I don’t remember how it came up, but my dad was saying one of the few traditional foods he really liked was cholent. I was like ?? I’ve never even had cholent, because it’s meat stew... But apparently my grandmother’s cholent was vegan! I’d never even heard of vegan cholent! Now I’d like to try it, but my dad unfortunately doesn’t really have much of an idea of how she made it.

#my dad and I are both vegetarians #we'd both make the occasional exception as kids (respectively) but are pretty strict vegetarians as adults #of course it wasn't that hard on my parents for me to be a vegetarian because I was just like my dad #it wasn't all the way easy because I was growing up in the 80s and 90s and outside my parents' house options could be limited #and at friends' and relatives' houses it was always a HUGE problem of course #(although he'd obviously tolerate it better because he was an adult and I was a kid)#but it was very hard on my grandmother that my dad was a vegetarian #not quite as hard as you might think because she learned a lot of cooking in Israel and from Italian neighbors in America #and those are both considerably more vegetarian-friendly cuisines than Eastern European is #but still
