEME
@prodiitor
i.
she should not still  have his number, ur thought as she bit on her thumb. she should have deleted a long time ago, but — she had never managed to bring herself to cut their tie with the necessary determination. leaving the backdoor unlocked, just in case — it spoke volumes about the worst side of her, about the inherent  weakness  she possessed. the question she had on her mind was innocent enough, on the paper. ur knew their situation too well to genuinely believe that there were innocent questions as far as they were concerned. and she had learned, had she not?
still, she held her  breath and typed it out, letter for letter. not because she wanted to send it  ( because she was not sure if she wanted that )  but to prove to herself that she could open the  empty  conversation and type something after having deleted all their previous messages right after their breakup. it went without saying that back then, she had been considerably more certain of where she had wanted things to go.
[ txt ]  are you gonna be at that party sanchez is throwing?
for a moment, maybe  a second, maybe a minute, her thumb hovered over the  send  button, then she firmly pressed backspace until the message was erased from her screen, if not from her mind. she had made the decision to stay away from silver before she could end up  hurt  and it was time she would start to honour that decision.
ii.
ur had not cried  about the things her father did — the neglect, the cruel ignorance — since she had been a child. she had come to terms with it, had accepted that he would never care about her and that fooling herself into thinking that this might change, one day, would only hurt her in the long run. because octavian would never change. sometimes, of course, anger was growing inside of her and sometimes, she could admit that much, this anger was nearly enough to drive tears to her eyes. and as cleansing as it would be to cry and even though he would never know, she could not cry over her father, could not let him have that victory.
however, right now, she  could feel furious tears prickling in her eyes as she defiantly blinked them away. it was so silly, really, she reminded herself. she had known that her father would be attending her grandmother’s birthday party and she had even anticipated that he would gleefully take apart that  stupid  case she had lost the other week, but she had not known that for a reason that was entirely beyond her, silver had been invited to the party as well. and while she hated it when her father tore into her failures and pointed out just where she had gone wrong, exactly, it was even  worse  when the man she had lost to was around as well.
it had been a  terrible day, terrible enough for her to throw herself onto her couch with no intention to get up anytime soon while her tea was still in the kitchen — forgotten, abandoned doomed to grow as cold and bitter as her. it had been bad enough for her to glare at her phone’s screen while she furiously scrolled through messages, only to open the  shockingly  active conversation she had with her ex, a conversation that had been painfully obviously solely about work in the last … four months since he had texted her a simple enough question.
[ txt ]  breaking news: i still hate his guts. wow. shocking. tell the press … anyway, /you/ know that i didnt throw the case, right? bc that’s what he not-so-subtly implied
looking at the message,  she sighed. she could practically hear the insecurity and the childish need for validation she should long have learned to live without oozing out from her phone. deleting the message again, she set the phone aside and closed her eyes, falling asleep before she could decide to do something she would only regret.
iii.
that she would send  the first message she had typed out had never been a question. not telling silver that she would not be able to make their meeting would be unnecessarily rude, and right now, upsetting him would not be her smartest move. they were linked, once more, and theirs was a dance on knife’s edge, a dance were a simple misstep would demand a high tribute, a tribute she was not ready to pay.
the second text … she  sighed, shaking her head. while she  had  to tell him that the meeting was off, she would not elaborate. only a few years ago, she would have called, would not have texted him  my sincere apologies, but something came up so i can’t make the meeting  and left it at that. because she  would  leave it at that, would delete the message consisting of  grandma is in the hospital, i don’t know how long it will take  because they were  through,  even if it did not always show, and because he had no longer any business knowing what state her grandmother was in.
( nevermind the fact that she  knew  that out of all her boyfriends, he had been the only one to get along with the — stubborn woman, that he had been the only one the lady had ever approved of. )
shoving her phone back  into her pocket, she splashed cold water into her face and wiped it off with her scarf before slipping back into the room where her grandmother was waiting for a doctor to tell her what was up.
iv.
the absence of a  ring on her finger changed the game, but not in the way she would have wanted it to. yes, she felt better, knowing that bane had chosen to bow out and disappear from her life rather than to attempt going through with the plan her father had constructed. it was likely that money had changed its owner, definitely, but it was over now and ur did not allow her thoughts to linger  there.  not when she had more pressing concerns, such as the way quite a few men were circling the table she was sitting at, likely looking to strike up a conversation.
it was annoying, but  it was nothing that caused her to worry as long as they kept their distance. she had no interest in playing nice with people who failed to understand that she wanted to be left alone. to further add to the air she  wanted  to give off, she toyed with her ever-present phone, reading a news article here and answering an email there before she found herself in her messaging app, replying to a few texts she had not gotten around to yet. like the one silver had sent her, asking  ( not for the first time )  for information she would not give him.
[ txt ]  i know that you still think that i get a kick out of saying no to you, silver, but seriously, just drop it. confidentiality is a thing and i take it seriously
but before she could  hit the send button, a shadow fell onto her steak and she looked up, both surprised and not to meet silver’s vaguely amused stare. he did not ask if the other chair was taken, simply pulled it back and sat. the expression on his face was a challenge, a raised eyebrow and a quarter of a smirk, but she did not rise to meet it. there was no reason to be childish, now.
“ the answer is no, you know, ” she said calmly, even though she stabbed her fork into a potato with far more aggression than necessary or justified. “ so don’t even ask. ”
he grinned because of  course he did before he reached across the table, pouring water into her water glass and taking a sip, never breaking eye contact. “ it has to be a good evening for you, bambi, if you can indulge in your favourite hobby, telling me no, ” he said and she did not break eye contact either as she pressed the backspace button.
v.
ur blinked, disbelief growing  inside of her as she read the last text message silver had had the  nerve  to send her again. she had read it at least nine times already, but it still did not make a lot of sense to her. he would surely enjoy knowing this, knowing that he could still throw her off like that. it was annoying and she had dealt with sanchez and his empty threats for most of the day, she did not have the patience to deal with silver's antics now. usually, she had some patience left at the end of the day, enough patience to handle him, but she was burned out right now.
[ txt ]  i refuse to reply to any of your messages as long as you write like a 15-year-old child, silver
calling him a child  was actually mild, but it would --- in all likelihood --- only encourage him further. in a way, this was the actual problem: that convincing silver to stop something was an art she had never mastered, no matter how much she had tried. and even this time, it would get her nowhere. he would only be smug about having found a way to get under her skin and then, he would never stop.
in some ways, his  tendency to get on her nerves was oddly reassuring because it gave away what he tried to cover up: that he still cared, too. because if she no longer mattered to him, he would not try to get a reaction out of her. sure, he  lived  to get a rise out of others, but she had known him for a very long time now and he had never been this persistent. but she would refrain from drawing his attention towards that fact; it was a fact that he knew more about her than he had ever revealed and if she kept some knowledge about him to herself, well, it would only even things out for them.
+ i.
the smile on her  face was subtle as she took a sip of her tea, enjoying the winter sun on her face. she knew that her staff probably wondered about how her general mood had improved recently, but she knew them well enough to know that they would hardly question it  too  much and neither would they talk about it with others; they were all hand-picked and she had chosen them for their ability to keep their mouths shut.
it was not paranoia  if one's father had actually placed spies in one's surroundings in the past. she had found it odd then, having previously taken an odd sense of reassurance from her father's overt disinterest in her, but she had since understood what it had been about: her father had not sent his spies because she was his daughter, he had sent spies because he had worried she might become his competition.
for a moment, she  wondered if her father would actually lose it completely if he heard that after his horrible daughter had broken up with the fiancé he had selected for her, she was  kind of  seeing the ex he had always disapproved of once again. as amusing as the idea was, ur doubted that her father cared enough about her to feel bothered by this.
but talking of the  other  devil, the one she actually  loved  liked --- her phone beeped twice and she smiled a little more as she grabbed the device from the desk. unsurprisingly, it was silver, asking if she wanted to grab dinner somewhere after work. well, that was the gist of it, it was wrapped into his usual ... silverisms, but she had long learned to decode them.
[ txt ]  i'll see you at the usual spot in an hour, then? i only need to wrap a few things up, then i can leave
for a moment, she  hesitated, not because she was unsure about the message itself, but because she felt like something was missing, something she should remind him of more often.
[ txt ]  love you
