At one point when I was procrastinating on stuff I decided to build some SV teams for some of my fave pokemon characters for a scenario where the DLC added a battle-tree type thing where you could battle trainers from older games (I'm not necessarily expecting this to be a thing I just wanted an excuse to build new teams) so

The rules are no paradox pokemon, no more than 1 pseudo-legendary on a team, the final pokemon has to terastalise, and I'm sticking to the pre-Home and pre-DLC pokedex.

Starting off with Cynthia:

Cynthia has a couple of different teams across different games, but Spiritomb in the front Lucario in the middle Garchomp at the back is something of a constant, and luckily for me they're all available in Paldea for me to use. From there my main goal was keeping a good type spread, which is what Cynthia's team is usually known for, while also respecting her general aesthetic.

Lycanroc (Dusk form) takes her second slot because Cynthia has a tendency for using Pokemon difficult or at least annoying to obtain, and Dusk Form Lycanroc is in my opinion unique enough to fit in with that. While it's not necessarily my first pick for her, I think it works in well with the type spread here and can keeps up with other pokemon she's used. For as much as I'd love to give her a Noivern or a Grimmsnarl I felt this was the better option, though I'd be open to hearing alternatives!

Kilowattrel was my choice for the third slot because I had to choose at least one Gen 9 Pokemon for her new team, and Electric/Flying is a pretty good typing and I can see Cynthia liking this Pokemon aesthetically. It's all black and yellow.

Hatterene is here because Psychic/Fairy is a good typing and Cynthia likes using elegant looking Pokemon, but Gardevoir is property of Diantha so Hatterene is a nice alternative. She's purely here for aesthetics but I feel she pulls her weight as a threat in her own right, I'm sure a Hatterene in Cynthia's hands would be a headache.

Finally, Garchomp gets Steel as its Tera-type, for the more defensive option. If you thought you were bringing a Fairy type to this fight, think again!

Now for Diantha:

Diantha only has her Gen 6 team for me to build a new team from, but the three available options in Paldea are the options I would have gone with anyway. Hawlucha starts her off, Goodra comes in at the close, and then you have Gardevoir at the finish line. Similar to Cynthia, Diantha has a pretty good type spread so that was what I wanted to focus on as well, and ultimately I'm pretty happy with this team.

Closdire was my pick for her second slot, because if Goodra is anything to go by Diantha likes cute, goofy looking Pokemon and Clodsire can definitely hold its own, especially if it has Water Absorb to complement Goodra's Sap Sipper, giving it an extra immunity.

Palafin is next up, which would ideally switch out to its Hero form at the first opportunity. It's a good Pokemon on its own (if it can get its Hero form up) but thematically I think it's very fun for Diantha to have the hidden superhero gimmick Pokemon. Reminds me of Sina and Dexio a bit, too.

Ceruledge is a personal pick, because given her Tyrantrum I think it's safe to say Diantha likes tough-looking Pokemon too and maybe I wanted her to match with a certain other fire type. Fire/Ghost is a good typing that rounds out the cast, so I'm pretty happy with it here.

Lastly, for as much as I'd love to give Diantha an Iron Valiant, she must have her Gardevoir and I've chosen to give it the offensive Fairy Tera-type. I'd have loved to give it Fire as a defense against steel but ultimately I prefer the more offensive approach in place of a Mega Evoution, and Fairy over Psychic to remind you which games the Fairy type debuted in.

And for Malva:

This is purely me having fun with it at this point. Malva gets her three available Pokemon but switches out Armarouge for Chandelure. I simply want her to have it. She's even got a matching ponytail they're like sisters.

Also she gets Salazzle because is there a more Malvacore Pokemon? They're both bad bitches they're gossiping about you they're toxic as hell. Give Malva a Salazzle 2024 this is my agenda.

And of course Talonflame gets Grass as a Tera-type. If you think you were sweeping with a water type think again!!!

Anyway if you have any thoughts or suggestions about these teams lemme know! I'd also be open to doing more but also if you want to try it yourself it's a lot of fun go for it

Korrasami/Wuko/OC insert soulmate Au part 3?

I really am trying not to have my OC overrun this but writing her out is a bit of self indulgent therapy for myself so I got carried away

Korra managed to convince Tenzin to let Asami stay at air temple island the night after the gala and Lin didnt let Lee out of her sight, still not convinced she could defend herself. Which royally pissed Lee off.

On air temple island Korra and Asami were clearing the table after breakfast when a knock came at the door. Asami huffed "I'll go get it, its probably my dad collecting me, he's weird about that" however behind the door was in fact not her dad, but Lin and Lee. "Chief Beifong, what a... pleasant surprise"

"Trust me, its not pleasant or surprising,"

"Hey!" Lin gave a scolding look to Lee who only grinned cheekily

"We just stopped by to see if you and Korra wanted to help me take some material from my warehouse out of the city and bring it... into the city"

"Id love to but I have meetings to go to with my dad today so I can't"

"I can!" Bolin called from behind the pair who turned to see him with Pabu on his shoulder "I'd love to see that warehouse of yours and help bring some explosives"

"Asami! Are you alright?" Korra called while walking up behind her "oh... Beifong" ah a nice grumpy glare"

"Korra" Lin responded

"Hi, I'm also here. Name's Lee... you might know me... yeah, just wanted to ask you to join me to my warehouse and help me bring stuff into the city"

"Oh.. uh.. sure, I can help"

"Great, lets hurry, we have to get a group training with Lee by noon today" and with that they loaded up in a truck with Lee driving and Lin holding onto the honorary oh shit handle that she had installed because, well.. 'oh shit this person drives like a lunatic'

Soon enough they pulled up to the warehouse and Lee grinned ear to ear "there she is, home sweet home"

"You.. live in your warehouse?" Bolin asked with a raised pitch of confusion in his voice while they walked towards the big building.

"What? No, the warehouse and storage vaults are connected to my house" Lee gave a laugh as she threw open the doors and went to take a step in, however when she took that first step she tugged at a wire and heard a click. Her eyes went wide at the realization. She had set off a three second tops explosion. She had now two seconds to fix this. Using second number two she lifted her hands and pushed Lin to the right while pushing Bolin and Korra to the left all the while screaming "get down"

"Hey!" Was all Lee managed to hear from Lin when she lit the blue flames in her hands and brought them infront of her just in time to block and deflect most of the explosion. The force sent her flying back ast a pair of trees and into the dirt behind it with a loud scream.

Hitting the ground she felt the air knock out of her. But heard the trio she came with running to her. The air managed to find its way back into her and she sprung to her feet "stay down! Someone broke in" she darted into the warehouse, but not without snatching the pair of cuffs off of Lin's hip, and lit a blue flame in her hand finding a man about to throw another bomb, though she was more prepared this time and made a spin kick to send it right back to him covering him in stinky sap. "Wrong bomb my good sir" she said and cuffed his hands together.

Tossing him out she told Lin to toss him in the back of the car with Bolin to watch him. "Lee, how did you not get hurt from that blast?" Korra asked with a very clearly confused look "and what was that blue glow?

"Oh, right, I forgot everyone assumed I was a nonbender, I'm a fireb-"

"Lee that was incredibly dangerous! What if you got hurt!"

"Shush Lin, I'm fine, I used my fire to deflect it, like I was trying to tell Korra, Im a firebender, I can deflect most explosions, and I use my warehouse to experiment and practice with bombs and the like... though, I do think I may have a few scrapes and bruises from that one, I wasn't as prepared and I didn't know what the timer was set to. I got lucky with a guess. Three seconds"

"Exactly! You. Got. Lucky. Dont do that again without telling me!"

"Lin if I didnt push you aside and control the blast we all would have been take out by it!" Lee jabbed a finger at Lin's chest "even if I did jump out of the way we would have been taken out. My deflecting doesn't just lessen the blow, it controls the blow and how much damage it causes!"

"Well, take a look at your warehouse! Not much danage control there huh?"

"Actually, there is! The entire building would barely be standing if I didnt deflect it! I'm not a helpless little mouse!"

"I know youre not but that was still very dangerous and stupid!"

"Lin. Just. Shut up, I did what I could in three seconds, help me open the vaults and get my materials or just leave and I'll clean up so I can stay" Lee turned back to her warehouse with a huff, the soot covered doors fell off their hinges as she walked in to search for anything outside the vaults that was salvageable.

Korra turned to Bolin and then the Lin "I've never seen anyone talk back to you like that before, Ive never even seen Lee mad before"

Bolin let out a wince at the memory of the small woman looking ready to kill Lin at a seconds notice "yeah, I think you struck a nerve"

Lin however had her arms crossed "what she did was incredibly dangerous"

"What she did saved all of out tails including hers, shes the explosives expert here, she knows what she's talking about"

They all turned their heads quick when they heard banging around on the othwr end of the warehouse paired with Lin yelling some obscenities. Making their way through the debri from the explosion they found Lee using a wrench half her size to hit at a vault valve handle "open up you stupid piece of metal! The explosion is over!" And with one last swing the valve spun and a loud click was hear "finally!"

It didn't take long to load up the different compounds and her personal belongings, given that she kept very little materials at a time and she didn't really have much in the way of material items. Sitting in the passenger seat with Korra and Bolin in the back on either side of the guy they caught, Lee snickered when she noticed the two covering their noses "hah, yeah, stinky sap, great when you want to get a hold on your opponent without hurting them but also want to make them hate their existence the entire time."

"This is the lamest type of bomb I've hear of" Bolin pouted

"I'll say" Korra agreed.

Once they were back in the city, Lin handed the guy off to her men before bringing the explosives materials to a secure storage facility and her belongings to Lin's apartment. By 30 til noon everything was done and Korra left with Bolin to head back to Air Temple Island.

"So.. uhm," Lin started "I wanted to apologize for how I reacted at your warehouse"

"Dont worry, I get it all the time, they see little ole me with my white hair, blue eyes and scars galore and think 'no way she's a bender!' Or 'no way she can defend herself' but Ive had my own back since I was 6" Lee shrugged "Im sorry for yelling at you... I normally don't flip out... its just different with you I guess"

"Yeah, dont mention it, we have to get to the station to set up the explosives division" and with that they were off.

Meanwhile on Air Temple Island Korra and Bolin were explaing what happened at the warehouse to a very disbelieving Asami and Tenzin.

"And she has blue fire!" Korra exclaimed with her hands in the air

"Blue fire? Now thats just ridiculous, the only person known to have blue fire was princess Azula and she was a prodigy" Tenzin argued

"Yeah, well, she used the fire to block the explosion, maybe she only focuses on heat deflection?" Bolin offered

Tenzin groaned "no matter how you try to spin it I'll have to see it to believe it, I mean come on, she doesn't have any feature a firebender normally has, most firebenders have gold, red, or brown eyes"

"Okay, look Korra, I belive you, but I really don't want to be talking about her without her here okay?" Asami said with a smile and took hold of Korra's hand "besides, you promised me you'd take me for a ride on Naga last night" Asami gave a small pout and Korra caved

"Fiiiine, but you should have been there, she yelled at Lin and Lin just took it"

"Woah, hold on, she did what? And she's still here to tell the tale?" Tenzin looked in disbelief "okay. Now I know your full of it, go have fun with Naga goodness, the things kids will make up these days" Tenzin huffed while walking back to where Pema and the kids were

The trio laughed while making their way to Naga, "youre serious aren't you? She has blue fire and yelled at Lin?"

"Yeah, I wouldn't believe it either but I saw it go down, Bolin and I both did

"Yeah, it was amazing, but. Hey, Korra, training tomorrow morning dont forget" Bolin made finger guns at Korra with a wink

"Yeah, will do, see you then Bolin" and with that Bolin made his way back to the arena while Korra and Asami rode around on Naga with and eventually settled down to have a picnic in the park.

Back at the station Lee managed to get into her uniform and was about to step into the room with her trainees. "Before we step in, whats my title? Officer Fox? Or?"

"Captain, you're leading the department so you have the title of Captain Fox" Lin said matter of factly "carry yourself like your leading an army into battle, you need to trust them and have them trust you. It won't be easy"

"You can say that twice" Lee rolled her eyes but Lin smirked

"It won't be easy"

"Oh my gods, shush it Lin" with a laugh she opened the door and schooled her expression while entering.

"Good afternoon officers" Lin started "as you know you're starting training to make up the new explosives division lead by Captain Fox. She will train each of you in the skills necessary. I'll let her take it from here"

Before Lee could speak an officer stifled laughter "I'm sorry Chief, I mean no disrespect, but do you really expect us to believe that little mousey here can teach us anything on explosives?"

Lin went to reprimand the officer but Lee held her hand up "no, Ive got this hun." She held her left hand behind her back and her right at her side when she walked taking a look at his badge she smiled when she read it "officer Tahn" looking up she smiled but had an irritated look in her eyes "it would serve you well not to underestimate little mousey. I've trained myself since I was seven to be a capable hand to hand fighter and bender. Not many have the ability with fire that I do, but most dont try to." She shifted her foot and created sparks "some have enough control to set a target" Taking a step closer to him he took a step back "i doubt you'd like to know if I can do that" she took the advantage of him being off balance to use a quick kick at his ankles to send him to the ground "and I would bet you'd like to know how to deflect and control blasts to lessen damage all around right?" She leaned down to him with a smirk

Tahn cleared his throat and gave a nod "yes ma'am"

"Good. Now, you'll notice I have you paired up in groups of two, one of you on each group is a firebender and the other is either a water, earth, or non bender. Both of you play an important role in bomb locating, identifying, diffusing, and deflecting." She walked along the middle flit of the ten groups. "While training with me I will teach you how to hear smell and feel the start of an explosion up to five seconds before it goes off. While with me I will teach you firebenders how to create blue fire to deflect and control the blast. And while with me everyone will learn how to dismantle a bomb thats been located and identified." Stopping at the end she turned to face the rooom of people staring at her "am I clear?"

When she received nothing but 'yes captain' in response she turned her focus to Lin who had what looked to be a proud smile, it was small, but if was there. "Alright, now, today I'll be demonstrating deflection five times in this room, you will all be outside to watch me. Chief Beifong will hold the remote and I will deflect minor explosions." She made her way to the front and helped Tahn up to his feet "Tomorrow and all of next week I will demonstrate and teach you how to create blue fire, am I understood?"

After they all cleared the room Lee shut off the lights in the room, taking her spot in the center while she waited for any signal. A nearly inaudible click sounded and she lit a small blue flame in each hand before bringing them together to deflect the explosion, the blue flames surrounded the explosion before taking it out and diminishing it to a meal singe on the ground. Extinguishing her flames she picked up on a the smell of rotten meat quickening lighting another flame and spinning on her heel she made a quick stance in time to stop the second explosion. The third she saw a small spark on the ceiling and deflected it with much more ease. The fourth and fifth were both clicks at the same time.

Once she finished deflecting the last two Lin swung the door open and clicked on the light. "So, any questions for today?" Lee asked while brushing a bit of dust off of her shoulder.

"Uh, yeah, how did nothing get destroyed? And how was this approved?" Tahn asked

"Simple answer for the first question, the heat from my fire is hotter than most explosions therefore it has the capability of extinguishing it when concentrated enough. As for the second question, ask your chief, I may be her soulmate but I do not speak for her, nor does she speak for me." Lee smiled "now, given that I had deflected a bigger explosion earlier today, I dont exactly have much energy left, so I'll leave you to your devices for the rest of the day."

"Can... can we try to deflect an explosion?" Tahn asked excitedly

"No." Lee said while fixing her posture "until you manage to create blue fire it is too dangerous for any of you to attempt what I did just now." Lee offered him a smile "I dont want you to get hurt because I didn't train you enough"

Tahn nodded "yes Captain"

"Thank you, now, Cheif Beifong will take over, I need to see a healer, my wrist got hurt on that last one" as she walked past Lin she bumped hips and whispered a "thank you" before heading out.

Back to the park Asami was ecstaticly explaining how the Satomobile worked to Korra who listened intently with a grin on her lips "wow, so, they use... what to power them?"

"Well the different models are powered by different things, some models are run by fire power and some by water power, but most are run by a little thing called Gasoline, its a liquid so Im sure you could bend it out of a car so it wouldn't even start up. But It helps run the motor" and Asami went on yet another rant about the mechanics involved with Korra watching with a bright smile. If this was who the universe chose for her then she was more than happy to accept.

An Angel With A White Warg

Orc x reader – can you write an orc x reader when the reader saves him Your group was a small bunch of misfits mishmashes together. You were made up of 5 members including yourself and you travelled through the surrounding areas as you pleased. Jason was the only other human in the group, although he could easily pass for a small orc in bars because of his height and lack of good posture. But he was the leader and an old friend of yours. Keli was the only other female in the group, and she was part goblin part human. She had long pointed ears and grey hair even though she was 25 years old. Her eyes were a dark brown colour and her fingers were a little longer than humans. Her father and mother had left her at a young age when you and Jason met her. She was your closest friend and you treated her like a sister. The last two members were two dwarven brothers called Markil and Sein. They had fallen into your group about 8 years ago during a raid which saw them fighting along side you, Jason and Keli for your life’s after an group of orcs had invaded the inn you were staying at. They were very quite and kept themselves to themselves, but it was better to travel in numbers in these areas. Both stood at 4 feet tall and had beards, Markils being ginger and Seins being more brown. You couldn’t guess their ages since dwarfs lived well beyond humans but they had joked they were 125 years old at one point. They were more the ‘elders’ of the group, guiding you around a battle rather than through it. This was your family. It wasn’t much, and it was broken, but it was yours. There was one addition made only 2 years ago, a warg. The dwarfs had tried to kill the poor thing, but you convinced them to spare its life. You called her Lunar, after her dazzling white coat that reminded you of a full moon. She was still in her teenaged years and had took a liking to you instantly. Of all the group, you were the weakest. Well, weakest was the wrong word. You were deadly with a sword and other weapon, but if something happened unexpected, you were the most valuable of the group. Keli had thicker skin and sharp nails. Her teeth were jagged at the ends so she could easily fight off an attacker. Jason with his strength and size made him intimidating to even try to take on. Markil and Sein were barley apart and never without a weapon in their hands. You were more passive, and kept everyone healthy. So you had persuaded the group to allow you to keep Lunar for protection, a position she seemed more than happy to fill. So your little band of misfits gained a member and you continued on your never-ending journey. You travelled to avoid prejudges. Humans weren’t looked on kindly, neither were dwarfs or halfborns (the word used for children whos parents are different). But you all had ways of making money. You made and sold knickknacks and knitted things. Keli used her nails to carve and wicker little things from wood. The dwarfs would trade with armour and weapons and Jason would offer his services as a labourer. Today, it had been dark and dingy. Jason had grumbled the entire journey because he was tired but Keli would just jab him in his back, joking that she would cut his eyelids off and he’d never sleep again. the group settled on a small camp area near a river about an hour before nightfall. Lunar had sprawled herself out near the fire and Jason had to usher her to the side when it came time to cook. Markil and Sein were first to fall asleep after night fall as their snores became prominent through the small camp. Keli had been next with Jason sleeping near her. You were left to watch for half the night, calling on Markil to take the next in a few hours. Lunar sat up with you, allowing you to lean against her side as your eyes skimmed back and forth through the surrounding trees. She lowered her head to rest on her paws, letting out a puff through her nostrils as she began to drift off. but about an hour into your watch, she sat bolt up right, knocking you forward. You jumped, unsure why she would make such a sudden mood until she bared her teeth, her gaze focused on an area right in front of you. “What is it? Someone close by?” You ask, grabbing your small blade. True, she was known to overreact to a squirrel. But you never took a warning like this lightly. getting to your feet, you followed her gaze and started to venture further into the wood with her at your heels. you knew if something happened, she would howl and wake the others in a heartbeat. After a moment of quiet, you heard heavy panting coming from somewhere to your right. Lunar bared her teeth, a deep growl coming from her throat but you hushed her with a wave of your hand. That wasn’t the sound of an attacker. That sounded like someone was being hurt. “It went this way!” A voice suddenly yelled from your left and you saw light coming your way. Pushing Lunar back, you considered running back to the others, but then you heard a horrible cackling. A laugh that sent chills through your body. The type you had heard directed at your family, at you. “Fuckin’ orcs.” A second voice followed and they were dangerously close. Orc? The word made you freeze. The only interaction you had had with orcs was not a fond memory. But something about this felt… wrong. You could see there was a small clearing through the trees and then something moved. It was large, and hunched over on its hands and knees. Easily an orc. But it was shaking and grunting with pain. You were about to run out to it when the lights of fire torches came running through from left. A group of Goblins, tall and thin bounced through the trees and ran for the orc. The first to get to him landed a kick to its abdomen, dropping the poor thing to the ground. no less than 6 Goblins crowded round the orc, taunting it and attacking the creature. “Maybe we should just yank his tusks out.” One cackled. “or skin it!” Another suggested. “Not that its got much.” you felt sick to your stomach. You couldn’t stand here and let them tear into this orc. Lunar whined from your side as she padded from foot to foot. You knew she must have been beaten as a pup, due to a number of scars across her skin. So you didn’t expect her to follow you into a losing battle. “Go back, get the others.” You tell her, rubbing behind her ears before darting out from behind the tree. “HEY!” You cried out, your voice echoing through the clearing. The groups heads snapped in your direction with fear. But that fear quickly disappeared. You didn’t blame them. Six big, fully grown Goblins had taken down a large orc. One tiny human wasn’t exactly going to be a problem. “Run along home, little girl.” One sneered, his voice mocking you. From between your feet, you saw the orc raise its head in your direction and the sight shocked you. You could tell it was male by the tusks, which were a lot bigger in male orcs than females. But its face was bloodied and battered. One eye shone a deep blue with the other was white, perhaps even blind. “Get away from him.” You snapped, using your hand to motion for them to move. “Im warning you.” “Little humans warning us. We’d better be scared.” A Goblin mimicked a frighten voice but moved out towards you. “Humans are sweeter anyway.” The groups attention was turned to you and they moved away from orc, who was struggling to get up on all fours again. You could hear his gasps for air. But as the whole group started to advance on you, you found yourself moving back. You hoped Lunar had got back to the others, that she was bringing them here. And soon. “Leave. Her!” The orc cried out, his voice deep and filled with an authority you had never heard before. It shook your whole body and you saw he had managed to get to his feet. His shoulders were hunched, his body covered in blood, his legs shaking. His fists were clenched as he snarled at the group of goblins. You couldn’t believe it. He had a chance to get away, to get a head start while they were distracted. You didn’t know if he brave or just stupid. “Takin’ a liking to the little human, filth?” A goblin turned back to the orc. “You can watch her die first.” Wrong chose of words. A howl filled the air, so loud you could have sworn it was a banshee. You looked behind you and saw Lunar come running out the trees. She slowed to a walk as she came close to you, her teeth bared and a low growl coming out her snout as she stared at the goblins. You placed your hand on her side, feeling her heart was racing. Hopefully this meant she had run back to the others and they were hot on her heels. You saw the orcs legs shaking violently before he fell back to his knees, panting. “I’ll give you another warning.” You look back to the group of Goblins, who had backed down considerably. Lunar was about 6 foot tall at the top of her head and she was rather intimidating to look at, especially when she was growling like this. “But my friends aren’t so forgiving.” You started to walk to the group, Lunar right beside you. The goblins all moved to the right, shuffling as they dare not to take their eyes off Lunar. You walked up to the orc as Lunar put herself between you both and the goblins. “can you stand?” you asked, kneeling in front of him. He had put both his hands on the ground to steady himself with his eyes closed. He had shoulder length dreadlocks which had fallen in front of his face, acting like a curtain between you both. “No.” he growled lowly so they couldn’t hear him. “Okay, I have some friends coming. We’ll help you.” You say in a soft and soothing voice as you reach and move his dreadlocks to the side. The gentle gesture made his head snap up to you and he met your eyes. He froze as he started at you, looking like he had just seen a ghost or an angel. you withdrew your hand to grab the bottom of your top. You used both your hands to tear a small bit off so you could try stop the bleeding from a cut on his head. His eyes never left your face as he stared at you in awe. You raised the cloth to his forehead, wiping the blood away gently. “the. Goblins.” He grunted, his eyes darting to the group that Lunar was keeping a bay, but they hadn’t dispersed. They were whispering among themselves. “Lunar will keep them there until the others come.” You comfort him. You could see his face was torn and had seen scars long before this group of goblins. His lip was spilt in the corner, his cheek had a couple of nasty gashes in them and a scar ran from the middle of his nose up to his eyebrow, crossing his white eye. “we can take down the damn warg!” You heard one of the goblins growl and your head snapped to them. You saw them starting to advance on Lunar, who kept her ground and growled, snapping her jaws at them. Week 9 Writing Assignment

Working Notes:

             This week I started working on my final project in actuality, instead of just planning it in my head. It will take the form of a facebook page about climate change, and the posts will appear to be from the community that follows it, even though I’ll be writing all of them. I’ll begin by editing writing responses from class that are applicable to my theme, and posting those. I am also planning on writing a longer prose that is very research heavy. I first adapted my 8th week writing response (where we had to track food intake), and tried to make it focus more on global warming. I am still mid-progress in changing this response. I am struggling because I received polarizing feedback—people who liked the shortness and abruptness because it added to the mood, and others who wanted it longer, or who wanted more research and URLs added. I think I will make it a little longer before adding it to the facebook page. I am also currently working on finding striking graphics, which I will try to alternate with more writing-heavy posts. Hopefully these graphics will also serve to make it look like a real facebook page. I have graphics that show global temperatures, global CO2 levels, and the effects of greenhouse gases. Lastly, I am also adapting my response from week 6 (walk, observe, write, research, correct). I am attempting to add graphics and even more research to the final product, but I am not yet satisfied with the result.

Unfortunately, due to the ease of harvest, high levels of saturated fat, and even higher demand, capitalism will not allow this market to die off anytime soon. After going through the week, I realized how essential palm oil is to modern products and cooking. I realized that this will not be an easy material to transition out of my life, so I looked up alternatives. According to activist groups, it is not necessary to stop using palm oil, it is necessary only to begin producing it in a sustainable way. This includes reseeding areas that have had their soil drained of nutrients, and using the wood from the forest that is cleared in productive ways, instead of burning it or allowing it to decompose. This may have a large overhead cost (harvesting wood is more expensive than burning it or clearing it in less expensive ways), but eventually selling the wood will make up for this cost. In my opinion, this wood resale and sustainability focus must be mandated by law, or it will never happen (information from The Telegraph and National Geographic).

Week 6 Adaptation: Global Warming and apathy

1.     I’m not done editing this piece, but I think that I will eventually break it into 2 different pieces:

a.     Standalone “apathy” prose

b.     Mix of pictures of students (with stickers over their faces) enjoying the february warmth and EPA research—try to mix daily life/enjoyment with fear.

2.     Thoughts on Global warming from walk on the midway and around the quad:

a.     Yesterday, the average temperature was below freezing, and I had to wear my gloves while I was eating my apple so my fingers didn’t hurt from the cold.

b.     Today, the high is 55, the low is 43, and I don’t need my gloves.

c.     Everyone seems happy about how warm it is, even though it should be terrifying.

d.     I walked out of Kent and two girls were walking in front of me in light jackets. “It feels like spring!” one of them said to the other. “I know right!”

e.     Chance of rain around 18:00

f.      I’m wearing a light jacket, but it’s unzipped. I’m considering taking it off.

g.     Looking around, the ground (that should be frozen!!!) is fairly green. If I couldn’t see the lack of foliage on the trees, I could think that it was spring or summer.

h.     Warmth and light lifts everyone’s spirits, psychologists know this. There’s even a condition called SAD, where people are more likely to becomes depressed in the winter.

                                               i.     So shouldn’t the warmth make me happy?

                                             ii.     It does.

                                            iii.     But that scares me more.

                                            iv.     If people are made happier by the warmth, they are going to be even more apathetic about trying to fix it.

                                              v.     It’s hard to crusade “BRING BACK THE COLD” because very few will gather behind that rallying cry

3.     Important points from research from EPA website:

a.     Many extreme temperature conditions are becoming more common.

b.     Record-setting daily high temperatures have become more common than record lows.

c.     This graph shows the dramatic increase in temperature of the earth’s surface and the lower troposphere.

d.     Worldwide, 2015 was the warmest year on record and 2006–2015 was the warmest decade on record since thermometer-based observations began.

e.     The North, the West, and Alaska have seen temperatures increase the most, while some parts of the Southeast have experienced little change.

                                               i.     It is easier for some regions to deny than others

f.      Nationwide, unusually hot summer days (highs) have become more common over the last few decades (see Figure 2). The occurrence of unusually hot summer nights (lows) has increased at an even faster rate.

g.     If the climate were completely stable, one might expect to see highs and lows each accounting for about 50 percent of the records set. 

h.     the Endangered Species Act (ESA) helps ensure that actions taken or permitted by the federal government will not jeopardize the continued existence of a listed species or result in adverse modification of designated critical habitat.

i.      Americans generated 33 million tons of plastics in 2014, about 13 percent of the waste stream. Only 9.5 percent of plastics were recycled in 2013.

j.      It can take from 450 to 1000 years for plastic to completely decompose.

4.     Apathy

I don’t see any coats. Almost everyone is wearing long sleeve t-shirts or light jackets. Some people are even wearing short sleeves. It’s an interesting phenomenon—a form of control. We don’t mind it, because we don’t notice it. We also don’t mind it because who doesn’t love the warmth? But the weather controls more than we think—like those bitterly cold days in the past couple weeks. Global warming causes both high and low extremes in temperature.

When it lets us show off our arms, pale and white after the long winter, we’re happy.

We don’t see the species that are endangered and extinct at the north and south poles as the ice melts.

We don’t see the rainforests, horribly deforested.

We do see the extra sunlight, and we’re happy.

 Global warming was a battle we were unwilling to fight before, but after recent political changes it seems more likely than ever that this problem will be purposefully and completely ignored. The Trump administration removed mentions of climate change from the official United States of America energy website.

 According to Emile Durkheim, a noted sociologist: “Some will object that science is often the antagonist of opinion, the errors of which it combats and corrects. But science can succeed in this task only if it has sufficient authority, and it can gain such authority only from opinion itself…” When the people with authority deny scientific truths, the entire foundation of our modern society is eroded. This forces me to ask: At what point will climate change become undeniable? What will these deniers say then?

But the real question is, what will motivate people?

The warmth scares me, but everyone enjoys it.

The pictures of the animals we’ll never see again on our facebook timeline perhaps evoke a second of sorrow and guilt.

“I recycle!” “I do my part!”

…

 “It doesn’t matter what I do, it doesn’t make a difference”

...

 We do see the extra sunlight, and we’re happy.

The top diagram explains the effect of greenhouse gases, I will add a research-based analysis (perhaps in recipe form???) to this with details about specific greenhouse gases and their sources. Im thinking of including the bottom graphic with a short poem (think Styrofoam) in relation to climate change deniers:
