Donnie Darko stands the test of time because there is no deeper meaning. Any message the film is trying to communicate can be read as the exact opposite. Does Donne escape fate in the end by terminating the timeline that leads to the fated deaths? Or does he succumb to fate, and we’re all the mishaps along the way the natural consequences of fleeing fate? The plane only ever flies in the original, terminated timeline, it can’t exist if that world didn’t exist naturally. But it’s only because of the plane that the next world exists
