I hope these aren't strange questions, but how'd you learn to crochet? I've never knit anything other than the basic shawl/scarf/square but I've been kinda flipflopping between wanting to crochet squares for a blanket & wanting to knit them, esp bcs I got a lot of hooks that have been sitting in my craft bag for a while. And do you have a favorite yarn to use? I like soft stuff but it can be hard to find a good roll of soft yarn that doesn't start unraveling as I go through it.
hi somniel !! your questions arent weird at all dont worry ^_^
i have a very lame answer... i taught myself by reading a tutorial book & trial and error. iirc my stitch progression went from slip stitch > sc > dc > tr & so on (i didnt like/ get the hang of hdc until later, i would always do yarn under instead of yarn over lol). the book had lots of diagrams which helped a lot ! for more advanced stitches like tunisian honeycomb (its so gorgeous) i looked at video tutorials instead. as a sidenote - i've been trying to teach myself how to knit but i still haven't figured out how to cast on! :']
as for crochet squares... are you planning on doing them in traditional back-and-forth crochet or more like granny squares? idk how experienced you are but granny squares are a nice introduction to crocheting in the round (for stuff like plushies and doilies too)
i do not like bernat blanket yarn* it sucks ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿป if you pull too hard/ your tension is too high it can snap (...lots of yarns are capable of this but its such an issue with this specific yarn. To me personally) umm... i started making squares for a blanket that i might finish someday...! in lion brand mandala baby. idk if it's any softer than other acrylic yarns but i just really liked the colorways it had & it comes in a cake rather than a skein if that sways you one way or the other :] oh! and it works with regular-size hooks (like g maybe? - k or so, depends on your tension and how much drape you want) since its a little thinner than a standard worsted weight yarn
*ok upon a closer look my gripe is with the extra/ extra thick kind. it also needs like a comically large hook to work with
